Hearing God in the Small Story As we continue our journey through The Big Story of God—a theme introduced last week by Bill Chapman—this Sunday, we zoomed in. Guest speaker Steve Ball, Elim's Regional Leader, led us into a powerful truth: while God is telling a grand story through Scripture, He also longs to speak into our small, personal stories—right here, right now. And how does He do that? Through His Word. "Blessed is the one… whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night." – Psalm 1:1-2 Steve reminded us that if we're looking for a more joyful, anchored, hope-filled life, it starts with this one practice: meditating on the Word of God. Not just reading it. Not just hearing it. But meditating on it—like slowly savouring a delicious meal, letting it linger, nourish, and shape us from the inside out. The Ancient Practice of Meditating on Scripture Steve taught us a method of biblical meditation that is thousands of years old—a way to truly engage with the Bible so that God's voice is no longer distant or abstract, but personal and transformative. Here's how: 1. Read it Don't rush. Read the passage slowly. Re-read it. Read it in different translations. Each time, allow God to highlight something fresh. 2. Speak it Say it out loud. Change your emphasis on different words. Speak it over your life, your situation, your family. There's power in declaring Scripture. 3. Write it Writing helps take things deeper. That might mean journaling, drawing, writing poetry, even writing a song. The goal? To respond creatively and personally to what God is saying. 4. Pray it Turn Scripture into a prayer. Invite God to speak through what you've just read. Prayer and writing often go hand-in-hand in this step. 5. Live it This is where transformation happens. As we meditate, the Word stays with us. It shapes how we think, speak, and live—day and night. God Is Ready to Speak – Are You Ready to Listen? Meditation is not something to endure—it's something to enjoy. The invitation this week is simple: slow down, open your Bible, and let God speak. Whether it's one verse or a whole chapter, He's ready to whisper words that will shape your life. “God has some beautiful things to say to you today—you just need to get started.” – Steve Ball

Your Nightly Prayer
I think this is a question we all ask ourselves, right? How do we know that we know that we know when it's God speaking? What if it's not?In this episode, I walk through four “tests” per se, that might help you discern whether what you're hearing is actually the voice of God.Hint: It doesn't sound like Morgan Freeman and it's usually not a burning bush. Disappointing, I know. But truly, we tend to over spiritualize what it sounds like or assume that it's only on special occasions or big decisions but in reality, the Heavenly Father is always speaking!Through His people,Through His Word,Through prayer,Through dreams,Through all kinds of places and particulars, His voice is reminding you that you're seen, significant, and safe. The kicker? His voice usually calls us to get uncomfortable, release some things that we want to hold onto, or calling us to step up in ways we feel ill-equipped.John 10:27 says, “My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me."You are His sheep. He is your Shepherd. You have the Holy Spirit. You hear His voice right where you are..I hope as you make space for quiet and lean in, this podcast will help remind you that you already hold the superpower of having direct access to the King of Kings. It's absolutely extraordinary, and it's true.

When we are feeling empty or spiritually depressed, or when circumstances make us aware of our weakness, that is a great opportunity to grow in God by turning to Him and asking Him to fill our void. We must be thirsty for God before we drink of His living water (Isa 55:1, John 7:37, Rev 21:6, 22:17). When our soul is full of worldly things we have no room for God, but “blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness (God's Word and Spirit) Presence, for they shall be filled (with God's Presence)” (Matt 5:6). In Psalm 42 the psalmist is depressed and thirsty for the living God (v1-2), so He turns to God to fill him. Inspired by the local scenery, where the river Jordan flows out from Mount Hermon at Banias and tumbles down in waterfalls, he focuses on God, seeing these waters as a picture of God's river of life (v6), and then cries out from the depth of his heart (need) to the depths of God to fill him: “Deep calls unto deep at the noise (sound) of Your waterfalls (of grace)” (v7a). Through His Word, we hear the sound of His river of life flowing to us, and respond by calling out to Him to fill us. As a result: “all Your waves and billows (of love, peace and joy) have gone over me. The Lord will command His lovingkindness in the daytime” (v7b-8). The Oil Miracle (2Kings 1-7), when God filled all the empty vessels that were presented to Him with His Oil (representing the Holy Spirit) reveals that He is willing to fill all the empty parts of our soul with His Spirit, if we turn to Him, present them to Him, and ask Him to fill us. The Oil only stopped flowing when there were no longer any empty vessels to fill. So our empty voids (our awareness of our weakness and need) are a great opportunity to turn to god and be filled.

I was unable to focus on a work project because of anxiety; I was afraid that my plans for it wouldn’t succeed. My anxiety came from pride. I believed my timeline and plans were best, so I wanted them to proceed unhindered. A question broke through my thoughts, however: Are your plans God’s plans? The problem wasn’t my planning─God calls us to be wise stewards of our time, opportunities, and resources. The problem was my arrogance. I was fixated on my understanding of events and how I wanted them to turn out, not on God’s purpose and how He wanted my plans to turn out. James encourages us to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that” (4:15). We’re to plan not with a presumptuous mindset, thinking we know everything and have control over our life, but from a position of submission to God’s sovereignty and wisdom. After all, we “do not even know what will happen tomorrow.” In our humanness, we’re helpless and weak, like “a mist that appears … and then vanishes” (v. 14). Only God has authority and power over everything in our lives; we don’t. Through His Word and the people, resources, and circumstances He allows each day, He guides us to live in submission to His will and ways. Our plans aren’t to come from following ourselves but from following Him.

The things we're going through right now—the struggles, the setbacks, the suffering—aren't random. Daniel 12 pulls back the curtain on the future, revealing that trials are not just obstacles; they are opportunities. Opportunities to be purified. To be cleansed. To be refined. And in the end? Glory. Resurrection. Eternal life. But here's the question: will we face these trials with the wisdom God gives, or will we stumble through them blindly? The God who calls us to endure is the same God who equips us. Through His Word. Through His people. Through His Spirit. The world is unraveling, but God is still working. The question is—are we listening? Will we be found faithful? Will we finish well?
Acts 11 - Speaker: Josh MacAvoy - As the early church grew in number and spread to new cities, there was an opportunity for great rejoicing but also great criticism. People who used to never interact, had generational hatred and deep suspicion towards each other are joining the same faith. Now they are being called to worship and work together. And this fertile soil for gospel growth is also a space for potential criticism, isolation and suspicion. But if criticism and factions are allowed to grow in the fledgling church, it will have a disastrous effect. Disunity amongst believers will get in the way of God's great rescue plan and His mission to make one new people of faith. So, what is needed? Gospel Unity. And in Acts 11, we find the early church being called to that very thing. Through His Word and by His Spirit, God is calling His people to hold tightly to the Gospel and not anything else. Read Acts 11 in preparation for our time together tomorrow.

