I have always said that hairdressing is an amazing craft and that many hairdressers also have a creative side to them, which is often what draws them to this profession in the first place. But the term artist shouldn't be used to describe every hairdresser because very few are. But occasionally, you come across a hairdresser who truly is an artist. An individual who consistently shows a level of creativity that separates them from the rest.  My guest today is Angelo Seminara, who is, without doubt, an artist in the true sense of the word. In fact, I'm going to say that when it comes to hair, he is nothing short of a creative genius.  In today's podcast, we will discuss: - Creativity in hairdressing - Sustainability in product development- The importance of mentorship And lots more!  IN THIS EPISODE: [01:08] Introducing Angelo Seminara: A true hair artist[02:20] Angelo's early start in hairdressing[08:09] The journey to London and meeting Trevor Sorbie[18:32] The importance of mentorship[23:50] Defining Angelo's unique work[32:06] Exploring editorial work and product design[36:19] Defining beauty and suitability[44:37] The importance of fashion in hairdressing[46:31] Working with product companies[49:53] Awards and recognition in hairdressing[53:37] Future aspirations and creative venturesWant MORE to help you GROW?

Thanks to Charlotte Cave for hosting on this one. Along with the whole hairdressing community, we mourn the loss of Trevor Sorbie who died earlier this month. But we also remember him with a smile and a HUGE amount of respect. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Welcome to a special episode of the How To Cut It podcast. Today we are marking the sad passing of an extraordinary figure in the world of hairdressing, Trevor Sorbie MBE. Trevor Sorbie MBE, who was born in Paisley, Scotland in 1949 and rose to become one of the most influential hairdressers of all time. With unparalleled creativity and kindness, Trevor left an indelible mark on our industry. From creating iconic styles like the wedge cut to establishing the charitable foundation, My New Hair, his work transformed hairdressing into both an art and a form of heartfelt care. In this episode, we're revisiting an incredible conversation recorded back in August 2017—Trevor's first-ever podcast interview. Trevor shared with me his humble beginnings and his unwavering passion for the craft, which remained with him throughout his remarkable journey. Trevor was much more than a stylist; he was a visionary whose artistry continues to inspire us. He taught us to "be bold, be different, but always do everything in good taste." Today, we celebrate his remarkable contributions and honor his legacy. Thank you, Trevor, for everything. Trevor Sorbie MBE, 1949 - 2024. Enjoy this special episode.

Today in collaboration with Wella Professionals, I'm honoured to welcome to the podcast Charlie Taylor, three-time Scottish Hairdresser of the Year and British Hairdressing Hall of Fame icon. From her formative years with Trevor Sorbie to co-running renowned salons in Perth and Dundee with her husband Alastair, Charlie has consistently set the bar for hairdressing excellence, making her mark both nationally and internationally. Today, Charlie  introduces us to Careologist by Wella Professionals, a program dear to Charlie's heart, aimed at elevating hairdressers' grasp on hair and scalp care. This ties beautifully into our focus on Menopause, Hair, and Scalp Health, as part of recognising World Menopause Awareness Month. Charlie passionately shares her insights on addressing menopausal hair issues and the significance of understanding hair health during menopause. Charlie also shares how System Professional's range of products helps assist stylists and clients alike during this transformative phase. Before we get to all of this, I was keen to open up our conversation by learning about Charlie's voyage through the dynamics of hairdressing. She does this beautifully by emphasising with me the importance of solid foundational training and the early influences that shaped her. Charlie's competitive spirit and ambition, combined with her strategies for marrying creativity with business acumen in the salons she has built, shines through. But most of all, this episode today is about to broaden your horizon on client hair and scalp care—especially how menopause affects the hair with Charlie sharing a very clear message: "We should care deeply about the hair and scalp health of those we serve.". So get ready for a conversation with Charlie Taylor, who will share her key tips and wonderful advice.

