Jake Wheeler is no stranger to the restaurant industry or Tex-Mex cuisine. Both have always been a part of his and his family's livelihoods. “Back in 1995, (my dad) launched Tijuana Flats. In 2015, he sold it. So now we're here and it's my turn to take the reins and do something new,” Jake Wheeler said. The family also owns Tibby's New Orleans Kitchen and Jake Wheeler had been working there as a manager, handling events and marketing. Jake Wheeler and his father, Brian Wheeler, opened Big Taco in Casselberry in early November. Jake Wheeler said his dad had been getting restless since retiring. “The way this went is my dad, he retired about four or five years ago,” Jake Wheeler said. “He got bored in retirement — like one day, I walked outside and he had our dog on the jetski in the backyard. So he gets bored. He always wants something new and he thought, ‘You know if I'm going to be spending my money and resources to do something, how about I help out my kids?' So he said, ‘I was good at Tex-Mex and I think we could do it again.' So then he came up with Big Taco and the whole idea of this was to provide an outlet for me and my brother to take the reins, run, do our thing and hopefully create another Tex-Mex empire.” Jake Wheeler said Big Taco had been a nickname for his dad since the elder Wheeler opened up Tijuana Flats. “He's been called Big Taco since 1995,” Jake Wheeler said. “His friends gave it to him. They would hang out, ‘Hey, Big Taco, what's up?'” Taking command of Big Taco has proved something of a challenge for Jake Wheeler. He had restaurant experience with running Tibby's, but Big Taco is a completely different setup. “I had no clue of how to run a fast-casual restaurant,” Jake Wheeler said. “Luckily had the training of the full service, which is a much bigger operation. I wouldn't say it's easier or more difficult than this, but once I came here to the fast-casual setting, it was kind of refreshing.” The decision to open in Casselberry was a strategic one. Jake Wheeler said the idea was to save money on rent while building up a reputation. “We thought Casselberry is a great place — you have a family environment, a good town, and we're not breaking the bank and we could really build a good community here. Our neighboring restaurants — Bagel King and Anthony's — they've been here for 20-plus years. They're all very respected. Welcome back lezzies! Slip into your magical unwashed jeans and get ready for a deep dive into a story of chosen family, sneaky sleepovers, compulsory heterosexuality and classic baby gay chaos.  This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with writer, comedian, and friend of the pod Colette McInytre (@yungbabayaga) to talk about why The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants books Should've Been Gay. The first of these books came out on September 11, 2001! That's right, when we talk about post 9/11 America, we're talking about an America that knows about the magic of scissoring your besties via shared pants.  There are many occasions where we really have to stretch for these SBG's, but The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is truly a gay treasure trove. For those who aren't in the know, the series follows a group of gals being pals through high school and into adulthood who stay connected to one another through a shared pair of jeans that magically fits all four of them in spite of them having different body types. There are some strict rules for these pants including the very concerning rule of “Never wash the pants” and the possibly gayest rule, “Boys cannot remove the pants. Only you or another sister can remove the pants”.  We follow the journey of the pants as they move between the four teenagers throughout their first summer apart. Each of the girls have a pretty queer storyline, but the one that jumps out the most is definitely Bridget's soccer camp experience. This girl is going through it. Between the loss of her mom, her massive daddy issues, and her overwhelming thirst for competition and the validation of winning, she is really at the perfect level of vulnerability for comphet to ruin her life. Bridget spends her entire summer trying to seduce her soccer coach and the second she actually gets with him she loses her freaking mind and slips into a horrific depression.  Then there is Lena's story, which may not be as obvious as a gay soccer player but is still pretty darn gay. She spends the summer with her grandparents in Greece frantically trying to avoid the boy they want to set her up with. She constantly hides her body under the absolute dykiest clothing she can find and bounces the second she gets a distress call from Bridget.  The other girls, Carmen and Tibby are gloriously queer too. Sacramento City Councilmember Sean Loloee continued his personal war against affordable housing last week in spectacular fashion, claiming repeatedly that a proposed 124-unit apartment building for low-income residents in his district would "destroy a community," and then arguing with Mayor Darrell Steinberg. This simple item on the consent calendar--which was nothing more than a nod to the nonprofit developer to apply for $5.7 million in grants so that city residents wouldn't have to foot the bill--should have taken no more than a couple of minutes to pass. But Loloee harnessed the NIMBY rage of Woodlake homeowners to drag the item on for nearly two hours. The item passed, but just barely. Councilmembers Angelique Ashby, Jeff Harris and Mai Vang voted against the money, showing that the future of affordable housing in Sacramento rests on a razor's edge. Dorcas Porter has just received the lifetime achievement award from the National Youth Advocate Program and has been the foster parent of the month many times. She has been a foster parent for over 40 years, fostering over 500 children during that time. In addition to that she is the community outreach specialist at the Youth Advocate Services Agency in Ohio. Her daughter Tibby Porter as well as their family's community has been a part of raising and teaching hundreds of children the power of love and how to reach excellence within themselves. We explore the lifelong journeys of both Dorcas and Tibby as well as the support that they grew up with, provided and continue to extend out to their foster children. Dorcas and Tibby both advocate unconditional love, being there, consistent structure, and listening as the keys to how they were able to help so many children. Chugging along through the Ben Raab run of Green Lantern on JUST ONE OF THE GUYS, we come to our first multi-part story, a little tale entitled, "The Blind". No, this isn't what happens to you when you stare at the character of Lianna for too long......but a cosmic cloud thingee that just likes to make stars go supernova and blow planets up and stuff. Yeah, not exactly an original idea, but the story of Kyle dealing with it with help from Tibby the Space Turtle and interference from Space FEMA is actually pretty entertaining and makes me wonder what all the fuss about Ben Raab's run on the book is. Chugging along through the Ben Raab run of Green Lantern on JUST ONE OF THE GUYS, we come to our first multi-part story, a little tale entitled, "The Blind". No, this isn't what happens to you when you stare at the character of Lianna for too long......but a cosmic cloud thingee that just likes to make stars go supernova and blow planets up and stuff.