Through His Word and His Spirit, God builds His great army by reviving people who are dead in sin.
Because Christians have put on the new self, created in the likeness of God in Holy Baptism, St. Paul calls us to imitate God in forgiveness and love. In His love, Jesus has given Himself as a sacrifice in our place. Therefore, we flee from idolatry and everything related to it, for this would be to renounce the inheritance that God has given. Because God has called us out of that darkness, we live in His light, seeing the truth through His Word. Through His Word, He makes all things visible. St. Paul reminds the Ephesians of that reality through a hymn: “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” Rev. Matt Ulmer, pastor at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church—Friedheim, just outside Decatur, IN, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Ephesians 5:1-14. "One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the epistle to the Ephesians. St. Paul highlights the salvation that God has given to His whole Church by His grace through faith. Because God has given His people this new life in Holy Baptism, we live in thanksgiving to Him as members of one body.
In this episode I share how God's Word sets you free and without faith in His word you will not be truly free. ". . . Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, 'If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free'" (John 8:31-32, NKJV). Through His Word you learn of your right standing with God and this sets you free. For example, in Luke 13, beginning at verse 10, Jesus is teaching in the synagogue on the Sabbath and there is a woman who was all bent over and couldn't rise up. She had been this way for 18 years! Jesus heals her and the ruler of the synagogue condemns Him for healing on the Sabbath. "The Lord then answered him and said, 'Hypocrite! Does not each one of you on the Sabbath loose his ox or donkey from the stall, and lead it away to water it? So ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound—think of it—for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath?'" (Luke 13:15-16, NKJV). Jesus pointed out that she had a right to be healed because of her "being a daughter of Abraham." We have the same right! "For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ . . . And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise" (Galatians 3:27, 29, NKJV). We, as believers in Christ receive all the Spiritual blessings and rights accredited to the offspring of Abraham. And a profound revelation of Christ can make this a reality for us. Like this woman, you have a right as a Christian to be healed! In Genesis we're told about how Satan deceived man and brought fear and sin into the world. Jesus came to defeat the works of Satan, and to bring us out of his dominion. We have the Truth and Love of God found in His Word to overcome fear and sin in our lives. In this message I give examples of how knowing who you are in Christ will manifest this freedom. Selah! Let me hear from you - Charles www.aboundinglove.org Subscribe and share with someone you love.
What would it be like to journey through the wilderness in total darkness? Maybe you'd get scared, maybe you'd get lost, trip, or fall into danger. Sometimes walking through life feels like you're embarking on a dark journey without a map. But God's Word is the light of truth. It shines in the dark. Let its timeless wisdom direct your choices. God hasn't left us alone, without a map. You can let Him lead you with His word—that's the Bible! In Psalm 119, King David said... Your commandments give me understanding; no wonder I hate every false path. Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path. Through His Word, God guides us on paths of grace. It is such a comfort to know that even when the road of life gets rocky, you can trust His Word—today—to lead you in the right direction. radio.hopewithgod.com
Last commentary in the book of 2 Samuel based on David counting the army and God's wrath and anger on full display. It's important that we don't give in to Satan or the worlds influences when it comes to our choices. We have to always keep The LORD first and please Him. Through His Word and obedience by faith. We have to trust in Him and know that we can't do things on our own strength! Only by His Strength we get things done Amen! October 29, 2023 Daily Devotion: "Through His Word" Matthew 13:10-13 New International Version 10 The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?” 11 He replied, “Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. 12 Whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. 13 This is why I speak to them in parables: “Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand. Jesus still speaks to us today—in the words of Scripture and through the Holy Spirit and the body of Christ. And though the “secret” is out, we may feel that we lack understanding. In different seasons of life, we may experience clarity on spiritual questions we struggled with in the past. Or things that once appeared simple suddenly seem mysteriously complex. Part of our growth is in learning to accept God's timing, even when it comes to understanding Scripture. Whatever season we find ourselves in—whether a time of clarity or confusion— humility in approaching the Lord is essential. We can trust that He will reveal all we need to know. No hand-wringing required. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/gerzon-etino/message
While our Heavenly Father may not prevent us from sinning or spare us from the consequences of our sin, He does intervene and rescue us, just as He did Jacob. Through His Word, He graciously calls us to repentance and reminds us of His promises.
We are no better than the tax collectors and prostitutes. We who can make absolutely no claims before God, who can make no demand that God owes us anything! That is our place. That is what we confess when we confess our sins in the Divine Service. But in such repentance and faith, relying completely and solely on Christ, the perfect Son, and His merits, we have been promised the forgiveness and life of the perfect Son. Through His Word of Absolution, through His body and blood given to us here, He lifts us up from the depth and muck and mire of our sin and rebellion and gives us life and salvation and all that He is and all that He has. In repentance, we lose nothing, but gain everything. And we, who like the tax collectors and prostitutes, have nothing on our own, have everything in Him! God is Healer of our entire being – spirit, soul, and body. He is Jehovah Rapha. God has established a covenant of healing with us. God has provided healing and wholeness for us through the redemptive work of Christ on the Cross. How do we receive the healing that God has made available to us? There are many ways through which God administers His healing power. There are many ways we can receive divine healing: 1. Through His Word and personal faith – released through prayer, praise, declaration, and action. 2. Through the quickening of His indwelling Spirit. 3. Through the power of His life in you. 4. Through receiving the prayer of faith in Jesus' name. 5. Through the prayer of agreement in faith. 6. Through the healing anointing (laying on of hands, prayer cloths, touch). 7. Through a word of command spoken over you in faith. 8. Through partaking in the Lord's Table in faith. 9. Through the ministry of deliverance. 10. Through the manifestation of the gifts of the Spirit, (word of knowledge, gifts of healings, and working of miracles). 11. Through the manifestation of His healing presence. 12. Through the sovereign work of His glory. 13. Through releasing forgiveness to others. 14. Through receiving emotional healing and inner wholeness. 15. Through renouncing and breaking of generational curses. While it is good to understand the different ways in which God heals so we can position ourselves to receive healing, our faith is in God, not in the method. In this sermon we address these three ways to receive divine healing in Jesus' name: Through releasing forgiveness to others. Through receiving emotional healing and inner wholeness. Through renouncing and breaking of generational curses. Watch our online Sunday Church service live stream every Sunday at 10:30am (Indian Time, GMT+5:30). Rev. Nate Hill, pastor at St. Michael's Lutheran Church in Winchester, TX, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Psalm 1. Psalm 1 sets the tone for the entire Psalter. God teaches us that the blessed man does not join in the wickedness of scoffers; instead, the blessed man delights in the Word of God at every opportunity. Through His Word, God causes the lives of His people to flourish, which remains true even in the midst of earthly suffering. The wicked, despite any earthly successes, do not last; their way is not known by God. However, the LORD does know the way of His people, and He leads them in His steadfast love in Christ. Join Sharper Iron during the month of July to study selected Psalms. In the Psalter, God speaks His Word to us and teaches us how to speak back to Him in prayer. Even in the great variety of the Psalms, each one points us to our Savior, Jesus Christ.

I was born into a family of Chinese-Singaporeans who immigrated to the United States. Throughout my life, I was exposed to different cultures and customs. My parents wanted me to know my heritage, while at school I was taught values that were more American. For example, in Chinese culture, it's considered rude to open a gift in front of the giver, while in American culture, this is done quite often. Sometimes, I wasn't sure how to act or how to perceive things. I didn't know what my ultimate identity was. Should I follow the Eastern or Western way of doing things?.When I came to know Jesus, I learned that He accepts anybody as His child no matter what background they are from. There are Christians around the world speaking different languages, yet in the end, they are all children of God. So, while I can step into both familiar and unfamiliar cultures, I identify first and foremost as a Christian. I don't have to decide between human-made cultures and borders because I know that, in the end, I am a child of God..Paul writes in Galatians 3:28, “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Therefore, I realized that the ethics that matter most are the ones our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ taught. Jesus's teachings are how I live my life today. If you are struggling with your identity right now, know that Jesus sees you, and He wants to help you. You can trust in the Lord Jesus and know that your identity will forever be with Him. • Isaac Ong.• As Christians, our identity is secure in Jesus. What can today's Bible passages tell us about who we are in Him? Why could it be helpful to take time to remember what God says about us? .• Think about the customs you were taught by your school, guardians, and others. While it can be difficult to navigate different customs, as Christians, we get to follow Jesus first and foremost. God created diversity, so we can appreciate and enjoy our beautiful differences. Through His Word, His Spirit, and His people, He helps us discern how to interact with those around us. In differing cultural situations, such as the way we exchange gifts, neither option is sinful. And Jesus's ministry models how we should serve the people around us, being considerate of others' needs, traditions, and cultural contexts (1 Corinthians 9:19-23). Who are trusted Christians in your life who can help you discern how to follow Jesus in your own particular context?.So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith. Galatians 3:26 (NIV)

God is Healer of our entire being – spirit, soul, and body. He is Jehovah Rapha. God has established a covenant of healing with us. God has provided healing and wholeness for us through the redemptive work of Christ on the Cross. How do we receive the healing that God has made available to us? There are many different ways through which God administers His healing power. 10. Through the manifestation of the gifts of the Spirit. 11. Through the manifestation of His healing presence. 12. Through the sovereign work of His glory. In this parable from Matthew 13, Jesus is telling us that the byproduct of a life wholly surrendered to Him is to bear fruit and multiply the Kingdom. Through His Word, Jesus is sowing seed in our lives, and maybe you haven't seen fruit because you've been living with a hardened heart toward God and your relationship with Him has grown cold, or you love Jesus but when hard times come you get easily uprooted, or maybe your fear of man has caused you to be choked out...If this is you, ask God today to till up the land again, and remove the rocks and thorns from your life so that you may begin to bear fruit.
Matthew 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. This past week my mom had two cardiac arrests. My dad was quick to call the paramedics and begin CPR until they came. When they arrived, they administered the defibrillator six times before getting a pulse again. These were terrifying moments! While the doctors did their best to discover the cause of the cardiac arrest and the “death rhythm”, they could not. One of the doctors did say in a consultation that a virus could cause the heart to have rhythm issues. A virus is an infective agent that can do a lot of damage to one's heart. We certainly see that the purity of our physical heart matters! As Jesus introduced His sermon on the mount, on the North West coast of the Sea of Galilee, He describes the attitudes and attributes that He desires for those of His Kingdom to develop. In a brief, concentrated statement, Jesus urged His disciples to develop the attribute of purity in their hearts. Through His Word, we will see that the purity of our spiritual heart matters to Jesus.