One word sums up my guest this week - ambition! He is, right now, taking exclusive appointments at no less than seven different salons in the US and Switzerland. Hailed by the professional beauty press as a rising star from his earliest days, he now has his own shears line and is world-renowned as a pioneer of dry cutting. I am excited to sit down with this week's Headcase, Mike Karg.- from the first time he saw Trevor Sorbie on stage in London he knew he wanted exactly that- his company, Karg Shears, was the first to cut hair in a booth at trade shows- Mike talks about his dry hair cutting process and what makes it so exceptional- how does Mike Kark decompress? Ultra running. I think I'll stick to cheerleading at the finish line, thanks ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Check out more episodes and the videos at https://chrisbaran.com/podcast ⭐️ Join our FREE Facebook community for Salon Team Trainers today. https://facebook.com/groups/salonteamtraining ✅ Exclusive content on how to implement and scale your salon training the easy way ✅ Save time and learn what works from people just like you ✅ Get back to your mission of building the salon business and creating more jobs Learn more here - https://bit.ly/trainersplaybook Join our FB group - https://facebook.com/groups/salonteamtraining Follow us on IG - https://instagram.com/coachchrisbaran

Everyone was there at Sassoon's - Vidal, Trevor Sorbie, Christopher Booker, Roger Thompson• Paul Mitchell and Horst Rechelbacher both encouraged Sam, even if it was in very different ways• The title of Sam's book, Beautiful Business, refers to using both sides of the brain - creative and logical. Ann's Mum died of lung cancer when she was 18, and this spurred her on to work in nursing.Similarly Joanne has spent 35 years in cancer care and has a PHD in end of life care after a friend died of leukaemia. They were shocked to find that although they strive to give their patients the best possible care, the aftercare they received when it came to procuring a wig was severely lacking. The ladies decided to get involved in the L'Oreal My New Hair programme, along with Trevor Sorbie, to help educate hairdressers in how best to help cancer patients get a better standard of care and service. They have produced a toolkit to help patients to get a suitable wig and be able to have it fitted and customised. You can contact the charity for leaflets, resources, templates and information for fundraising and support.WebsiteInstagram Connect with Hair therapy: Facebook Instagram Twitter Clubhouse- @Hair.Therapy Donate towards the podcast Start your own podcast

