Glen Campbell [09:23] "Southern Nights" Southern Nights Capitol SO-11601 1977 Glen takes an excellent turn with Allen Toussaint's "Southern Nights" (https://youtu.be/mCscZ2tPFmI?si=0lfs02BFzVpS3aIf) originally recorded in 1975. Glen heard that version and was reminded of his childhood in Arkansas. This single made it to number 1 on the charts, and the album made it as high as 22 on the Billboard 200. Hawkwind [12:24] "Sonic Attack" Space Ritual United Artists Records UA-LA120-H2 1973 Epically epic space jams with interspersed spoken words as exampled here with "Sonic Attack" written by Michael Moorcock and recited by James Calvert. The sleeve art by Barney Bubbles is a thing of majesty. If space jams are your thing and you've never heard this album, seek it out. Amazingly, this album briefly dented the Billboard 200, making it to number 179. The album jacket is quite a work of art. Depeche Mode [17:24] "Dreaming of Me" Speak & Spell Sire SRK 3642 1981 What a difference a decade makes (as compared to Hawkwind)? The debut album by the boys from Basildon, and the only one recorded with Vince Clark (before he moved on to Yaz and subsequently Erasure). This album also just cracked the Billboard 200 here in the US, making it to number 192. This single did actually make it into the US Billboard dance charts, going as high as 47. The album attempts to explore English suburbia. The album cover features some great typography by Gerard Huerta. Amazing Rhythm Aces [49:48] "Third Rate Romance" Stacked Deck ABC Records ABCD-913 1975 Some fun country-inflected rock from these Memphis gents, sounding almost perfectly mid-70s in a good way. The album reached 11 on the country charts and 120 on the Billboard 200. This single also hit 11 on the country charts and 14 on the pop chart. The band even made an appearance on the second season of Austic City Limits (https://youtu.be/pLz6nIvqB2c?si=nFcMK2tAEEfFjI8n). Love Barry "Byrd" Burton's finger pickin on this. Epic BN 26456 1969 The mighty Sly Stone and family take a funky turn at this song originally recorded by Gene Allison (https://youtu.be/xiPI7d1y2Co?si=bo1XG2515eGJoYnn) and also covered by the Rolling Stones (https://youtu.be/jz4VO_NiY24?si=1OhUnqa0lAa5JEwM). Fans of Primal Scream will also recognize the tail end of the track that precedes this album closer. In honor of the late Tito Jackson, I had to go with this uptempo Jacksons single from 1978. While 8 year old me would have been extremely excited about the "Theme from S.W.A.T.", I decided to go with Mobile AL's own Wet Willie. James Taylor fue educado en una buena familia de Nueva Inglaterra. Su medio quiso hacer de él, "Una máquina para hacer dinero" (Money Machine 1970). Philadelphia-based art-rock duo Tulipomania has teamed up with the legendary Martyn Ware and Charles Stooke on a new remix, along with an intriguing animated music video, featuring lip sync, original footage and vintage found footage – some vibrantly tinted in pastel – all collaged on sheets of black paper, shot frame by frame. Martyn Ware of Heaven 17 and The Human League fame is otherwise renowned for lifetime achievements in innovative musicianship, including as a record producer for artists such as Tina Turner, Terence Trent D'Arby, Chaka Khan, Erasure and Marc Almond. On this remix, Ware is joined by Charles Stooke, co-composer for the Illustrious Company, which Ware founded with Vince Clark in 2001. Hij zal sterven in het huis waar hij tot rust kon komen van zijn drukke leven. Als kind was hij actief bij de lokaale scoutsbeweging en leefde hij een onbezonnen leven. Al snel werd hij bevriend met Martin Gore en Vince Clark. Met hen zou hij samen de punkscene proberen te veroveren met hun poging tot punkmuziek. Het zal pas met de komst van Dave Gahan zijn dat ze muzikale successen gaan boeken Met de band depeche mode zullen ze zowel het alternatieve publiek als het grote publiek veroveren en stadions vullen met hun unieke sound. Speech-Language Pathologists often express that opportunities available to other therapy disciplines or other medical professionals appear to be closed off to them. Their reasoning is that the perception of what speech-language pathologists do and the nature of our training impedes our ability to advance. In this week's podcast, my guest Vince Clark and I will continue to explore this perception. We designed a survey in 2021 that was accepted as an ASHA Convention presentation. Unfortunately, due to complications from Covid, we were unable to present it at that time. The survey was designed to determine why SLPs feel that leadership and career advancement eludes them. We will use this tool to determine patterns that may enlighten the profession as we seek to train our future leaders. This is preliminary raw data, but eventually, we hope to shape this into a useful tool in the future. Our goal is to begin work that will empower SLPs. Haven't left a review yet? Luego de la gran revolución que fue el movimiento Punk y el “hazlo tú mismo” cientos de jóvenes cogieron por primera vez una guitarra, un bajo, un micrófono o un sintetizador, y así surgieron varios movimientos como el Post-Punk, la New Wave y el SynthPop, entro varios más. El SynthPop nació a finales de los 70s y básicamente se remonta al desarrollo de los sintetizadores que cada vez eran más populares, portátiles y asequibles. Es