Sermon for Sexagesima. The Scripture readings are Isaiah 55:10-13; Hebrews 4:9-13; and Luke 8:4-15.Through His Word, God gives you an honest and good heart. Yes, you are attacked by the devil, threatened by temptation, and seduced by the cares of this world. But by God's grace, He will sustain you and continue to work on you through that same Word.
God is a God who loves to talk. Through His Word the worlds were created, through His Word He speaks to us today. Through His Word He gives answers to the difficult situations of life. When a Christian says God is silent to him. It's usually because he has closed his ear to God's words. God is ever speaking through His Word. He loves to get chatty if only we would love to open His word and listen to him speak.
As we reflect on the year, we can see how God has provided for us in countless ways. From the food on our tables, to the roof over our heads, to the people in our lives, God has been faithful to provide for our needs. We may not always understand why things happen the way they do, but we can trust that God is in control and working everything out for our good (Romans 8:28).In addition to providing for our physical needs, God also blesses us with spiritual abundance. Through His Word and the work of the Holy Spirit, we can experience a rich and fulfilling relationship with Him. As we seek Him and draw near to Him, He fills us with His presence and peace. As we enter into a new year, let us give thanks to God for His faithfulness and provision. Let us also trust in His plans and seek Him with all our hearts, knowing that He will continue to bless us with abundance in all areas of our lives.

For all of the nuance that a conversation about hearing God's voice requires, at the end of the day hearing God boils down to four words: Listen and follow Jesus. Genesis 4:1-15; 2 Timothy 4:1-18; Luke 18:9-17 “How can you be so sure?” That is the question we may find ourselves asking when we read the confidence expressed by Paul in today's Epistle: “There is laid up for me the crown of righteousness” (2 Timothy 4:8); “The Lord stood by me and strengthened me. . . . I was rescued from the lion's mouth. . . . The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into His heavenly kingdom” (2 Timothy 4:17–18a). “Paul, how can you be so sure?” Today's service will help us to see that Paul's certainty was not based upon his strength of faith or his works of ministry; no, it was based solely on God's faithfulness to him in Jesus Christ, the Crucified! Through His Word and Spirit, God provides such confidence and certainty to us also as we gather in His presence and are received by Him as members of His heavenly kingdom. “To Him be the glory forever and ever. Amen” (2 Timothy 4:18b).

How's your tongue? Our words have the ability to be life-giving or the ability to bring destruction. In this message on James 3, Vlad shows us that: "In Christ, my speech can give life. Without Christ, my speech will destroy life." James 3:1-12 1. My speech has the ability to determine a direction (vv.1-4) 2. My speech has the ability to deliver destruction. (vv.5-10) 3. My speech has the ability to diagnose my heart (vv.11-12) Biblical Encouragements: • Through His power, God alone can redeem my speech • Through His Word, God speaks life to me • Through His Spirit, the church speaks life to the world God has a design for how we should use our words. We are prone to respond quickly and rashly. Here are a few biblical cautions against that: • Prov 18:6-7 - A fool's lips walk into a fight, and his mouth invites a beating. A fool's mouth is his ruin, and his lips are a snare to his soul. • Prov 18:21 - Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits. • Prov 12:18 - There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. Words have power! • Gen 1:1 - And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light • Gen 1:6 - And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” • Gen 1:9 - And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. • Gen 12:1-2 - Now the LORD said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great so that you will be a blessing. • Exodus 3:14 - God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I AM has sent me to you.'
Scripture of the Day: Acts 20:36“When Paul had finished speaking, he knelt down with all of them and prayed.”The Power of Praise pt 1When you praise God, especially when you sing praises to Him, things will begin to change. They may be dramatic changes that make you say, “WOW!” But, more often than not, it is the little things that begin to change. Small things that most people are not even aware of - unless you are looking at them spiritually instead of in the natural. If you are truly in tune with God (and the only way you can be in tune with God is THROUGH His Word and spending time in prayer), YOU will begin to pick up on the little, subtle changes that are beginning to change. But, what about those situations when there is an immediate need for God's Presence to be on the scene? An immediate need where, if God does not do something NOW – there may not be a tomorrow? Let me give you an example of how Praising God change bring swift changes to your situation, whatever that may be… In 2 Chronicles chapter 20, King Jehoshaphat and Judah went out to fight their enemy, the combined armies of the Ammonites, Moabites and the people of Mount Seir. These combined forces had banded together to destroy Judah. In the natural, Judah had no chance against these combined enemy forces. Things were looking pretty grim in the natural. It's amazing to me that almost everyone, when their back is against the wall and they have exhausted all of their ideas on how to fix any particular problem, only THEN do they turn to God and ask for His help. If we would just reverse this process, things would always go so much easier… Well, in this situation, what did the king of Judah do? He called for a prayer meeting. Praise God! At least he still had enough sense to do that! Instead of “run for the hills, every man for himself,” he said, “Let's run to God and ask for His help in this situation.” Praise God, Amen! Well, the Holy Spirit moved on a young man who then stood up and began to prophesize. To save time, I will not read all of the verses here. To summarize what was prophesized, was, that the Lord told the people they have nothing to fear. (That was a shock to some of them standing there, I'm sure…). They were told, “To go out to the battle, but it is not your battle, it is the Lord's battle.” The next morning, they all woke up and started to put themselves in battle formation to go out and fight the enemy. But instead of putting their best soldiers (in the natural at least), they put the choir out front. How do you think those choir members felt? “What? You want us to go out in front? With no weapons? No training? You just want us to walk about there and start singing?” I'm sure those thoughts were running through their minds… But let's look at what happened… They sang and praised God as they were going forth. The ministered to the Lord and sang praises to Him right in the faces of the enemy! This is just like Paul and Silas singing in prison, amen! But look at what happened… As the choir was singing “Praise the Lord, for His Mercy endures forever…” (and notice, there are no other verses indicated here. To me, that says they sang that one verse over and over and over. That tells us they were FOCUSED on what they needed and WHO they were Praising and WHO they were expecting to help them. Amen)! So, what happened as a result of PRAISE? The enemy armies began to fight amongst themselves! They started to attack each other! As Judah's army crested the hill and prepared to engage in battle, all they could see, as far as they could see – were dead bodies! The enemies had fought each other! Praise God (excuse the pun)! Amen! Judah then went in on a mop up operation and just gathered all the spoils that were left behind! Amen! That is what will happen to YOUR enemies that YOU are facing – IF you will start Praising God
Sign-up for my free 20 day devotional, The Word Before Work Foundations, at http://TWBWFoundations.com By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. (Hebrews 11:8)Last week, we debunked the myth that Christians should wait for an amorphous “sense of peace” before making big decisions. This morning, I'm sharing the first of three biblical truths that can grow our confidence to make decisions at work and at home. Here it is: God rarely gives us all the information we want before making a decision. That may not sound freeing, but trust me, it is. Hang with me for a minute.Genesis 12:1 tells us that God asked Abraham to leave behind his country, people, and family and head to an undisclosed location—clearly information Abraham would have loved to have known before deciding whether or not he would obey. But as we just read in Hebrews 11:8, Abraham obeyed God despite the fact that “he did not know where he was going.” Do you think Abraham experienced a warm and fuzzy “feeling” of peace about making this move? I doubt it.Just like Abraham, God doesn't give you and me all the information we feel we need to make important decisions at work and at home. Through His Word, His people, and the Spirit's leading, God often only gives us clarity about one step at a time. He gives us wisdom to discern “the next right thing” and then expects us to step out in faith even if we don't “feel a peace” about where that next right thing might lead. At the risk of offering two Frozen II references in a single paragraph, oftentimes God calls us “into the unknown.”This truth is paradoxically freeing. If we grasp this, we can stop waiting for an unreliable feeling of peace, and start relying on the certain peace that comes from recognizing that if God took care of our eternal needs, He will surely care for our temporal ones. Here's what one of my favorite Bible teachers, Jen Wilkin, says on this topic: “We want a peek into what's next. For the unbeliever, it's horoscopes, palm readings, and tarot cards. For the believer, it's much the same thing, loosely draped in religious trappings: asking God for an extrabiblical sign, claiming a Bible promise out of context…We tell ourselves that if we knew the future, we would put that knowledge to good use, but how likely is that? It's far more likely that we would use that knowledge to stoke the flames of our self-reliance and to forward our own interests.”Man, that's good.Chances are that God's not going to give you all the information you want before you make a decision about that job, product launch, or move. Let that truth free you to make a choice and rely more on Him and His assurance of peace in the process.

