The Bee Gees had a string of hits in the 60s and 70s. Maurice Gibb was one of the members of the brother group, the Bee Gees, one of the most successful pop groups of all-time.   Maurice's career started at the age of six in a skiffle rock and roll group named the “Rattlesnakes,” which later became the Bee Gees. His early musical influences included the Beatles, Everly Brothers, the Mills Brothers and Paul Anka. Maurice was the fraternal twin of Robin Gibb. On Dec. 28 1957, the brothers were invited to perform at a local movie theater. They planned to sing along to a 78 rpm record, but they dropped and broke the record so they had to sing live. They sang “Wake Up Little Susie” by the Everly Brothers. The audience thought they were great and they were on their way to stardom.

On va faire un tour dans un disque Live culte : Paul Simon et Art Garfunkel, à Central Park, en 1981. Ils n'avaient pas rechanté ensemble depuis 11 ans. Plus d'un demi-million de personnes étaient venues les applaudir, lors de ce concert gratuit. Le disque (un des Live les plus vendus au monde) est sorti le 16 février 1982, il y a donc 40 ans. Tout est parfait dans ce disque, de la première à la dernière note, le groove est dingue. On retrouve les titres incontournables, une reprise du Maybellene de Chuck Berry, et un hommage à leur modèle : le duo des frères Everly, les Everly Brothers. By the time the Everly Brothers signed with Cadence Records in March 1957 (a deal midwifed by music publisher Wesley Rose of Acuff-Rose), they were singing teenage playlets crafted by songwriters Boudleaux and Felice Bryant overlaid with R&B rhythm patterns. They scored a string of hits, including “Bye, Bye Love,” “Wake Up, Little Susie,” “All I Have to Do Is Dream,” “Bird Dog,” and others. They became Grand Ole Opry members on June 1, 1957. In a sense, though, Don and Phil Everly were more important to Nashville. They were the first consistently successful rock & roll act to come from there. Their management and their songs came from Nashville, and they recorded there with local session musicians. In other words, they extended Nashville's sense of what was commercially possible. While many bands of the 80's were focusing on the synth-heavy New Wave or screaming guitars of Hard Rock, one band was taking their inspiration from the 50's roots of Rock.  The Stray Cats came out of New York  in 1979 and developed a devoted following quickly, but moved to the UK after hearing of a revival of the 50's subculture there.  Inspired by the Sun Records artists of the 50's, the Stray Cats combined Rockabilly and Punk genres to form their sound.The Stray Cats were a trio with Brian Setzer on guitar and lead vocals, Lee Rocker on double bass, and Slim Jim Phantom on drums.  They continued to tour and record in the UK, and released two albums there in 1981 before turning their interest back to the States.  Their debut American album, Built for Speed, was comprised of songs selected from their first two albums released in England, plus the previously unreleased title track.The group benefitted from having both a unique sound and air play on the then-new MTV.  Unlike most music of the time, songs were short and tight, without synthesizers or more modern sensibilities.  Also, unlike the music of the time, everything was stripped down to the bare essence in this group.  Phantom's drum set consisted of just a few pieces, worlds away from the massive sets fielded by prog rock groups like Asia and Rush.  Brian Setzer wrote most of the songs, and had the distinctive look that would become associated with the group. Unfortunately, Setzer also tired of the group quickly, and the Stray Cats broke up in 1984.  Setzer would go on to be the concert guitarist for the Honeydrippers (with Robert Plant as front man).  The group would reunite frequently over the years, and each member continued to tour either with their own bands or in support of other musicians.The group continues to tour off and on today, and released a new album in 2021. Built for SpeedThis is the title track and the only song on the album previously unreleased.  It is about cars, and hot rodding on the road.  “Well I'm cruising low and I'm cruising mean, well I'm cruising slow in my dream machine.  You're my hot rod mama and you're really built for speed.”Rock This TownAn easily recognizable hit, “Rock This Town” cracked the top 10.  This song was the introduction to Rockabilly to many people.  It is about hitting the clubs at night, dancing the night away.  The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame lists this song as one of the 500 songs that shaped rock and roll.  “We're gonna rock this town, rock it inside out.”  Baby Blue EyesA deeper cut from the album, this tells the struggle of a guy in love with a pretty girl he just doesn't trust.  While in England, the Stray Cats attracted the attention of many famous artists including members of the Rolling Stones, the Who, and Led Zeppelin.Stray Cat StrutThis track is the most famous of the Stray Cat's tunes, and received significant airplay on both radio and MTV.  It reached number 3 on the charts.  “I'm flat broke but I don't care.  I strut right by with my tail in the air.”  Setzer's songs are original but carry the sound of a 50's cover. