The new "Stockholm Construction & Infrastructure" report shows that the greater Stockholm region is looking to invest a total volume of EUR 115 billion Euros by 2040. The largest investment share is in housing, followed by infrastructure investments in railway, subway and light rail. Stockholm plans to grow The report examines planned investments in construction and infrastructure in the Stockholm region 2024-2040. It aims to provide an overview of the most important future investments within the Stockholm region. Commissioned by Stockholm Business Region and written by WSP AB, it summarizes the most interesting and largest construction and infrastructure projects in the Stockholm region in the coming years. It's evident that the potentially staggering 115 billion euros in construction, presents a tremendous opening for investments. In Stockholm County alone, the need for skilled construction labor is projected to reach 30-40,000 workers. We are commitment to addressing this opportunity, while at the same time driving sustainable growth and prosperity, says Caroline Strand, Acting CEO of Stockholm Business Region. By 2040, the region plans to invest a total of EUR 59 billion in housing and the report highlights some of the most innovative projects. One of the featured projects is Stockholm Wood City, a 250,000 square meter city district whose buildings are entirely made of wood. Another project highlighted is Stockholmshusen, one of the City of Stockholm's largest development projects, which aims to build thousands of new rental apartments. Around 3,300 new rental apartments will be created, spread across 25 different projects. In terms of infrastructure, the expected amount is EUR 32 billion, with key projects including the expansion of the Stockholm metro, Uppsala Light Rail, The East Link and Oslo-Sthlm 2:55. For the period 2003-2019, the total return on real estate in Stockholm has been estimated 9.4 percent per year, according to the report. This is well above the average for the 20 European metropolises included in the comparison. The report also provides a macroeconomic overview of how the region has performed historically and a forecast of how it will perform in the future. In the world of degrowth, the focus is often centred on the need for broad scale system change. However, it is often at the grassroots community level that real resistance against overdevelopment is truly and tangibly observed. For this very special episode of PGAP, we interview Annabel Paulley (Friends of Yakamia (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100086597325548)), Chris Poulton (Rethink Eastlink (https://rethinkeastlink.org/)) and Andrew St John (Safe and Scenic Toodyay Roads (https://sastr.com.au/)) to highlight the good work been done by community groups in South-Western Australia to fight the relentless tide of overdevelopment. Our first guest Annabel Paulley (interviewed 00:08:19 to 00:37:09) is a coordinator and key member of the Albany based Friends of Yakamia Forest (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100086597325548). The Friends of Yakamia have been working tirelessly to protect the titular rate payer land from being rezoned for housing and road development. The land is a fragment of the forest that once covered the northern suburbs of Albany and is home to a host of endemic and threatened plants, bird and animal species. You can find out more about Friends of Yakamia at their Facebook page here (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100086597325548). (Friends of Yakamia visiting state MP for Albany, Rebecca Stephens) Our second guest Chris Poulton ( interviewed 00:37:23 to 01:09:16) runs Summer Creek Restaurant and Brewery (https://www.summercreekrestaurantbrewery.com.au/)with his family Bakers Hill, nestled in eastern side of the Perth Hills. The property and nearby Kep track have significant historical importance to Western Australia's formative history, that will be undermined if the Eastlink highway project is passed. Find out more about Rethink Eastlink here (https://rethinkeastlink.org/). You may also wish to check out the great work from the Save Perth Hills Action Group (https://www.saveperthhills.net/). (Chris Poulton) Our third guest Dr Andrew St John (interviewed 01:09:32 to 01:23:54) is convenor of Safe and Scenic Toodyay Roads (https://sastr.com.au/). Toodyay lies on the transition between the Perth Hills and the Wheatbelt. The impact to lifestyle, legacy and the natural environment of the local scarp ecosystem is threatened by Main Roads WA and other developments (including mining and housing development). (Andrew St John) One major focus of this episode is to explore the interrelationship between the great work done at the grassroots by community action groups and the broader issue of wider system change being championed by many activists including degrowth advocates. The South-West of Western Australia is not the only region in the world in which brave citizens are defending their natural and cultural environments from the march of development, progress and concrete. Similar fights are occurring everywhere, globally, all the time. All three guests share a unique vision of their solutions to this worldwide predicament, although all are united with the view that there needs to be fundamental end to the current growth based system. Otherwise, it will be up to community groups to be perpetually putting out the spot fires. Host Michael Bayliss is joined by Mark Allen, co-host and founder of Town Planning Rebellion (https://holisticactivism.net/town-planning-rebellion-tpr/), during the intro and outro. We gain his perspective on how TPR can work with local action groups to bring critical change to Australia's broken