The FTSE 100 opened flat with some traders probably nursing sore heads after England's last minute winner in the Euro semi-final. In early exchanges, the Footsie was up 2 at 8,196. Water companies were early risers as markets decided the price rises allowed by Ofwat for the next five years looked reasonable. United Utilities and Severn Trent were the best of the gainers. What Ofwat's decision means for struggling London supplier Thames is not clear as it can only raise prices at half the level it wanted. There was more good news for Keir Starmer as Britain's economy grew better than expected in May. Month on month, gross domestic product grew by 0.4%, an upside surprise following a zero-growth period in April, and by 0.9% over the past three months. Dr Martens also perked up after the iconic boot maker said trading had steadied in the first quarter, though it said this is seasonally its weakest. #ProactiveInvestors #marketreport #ftse #ftse100 #footsie #ofwat #unitedutilities #severntrent #thameswater #drmartens #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews

The FTSE 100 enjoyed gains this morning after UK inflation data came in better than expected. Prices rose by 4% in January, as per the ONS, which was in line with December's inflation rate but below market expectations for a 4.2% jump. Among those reporting were water firms United Utilities and Severn Trent, which both climbed after backing guidance for the year, despite an influx of storms in recent months. Dunelm also offered up results, with these showing a 4.8% rise in interim pre-tax profit to £123 million, even as the retailer noted “more difficult” trading conditions. And finally, Coca-Cola's London-listed shares soared after the drinks firm hailed record profits for the year to December. #proactiveinvestors #marketreport #ONS #inflation #UnitedUtilities #SevernTrent #Dunelm #Cocacola #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews

Angela Walker In Conversation - Inspirational Interviews, Under-Reported News
Water companies in the UK have been dumping ever-increasing amounts of sewage into our rivers and waterways. Now, a law suit could hit them where it hurts and cost them hundreds of millions of pounds. Law firm Leigh Day is leading a collective action accusing them of abusing their dominant position by over-charging customers. The action hinges on the allegation that water companies knowingly failed to report the number and extent of sewage discharges and were therefore allowed to charge customers more. The first claim has been issued against Severn Trent and further claims will be issued against Thames Water, United Utilities, Anglian Water, Yorkshire Water and Northumbrian Water. Zöe Mernick-Levene , a partner at law firm Leigh Day explains the case against them which is being brought by Professor Carolyn Roberts an environmental and water consultant.Ashley Smith from campaign group Windrush Against Sewage Pollution joins us to talk about his work and explain how mathematician Peter Hammond used AI to expose thousands of unnoticed spills. We delve into how this data is captured, scrutinized and the fact that just 1% of it is reviewed by the environment agency. We'll probe into why water companies are being secretive about data and the crucial impact of citizen scientists in pushing the case forward. We'll also be discussing the reports from dozens of elite triathletes who say they fell ill after competing in the World Championships in Sunderland's water and the response from Northumbria Water. Listen in as we scrutinise the statement issued by the Environment Agency and DEFRA .Brace yourself for a deep dive into the legal challenges faced by water companies for their pollution. Ashley unfolds the inception of Windrush Against Sewage Pollution and its efforts to expose the deteriorating condition of the River Windrush. Zöe uncovers their legal warfare using opt-out claims to make corporate giants rethink their actions. We'll also compare the water systems globally to the UK's, exploring how privatisation led to profits at the expense of infrastructure. Ending on a note of damages, we decipher how a tribunal would decide the overpayment for each customer.#WaterPollutionUK #SewageScandal #EnvironmentalJustice #WaterwayAbuse #LegalAction #CorporateAccountability #PollutionLawsuit #SewageDischarge #RiversInDanger #EnvironmentalImpact #CitizenScientists #AIExposesPollution #CleanWaterRights #CorporateMisconduct #TransparencyMatters #RiverHealth #WaterwayProtection #PrivatizationEffects #GlobalWaterSystems #PollutionConsequences #LegalChallenges #InfrastructureImpact #CorporateResponsibility #SustainabilityMatters #PollutionAwareness #EnvironmentalAdvocacySupport the showhttps://www.angelawalkerreports.com/