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Flying Theme from the motion picture “E.T. the Extraterrestrial”The film that made Steven Spielberg a household name was released this month. STAFF PICKS:Space Age Love Song by A Flock of SeagullsRob's staff pick peaked at number 30 on the Billboard charts.  This New Wave group is out of Liverpool.  When they couldn't come up with a name for the track, guitarist Paul Reynolds suggested the name because he thought it sounded like a space age love song.  Mike Score's well-known hairdo was the result of a mistake after his hair was accidentally pushed down in the center before going onstage.Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go? by Soft CellBruce features the first hit from vocalist Marc Almond and instrumentalist David Ball, better known as Soft Cell.  Tainted Love was originally recorded as a B-side in 1964 by Gloria Jones, but it didn't chart.  Almond heard it when working in a cloakroom, and the duo started performing it with synthesizers instead of guitars.  It was a big hit in the U.S. as part of the Second British Invasion.  The extended dance version combined Tainted Love with the Supremes' hit “Where Did Our Love Go?”Wake Up Little Susie by Simon and GarfunkelBrian's staff pick hearkens back to the early days of rock with a cover of the Everly Brothers song recorded at Simon and Garfunkel's live concert from Central Park.  The song did well and was part of the inspiration for Simon and Garfunkel's tour in 1983.I Want Candy by Bow Wow WowWayne's staff pick features a cover originally performed in 1965.  Bow Wow Wow's version had both a rockabilly and punk feel to it.  The lead singer was underage at the time, and the risque pictures on the album created considerable controversy. COMEDY TRACK:She Got the Goldmine (I Got the Shaft) by Jerry ReedJerry Reed's cautionary tale reminds us that it is better to learn how to cook than to marry for food as we close out the podcast.

It’s considered the first rock & roll Christmas song, but exactly who is responsible for that is a question that still doesn’t have a definitive answer! Here are things you didn't know about Jingle Bell Rock. By 1957, the rock & roll sound was about to hit Christmas music…even if no one actually intended for that to happen. Jingle Bell Rock was first recorded by country singer Bobby Helms. He is not recognized as the song’s author, but he and guitarist Hank “Sugarfoot” Garland would both claim right up until their deaths that they co-wrote it. You might not know the name Hank Garland, but you’ve heard him play. Jingle Bell Rock, Wake Up Little Susie, Pretty Woman -that’s Hank Garland. The official songwriters of record are Joseph Beale and James Boothe. Both worked in the newspaper business, but would also pitch song ideas to Hollywood producers. Helms and Garland always maintained that the song Beal and Booth wrote was called Jingle Bell Hop and was just awful. The last line of the first verse “now the jingle hop has begun” is a line that likely remained, but much of what was recorded was not on the original page. Helms passed in 1997, but he told the Indianapolis Star in ’92 that Jingle Bell Hop was so bad that he didn’t want to record it until after he and Garland rewrote existing lyrics, reworked the melody, upping the tempo and the bridge. "What a bright time, it's the right time, to rock the night away”…they say they wrote that from scratch. Paperwork likely played a huge role how things unfolded from there. Session players would often come up with things on the fly and not take notes, so there’s no paper trail tracing the changes they made to the song…but plenty of people have come forward saying they witnessed Helms and Garland working their magic. Hank passed in 2004, but his younger brother, Billy has taken up his cause. It’s estimated that as much as $100 million in royalties were never paid to Bobby Helms and Hank Garland. Jingle Bell Rock was released on November 28, 1957, debuting at #6 on the charts for that week and has been a Christmas favourite ever since. Thanks for joining us! Happy Winter Solstice!                 and of course Merry Christmas..........   While this is the last Deadpod before the holiday, I will naturally include some great acoustic Dead music for your enjoyment. However since it is also a few days before the holiday, I thought I would break with tradition a bit and include some electric Dead as well. The show I selected for this week really dictated this choice, its a fine show that was performed back on April 3rd, 1970 at the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati Ohio. I bring you part one this week. Good luck next week!! Black-Eyed News: In a year of declining album sales, Justin Timberlake's The 20/20 Experience was the biggest selling album of 2013, according to Billboard. A total of 2.43 million copies sold. While the ranking is certainly an honor for Timberlake, it's less flattering for the record industry as a whole: The 20/20 Experience was the only album to sell over 2 million in 2013, which marks the lowest top-seller in SoundScan's 22 years of tracking sales. The previous low came in 2008, with Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III selling 2.87 million copies. Rounding out the top 10 was Eminem's acclaimed The Marshall Mathers LP 2 (1.73 million), Luke Bryan's Crash My Party (1.52 million), Imagine