Chairman Jason Smith of the House Ways and Means Committee joins the Try That In A Small Town podcast from CMA Fest in Nashville. He breaks down what the powerful Ways and Means Committee actually does and how it touches every American's life through taxes, trade, Social Security, Medicare, and more. Jason opens up about his small-town Missouri roots, being a fourth-generation farmer, raising white buffalo, and why he still lives in the same rural community he represents. He explains how he took the Ways and Means Committee on the road to 32 states to listen to working families, small businesses, and farmers before writing what he calls the “Big Beautiful Bill” – the largest tax cut in U.S. history, including no tax on tips and overtime. The conversation gets candid on Social Security's future, election integrity and slow vote counts in places like California, and what happens when people lose trust in the system. Jason also shares behind-the-scenes stories of working closely with President Trump – from grilling him for three hours on every line of a 103-title tax bill in the Oval Office to the now-famous “red button” that just orders Diet Coke. Along the way, they talk CMA Fest, Jason's obsession with Reba, the Chiefs, Mahomes vs. Brady, cleaning up Washington, D.C., and why he believes the founding fathers' values are really small-town values. Jason closes with a powerful story of a single mom whose $10,000 tax refund changed her life – and why that's why he still fights for small towns and working families. Ana Navarro sits down with executive producer Brian Teta to take us through her whirlwind week in California, including the moments that left her starstruck. She also reacts to interviewing gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra and mayoral candidate Karen Bass, sharing what stood out to her most. Ana weighs in on new polls showing buyer's remorse among Latino Trump voters and has a blunt message for those reconsidering their support. She also sounds off on Ken Paxton defeating John Cornyn in the Texas Senate race, calling Paxton “an unethical buffoon,” and warns about a Republican Party filled with candidates in Trump's image. She wraps by explaining why she hates roasts and whether she agrees with Kevin Hart's stance that if you don't like it—you don't have to watch. Learn more about your ad choices. His Democracy Listening Tour of Red America is a qualitative research project with a simple but radical premise: before you can reform anything, you have to understand what people actually believe and why.In this conversation, Brian and Wilk dig into what “democracy” really means to everyday Americans, why that word lands so differently depending on who's hearing it, and what the reform community gets wrong by skipping the listening step altogether. One story stands out: a Trump-voting Iraq veteran and community leader in Kentucky who defined democracy as equality—then shared a workplace experience that made him feel like anything but an equal. From Pete Hegseth's erasure of Black Americans and women from military history, to Donald Trump's dismantling of DEI programs across the federal government, to Stephen Miller's openly stated goal of ethnic cleansing, Hawk connects the dots between policy and intent. The firing of hundreds of thousands of Black federal workers, the targeting of universities and corporations with DEI policies, and the Supreme Court's systematic gutting of the Voting Rights Act are all part of the same pattern. Chief Justice John Roberts, Clarence Thomas, and Samuel Alito have spent decades working to eradicate the Voting Rights Act, the landmark 1965 legislation that Hawk argues represented the first true moment the United States became a functioning representative democracy. That legacy is now being dismantled in real time. Hawk makes the case that in 2026, there is no longer any reasonable argument that a Trump voter is not fully aware of what they are supporting. Racism, misogyny, bigotry, homophobia, and transphobia were not hidden in the 2024 campaign — they were the campaign. If the shoe fits, it fits. This is Zooming In, and I'm Tom Shull, survey research director of the Institute for the Study of Modern Authoritarianism, the parent organization of The UnPopulist.American politics has always featured verbal jabs—often sharp and below the belt. But many of us can personally recall a time when American political discourse wasn't so toxic, and when citizens and politicians who didn't retain a modicum of civility and good humor in their politics risked a backlash. In fact, most Americans valued a degree of national unity, especially in times of crisis or tragedy. On September 11, 2001, after the Twin Towers fell, scores of Democratic and Republican senators and members of Congress gathered in front of the Capitol Building not to exchange Team Red and Team Blue recriminations about “national security disasters” or “immigration fiascos.” Rather, said the speaker of the House, they came together to “stand united” before the country. Spontaneously, they sang “God Bless America.”What if the 9/11 attacks happened now? You can just imagine the tweets. Is it possible to re-establish a culture of political civility in America? And if so, how would we go about it? For Jason Mangone, today's guest on Zooming In, the answer might lie in the maxim, “First seek to understand, and then to be understood”—or what might be termed “empathic listening.” Mangone is the executive director of the nonprofit organization More In Common, which has undertaken over the past eight years a sustained and sophisticated effort to understand Americans as they understand themselves, and then, with a degree of care and respect, to explain them to each other. It has done so through ambitious survey research, online panel discussions, focus groups, message testing, and other social science outreach, issuing more than 50 research reports in the process. More In Common is part of a multi-national effort to produce similar insights in a variety of countries, but today, I discuss with Jason some of More In Common's key survey findings in the United States, beginning with their recent publication Beyond MAGA: A Profile of the Trump Coalition. Thanks for checking out The UnPopulist! 