This is the table read of Sam In Retrograde written by Sam jarvis (Dollface. Tosh.o). SAM IN RETROGRADE is a weird little comedy about one woman's journey through grief, and her attempt to find herself in the process. More specifically, it's about a girl who starts carrying her dead husband's urn around everywhere and talking to it as if they're still married. Which yes, does affect her relationships with everyone else in her life. As you'd imagine. The project was developed and optioned at CBS Studios with Party Over Here producing, and Bert & Bertie (HAWKEYE, THE GREAT, TROOP ZERO) attached to direct. It was taken out the summer of 2021 and pitched to Hulu, Apple, Paramount+, Showtime, Peacock, FX, Freeform, and HBOMax. While a few execs fought for it, they all ended up passing. And if I recall correctly, Amazon and Netflix passed before hearing a pitch. It was all very cool. The cast for this one is  nothing short than spectactular. It includes Katie O'Brien (Teachers), Katrina Davis (Figuring It Out), Julie Brister (Goliath), Suzy Nakamura (Avenue 5, Dead to Me, Dr. Ken), John Ross Bowie (Speechless, Big Bang Theory), Leonard Robinson (Insecure), Ashley Padilla (Son of Zorn) and Andrew Reich with stage directions. For more Dead Pilots Society episodes and information about our live shows, please subscribe to the podcast!Make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Instagram, and Twitter, and visit our website at deadpilotssociety.com

Episode 7 of our season on Troublemakers, and we're looking at the 1997 Rea Tajiri film, Strawberry Fields, which was part of the Class of 1997 "Asian American New Wave," featuring debut works of directors like Justin Lin, Quentin Lee, Eric Nakamura, Michael Aki, Chris Chan Lee, and Rea (the only woman of the group). Strawberry Fields features a firecracker performance by a young Suzy Nakamura, who folks might recognize more recently for her role as Dr. Ken's wife on the ABC sitcom. She plays Irene, a pyromaniac teenager haunted by ghosts of the past. Because the film takes place in the '70s, Brian talks about how he loves how Strawberry Fields subverts the 1970s counterculture road trip movie, by reminding us that the open landscapes of America that were home to these Hollywood renegades were also home to Japanese internment camps and other haunted histories. And then because it was shot in the '90s, Ada tries to convince Brian of the similarities between the Strawberry Fields characters and the characters in My So-Called Life. Shout out to all the hard-core My So-Called Life fans that also keep up with important Asian American cinema.

Ken Jeong is back on television. You may know Ken Jeong as the naked Asian guy from the Hangover but more so in his breakout role was as Senor Ben Chang in Dan Harmon's Community. In Community Ken Jeong played the wonderfully acerbic Spanish teacher with a harsh and in-your-face attitude towards his students. Ken Jeong's new show is loosely based on his real life in that Dr. Ken Jeong was in fact a doctor before becoming a full time comedic actor. Unlike his real-life Dr. Ken the character is an supposedly amazing doctor with a poor bed-side manner towards his patients.  Dr. Ken also has a bizarre attitude towards his children, wife and co-workers which make him very unlikeable and hard to watch.  Rounding out the cast are veterans like Tisha Campbell-Martin (Gina from Martin) as Damona, Jonathan Slavin (Phil Myman from Better of Ted) as Clark, and the incredibly talented Dave Foley (Dave Nelson from Newsradio, Kids In The Hall) as Pat.  Also part of the show are Kate Simses as Dr. Julie their clinic resident, Suzy Nakamura as Ken's wife Alison Park, and Krista Marie Yu and Albert Tsai as Ken's children Molly and Dave.    Central to the show is Dr. Ken's over-acting and somewhat narcissistic approach to dealing with everyone around him which makes it very difficult to watch. The pilot episode took a strong departure from the script removing some really X-rated jokes, only to replace them with more suitable R-rated jokes. More surprising was Dave Foley's character making openly racist "jokes" to Dr. Ken which wasn't in the script.  Reviews of the show from USA Today to Hollywood Reporter have not been great and as the season progresses the writers are attempting to make Dr. Ken more likable and even retooled Foley's character away from the overt racist sense of humor.     In this episode we try really hard to find some moments in the show that worked and that were funny, and we manage to find a few. Dr. Ken has the potential to make for a great show but the prognosis based on the pilot is a sitcom barely breathing and hardly worth saving.