Dragons' Night Visions (1.4 million), Bruno Mars' Unorthodox Jukebox (just under 1.4 million), Florida Georgia Line's Here's to the Good Times (1.35 million), Drake's Nothing Was the Same (1.34 million), Beyoncé's surprise LP Beyoncé (1.3 million), Blake Shelton's Based on a True Story (1.11 million) and Jay Z's app-backed Magna Carta...Holy Grail (1.1 million). What do we think this means to the future of album sales? Total sold in top 10 14.67 Million average of 1.46 million per but 7 of those albums were not even close to that number. Editorial Aside: What is to blame for the low sales? Piracy claims the record company; the artists say streaming is the villain here. But how about the cost of an album at the store. Not a digital copy but a hard copy. I have seen them for as much as $18 in the store. Also quality some of the stuff is just not that good. Back to the Numbers: The top single sales were led by a different set of artists. Robin Thicke's ubiquitous "Blurred Lines" came in at Number One with 6.5 million sales. Mackemore and Ryan Lewis' "Thrift Shop" was a close second, with 6.15 million. He was 74. The group’s official website said he died in a hospital near his home in Southern California. His son Jason said the cause of death was complications of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. With songs like “Wake Up Little Susie,” “Bye Bye Love,” “Cathy’s Clown,” “All I Have to Do Is Dream” and “When Will I Be Loved?,” which was written by Phil Everly, the brothers were consistent hitmakers in the late 1950s and early 1960s. They won over country, pop and even R&B listeners with a combination of clean-cut vocals and the rockabilly strum and twang of their guitars. They were also models for the next generations of rock vocal harmonies for the Beatles, Linda Ronstadt, Simon and Garfunkel and many others who recorded their songs and tried to emulate their precise, ringing vocal alchemy. He was 84 and just four days shy of his birthday. Born Ernest J. Thomas in Baton Rouge January 5th, 1929, Thomas owned and operated a blues club called Tabby’s Blues Box and Heritage Hall for nearly three decades until it’s closure in 2004. “There was something about Tabby’s Blues Box,” wrote Chelsea Brasted for the New Orleans Times Picayune, “An intangible quality seeped out of the joint on nights when legends were being made on its stage, solidifying its place in local music lore.” Thomas has long been one of the best known blues musicians in Baton Rouge. Having learned music in a local church Choir as a child, and following an Air Force stint, Tabby relocated to California and began a touring and recording career, notably with Hollywood Records and the well-known Excello Records label. Returning to Louisiana, Tabby’s records were quickly played on local radio on New Orleans’ WBOK. His music earned him a spot at New Orleans’ famed Dew Drop Inn venue — a premiere live blues room that was host to Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Guitar Slim and dozens more top acts of the time. He caught the attention of Louis Armstrong, who arranged for the Eric Shaw Agency to book Thomas a tour. Tabby’s son, Grammy award winner Chris Thomas King, found his first experiences at the club that he helped his father create. He signed his first recording contract with Sire Records, a subsidiary of Warner Brothers, at Tabby’s Heritage Hall. King went on to sell more than ten million records, earning a Grammy for Album of the Year for his cover of Skip James’ “Hard Time Killing Floor Blues” track on the O! Brother Where Art Thou? soundtrack. Fans of the band immediately began protesting and about the shake-up. “We’re here to assure you that that is not true,” said Oteil, refuting the claim on Social Media, “and he will be playing with the Allman Brothers throughout 2014. Happy New Year and thank you to all the fans for your support!” Oteil also had this to say on his website: “For the record…. It was an amazing experience recording and playing with the Zac Brown Band and with Dave Grohl in November. It was an awesome time and a reunion of sorts for me with old friends Chris Fryar, Penn Robertson, and Eric Pretto (the drummer, bass tech and guitar tech for ZBB, respectively) who I’ve known for over a decade. I am proud to be part Zac’s record. 2014 will mark the beginning of my 16th year with the Allman Brothers and as we celebrate the bands 45th anniversary, it reminds me what a huge part of my musical life this incredible band has been. I’m really grateful and proud to be such a big part of the ABB history. And we ain’t done yet! I certainly hope to work with the Zac Brown Band again in the future. They are incredibly talented and great guys. In a recent chat with fans on the message board of his label, Third Man Records, White dropped the news: "I'm producing two albums this month, and finishing them," he said. "One of them is mine." Assuming White is referring to a solo album, this could mean a follow-up to 2012's Blunderbuss will be appearing shortly. In an interview with Rolling Stone last February, White mentioned that he had 20 to 25 songs already written. "It's definitely not one sound," he said of the new material. "It's definitely several. Like you heard in Blunderbuss, there's many different styles there. I don't pick my style and then write a song.
