Dr. Chelsea Wakefield and co-host Lisa Stutzman Graves discuss topics in Chapter 5 of Dr. Wakefield's book, The Labyrinth of Love,.what happens in "the swamplands." This is the time we find ourselves moving deeper into the relationship. Our inner abandoned kids, vulnerable teenagers and array of other characters start to show up and we don't know what to do about it. Intimate relationships stir up a lot of memories from the past, memories that have been dormant for many years. Dr. Wakefield answers an email from a caller who wants to know about second marriages and how to get off to a good start. This returns us to the topic of expectations, assumptions and projections and how projections and how we can never do enough "pre-marital" counseling to cover everything we will encounter in a deepening relationship. What we can do is to commit to an ongoing process of doing our personal work and staying engaged and present to each other in the interpersonal realm. Sometimes projections can feel like intuitions - both positive and negative. Does intuition exist? If so, how do we know the difference between projection and intuition? If we holding our "intuitions" and invested conclusions about who this other person is and what they are about lightly, we can encounter them with loving curiosity and continue to learn about them. This will create a safe space for them to show up as they really are so that we can see them more clearly and love them more dearly.

He realized that peatlands provide great soil conditions as a medium for growth due to the accumulation of partially decayed vegetation in the wet, cold environment. From pollutification to peatlands (13.09)Edward explains that peatlands are formed by a kind of swamping. Swamps and marshes don't accumulate as much peat as quickly as fens and bogs do, which are the primary accumulators of peat.Wetlands are not wastelands (16.33)Edward shares some superstitions surrounding wetlands that arose due to the methane making them glow in the dark. The smell of Sulphur dioxide arising from the peat as well as the diseases from the bacteria in the water supply have evoked a revulsion in the public. An inexpensive, healthy ecosystem with carbon storage (28.01)The peatland ecosystem has 5 times more carbon storage capacity than an equivalent area in the Amazon rainforest. Peat releases polysaccharides which block bacterial growth, it filters runoff from the farms to prevent the growth of algae in lakes, helps in preventing forest fires, mitigates floods, and hosts many carnivorous plants. How to save the planet (37.01)Edward has been advocating and teaching about controlled burning to thin out the forest, as indigenous communities do, which reduces the intensity of fires and makes more moisture available. Restoring the peatland, restoring the habitat (51.60)Edward laments that limiting peatlands prevents the 3 to 5 billion birds that migrate from the south to nest. He cites studies and recalls stories discussing how different species of animals take refuge in peatlands. Protecting the protector of nature (1.06.59)With investment toward restoring peatlands, Edward says that we can “have much more success storing carbon, filtering water, buffering forests from wildfire and protecting endangered species”. Edward Struzik mainly studies the Arctic, but his new book, Swamplands, covers bogs, marshes, swamps, and fens -- squishy places that can be found all over the planet, though not much in temperate or tropical areas. These wetlands are stinky (from sulfur dioxide) and buggy, so people have often drained them in order to get farmland and more agreeable places to live. However, they produce peat – a substance that sequesters vastly more carbon than even tropical rainforests. Today peat is still being used as a fuel, but probably the cheapest and most effective way of keeping carbon in the soil is to preserve all existing peatlands. A hundred years ago a massive quake sundered the eastern shores of Valderian, leaving devastation in its wake and creating what is now referred to as The Shattered Lands. The port town of Edgewater to the north managed to turn the geographical blight into something of a tourist trap in later years, giving a minor boost to their stalling economy. And for a time things were considered good, although you might have gotten a different answer if you polled any random passersby along Edgewater’s main streets. In fact, if you managed to talk to everyone in the town you’d discover a shared emotion: dread. Wichita Lineman, the ultimate country/pop crossover track, is the subject of this week's Soul Music. David Crary is a lineman from Oklahoma. He describes his job - storm-chasing to mend fallen power-lines; travelling on 'dirt roads, gravel roads, paved roads... up in the farmlands of Illinois and Missouri... down south in the Swamplands... it ain't nothing to swerve in the middle of the road in your bucket-truck to miss an alligator '. He recalls the first time he heard Wichita Lineman, travelling in the back of his family's Station Wagon, listening to the radio... thinking that being a lineman 'must be a cool job' if someone's written a song about it. Also a part-time musician, David has recorded his own version of the song which sums up his working life... on the road, working long hours, away from his wife and six kids. Wichita Lineman was written by Jimmy Webb for the Country star Glen Campbell. It tells the story of a lonely lineman in the American midwest, travelling vast distances to mend power and telephone lines. Released in 1968 it's an enduring classic, crossing the boundary between pop and country. It's been covered many times, but it's Glen Campbell's version which remains the best loved and most played. Johnny Cash also recorded an extraordinary and very raw version. Peter Lewry, a lifelong Cash fan, describes how this recording came about, towards the end of Cash's career. Meggean Ward's father was a lineman in Rhode Island... her memories of seeing him in green work trousers, a plaid shirt and black boots, wrapping his cracked hands in bandages every morning before setting off to climb telephone poles are interwoven forever with Wichita Lineman... as a child she always felt the song was written for her father, who else? Glen Campbell also gave an interview for this programme. Shortly after the interview was recorded, Campbell went public about his diagnosis of Alzheimer's. His contribution to the programme is brief, and includes an acoustic performance of the song. It was a real privilege to record this, appropriately enough, down the line. Producer: Karen Gregor.