urban planning sector. We also discuss how to have a nuanced debate on some of the thornier issues such as urban consolidation vs. urban sprawl, and visible (but seldom discussed) impacts of population growth. You can find out more about host Michael Bayliss at his website here (https://michaelbayliss.org/) and more about Mark Allen at the Holistic Activism (https://holisticactivism.net/) website. Please support PGAP by sharing this and other episodes with your networks. Do you have feedback or suggestions for future episodes? You can contact us here (https://pgap.fireside.fm/contact). We'd like to leave you with some images of Chris Poulton's property at Bakers Hill, WA, followed by a timestamp of the episode. Episode 52 That Great Business Show - Eamonn O'Reilly, CEO, Dublin Port CompanyEamonn discusses every aspect of Dublin Port, handling 84% of the country's container and trailer traffic.Dublin Port (DP) has 4,000 people working within its walls, but not working directly for DP (165 people are directly employed). The majority of workers work for companies like Stena, P&O, ICG etc.DP had turnover of €89m last year and he explains how DP makes its money. He explains why ships lie offshore DP for various reasons, over weekends.Eamonn tells us the history of hobblers and how that has changed with regular slots for ships.Ferries have fixed slots, based on best times for them commercially.DP is beginning to reach constraints capacity, and rail won't play a major role. They're going to try to squeeze more activity within the port, particularly cut down the dwell time of goods within the port. You can stack containers up to about six to be efficient. He cites Valparaiso in Chile, which is the most efficient port in the world, which passes about three times more goods through than DP.Biggest containers into DP can carry 1,200 containers but ships can carry up to 22,000.Brexit has changed the profile of the business at DP, as trade flows, like water, follows the line of least resistance. They've seen an enormous growth of goods coming directly from continental Europe. He says that trying to build houses on the DP land is an appalling idea and he explains the history of Bremore Harbour. One metre of quay wall can cost €100,000 and a quay might run 300 metres. To build Bremore he reckons might cost €4 billion plus and doubles when lands have to be remediated. The quickest all of this could be built would be 20 years.DP is the 'single most important transport infrastructure in the country'.3D printing will replace some traditional manufacturing which will have an effect on trade and therefore port volume. There will be a decoupling between port volumes and GDP growth.Cruise ship bookings are allocated two years ahead. He discusses road access to the port and the need to introduce road pricing, to help manage the capacity of our roads infrastructure.DP plans will mean a new private bridge next to the East Link or Tom Clarke Bridge. Pre-application discussions have already started with an Bord Pleanála. They're working on a 4km greenway from East Point business park, down the Tolka estuary, to the most eastern extreme point of DP, where the boats enter the port. And Eamonn's 'hire in a heartbeat' is Peter Rice, a structural engineer, who made possible the Sydney Opera Centre, the Lloyds building in London and others. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
The price of the East Link toll bridge in Dublin could soon be going up. City Councillors are considering the measure, which would see the price go up from e1.40 to e1.90. Councillors have been told that the extra €1.9m to be raised from the increased tolls would be spent on road improvement. Andrea hears from listeners... Performance poet Caitlin Saunders joins me under the disco ball in Castaway Studios for a chat about imaginary friends, favourite words and poetry! Check out the video for My Honest Poem, which was a year in the making! Produced by Rat Race Visual Media. Many thanks to Jaymee Leyana for providing the creative prompt 'Make-up Remover and Maccas' which inspired my poem this week and became title. Both Jaymee and Caitlin were special guests at the More Than A Whelan live show at Merri Creek Tavern, dedicated to the theme of melancholy. You can also see more of Jaymee's work on her Instagram page. Also many thanks to Cameron Semmens for the prompt 'Intergalactic Elephants' and Kim Jeffs for the prompt 'Frost Fractals.' Make-up Remover and Maccas Just under the lip of a freeway overpass on Eastlink there resides a Catalogue Spiritghost. Catalogue spiritghosts or Catagods as they referred to in the biz, place themselves in high traffic areas for humans and they watch and catalogue their daily toils. And the end of the day they collect their notes and report back to their superiors by riding an interstellar elephant back to an undisclosed location. This particular Catagod has a name unpronounceable by the human tongue, so we’ll just call him Ralph. Ralph has the power of knowing every single action moment of a person’s like with just one glance into their eyes. He records their struggles into a tiny star and once his bag of stars is full he knocks off for the day. On this day, an automobile passes by that catches his eye and then he catches her eye in his mind. She’s getting by as well as she can. She has been destroyed but now she is rebuilding. Heavy scaffolding surrounds the construction site of her soul. Behind the scaffolding something remarkable is happening. There is an ocean of love in her heart. This ocean is always there. It replenishes itself on a daily basis. Love is her preferred method of communication. Love of friends. Love of family. Love of words. Love of speech. She photographs the