UnHerd's Florence Read interviews outspoken pronatalists, Malcolm and Simone Collins, to dive into the urgent issue of population collapse. Is pronatalism the answer to demographic catastrophe, or does it skirt too close to eugenics and far-Right ideologies? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Malcolm and Simone Collins hope to have 10 children to help avoid what they see as a pending demographic collapse. They tell Lucy Hockings that as pronatalists they want to promote the dangers of falling fertility rates and encourage other people to have more children.
Malcolm and Simone Collins hope to have 10 children to help avoid what they see as a pending demographic collapse. They tell Lucy Hockings that as pronatalists they want to promote the dangers of falling fertility rates and encourage other people to have more children.Whereas many people might see their lifestyle as extreme, pronatalism seems to be gaining support at the heart of the Trump administration. But some people worry that some pronatalist practices cross the line into eugenics and that the far right are also adopting the ideology. Malcolm and Simone Collins host the podcast called “Based Camp” and are the founders of “The Pragmatist Institute.” Together, they have published multiple books, such as “The Pragmatist's Guide to Crafting Religion” (Being the only one I read). Simone & Malcolm Collins consider themselves to be part of “The New Right” - a pro-tech progressive conservative movement that is anti-racist, pluralistic, tolerant of sexuality, yet pro-religion and quite socially conservative for today's standards. So, full disclosure: even though Malcolm & Simone Collins are quite unconventional conservatives, they still see themselves as part of the Right and are trying to reform the Republican party. In this episode, after getting Simone & Malcolm Collins to clarify their political positions, I try to challenge views on Capitalism, Socialism, and contemporary American politics in general. In The Backroom on Patreon, I challenge Malcolm Collins's views on the modern Conservative movement and his belief that the Republican Party is the lesser evil. Pro-natalism advocates Malcolm and Simone Collins are here to lead us into the Handmaiden's Tale (or guide us away from it, depending on your view)! In Part One of this very long interview, the bespectacled iconoclasts share their thoughts on how modern society stacks the deck against fertility, especially those seeking to represent the U.S. in the fecundity Olympics (Malcolm and Simone are the parents of four children and hope to have nine more). They also assess the damage caused by the "trad wife" image, explain their views on spanking, caution against the progressive plot to Come For Your Kids, and expound on abortion. (You might be surprised!)In the upcoming Part Two (available NOW to paying members here), the Collinses discuss why autists are over-represented in the pro-natalism movement and recount their own love story and evolution into "techno-puritans." Finally, they answer the definitive parenting question: Is the harm of screen time overblown?Subscribe to get the full interview NOW, plus all our bonus episodes and access to the comment community!Links* Malcolm and Simone's YT Channel Based Camp, Twitter, and Pronatalist Organization! * Article in the Gaurdian (featuring That Slap). Claire Kilroy's novel details a young mother's fatigue, frustrations, and joys at raising a trying infant who becomes a willful toddler. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Alan Minskoff discuss this dramatic monologue on motherhood and marriage, narrated with an intimate and persuasive tone and lovely Irish lilt by Simone Collins. Her performance resonates as her tone, pace, and intonation reveal the struggling mom's love. This brief, powerful depiction of motherhood rings true and creates an immersive listening experience. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Why so many "racists" at Manifest?, published by Austin on June 18, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Manifest 2024 is a festival that we organized last weekend in Berkeley. By most accounts, it was a great success. On our feedback form, the average response to "would you recommend to a friend" was a 9.0/10. Reviewers said nice things like "one of the best weekends of my life" and "dinners and meetings and conversations with people building local cultures so achingly beautiful they feel almost like dreams" and "I've always found tribalism mysterious, but perhaps that was just because I hadn't yet found my tribe." Arnold Brooks running a session on Aristotle's Metaphysics. More photos of Manifest here. However, a recent post on The Guardian and review on the EA Forum highlight an uncomfortable fact: we invited a handful of controversial speakers to Manifest, whom these authors call out as "racist". Why did we invite these folks? First: our sessions and guests were mostly not controversial - despite what you may have heard Here's