Sermon Overview Scripture Passage: Romans 8:28-31 Salvation, from start to finish, is of the Lord. It is only by the grace of God that we can be sure of our salvation. Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” There are five foundational facts on which our faith rests. The first fact is God's foreknowledge of our salvation. God knew we were going to be saved before we did. When God foreknows something, it is not an educational guess; He sees the beginning, middle, and end of everything, all at once. Second, we can be sure of our predestination to be like Jesus. “For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren” (Romans 8:29). Adrian Rogers says, “God doesn't predestine some people to go to Hell, and God doesn't predestine some people to go to Heaven. God predestines every child of God, everyone who is born again, to be like Jesus.” God wants everyone to be saved, but in order for love to be love, it cannot be forced. So God gave us free will; whether we want to be saved or not is up to us. Third, we are sure that God foreknew we would be saved: “Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called…” (Romans 8:30). Whenever the Gospel is preached, God is calling people to salvation. Through His Word and His Spirit, God can make the spiritually blind see things they've never seen before. Fourth and fifth, we can be sure of our settled justification, and finally, our eternal glorification. “...whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified” (Romans 8:30). The basis of our justification is the blood of Jesus Christ; it becomes effective when we trust in Him. As a result, God no longer deals with us as sinners, but as servants. As servants, God already sees us in Heaven, in His heart and mind, settled and glorified. And what has been settled in Heaven cannot be annulled or undone in time. Apply it to your life Are you sure of your salvation? Adrian Rogers says, “If you'll put your faith where God has put your sins, on the Lord Jesus Christ, you can be absolutely sure.”
The Gift of Life: Luke 7: 11-17The Bible records three instances where Jesus resurrected someone from the dead. One was His close friend Lazarus who had been dead four days and was already in his tomb when Jesus called Him back to life. This story is about Jesus going into the city of Nain with His disciples followed by a crowd of people. As Jesus was approaching the gates of the city another group of people were coming out mourning and carrying a coffin of a young man. He was the only son of his mother, who was a widow. When Jesus saw her weeping He had compassion on her and said, “Do not weep.” Jesus approached the open coffin and touched it which caused the men who were carrying it to stop and be still. In Jewish culture, touching a dead person or a coffin was an unclean act. Jesus said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.” The son sat up in the coffin and began to speak. Jesus presented him to his mother. The book of Luke states that fear (reverence and deep respect for God) came upon the crowd and they glorified God. In the story of Lazarus, he was a close friend of Jesus. Here Jesus does not have a relationship with this widow, a stranger to Him, but He has compassion on her. She had lost her husband and now her only son. She didn't ask for a miracle and Jesus didn't ask her if she wanted it. He knew her pain and raised her son back to life without her asking for it, earning it, or even expecting it. It was a gift of love and compassion during her time of sorrow. When Jesus went to the cross to pay for our sins, it was a gift of love and compassion. God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him would not perish but have eternal life. Jesus raised the widow's son and presented him to his mother. God raised His Son, Jesus, from the dead and presented Him to us if we would receive Him as our Savior. Jesus came to give us life and life more abundantly.Life can have moments of sorrow and deep grief especially when we lose a loved one, a relationship, a marriage, a job, income, an opportunity, or even control over ourselves and our emotions. Jesus knows our pain and wants to comfort us. As a believer, we know that God has given us eternal life, but He has also given us His Word that is full of good promises. Through His Word and prayer or communication with Him, we can go through life's trials and still find joy and peace. (John 3:16; John 10:10; James 1:2-4; Phil. 4:6-7)Personal Development Tip of the week: Have you ever heard the phrase “know your circle”? It refers to the peer group you surround yourself with on a day-to-day, week-to-week basis. A lot of us overlook how important our peer group is but, in reality, the quality of our life has a lot to do with the expectations of our peer group. We rise and fall to the expectation of the people we surround ourselves with so we have to remember we get around people who want the best for us and inject faith into our lives not fear into our hearts. Here are some important questions to consider when evaluating the people you surround yourself with. Is there someone in your life who consistently makes you feel bad about yourself or your life? Is there someone in your group who is constantly trying to influence you in a negative way?Is there someone in your life who shouldn't be?If you answered yes to any of these questions, consider starting to distance yourself from the person. I know this is not always the easiest thing to do at first but the people you hang out with have one of the strongest influences on your life.Prayer for the week: Dear Heavenly Father, I am praying over this individual's week. Thank you for a new week lord and another opportunity to grow closer to you and your calling ove
God gives His Children a spiritual insight that this world lacks. Through His Word, He has warned us of the tactics that the enemy will use to fool people. Lately, reading the headlines can feel like reading straight out of the book of Revelation, but the world will call you crazy if you try to point that out. As Pastor Mark will explain in this teaching, the signs of the times are undeniable. The stage is set for a one-world government and digital tracking that could easily morph into a mark of the Beast. It's time for us to get serious about reaching the lost for Jesus.