sky as a form of meditation. In the sky there is everything and nothing. She shares the sky. She is generous with her findings. Sometimes when the sky falls, she falls too in solidarity with its descent. And the night turns blue and pink and purple. And she swims through the colours like an Esther Williams bath bomb and when she comes up for air the colours are gone. That’s the price the night takes from you sometime. The ferryman always demands a fee. And in the morning all that’s left on the shore of her bedcovers is crumpled empty bag of maccas and the makeup remover she forgot to apply before she fell asleep. And she yawns and stretches and she steps from her bed to draw the curtains open and fractal frost covers the leaves of the trees as punctuation marks and the light of the day pours into her like orange juice into a glass and she turns and looks for her camera. Ralph the catagod pauses and reflects upon the life contained in the star within his palm and he says to himself ‘this will do’. And he whistles for his interstellar elephant that dutifully appears for the long ride back to an undisclosed location to report this important news to his superior. By Sean M Whelan Inspired by creative prompts from Jaymee Leyana, Cameron Semmens and Kim Jeffs. Whelan and Stealin' For Whelan and Stealin' both Caitlin and I read the work of the wonderful [Sabrina Benaim] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sabrina_Benaim). Caitlin read First Date and I read The Loneliest Sweet Potato. We finished the show discussing an hilarious incident that occurred in my life as DJ HOT WHEELS which has spurred this range of merch. And don't forget More Than A Whelan will be appearing at this years Melbourne Writers Festival!! We will be presenting at special live show called Sad Is Rad, celebrating all things melancholy through music, comedy and poetry at the Toff In Town on Sunday 8th Sept 2:30. grab your tickets here now before they're all gone!

Australians. They're all over Dynamite Hemorrhage Radio #46. The exiled convicts of yore have sprouted creative progeny several links down the generational chain, and now a week doesn't go by when some Australian band doesn't arrive in our inbox - and therefore onto this show. So DH #46 is represented well this time by Australians through the years - from the brand-new (Scrabbled, King Tears Mortuary, Clag, Straight Arrows, Southern Comfort and Eastlink) to those from nearly fifty years ago (Pip Proud, pictured here). We even tossed in some Americans, Brits and New Zealanders from the ages as well. Welcome to another week of what is turning out to be a pretty entertaining summer in the smartphone industry. Last week, Rogers bore the brunt of the blame in what the CRTC calls 'unjust discriminination' against new entrants in regards to domestic roaming. The issue at hand is exclusivity: Rogers is accused of forcing new entrants like Wind, Mobilicity, Eastlink and others to sign exclusivity agreements for domestic roaming, preventing them from negotiating with other service providers and thus keeping prices high. While the CRTC has not yet made a decision on whether it will regulate the price of domestic roaming outside of preventing incumbents from charging new entrants more than they charge their customers, the move bodes well for companies looking to expand service at reasonable costs. We delve into that issue and more in Week 7. This is SyrupCast's Domestic Roaming-apalooza. Stories discussed: CRTC: Rogers engaged in ‘unjust discrimination’ against new entrants Videotron will launch its LTE network ‘in the next few weeks’ Bell to allow Manitoban customers to roam within province at no extra cost Eastlink signs ‘unique network partner’ to expand wireless coverage Roam Mobility launches new unlimited LTE plans Canadians travelling to the U.S. can now rent smartphones with unlimited data and calling Running time: 62 minutes Hosts: Daniel Bader & Douglas Soltys

Customers of Charlottetown-based Internet provider ISN began to get word this week that the company is about to be acquired by Nova Scotia-based Eastlink. The sale represents the end of a 14 year project for ISN’s founder Kevin O’Brien. Kevin and I first met in the spring of 1993. We were essentially doing the same job — taking resources to the Internet — for two different sectors; Kevin was working for the PEI Federation of Agriculture and I was working for the PEI Crafts Council. What began with innocuous conversations about technology that spring led eventually, 18 months later, to the creation of ISN: I, in essence, goaded Kevin into creating his own ISP and was his unofficial technical co-conspirator in the early days. Over ISN’s colourful history there haven’t been many projects I’ve engaged in, from my work with the Crafts Council to the founding of Digital Island and my work with the PEI Government, to my Okeedokee partnership to Dave Moses to my current setup sharing ISN bandwidth with silverorange, where ISN hasn’t played a pivotal role. The consumption of the company by Eastlink thus represents not only the end of a project for Kevin, but also the disappearance of a human-scale bandwidth provider for the Island. Things will never be the same. As many of the early conversations where the seeds of ISN were planted took place at The Noodle House here in Charlottetown, Kevin and I returned to the scene of the crime to record a series of conversations about ISN past, present and future. We began with a discussion of what has happened, what’s ahead for existing ISN customers, and you can listen to this in the first of what will eventually be three podcast episodes/ In future episodes we’ll talk about how ISN got started, and about some of the misadventures along the way.