62% of Trump voters say being MAGA is not an important part of their identity. So who, exactly, did we just elect? Stephen Hawkins has been trying to answer that question with data for nearly a decade. As Director of Research at More in Common since its founding in 2016, he helped author the landmark Hidden Tribes study and now leads the Beyond MAGA project, the most comprehensive look yet at the psychology of the 77 million Americans who voted for Donald Trump in 2024. In this conversation, Corey and Stephen dig into the four distinct types of Trump voters, the emergent phenomenon of "traditionalism" among Gen Z, the widening gap between MAGA hard-liners and the reluctant right, and what any of this means for a country that our guest describes as feeling "pre-hot conflict." Stephen brings the rigor of a public opinion researcher and the perspective of someone who has lived, worked, and changed his mind on both sides of America's ideological divide. This is not a conversation about demonizing Trump voters or excusing them. It is about understanding them, and about what that understanding demands of the rest of us. Calls to Action ✅ If this conversation resonates, consider sharing it with someone who believes connection across difference still matters. ✅ Subscribe to Corey's Substack: coreysnathan.substack.com ✅ Leave a review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen: ratethispodcast.com/goodfaithpolitics ✅ Subscribe to Talkin' Politics & Religion Without Killin' Each Other on your favorite podcast platform. ✅ Watch the full conversation and subscribe on YouTube: youtube.com/@politicsandreligion Key Takeaways Coalition, Not Cult. The Beyond MAGA study surveyed nearly 11,000 Trump voters and found four distinct segments: MAGA Hard-liners (29%), Anti-Woke Conservatives (21%), Mainline Republicans (30%), and the Reluctant Right (20%). Three out of five Trump voters say being MAGA is not a central part of their identity. The Exhausted Majority Under Pressure. Stephen expects Hidden Tribes 2.0 to show the wings have grown, not shrunk. The exhausted majority may be moving from exhaustion toward something closer to despair. New Traditionalism and the Logic of Transgression. Among younger Trump voters, traditional or religious identity functions as a form of rebellion in a secular culture. For some Gen Z voters, Christianity is more countercultural than secularism. Supporting Trump taps the same energy as defying the teacher everyone dislikes. The Respect Gap. 84% of Trump voters feel respected by Trump. Only 21% feel respected by Democratic politicians. That 63-point gap is why even reluctant Trump voters are unlikely to migrate to the other party, regardless of policy grievances. No Inflection Points. The Epstein files, Greenland threats, Medicare subsidy rollbacks, military actions in Venezuela and Iran: none of them meaningfully moved Trump voter support. Reconsideration is happening among those who were already hesitant, not among convinced supporters. Stories, Values, Listen. Corey and Stephen both land on the same framework for better cross-divide conversation: surface the other person's story, understand their underlying value system (not just their policy positions), and listen with genuine curiosity rather than loading up your rebuttal. The Case for Clarity. More in Common is nonpartisan and does not have electoral ambitions, but Stephen does not mince words: the country feels pre-hot-conflict, and what it needs is not more outrage but more precision about who is actually out there and what they believe. About Our Guest Stephen Hawkins is Director of Research at More in Common, a nonpartisan organization working to understand and address the forces driving political division in nine countries. He has overseen the organization's research since its founding in 2016, including the landmark 2018 Hidden Tribes study and the 2026 Beyond MAGA project. Prior to More in Common, Stephen conducted public opinion research for Fortune 100 companies, United Nations agencies, electoral campaigns, and political movements. He has appeared on C-SPAN's Washington Journal and regularly on Colorado Matters. For many people, Trump represents a uniquely dangerous figure in American history. But what if the contemptuous, maximally pessimistic ways many people talk about Trump and Republicans help put more "wind in the sails" of polarized, polarizing leaders like Trump? Are we in a self-reinforcing feedback loop of contempt and anger? In this talk for Richard Davies' series How Do We Fix it? (www.howdowefixit.me) Zachary Elwood argues that excessive contempt for each other is the problem underlying all other political discord and democracy-erosion problems. He and Richard discuss how liberal contempt for conservatives can create a feedback loop that empowers highly antagonistic and us-vs-them leaders, why our worst-case caricatures of the other side are so tempting and yet so wrong, and why changing how we talk about the "other side" can make us more persuasive and effective, not weaker. Is Trump losing the very people who put him in power - and what does that mean for the rest of us? If Trump was supposed