Sermon ManuscriptTake a moment to think about all the ways in which God's people are to support one another.• Encouragement in Christ when we're down.• Godly wisdom in the midst of conflict. • We're to comfort each other when grieving• Praying for each other.• Help to discern truth (God's truth) from error. • Challenging one another when tempted to sin or stuck in a pattern of sin. • Helping when needs arise. • Identifying cultural idols and how to avoid them. • Knowing and applying God's Word in relationships and in ministry. • The list could go on.One of the beautiful things about the body of Christ is how God uses each of us to minister to each of us. As you know, it's never perfect. We should strive to mature in our love and care for one another. Strive to grow in our understanding of God's call in these areas. Why? Because it's the local church that is God's ordained means for the care of his people in these areas and more. And all of this needs to be overseen by and modeled by the elders of the local church. “Overseen by” meaning the elders of the church are spiritually responsible for the care of God's people and ministries. And “modeled by” meaning the elder's lives need to point to Christ as they participate in and lead in these areas. To say it in a different way – It's a joint effort. Each of you is given different gifts in order to minister to one another. The elder's role is to spiritually support, spiritually protect, and spiritually guide the church. It begins with the Gospel in his own life. That's the message of these verses. The apostle Paul had ministered alongside the church in Ephesus for three years. This is the last time that he will be with them. He wanted to remind the elders of their spiritual responsibility. This is kind of like a commencement speech. Have you every been to a high school or college graduation? The speaker's message is usually a “go forth and do this” or “be this” or “know this.” This is similar. Especially the second half of Paul's message. Paul was commissioning the elders – exhorting them in God's call in their role. Now, you may be thinking “this doesn't really apply to me… I'm not an elder… or I don't want to be an elder… can't be one. I'm just going to tune out.” I get it, but let me tell you why this is important to all of us. • First, this is how God has ordered his church. Back in chapter 15, we saw how the elders came together to address a broader church-wide theological matter. And here in chapter 20, the role of elder is specifically applied to the local church. Knowing God's vision for the local church will help each of us understand and support that ordained vision.• Second, when you are struggling with something, when you need spiritual help and prayer, knowing the role and responsibly of your elders will help when either you come to them or why they are reaching out to you.• And third – these verses help you know how to pray for your elders in their role… and as part of that help identify men who may be qualified as elders. So, this sermon is for all of us. And if you look in your bulletin, you'll see where we are headed. The outline serves both as a summary and a structure. It's sort of in sentence form, so let me read it and if you would, follow along. “To the elders appointed by God who oversee his church: (1) shepherd the flock of God for Christ has died for her, (1a) carefully attending to your own faith and practice in Christ, (1b) protecting her from spiritual attacks opposed to Christ, (1c) caring for, praying for, and ministering to her needs in Christ, (2) all through His Word and Spirit unto eternity.”One thing is clear in these verses: God is the one who chooses elders. It says it right there in verse 28, “the Holy Spirit has made you overseers.” The word for elder and overseer in the Greek are used interchangeably in the New Testament… including this chapter. Yes, God uses his people to identify qualified elders and his church to appoint elders, but it is God who is at work in that process. The role of elder is God-ordained. This is God's design for his church. And notice the word “overseer” is plural –“overseers.” Pastor Chuck reminded us last week of the Biblical idea of a plurality of elders. Multiple elders, like here in Ephesus, spiritually overseeing the church. That's all helpful background – how God's plan for the local church includes elders. And the big idea here… the main question of these verses is this “what are God's intended responsibilities for his elders?” It's an important question because if we apply the world's vision of leadership to the church, it often leads to a misunderstanding or misapplication of the Biblical role of elders in the church. Shepherd the flock of God for Christ has died for herLet me step back for a moment. I want to do something different this morning than I usually do. Usually as we work through a text of Scripture; we first look at how it applies to the original situation; then how it applies to us… and finally how various aspects of the Gospel are worked out. The Gospel being the work of Christ in our salvation. Well, I want to flip that around today and begin with the Gospel. Look at the end of verse 28. “… the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained by his own blood!” It's right there. The foundation of all of this, the foundation of the church, the foundation of the elder's responsibly… its all Christ. If you are a believer in Jesus as your Savior. If you've turned your life to him and he is your Lord: • Then you are his and you are part of his church. • He bought you with an infinite price. That price was his blood which he shed for you on the cross. • The debt that you couldn't pay was paid. • You have been ransomed and redeemedYou are a child of the King. All the blessings and benefits of being a child of God, being united to him are yours in Christ. And one of the great benefits is being part of his flock – his fold. The imagery here is of sheep and a shepherd.Jesus has taught over and over that he is the great shepherd. He cares for and protects and saves his sheep. He pursues his lost sheep. He fends off wolves. And as the great shepherd, as he says in John 10:11, he laid down his life for his sheep. This is foundational to understanding the role and responsibility of an elder. Paul was saying to them, “you are called to shepherd the flock. It's not ultimately your flock, it's God's flock. He is the great shepherd. As he has gone before you as the great shepherd, so you are called to shepherd, and lead and serve.”Shepherd the flock of God for Christ has died for her (he's died for you if you are his by faith). If you look back at the outline – you'll see three main responsibilities of elders from these verses. And each responsibility is connected to this – to Christ – to His Gospel. That's what it all goes back to. In other words, Jesus is the foundation, the example, and the motivation for the role of elder.Let's take those three responsibilities one at a time.Carefully attending to your own faith and practice in ChristFirst, carefully attend to your own faith and practice in Christ. I mean, that's right where Paul begins in these verses. The first 5 words. “Pay careful attention to yourselves.” He's referring to their own lives and practice. The most important responsibility that an elder has …is his own life. It is the most important - his devotion to Christ, his character, his beliefs about God and the Gospel. There are two texts of Scripture that specifically talk about the role of elder. 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1. And do you know what's interesting? Both of those passages are about the qualification of elders. They are about his life and heart. Here are some of those qualifications. First from Paul's first letter to Timothy “[He must be] above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.” Paul wrote a similar list in Titus but adds this: “He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.”The picture we're given of the elder in God's church is a man who faithfully seeks to live his life according to God's Word; who is humble and teachable, caring and thoughtful; one who knows the Word of God and is able to teach it and defend it.This faith and practice emanate out of a love for Christ and His flock - someone who sees Jesus' model of humility and servant leadership as the role model for the elders in Jesus' church. And also, the apostle Paul modeled this for them. Jump down to verse 33. He says, “I coveted no one's silver or gold or apparel.” If Paul lived today… maybe he would have had an old flip-phone… A laptop that was 10 years old. A car with 300,000 miles on it… and getting his clothes at Goodwill… Honestly, we don't know exactly how this worked out in his life, but he was certainly not a lover of money or things. His life was committed to the Gospel. Paul modeled, as Jesus did, humility for the elders. An elder carefully attends to his own life and practice in and through Christ. That's first and primary.Protecting her from spiritual attacks opposed to ChristThese next two responsibilities come out of that next little phrase in verse 28 “Pay careful attention… to all the flock” Watch over yourself, first and foremost, but then watch over the flock of God. I know we've been mostly parked in verse 28. But it's like the springboard for the rest of these verses.Pay careful attention to the flock in two ways. 1. Protecting the church from spiritual attacks opposed to Christ, and 2. Caring for, praying for, and minister to her needs in ChristThese are the next two elder responsibilities listed in the outline. They come from the next few verses. Look at 29 and 30. Fierce wolves “will come in among you not sparing the flock” and verse 30 – “even among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things.”We're talking spiritual attacks from inside and from outside the flock. Lies and false hopes. “Twisted things.” You know, its usually not the up-front false worldly philosophy that draws people away from the Gospel. No, rather, it's when the truth is twisted. Slightly. Where it may sound good, but the truth has been compromised. This is what the devil wants to do – pervert the truth. It's what he did back in the beginning – Genesis 3. You see, it's those subtle things that twist the Gospel truth – or twist Biblical morality… like around matters of sexuality… that draw sheep away from the fold. That's why Paul exhorted the Ephesian elders to “be alert” verse 31. In other words:• Stand up for truth• Be firm on the Gospel of grace• Don't let the wolves come in and steal away the sheep with deceit, with false teaching about salvation and righteousness, through the latest cultural idols• Don't let the wolves in sheep's clothing draw away the sheep with twisted truth • Be alert… know and live the righteousness that God calls us to in Christ. To be a shepherd, you had to be one tough dude. Think of king David. As a shepherd boy, he killed lions and bears. 1 Samuel 17 verses 34-36. Imagine being a shepherd. You have your staff – your shepherd's crook. What do you do if it's night and you hear the faint howl a wolves, and then see their shadowy figures approaching and surrounding your sheep?A few years ago, we were on one of our RV camping trips. I remember it was late at night. We were in a very remote place. And we started hearing coyote calls. They got closer and closer. I took a flashlight and out of the front window I could see these beady eyes staring back at me 30 yards away. In a panic, I was like, lets lock the windows and doors and close the bathroom roof hatch… as if a coyote could open a door or window or climb onto the roof! Of course, we were safe. But I'm not quite sure what I would have done if we were outside in a tent! A good shepherd is on alert, especially at night, ready to protect his flock.Protecting the fold of God means having wisdom and knowledge; having a firm life foundation to confront the spiritual attacks however they may come. Confront them with the Word and with the Gospel. That can be difficult at times. But our great confidence is in Christ and His word and the work of His spirit. We know that in the end – all the enemies of faith will be defeated and truth will prevail. That is great hope. So shepherding the flock involves protecting the church. That's part of the elder's responsibility in shepherding.Caring for, praying for, and ministering to her needs in ChristShepherding the flock also involves caring for the flock. Leading the church by spiritually caring for the church. Caring in all those areas I began with - discouragement, pain, conflict, temptation, sin. It involves faithfully teaching and encouraging the body of Christ. And to reiterate, the caring of the God's flock is a community involvement, but the elders have a responsibility to oversee the care and love especially in spiritual matters. The first part of verse 35 “In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak…” Weak here is not in a negative sense, rather those who have needs - spiritual and physical needs. The elders are called to see that the needs of the body are being met – that's clear in several places in Acts. And part of that responsibility is equipping others as God has bestowed gifts of grace.Paul ends verse 35 with a reminder of Jesus words, that, “‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.'” There's a great blessing that comes from serving and giving and loving… pouring out our lives for the building up of God's church.Ok, I want to get practical and particular. What does that look like here at Tucker Pres? Well, there are some visible things. For one, the elders are involved in teaching the Bible in different ways, even preaching. We've all been blessed by David, Jeff, Chuck, and Tim. Helping to lead our worship – particularly in prayer because of the responsibility the elders have for prayer. (By the way, in our church government, I'm also an elder – my role is pastor but I'm one of our elders.) And if I could encourage you, when we meet, usually monthly, to discuss church matters, the first thing we do is pray for you, our members, our regular attenders, those whom we've met who have visited. We pray for each of you in the areas we are aware of – for the Lord's blessing and protection, through discouragement and pain, for jobs and homes, for family members, and through struggles. You may have been called, or texted, or visited by myself or one of our elders to see how you are, to ask how to pray, to pray with you, to encourage you in Christ, to read Scripture - God's Word. If you are in the hospital, we want to come and be with you and pray. Now, COVID policies have restricted some of that. There are things that we're not aware of. Please reach out when you need someone to encourage you… or talk and pray through a complicated situation or when you need spiritual guidance. There are difficult times as well. If you are struggling with an addiction – the elders are not here to beat you over the head but to come along side and pray and help in various ways. If you are struggling in your marriage – same. I know it may feel intimidating for a pastor or elder to come over and meet with a couple in a difficult situation, but that is part of what it means to spiritually care for the flock. To be sure, there will be times when we will fail and need your grace. Elders have their own burdens - sometimes work is overwhelming or other things come up. We ask for your grace and patience at times. This is one reason why multiple elders are there to support the local church. In these three elder responsibilities: (1) a life, practice, and belief that exalts Christ, (2) spiritually protecting and teaching the church, and (3) caring for the flock – I think it's probably clear by now that this is a very different model than the corporate board of directors. Yes, the elders of a church have the responsibility to make decision for the congregation. What often happens, though, is that business leadership skills get confused with spiritual leadership. Elders become appointed and act as decision makers detached from the spiritual needs of the congregation. In some churches and cultures, the elders are seen as above the people. That's not the teaching here… nor is it Jesus' model of servant leadership. A “corporate board” model or a “high and mighty” elder model leads a church down a difficult road. To be sure, I'm not devaluing business leadership – in fact, I very much value organization leadership and communication. But the spiritual role of elder is wholly different. He is someone who can weep with those who weep; he knows his Bible and can teach the Word; he can stand firm on the Gospel over an against the internal and external spiritual threats; and he can pray for and spiritual care for the flock of God in Christ.Through His Word and Spirit unto eternityIn closing, I want to briefly touch upon the last point: Through His Word and Spirit unto eternityLook at verse 32. Paul said to them, “And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified.”He was committing them to God and His Word with an eternal view, with eyes that see Jesus in heaven, encouraging them to look forward to that day when they will be with him in Glory. This is the hope and promise of Christ that is eternal. And it's the hope found in the Word. The very word of God through the His Spirit is what builds them up – the Ephesian elders – and builds the flock up in Christ. Strengthening them, protecting, them, and assuring them of God's eternal promises. And what happens when a church embraces this model, God's model of spiritual elder leadership? Well, we're given a glimpse. The church in Ephesus was a family of God. They loved and cared for each other. We see that right there in the last 3 verses. Paul was leaving and they wept and embraced one another. Why, because what Paul had demonstrated, they had fulfilled. The flock of God, cared for, protected, taught in the truth, and ministered to in Christ – all under the leadership of faithful elders committed to God's call for his church.