the schedule for Manifest on Saturday: (The largest & most prominent talks are on the left. Full schedule here.) And here's the full list of the 57 speakers we featured on our website: Nate Silver, Luana Lopes Lara, Robin Hanson, Scott Alexander, Niraek Jain-sharma, Byrne Hobart, Aella, Dwarkesh Patel, Patrick McKenzie, Chris Best, Ben Mann, Eliezer Yudkowsky, Cate Hall, Paul Gu, John Phillips, Allison Duettmann, Dan Schwarz, Alex Gajewski, Katja Grace, Kelsey Piper, Steve Hsu, Agnes Callard, Joe Carlsmith, Daniel Reeves, Misha Glouberman, Ajeya Cotra, Clara Collier, Samo Burja, Stephen Grugett, James Grugett, Javier Prieto, Simone Collins, Malcolm Collins, Jay Baxter, Tracing Woodgrains, Razib Khan, Max Tabarrok, Brian Chau, Gene Smith, Gavriel Kleinwaks, Niko McCarty, Xander Balwit, Jeremiah Johnson, Ozzie Gooen, Danny Halawi, Regan Arntz-Gray, Sarah Constantin, Frank Lantz, Will Jarvis, Stuart Buck, Jonathan Anomaly, Evan Miyazono, Rob Miles, Richard Hanania, Nate Soares, Holly Elmore, Josh Morrison. Judge for yourself; I hope this gives a flavor of what Manifest was actually like. Our sessions and guests spanned a wide range of topics: prediction markets and forecasting, of course; but also finance, technology, philosophy, AI, video games, politics, journalism and more. We deliberately invited a wide range of speakers with expertise outside of prediction markets; one of the goals of Manifest is to increase adoption of prediction markets via cross-pollination. Okay, but there sure seemed to be a lot of controversial ones… I was the one who invited the majority (~40/60) of Manifest's special guests; if you want to get mad at someone, get mad at me, not Rachel or Saul or Lighthaven; certainly not the other guests and attendees of Manifest. My criteria for inviting a speaker or special guest was roughly, "this person is notable, has something interesting to share, would enjoy Manifest, and many of our attendees would enjoy hearing from them". Specifically: Richard Hanania - I appreciate Hanania's support of prediction markets, including partnering with Manifold to run a forecasting competition on serious geopolitical topics and writing to the CFTC in defense of Kalshi. (In response to backlash last year, I wrote a post on my decision to invite Hanania, specifically) Simone and Malcolm Collins - I've enjoyed their Pragmatist's Guide series, which goes deep into topics like dating, governance, and religion. I think the world would be better with more kids in it, and thus support pronatalism. I also find the two of them to be incredibly energetic and engaging speakers IRL. Jonathan Anomaly - I attended a talk Dr. Anomaly gave about the state-of-the-art on polygenic embryonic screening. I was very impressed that something long-considered scien...
In this episode, we chat with philosopher and historian Dr. Émile P. Torres about the dystopian fantasies of ecologically-blind tech billionaires – transhumanists, longtermists, and effective altruists – of defying nature, transcending humanity, and colonizing the universe. Highlights of our conversation include: how transhumanism is built on the idea of creating God-like AI to reengineer humanity to achieve immortality, sustain capitalist growth, and colonize space; how the effective altruism's utilitarian approach to philanthropy is not only blind to systemic change, social inequalities, and moral integrity, but it also perpetuates neoliberal ideology that further contributes to inequality and exploitation, e.g. Sam Bankman-Fried's ‘Earn to Give' fraud; the intersection of capitalism, longtermism, and the proliferation of global catastrophic risks in the age of AI, and the ethical implications of unchecked technological progress and environmental destruction; the stark differences between the indigenous long-term-thinking approach and the impoverished and hubristic longtermism philosophy put forward by William MacAskill and Nick Bostrom, which prioritizes the existence of trillions of future disembodied people living in computer simulations over the suffering of current day people and nonhumans; their dangerous rhetoric around ‘depopulation panic' based on the underestimation of environmental destruction and anthropocentrism, and how some people like Malcolm and Simone Collins are repopulating humanity with their own seemingly superior genetic material. Our guest today is Steve Hsu is Professor of Theoretical Physics and of Computational Mathematics, Science, and Engineering at Michigan State University. Previously, he was Senior Vice President for Research and Innovation. Steve is an entrepreneur and has started successful ventures in embryo selection, forensic genetics and artificial intelligence. Steve Hsu- Steve is a polymath- you can see just how wide his interests are on his blog infoproc. Despite his mathematical chops Steve is great at having conversations- I recommend Aporia listeners check out his podcast Manifold. During the 2020 racial reckoning, after some controversy, Steve stepped down as Senior