una mezcla de Pop y música electrónica, con influencias del Klaust Rock, Glam Rock y la música Disco. Entro los primeros grupos en surgir podemos encontrar a The Human League (con una formación diferente en sus comienzos), Ultravox (quienes venían de la escena del Post-Punk y el Glam), Tubeway Army (en donde se encontraba Gary Numan), Japan (aunque son bastante difíciles de encasillar en un género) entre varios más. Kraftwerk publica dos álbumes fundamentales para el género, The Man Machine (‘78) y Computer World ('81). A principios de los 80s surgían Orchestral Manouvres in the Dark, Soft Cell, Visage, Gary Numan comienza su exitosa carrera solista, y varias bandas más combinando las melodías del Pop con sonidos electrónicos generados por sintetizadores, cajas de ritmo, baterías electrónicas y sequencers. El synthpop se masifica y comienzan a aparecer mas grupos, Eurythmics (anteriormente era un grupo New Wave llamado The Tourist), New Order (de las cenizas de Joy Division), Depeche Mode, Yazoo, Heaven 17 y un largo etc. Su reinado fue hasta mas o menos 1984-1985 cuando comienza su caída (casualmente en 1984 sale el primer disco de The Smiths), muchos grupos se separan, otros cambian de estilo, Depeche mode por ejemplo que endureció su sonido, experimentando y acercándose a los sonidos electrónicos que se producían en Alemania. Vince Clark luego de dejar Depeche Mode y Yazoo forma junto a Andy Bell Erasure en el año '85 con un sonido electrónico mucho más pop, los Pet Shop Boys surgen con su mezcla de synthPop, Hi-NRG y Pop, a-ha se consagra en todo el mundo con el single “Take on Me”. El resto de década se completa con la llegada del House, el cual es acogido por varios artistas de la escena electrónica británica, el resurgimiento del Rock en las listas de ventas y la factoría “Stock Aitken & Waterman” que publicaban singles como rosquillas. En medio de todo este panorama el synthpop se desaparece poco a poco del mercado. Pero ha dejado una gran influencia que al día de hoy seguimos escuchando en las radios. Luego de la gran revolución que fue el movimiento Punk y el “hazlo tú mismo” cientos de jóvenes cogieron por primera vez una guitarra, un bajo, un micrófono o un sintetizador, y así surgieron varios movimientos como el Post-Punk, la New Wave y el SynthPop, entro varios más. El SynthPop nació a finales de los 70s y básicamente se remonta al desarrollo de los sintetizadores que cada vez eran más populares, portátiles y asequibles. Es una mezcla de Pop y música electrónica, con influencias del Klaust Rock, Glam Rock y la música Disco. Entro los primeros grupos en surgir podemos encontrar a The Human League (con una formación diferente en sus comienzos), Ultravox (quienes venían de la escena del Post-Punk y el Glam), Tubeway Army (en donde se encontraba Gary Numan), Japan (aunque son bastante difíciles de encasillar en un género) entre varios más. Kraftwerk publica dos álbumes fundamentales para el género, The Man Machine (‘78) y Computer World (’81). A principios de los 80s surgían Orchestral Manouvres in the Dark, Soft Cell, Visage, Gary Numan comienza su exitosa carrera solista, y varias bandas más combinando las melodías del Pop con sonidos electrónicos generados por sintetizadores, cajas de ritmo, baterías electrónicas y sequencers. La línea divisoria entre el New Wave, el SynthPop y el New Romantic es casi invisible y varias bandas las han cruzado en muchas ocasiones (Talk Talk, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Visage, A Flock of Seagulls, etc). Intensísima terapia musical desde el Hospital Neptuno de esta semana. La dosis de música de calidad en vena de esta semana es muy intensa y muy extensa. Hoy girará mucho en torno al bombazo del retorno de David Bowie La semana ha estado marcada sin duda alguna por una de las noticias musicales más importantes de los últimos años, el retorno del gran Duque Blanco, el retorno de David Bowie que nos ha dejado a todos con los pantalones bajados con lo cual abrimos el programa con su resurrección musical. Han habido muchísimas novedades que también hemos querido destacar, como es la nueva revelación del pop inglés que es Tom Odell, escuchamos lo nuevo del curiosísimo proyecto comandado por Andrés Costurera que es Pshycotic Beats, el adelanto al que será el quinto disco de Alice in Chains o el interesante single de Sky Ferreira entre otras muchas novedades, que no son pocas las que hemos escuchado esta semana, más de dos horas y media de programa da para mucho. Esta semana hemos tenido a nuestros 3 colaboradores habituales, Pedro Marín al frente de su despacho del Hombre Mecánico que nos trae un vanguardista paciente francés a parte de que nos muestra su visión de la vuelta de David Bowie, de quién también hablamos en La Habitación del Pánico junto a Sergio Martín donde entramos en dos ocasiones, la primera para proponernos una excelente y curiosa versión de uno de los grandes clásicos de Bowie y al cerrar el programa para hablar del especial Martes y 2013 que emitió en nochevieja TVE y del cual nos ha elegido un One Hit Wonder de la música disco de los 70 que tuvo gran éxito en España y por supuesto recibimos como cada semana la píldora de Flash Neptuno de la mano de Andrés Calvo que esta semana nos manda a Vince Clark, uno de los fundadores de Depeche Mode en una transición entre Yazoo y Erasure.