Image Bilberry Bumblebee (Bombus monticola) © Steven Falk “Get the Marches Buzzing” a new Buglife project, set to restore 57 hectares of lowland heath and species-rich grassland across Shropshire and North Herefordshire has received funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Severn Trent Water. Get the Marches Buzzing starts Winter 2022 and will work to restore habitats critical to the survival of the Dingy Skipper (Erynnis tages) and the Bilberry Bumblebee (Bombus monticola). This project is added to the cohort of B-Lines projects running up and down the country, from Perthshire in Scotland down to Cornwall in South England. New project aims to restore 57 hectares of Shropshire lowland heath Since the 1930s over 97% of all flower-rich grasslands has been lost, leaving our pollinators vulnerable and in serious decline; B-Lines are an imaginative and beautiful solution to this loss. B-Lines are 3km wide ‘insect pathways' running through our countryside and towns, connecting wildflower-rich habitats across the UK. These lines are to be filled with wildflowers to enable pollinators, and other wildlife, to move through our landscape to feed, nest and hibernate. Get the Marches Buzzing will see Buglife teaming up with delivery partner Herefordshire Meadows to work with landowners in North Herefordshire; restoring over 13 hectares of species-rich grassland. In Shropshire, Buglife will be working with Shavington Estate, Telford & Wrekin Council, Severn Trent and the National Trust to restore almost 44 hectares of lowland heath and species-rich grassland. Two roles will be created for this project, a Project Officer and Intern. They will oversee delivery of the habitat works; putting together a wide-reaching events programme engaging with schools, community groups, other local charities, youth clubs and reach out to people in-need through Telford and Wrekin Council's green-prescribing service. Get the Marches Buzzing will also have a strong focus on landowner engagement; working with farmer cluster groups to promote and support nature-friendly farming, as well as hosting events to showcase the work delivered with landowners and inspire further action. A series of webinars, in-person events and volunteering will share knowledge about pollinators, wildlife gardening, practical habitat restoration and species monitoring encouraging people to take action themselves and add their projects to the interactive B-Lines map. Kate Jones, Get the Marches Buzzing Project Officer said, “This project is ambitious in its scope and will do important work for wildlife across our rural and urban landscapes by working with landowners, councils and communities to restore and protect our precious habitats, for wildlife and people to enjoy. We are grateful to National Lottery players for making Get the Marches Buzzing possible. Come and help us on a volunteer workday on one of the lowland heath sites in Telford, join us for guided mindfulness events in a local greenspace or log onto one of our webinars to learn what you can do to help pollinators.” Get the Marches Buzzing is being made possible with substantial funding from National Lottery players, via The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Additional funding has been secured through Severn Trent's Great Big Nature Boost. Severn Trent are funding the habitat restoration work in Shropshire which will contribute to their recently released Pollinator Strategy which aims to show how the organization will champion pollinators across the region, through funding projects like this and through work on their own land. Graham Osborn, Principal Ecologist at Severn Trent, said: “Our Pollinator Strategy sets out exactly why everyone, including large businesses need to champion pollinators, they are vital to a healthy ecosystem for wildlife and habitats. “We're delighted to fund what is a wonderful project that will transform such a large area of heath and grassland in our region as part of our commitment to im...

Every Season on Oven-Ready I like to devote an episode that critiques HR. Think of it as kicking the tyres, looking under the bonnet and occasionally applying the hand break when we look to be driving in the wrong direction.Neil Morrison is the Director of HR for FTSE100 water company, Severn Trent plc, where he is responsible for the HR function as well as the internal and external communications and marketing teams.Considered one of the UK's most influential HR leaders, Neil often delivers withering and scathing assessments of the professions obsession with self-serving and inward-looking debates such as working from home whilst seemingly ignoring the big issues such as maintaining employment, treating employees well and contributing to building successful organisations. Is HR fiddling whilst Rome burns? [08:20]I ask Neil if HR continues to focus on unimportant tasks whilst ignoring the big ticket items and he gives an unequivocal yes! He said HR is obsessed with how many days people are working from home and gives a withering assessment of many HR practitioners current focus. Is HR right to bemoan a lack of c-suite influence? [11:16]Neil has no sympathy for HR practitioners who moan about not being at the top table. It is HR's continued focus on process and not strategy that is often the root cause of this.Lancing the working from home boil [14:28]Working from home is largely irrelevant for vast swathes of the workforce as they are unable to perform their roles remotely. Neil believes the debate is largely centred on London and the South East of the UK and should not in his opinion be taken as the definitive answer on the future of work.Is HR too process driven? [19:26]Neil argues the starting point is to decide why the policy is needed in the first place. If it's there to help the employee understand how the business runs and how they the employee can be successful then its useful, otherwise you just end up creating constraints on people's common sense. How can HR be more loved by the organisation [21:44]Neil argues it's all about the mindset of HR and despite what the process might say, does this feel fair to the employee? HR professionals have to have empathy otherwise we fall in to the 'computer says no' mentality.Resourceshttps://change-effect.com/about/https://ovenreadyhr.com/podcast-episodes/

Severn Trent Water is the business providing drinking water and sewage treatment to our home city of Birmingham )and also large swathes of the middle, east and west of England). It sits, we think, in a uniquely interesting place in the food system.... As part of our exploration of that food system Nick Booth and Kate Cooper (of the Birmingham Food Council) meet Emily Timmins - who is Head of Waste Water Recycling. As she says it ended up quite wide ranging from "we are part of an entire, natural system" "encouraging strips and swales " to "using poo for modern medicine" "Ellie Jameson at Warwick" and even: "I like a grey drizzly day" and thought's on "Mansfield's parking spaces" Please enjoy.....

How can we use energy more efficiently? That's one of the big questions that David Gibbin is charged with delivering answers to. As Energy Flexibly Manager at Severn Trent, the water and sewage treatment company, he is delivering on the firm's ‘triple carbon pledge'. This will see the Midlands-based company achieve net-zero emissions, 100% energy from renewable sources, and a 100% electric vehicle fleet by 2030, well ahead of the Government's 2050 target. It has also become one of the first UK companies to ask shareholders to endorse its plans. The transport challenge is a big one for Severn Trent, explains David, as although its fleet isn't large, it's very varied. “This is not just a challenge for the transport department, but the whole company,” he tells Sara Sloman. And, these are no empty promises. Already, says David, Severn Trent has exceeded its target of using 50% of all its electricity from renewables by 2020. While converting the car and small van fleet to electric is straightforward, it's also seen the company move from an outright ownership model for vehicles, to leasing, and David explains why. Trickier are larger vehicles – which go up to 44-tonne tankers and refrigerated vehicles. “There's less choice at present, and we're not involved in trunking – going on motorways – as our trucks travel in rural areas.” As a result, he explains why Severn Trent is now talking with vehicle manufacturers about the types of zero-emission trucks it wants to buy, but are not currently available. “The greenest mile, is the mile you don't travel,” he adds, asking “do we actually need to do all the miles?” The result is some surprising and easy solutions (that don't involve home working) to reduce engineers' van use. Meanwhile, a programme to install 352 charging points ahead of its self-imposed deadline is now well underway, he adds into this insight in the role of utilities on the road to net-zero.