Vice President for Research and Innovation at Michigan State University. You can see his response to the allegations against him here and his resignation here. Steve published the first paper showing that polygenic scores can predict phenotype with accuracy- see his paper on height here. Steve and his team also have shown that Genomic Prediction's aneuploidy testing improves pregnancy outcomes. We also talked about my article for Aporia on ethical objections to polygenic screening. In China, Yousheng, loosely translated as "eugenics" doesn't have a bad connotation- as Steve points out here. Steve is skeptical about the deleterious effects of polygenic screening or gene editing due to pleiotropy. Simone Collins, former Aporia guest, was also interviewed on Manifold. She used Genomic Prediction's health index. We talked about Bryan Caplan's books, The Case Against Education and "Selfish Reasons to Have More Kids"

The Crazy Wisdom Podcast features a wide-ranging conversation with Simone Collins, a serial entrepreneur, investor, and co-host of the Based Camp podcast. Topics explored include the concept of 'based' in the context of the podcast, the crisis of belief in authority, the role of AI in governance and its potential to improve bureaucratic efficiencies. Simone shared her views on the impact of demographic collapse on cities and illustrated the potential future of 'techno-feudalism' where power and money concentrate within isolated, secure communities. The discussion also touched upon the role of cryptocurrencies as an alternative during hyperinflation scenarios, based on experience in countries like Argentina. The episode ends with a brief discussion about the potential ways to evade an 'Argentine future' for the US, predicated on curbing bureaucratic waste. Initially understood as someone comfortable with their beliefs, regardless of others' opinions, it has evolved to carry political connotations and baggage. The term now often implies a conservative leaning, especially when contrasted with progressive viewpoints. Cultural and Political Dynamics in New York City and San Francisco: Collins shared her experiences growing up in San Francisco and living in New York City, describing them as progressive environments where there's a prevalent culture of not tolerating differing opinions. She observed that progressive culture often equates being challenged or uncomfortable with personal attacks, impacting open dialogue. Diverse Dinner Parties and Political Dialogues: Collins and her husband host dinner parties in New York City, deliberately inviting a heterodox mix of people, including conservatives, progressives, and others with unconventional views. She noted that criticisms of these gatherings typically come from progressive attendees who feel uncomfortable with conservative perspectives. Personal Political Shifts: Stewart shared his journey of political and ideological transformation, particularly around the time of Donald Trump's election. This shift was a process of questioning and reassessing his long-held beliefs. Demographic Collapse and its Implications: Collins expressed concerns about demographic collapse, particularly in countries like South Korea and Japan. She discussed how this phenomenon might lead to a decline in smaller cities and towns, with a corresponding rise in mega-cities or gated communities. The Role of AI in Future Societies: The conversation touched on the potential impact of AI on governance and societal structures. Collins speculated about a future of 'techno-feudalism,' where AI-driven communities could emerge, leading to a patchwork of different societal models. Cryptocurrency in Economies Facing Hyperinflation: The host and Collins discussed the practical use of cryptocurrencies in countries like Argentina and Venezuela, where traditional currencies are highly unstable. This situation contrasts with the speculative nature of cryptocurrencies in more stable economies like the U.S. Government Bureaucracy and Potential AI Solutions: Collins suggested that AI could streamline government functions and reduce bureaucracy. However, she acknowledged the challenge of implementing such changes due to entrenched interests and the complexity of government structures. Potential for Change in U.S. Governance: The conversation ended on a note of cautious optimism about the possibility of reforming U.S. governance structures, particularly at the state level, despite recognizing the significant challenges ahead.
Join us for a fascinating exploration as we're joined by Simone Collins, an entrepreneur, pronatalist mother, and a consistent Twitter presence. Simone offers an enlightening perspective on pronatalism and its relation to eugenics. Listen in as we discuss the complexities of demographic collapse and the role of diversity in cultural survival. Simone shares insights on how certain cultures, like South Koreans and Native Americans, are at risk of cultural mass extinction, and how a pluralistic approach to pronatalism could help.