to be the wrecking ball to the swamp, why are his approval numbers tanking while people are getting poorer, angrier, and more blackpilled about politics? Why are Walmart and TJ Maxx booming while your grocery bill feels like a second car payment? Why did Team Trump hype the Epstein files... then suddenly slam on the brakes? And why does it feel like no matter who wins, the same people behind the curtain still call the shots? Studio Sponsor: Cardio Miracle - "Unlock the secret to a healthier heart, increased energy levels, and transform your cardiovascular fitness like never before.": CardioMiracle.com/TBNS In this episode, Connor Vasile and I dig into the new polling that shows Trump sliding hard with voters who once saw him as the economic bodyguard against Biden style insanity. We get into why cost of living is crushing normal people, why the “inflation is slowing” talking points feel like gaslighting, and how big box “value” stores quietly tell the real story of a stressed out middle class. If you feel poorer than the headlines say you should, this one is going to hit home. From there, we walk straight into the Epstein landmine - why Thomas Massie forced the vote, what the Trump world flip flop on releasing the files really signals, and why people are done accepting “national security” and “ongoing investigation” as magic words to hide the truth. We talk foreign influence, Mossad rumors, blackmail, and why the average American has every reason not to trust the people holding the redaction pen. We also pull the lens back and ask the uncomfortable question almost nobody on the right wants to ask out loud - is Trump actually running a 90s Democrat playbook while selling it as America First? We talk covid spending, H1B visas, cheap imported labor, and why both parties keep feeding the same corporate machine while Republican and Democrat voters scream from opposite corners of the same cage. Finally, we zoom out to the bigger war behind all this: red team vs blue team tribalism, why libertarians keep getting boxed out, and what a real liberty strategy looks like in a world of communists winning big city races and “Christian nationalist” energy rising on the right. We talk Thomas Massie, Tea Party lessons, third parties vs takeover, and how a new coalition could actually change things from the bottom up if we stop playing make believe with polite old school politics. The results in today's elections will hinge on one major factor: Whether thousands of people who voted Trump last November will bother coming out this time when he's not on the ballot. Is that going to happen, though? Rich Baris talks about the layout of the "Trump realignment," and Jim Jordan joins as well. Watch every episode ad-free on members.charliekirk.com! John Della Volpe, Polling Director at the Harvard Kennedy School, joins Joanna Coles to break down the dramatic shift in young male voters, once Trump's strongest base. From Charlie Kirk's legacy to the collapse of Trump's net favorable rating among young men, Della Volpe explains how inflation, chaos, and the unmet promise to release the Epstein files are reshaping politics. They also weigh in on Turning Point USA's new leadership, the rise of faith communities, and the anti-establishment mood driving 2026 and 2028. Can Democrats turn this disillusionment into an advantage, and is Trump's hold on young men slipping for good? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
On Thursday, JD Vance delivered a speech designed to reset the political battle over President Trump's abysmally unpopular budget bill. But Vance's speech devolved into a series of rants that seemed to ape Trump's style. Vance lied about the bill's health care cuts and dissembled wildly about its expected impact on rural hospitals—both times smearing undocumented immigrants with vile Trumpian dishonesty. He also baselessly attacked a nonpartisan agency whose analysis displeased him. All this comes as news outlets in many states are showing that people deep in MAGA country know they're set to get royally screwed. Vance's scamming of Trump voters here was extraordinary. But Democrats have work to do. We talked to Michael Linden, an economist and Democratic strategist organizing against the bill. He dissects Vance's lies about it, explains how badly it will shaft Trump voters and the working class, and discusses how Democrats can keep the focus on it through Election Day 2026. Let's talk about what Trump voters voted for....
The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 3: 5:00pm- While speaking with Kaitlan Collins on CNN, Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett baselessly accused Donald Trump supporters of being “low IQ.” 5:10pm- In response to Texas's redistricting attempt, Governor Gavin Newsom has pledged to redistrict California—presumably removing several Republican congressional seats. Interestingly, Republicans currently hold just 17% of the congressional seats in CA—despite nearly 40% of the state voting for Donald Trump in 2024. Doesn't that suggest the state is already heavily gerrymandered? Comparatively, Democrats currently hold 32% of the House seats in Texas (with one vacant seat in a district that is reliably blue—so, the real number is closer to 34%). Kamala Harris won 42% of the Texas statewide vote in 2024. 5:30pm- From the White House on Tuesday, President Donald Trump—alongside Apple CEO Tim Cook, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick—announced that Apple will invest an additional $100 billion in domestic manufacturing, assuring that more of the company's supply chain will be based in the United States. Cook and Apple now plan to invest a total of $600 billion in U.S. manufacturing.