Scripture of the Day: Acts 20:36 “When Paul had finished speaking, he knelt down with all of them and prayed.” The Power of Praise (part one) When you praise God, especially when you sing praises to Him, things will begin to change. Amen! Judah then went in on a mop up operation and just gathered all the spoils that were left behind!...
In the world of art, the most underappreciated and maligned member has to be… the frame. When does anyone ever joyfully exclaim, “I’ve been framed!” Never. And yet the frame is what helps us to focus our attention on what is essential in the picture within in. It provides a clear boundary between what is being portrayed and everything else. An essential part of our development as God’s people is letting Him frame us as well. Through His Word, His Spirit and His people, He clarifies what is important in our lives as individuals and as a community, and what needs to be let go. Have you been framed? Have we let God frame Christ Church? Let’s talk about it…

Life is full of turmoil and often, often that turmoil breads fear in our hearts. And instead of stopping, we just kind of – go with the fear. Well it's time to stop and know that God is God. Our Refuge and Strength This week is the third message in a series of programmes that I have called “Do Not Be Afraid”. Fear is an incredibly powerful force – for two reasons. Firstly it is a natural response when something happens to threaten us or our loved ones or our possessions, fear grips us. In a sense, it's a human response. But the more we go through that; the more we experience fear, the more – for many people – they learn the habit of fear. In other words, fear becomes more and more the normal response. There is an alternative of course; to learn how to deal with fear; to master fear with each new experience. But most people instead of growing through fearful experiences, actually, they go down and down and down into a bondage of fear and life is full of fear and worry. So many people spend so much of their lives worrying about this, that or the other. Do you think I am over estimating, do you? Do you think I am overstating the problem perhaps? Recently, during the global economic crisis, it was interesting to watch how it was reported – even the TV reporters and the newspaper reporters were fearful. You could see it in their faces on TV – you could hear it in voices on the radio – you could see it in the headlines on the front page of the newspaper – "THE WORST GLOBAL FINANCIAL CRISIS IN DECADES". "BANKS ON THE BRINK". "GOVERNMENTS SHORE UP BANKS". Sure, it was international; the banks were at risk, but here in Australia at least, we were blessed by a very solid banking system, but if you listen to the media and the government and the banks, oh, it was terrible and they needed to be propped up. And the more they reported fearfully, the more fearful we all became and the worse the world economy became. See, fear is a downward spiral; fear is about a loss of confidence. On the TV news, one well known crisis counselling service reported a dramatic increase in the numbers of people experiencing not only stress, but in fact, mental illness through the fear of losing their homes – up from just a handful each year to several hundred per week. Now we generally don't cope well with fear. When we are afraid we start thinking irrationally. Fear truly grips us – we see all the fearful things and let our imaginations run away with those and we forget to take stock of our assets – the things that we actually have; the things that are on our side. And so what these four programmes are about, in this series “Do Not Be Afraid”, is kind of giving us an opportunity by looking at what God says in His Word, an opportunity to relearn our response to fear. So what we have to do, instead of resorting to panic, resting in the sovereignty of God. And so today, I just want to look at one Psalm, Psalm 46 which is all about that very thing. Let's read just the first few verses together: God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change; though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam; though the mountains tremble with its tumult. That's a good start! God is our refuge and our strength, a very present help in time of trouble. And really it's only in time of trouble that we are afraid. It's only in those disastrous times that we are gripped with fear and doom and gloom; when the world is against us; when people are against us; when the economy is against us. And now look at the picture that the Psalmist paints – I want you to understand something about the Hebrew culture which is the culture that the Psalmist was writing into – they love picture language, and this language evokes real emotion. Psalm 46, verses 2 and 3: Though the earth should change; though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam; though the mountains tremble with its tumult. Ever been in an earthquake? I have, just a small one, actually it was some years ago now when my wife Jacqui and I were on our honeymoon on the South Island of New Zealand – one of the most beautiful and picturesque places on the planet – truly – and we were staying at a Bed and Breakfast on a sheep farm. We were having breakfast in this old country kitchen with a few other couples in this beautiful place – big old blue and white plates on display on the sideboard and the bacon and eggs was cooking away and you looked out the window and there were green fields and white sheep and snow capped mountains in the background. It was all good – life couldn't have been better – we didn't have a care in the world. Then all of a sudden the ground shook – man did it shake – there was this immediate sense of panic. And that's the picture the Psalmist is painting here: Though the earth should change; the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; the waters roar and foam; the mountains tremble with tumult. See, the Hebrews; they weren't a seafaring nation. The notion of foaming waters and mountains falling into the ocean was absolutely horrific to them. And it's when our life gets shaken to the core like that that fear grips us. It's not until then that we have a deep need to hear God's Word in our hearts – “Do not be afraid.” When we look like losing our homes in a financial crisis, we are shaken to the core. When a loved one is dying, we are shaken to the core. When we discover that the child we love is addicted to drugs or injured in an accident or ... or whatever it is – when the mountains collapse into the roaring, foaming sea and the earth beneath our very feet shakes, then … then we need something – then we need an antidote to our fear. Listen to these few verses again. Listen, let the words sink in: “There is a river”, verse 4, Psalm 46: There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of that city; it shall not be moved; God will help it when the morning dawns. The nations are in uproar, the kingdoms totter; He utters His voice and the earth melts. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. See, this is the solution to the problem – God is our refuge; God is our strength; God is our very present help in time of trouble. In other words, He is right here … right here when we need Him – no "ifs", no "buts" – right here. The problem is we can find that so hard to believe – it's so counter intuitive – it's so impossible. How can God possibly … possibly make a difference in the middle of my fear? Well! Gladness in the City of God In the days when this Psalm was written, nations often invaded other nations – it's just the way it was. And of course, little has changed in this world. There are still somewhere between forty and fifty wars raging in this world today – here and now. I just had an email from one of our staff in Africa who is having difficulties getting the programme CDs through to a couple of new stations who want to air them, because of the fighting that is going on around in those areas. Back when this Psalm was written, what the people did was they fortified their cities. They built walls around them to protect them from invading armies. They built defences and towers so the cities were safe. And they were often sited strategically on hilltops or with natural obstacles around to make them much harder to attack. In fact those walls were often so strong that they were impenetrable and so armies who wanted to attack them would lay siege to them. Sieges could last weeks, months, years – the idea was to starve them out of that impenetrable citadel. We read about one such siege – if you have a Bible, open it at Second Kings in the Old Testament, chapter 6, verse 25. Let's just read about a siege for a moment. As the siege continued, famine in Samaria became so great that a donkey's head was sold for eighty shekels of silver and one forth of a kab of dove's dung for five shekels of silver. Now as the King of Israel was walking on the city wall, a woman cried out to him, “Help, my lord King!” He said, “No! Let the Lord help you. How can I help you - from the threshing floor or from the wine press?” But then the King asked her, “What is your complaint?” She answered, “This woman said to me, “Give up your son; we will eat him today and we will eat my son tomorrow.” So we cooked my son and ate him. The next day I said to her, “Give up your son and we will eat him,” but she has hidden her son.” When the King heard the words of the woman, he tore at his clothes. Desperate stuff, isn't it? Can you imagine mothers eating their children and the King has no hope? And you see, when there is an army ready to strike you down; when we feel like we are under siege, as these people of Samaria were in their citadel, it's not enough to have a safe place to flee. We need to have food and water and joy and peace in that place. You see these Samarians were under siege – they were in a safe place but they were dying of starvation – they had no hope, no joy, no peace. So many people in fear – they retreat to what they think is a safe place; they think it is – they cut other people off, they withdraw, they build defences, they close off the rest of the world and yet this is such a miserable, fearful place. People live for years under siege of fear like that and it ruins their lives. So come the next four verses of this Psalm. We looked at them earlier; we are going to look at them again now. They tell us about a place of refuge and strength that is quite different. Have a listen again. Psalm 46, beginning at verse 4 – remember the Psalmist just talked about the mountains falling into the sea and the seas foaming and this fearful thing happening. Have a listen to his answer again. But … There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God; the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of that city and it shall not be moved. God will help it when the morning dawns. The nations are in an uproar, the kingdoms totter; He utters His voice, and the earth melts. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. See, this city … this citadel, is not just safe but it is glad: “There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God.” A citadel, God's protection but also God's blessing in that place. Rivers of holy water – something Jesus talked about in John chapter 7, verse 38, the Holy Spirit flowing into us and out of us. Here, God talks about His River, of His Spirit and His joy and His peace flowing into our place of refuge when we take refuge in Him. It's not only safe but glad because God Himself is in the midst of that city; in the midst of this place and it shall not be moved. It is rock solid! Psalm 46, verse 1 says: God is our refuge and our strength; a very present help in trouble. You know something? The worst time when we are afraid is night time – have you ever noticed that - the sleepless nights – tossing and turning and things churning around in our minds and descending into this dark pit of fear, deeper, deeper into the abyss of fear? And that's why, here in verse 5: God will help when the morning dawns. You know that sick feeling of fear in our stomachs; when we are petrified of what will happen to us? This isn't just for fruit cakes or losers or people who will never succeed – this is for all of us – we all go through times of fear and God wants us to hear His Words: “Do not be afraid”. There is such a sharp contrasting picture here – between the mountains collapsing into a roaring fearsome sea; between the earthshaking and on the other hand this rock solid city … this city of God into which flows the river of God's gladness in which God Himself dwells with us. “The nations are in an uproar; the kingdoms are tottering but He utters His voice and the earth melts. The Lord of Hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.” The nations may well be in an uproar; there may well be wars raging; the world economic system may well be in meltdown but when God speaks the earth melts – God is with us; He is our refuge. How does God speak? Through His Word! When is God speaking? Right now! God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, the mountains tremble with its tumult. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of the city and it shall not be moved. God will help it when the morning dawns. The nations are in uproar, the kingdoms totter; He utters His voice and the earth melts. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Problem is how do we believe that? How do we get a handle of that? How do we experience that? How can we dwell in that city of safety and gladness – come on – how? Be Still Let me ask you that same question again. The question is: how do we believe in this city of gladness? How do we get a handle on that? How do we experience that? Well, God give us the answer in the last four verses of this Psalm. Let's take a look together: Psalm 46, verses 8 to 11: Come, behold the works of the Lord; see what desolations He has brought on the earth. He makes wars to cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow, and shatters the spear; He burns the shields with fire. “Be still and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations; I am exalted in the earth.” The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge When it comes to fear, we have short memories. We go through something scary and God shows up and somehow it all works out fine. Perhaps we remember to say “Thank You, God”, often we don't. And then things calm down again. They go along just brilliantly for a while and then the next storm hits and it's raging and we are afraid and fearful and life's a mess and we are running around like chooks with their heads cut off and we are living through some excruciatingly debilitating, immobilising fear – fear that comes when the ground moves beneath our feet. And we forget … we forget to look back and remember all the times that God showed up and brought us through those storms before. And even if we don't have many of those to look back on; let's say, worse case, we have none of those to look back on – let's assume that you and I have just, this moment, come to faith in Jesus Christ – just this moment put our lives in His hands – we've not experienced enough to look back on where we know that He showed up, without doubt, but He stepped in and saved us. We forget to look back on the God of the Bible and see how many times He stepped in to help His people. We do! It's what He does! And that's what the Psalmist is reminding us here in these words: Psalm 46, verses 8 and 9: Come, behold the works of the Lord and see what desolations He has brought on the earth. He makes wars to cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow and shatters the spear and burns the shields with fire. God is saying, “Don't you realise that this is what I do? I protect My people. I make sure that it all works out. Get a handle on this!” "But God, how ... how can I get a handle on this? You don't understand; I've got all this pain happening. I've got all this fear happening. People are after me – my finances are in a mess. My loved ones are sick. My emotions are on a rollercoaster. The mountains are falling into the sea. The sea is angry and foaming and the ground is shaking and the nations are raging ... how do I get a handle on this?" Here's the answer, right here in God's Word – listen to it, remember it, let the Spirit of God write it on your heart. Psalm 46, verse 10: Be still and know that I am God! For I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth. It sounds so simple, “Be still and just know.” But you know something? When we are afraid often the last thing we do is get still before God. Even when we are praying, we rant on and we don't shut up for long enough to hear Him speak - over and over and over again, I have had to learn this one. I'm like you – this doesn't come naturally. It is something I have had to learn – when I am travelling through fearful places and situations and times, more than ever, those are the times to take the time to get still before the Lord. Not just once, not just twice ... every morning; every time fear grips our hearts – just to draw away for a few minutes and just rest and say, "Lord, just speak to me – just witness Your Spirit to me. Just give me your peace. Lord, I'm here, I'm afraid, I just need to get still before You." I want to open a few simple passages … passages that God put there to write His faith into our hearts. We are going at these passages a whole bunch more next week on the programme. This particular Psalm is a favourite of mine – I come back to Psalm 46 again and again when I'm in one of those places of fear and turmoil. But listen to Philippians chapter 4, verse 13: I can do all things through Him who strengthens me. Romans chapter 8, verse 31: For if God is for us, who can be against us? Now when we just get still before God, those two verses are so short, even I can memorise them. Philippians 4:13: I can do all things through Him who strengthens me. Romans chapter 8, verse 31: If God is for us, who can be against us? When we get still before God and we let those two Scriptures ring out in our heart, watch out devil; watch out fear because they are going to go away. When we just get still and focus on God and wait, day after day, wait! Because of what Psalm 46 tells me is the reality of God's gladness and His power and His protection – that He is so far above my circumstances. What Philippians chapter 4 tells me – that I can do all things through Him who strengthens me. What Romans chapter 8, verse 31 tells me – that if God is for me, who can be against me? See, God's Word promises us this! And then, it tells me just to sit still and wait and you know what happens when I do that? I experience the confidence that I need to make it through – not self-confidence, God confidence. I get a handle of the great unseen reality – God Himself – His power flows into me and through me. His peace guards my heart and mind and all of a sudden the panic goes away. All of a sudden the fear is replaced with faith. All of a sudden I have the clarity to think through the problem and to face realities and to do what I have to do and to trust in God for the things that I can't do. Let me tell you, ten minutes later – half an hour later, half a day later – the panic wants to come back; the fear wants to come back and when they come knocking on the door of my heart, I get still with God again – I go back to Him again. I wait on Him, expecting and waiting – that's what it means to live in that city and to drink of the streams of that river that make glad the city of God. We need to drink … drink Him in; His presence; His Spirit; His Word and then a peace that surpasses all understanding, guards our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Be still and know that I am God.