Once in a while, you run into someone so different that you wonder what they know or do, that we don't.  This conversation with Alex Schlange was one of those. Having met him a few weeks ago, and observing how connected he is with his family, his work, his devotion, I had to get him into our studio. As a boy to be thrown into a class with 199 other girls, is a tidal wave. He was bullied, made fun of, and ridiculed most of his childhood.  But then, some people are wise enough to find the innate wisdom that they are born with. You will hear that it was not like he had no fears, he found ways like laughter and comedy to deflect the bullying. He went and got a black belt in martial arts to protect himself. And so much more… so he could cope! Listen to the nuggets Alex shares in his 55-year life, full of wisdom and learning! About Alex Schlange Born in Bremerhaven, Germany, Alex is a third-generation, European trained, Master Stylist. Prior to moving to Bluffton, SC from Encinitas, CA , Alex was the most sought-after stylist in Rancho Santa Fe, CA. His clients often booked him a year in advance because of incredible demand for his services. Alex has 35 years of experience in the art of hair design and color mastery. Alex's training began at the early age of 13. By age 18, Alex was the top stylist, out of 600 employees, at an inter coiffure salon in Houston, Texas. In addition to being the top stylist, Alex joined the Sam Brocato, Christopher Dove and Trevor Sorbie artistic teams and traveled around the world, setting beauty trends for England, Germany, Netherlands, and the US. Alex opened his first salon at age 23 and quickly earned the award for outstanding business achievement. Alex's artistry results in styles that enhance his clients' facial features while taking into consideration hair texture and lifestyle. Alex is passionate about golfing, painting, cooking, and connecting with nature, alongside his family. If you are a serious hairdresser, you will know the name ‘Eugene Souleiman'. If you don't know then you should. I talk to many of the biggest names in the hair industry and when it comes to the world of session work and serious creativity ‘Eugene' consistently comes up as being a creative force who always pushes the boundaries of what can be done with hair. Often we marvel at the result of the creative process, but the real magic is in what you don't see and that is in how they think. How they think about fashion, about art, about people, about creativity, about culture, about collaboration … and how they channel all of that into their work.    Eugene is that rare breed of hairdresser who really is an artist [as much as he genuinely dislikes being called that]. His work inspires other editorial stylists and salon hairdressers alike the world over, and along with a select few he is at the top of the pile.  Today's podcast is the first of a two-part series… In these two podcast episodes with Eugene we discuss: His journey into hair Transitioning from being a salon to editorial hairdresser The importance of humility and being open to new ideas How to nurture and develop creativity in others What it's really like to be one of the most in-demand session hairdressers in the world… And lots more! I think that one of the great things about this industry is that there are many different roles that you can grow into.   Most people will start off as a salon stylist, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with being a salon stylist for your entire career, as it can be very rewarding both creatively and financially. But being a salon stylist can (if you want it too) also open up other doors for you to step through.   Whether that’s becoming an educator or a session stylist or to work in film and theatre or to work in the product side of the industry, there is a lot of opportunity for those with the desire, the ambition and the courage to pursue it.   My guest on today’s podcast is Tom Connell, Hair Art Director for Davines.   In today’s podcast, we will discuss:   The importance of being relevant and connecting with hairdressers no matter where they are on their journey. Creativity and where inspiration comes from...and  Believing in yourself   In This Episode: [01:30] Tom, welcome to the show! [11:25] Tom shares his journey from a salon hairstylist to a runway educator influencing other stylists. [13:42] He speaks about why he didn’t want to do session work. [18:12] What is your creative process? What is your inspiration? [21:08] Tom says you keep pushing and pushing until something feels right. With so much down time, nows the time to absorb new information and ideas. With a wealth of digital and online education in the palm of our hands, planning daily training into your routine will see you come out of isolation a much more happier successful hairdresser. To help us with this is today's guests, Ryan Forsythe. Senior Director and Head of Education at the Trevor Sorbie Flagship Covent Garden salon, Ryan is a key member and mentor of the award winning Trevor Sorbie Artistic Team. With a natural creativity and willingness to challenge himself, Ryan says, "Giving yourself a planned structure to what you want to achieve can make you become a happy successful hairdresser". Today he's about to inspire you on ways to challenge yourself to being a happier successful hairdresser whilst in isolation. Ryan sees happy as the key component to being successful. I agree, but what makes you happy and how you define success is so different from person to person. One thing for sure though is 'learning actually makes you happier'. Researchers found that one of the things that people need to be happy is to be engaged in difficult-but-doable activities. This is an opportunity for us to become so absorbed in our learning. Learning leads to increases in self-esteem and self-efficacy. Something we all need plenty of right now. So remember, 'as we become happier, we become more successful' so don't have a fear of failures. Lets start that journey to being a happy successful hairdresser by pressing play!   A podcast produced by Hairy Media Productions.   Thanks for Listening To share your thoughts: Leave a note in the comment section below. Trevor Sorbie is known as an innovative hairdresser and is the founder of the charity, MyNewHair. Born into a family of hairdressers – both his father and grandfather were barbers – he spent the first decade of his life in Scotland before the family relocated to Essex. His first ambition was to become an artist, but when he left school aged 15 with no qualifications after being bullied, his father suggested that he could help out at his barbershop. Within three months, Trevor was cutting hair and found that he loved it. Five years down the line, however, he decided to learn about cutting women’s hair and following his training, his first job was at a Vidal Sassoon salon. He would later go on to work at both John Frieda and Toni & Guy, before launching his own salon with his business partner in 1979. He invented several iconic haircuts of the era, including the Wedge and the Chop, and he came up with the technique of scrunch drying. His innovative styles won him the British Hairdresser of the Year award four times. In 2006, he set up his charity MyNewHair to teach hairdressers how to cut and style wigs after his sister-in-law lost her hair in the course of her cancer treatment. Since then, he has trained nearly a thousand hairdressers. He was the first hairdresser to be awarded an MBE by the Queen in 2004.