Jesus Christ has done everything. Now He calls us to agree, walk with Him and submit to His victory. Through His Word and Spirit, as well as our words and our Spirit, we will advance into perfection. The post Agreeing with God appeared first on Jubilee Church.
# 1. Through His Word > Now they told David, “Behold, the Philistines are fighting against Keilah and are robbing the threshing floors.” Therefore David inquired of the LORD, “Shall I go and attack these Philistines?” And the LORD said to David, “Go and attack the Philistines and save Keilah.” But David's men said to him, “Behold, we are afraid here in Judah; how much more then if we go to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?” Then David inquired of the LORD again. And the LORD answered him, “Arise, go down to Keilah, for I will give the Philistines into your hand.” And David and his men went to Keilah and fought with the Philistines and brought away their livestock and struck them with a great blow. So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah. > — 1 Samuel 23:1-5 (ESV) > When Abiathar the son of Ahimelech had fled to David to Keilah, he had come down with an ephod in his hand. > — 1 Samuel 23:6 (ESV) > Now it was told Saul that David had come to Keilah. And Saul said, “God has given him into my hand, for he has shut himself in by entering a town that has gates and bars.” > — 1 Samuel 23:7 (ESV) > 8 And Saul summoned all the people to war, to go down to Keilah, to besiege David and his men. 9 David knew that Saul was plotting harm against him. And he said to Abiathar the priest, “Bring the ephod here.” 10 Then David said, “O Lord, the God of Israel, your servant has surely heard that Saul seeks to come to Keilah, to destroy the city on my account. 11 Will the men of Keilah surrender me into his hand? Will Saul come down, as your servant has heard? O Lord, the God of Israel, please tell your servant.” And the Lord said, “He will come down.” 12 Then David said, “Will the men of Keilah surrender me and my men into the hand of Saul?” And the Lord said, “They will surrender you.” 13 Then David and his men, who were about six hundred, arose and departed from Keilah, and they went wherever they could go. When Saul was told that David had escaped from Keilah, he gave up the expedition. 14 And David remained in the strongholds in the wilderness, in the hill country of the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, but God did not give him into his hand. > — 1 Samuel 23:8-13 (ESV) > By using this oracle you agree that your doing so at your own risk. Authors will not be responsible for any choices based on advices from this oracle. Informations displayed within this site are not necessarily based on facts. > A contemporary believer may say, “I see that, and its all very nice, but I don't receive the kind of precise, direct guidance that David did.” Neither do I. Because I don't need it. I'm not the chosen King. It does my ego no damage to concede that David's function in salvation history is far more crucial than mine. The fortunes of the kingdom of Yahweh in this world rest far more on David's preservation than on mine. What was essential for Yahweh's elect king to have he received. For me, it is not so essential. But in principle there is no difference between this elect king and myself. In what context was Yahweh's guidance given? Was it not in access to God through the appointed priest? And is that not the privilege I enjoy? Through a much greater one than Abiathar? What, after all, does Hebrews 4:14-16 mean? “Since we have a great high priest”, we come to the throne of grace and find grace “for help at just the right time.” Knowing whether Saul will come down to Keilah can't be any better than that....

Isaiah 1:9 — There is no escape from the pentaly of sin. Scripture says that everyone has sinned, eternal punishment is the only just response by a holy God. In this sermon, Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones preaches from Isaiah 1:9 and shows the severity of our sin and how we are not able to change anything of our own accord. We deserve total destruction because of our sin. We have all rebelled against God and thus we are unholy. We have no plea. Because God is holy, He cannot allow His presence to be tainted by sin. Through His Word and what He has revealed in it about our sinfulness and the Savior He sent for our sins, we are left with no excuse. God is justified in His judgment of sinners. Dr. Lloyd-Jones reminds us that on his own, man can do nothing about his own salvation— since just one sin is enough to separate us from God, we are left incapable of doing enough good works to save ourselves. Thus, our salvation is entirely of God. Dr. Lloyd-Jones asks a crucial question: are you resting in and trusting on Jesus for your salvation? Only by believing in Jesus’ sacrifice for your sins can you be made right with God. Look at your sin, look at what Scripture says regarding the solution, and repent today!
Here is week one of our new series. In the beginning God created life, and He sustains it through His power. The life we have today and each day that we will enjoy in the future are gifts from God. James 1:7 reads, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights…” The air we breathe, the food we eat, and the places we live are all made possible because of God’s grace. Through His Word and Sacraments, we receive His grace that gives us life eternal. We receive His love that didn’t spare His only Son, and we receive His forgiveness along with His victory over sin and death. God is the giver, and we are the receivers. As God’s redeemed people, we receive God’s gifts with joy and thanksgiving. What a privilege it is to receive God’s love, grace, and mercy daily. Through faith, we become dependent upon God’s gifts, and we receive them gratefully and cheerfully.
Many have wished that God would speak to them. Psalm 19 shows how He has answered that request by speaking- 1- Through His World -verses 1-6-, 2- Through His Word -7-11-, and 3- To His Worshipper -12-14-.

It is impossible to over-emphasize the importance of the Word of God when it comes to the salvation of the soul. It is only by depending on the authority of the Bible that sinners can firmly secure their faith as sure as an anchor holds fast to a giant rock. But not only do we need this firm foundation of our faith - we need to hear it for ourselves. We need to hear God speaking to us THROUGH His Word. It is the Word of God that is able to save the soul. "Beautiful words, wonderful words, wonderful words of life!" the hymn writer could say. Have you trusted them?

Ann and her husband begin ministry to neighborhood kids. Through His Word, God prompts Anne to visit those in prison, which—like Jonah, she resists. Finally, she obeys and discovers great joy and purpose after she is widowed. Her jail ministry lasts for three decades until old age puts her in a nursing home, where many celebrate her 100th birthday. Two months later she dies and the mantle passes to one of her “adopted” kids.