Former tech employees Malcolm and Simone Collins believe that as the population dwindles, cultural pluralism and the US's economic system will falter in ways that will cause untold suffering. The solution: have more children. They call themselves “secular Calvinists” who participate in “descendant worship.” But the duo have been dubbed eugenicists on more than one occasion. For them immortality is not about holding on to what you have now, but instead about looking to what comes next. Namely, their children and their children's children. Tech titans like Elon Musk have warned of the catastrophic effects demographic collapse will have on society. Like Musk, Malcolm and Simone Collins have dared to imagine what the future holds for the human race. Hear the conclusion of Savage's riveting conversation with the unorthodox couple. In their book, The Pragmatist's Guide to Crafting Religion, they focus both on how we can fortify traditions against decay and how we can build new traditions out of whole cloth. The Pragmatist's Guide to Crafting Religion studies the origins of ‘wokeism' and how this dangerous and polarizing mind virus has spread with the invention of social media and the internet era. For years, we have been inundated with messages that the world population is out of control as demographers project the global population to reach 10 billion people. But at some point, the rates will decline. People around the world will become older, leading to huge burdens on social services. Malcolm and Simone Collins are pronatalists fighting to stop the fertility collapse that threatens humanity. The husband and wife team are the elite intellectual leaders of the pro-natalist movement, which encourages the bearing of children and support of a higher birth rate to save Western Civilization. Reminiscent of characters from Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, hear Savage in one of his most fascinating interviews to date. We live in a world that is quickly secularizing. How do we fortify our society against the erosion and assault on our traditions? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

What is de-globalisation and why is it important for today’s finance professional? Up until the current pandemic the world had never been more physically close, opening up more opportunities and risks for international trade. However there have also been growing calls to support and protect industries and domestic resources, with such measures contributing to deglobalisation. International companies face the pressure to balance these two conflicting business features while maintaining a viable operation to generate value on the investment from stakeholders In this bite-sized episode I share a few thoughts from a recent article by Simone Collins which takes a brief look at the market forces, regulatory and economic policies that drive deglobalisation and how finance teams can help . #FinanceMentor #SITN #De-Globalisation

In this show we try to answer the concerns of many travelers who are thinking of booking travel for after coronavirus. "How can I book post-Coronavirus trips, but also stay safe and protect my investment?" I am joined by Simone Collins of TravelMax, a travel management company. Simone discusses the ways they have assisted travelers during the pandemic, tips for booking flights, which airlines are the cleanest, and some general travel tips and hacks.
Malcolm and Simone Collins, founders of the Pragmatist Foundation and co-CEOs of Travelmax, a corporate travel management company, authored the bestselling Pragmatist's Guide to Life, a book intended to encourage critical thought and intentional living.
Malcolm and Simone Collins are co-authors of The Pragmatist's Guide To Life: A Guide to Creating Your Own Answers to Life's Biggest Questions. The book is a ruthlessly pragmatic guide to creating your own answers to life's biggest questions. Malcolm is a neuroscientist who abandoned the traditional science path for an MBA from Stanford to prove out his theories in the world as an entrepreneur. Along the way, he met wife, co-author, and business partner Simone who is an equally brilliant. She is an alumnus of the George Washington University with a Masters from University of Cambridge and served as the director of marketing at Hubpages.com. After some time in Silicon Valley and in Asia respectively, Simone and Malcolm began searching for the businesses they now run in the travel industry (TravelMax). They split their time between North American headquarters in Miami, FL and South American offices in Lima, Peru
Malcolm and Simone Collins want to wake people up to really truly think about life. What are you optimizing your life for? Could it be something that is not a positive emotion? This chat is a wild ride which might get some feathers ruffled. For this one you need to open your mind, put aside the times when you might feel personally attacked and instead try to give some of these controversial ideas serious thought. As a reward you'll get to hear the weirdest Positive Psychology analogy I have ever come across. The Pragmatist's Guide to Life

A viral marriage proposal on Reddit, multiple successful companies, and international travel - and that's only the beginning.Originally a neuroscientist focused on brain-computer interface and the evolution of human cognition, whose work is on display at the Smithsonian, Malcolm Collins earned an MBA at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. There he met Simone, his wife and co-author, who at the time was director of Marketing at HubPages.com, managing a team of 20,000 freelancers. Together they co-founded the art commission marketplace ArtCorgi.com, after which Malcolm became Director of Strategy at South Korea's most desired source of early-stage capital, Simone earned her graduate degree from Cambridge while working in venture capital. The couple now runs a number of travel companies (with a focus on Travelmax), splitting their time between North American headquarters in Miami, FL and South American offices in Lima, Peru.In their new book, The Pragmatist's Guide to Life, Malcolm and Simone Collins encourage the use of applied pragmatic thought--a framework for systematically constructing your own beliefs about the world, leveraging those beliefs to decide who you want to be as a person, and creating the person you want to be. “Be open-minded. Actively look for signs that you may be wrong.” Simone's and Malcolm's Steps For Self Improvement: 1) Form a game-plan. Choose the thing you want to maximize in your life. Decide what matters to you. 2) Develop our internal character. What sort of internal character would best execute this game plan, to maximize the thing you think matters most? 3) Develop your public figure. Remain open to the discomfort of feeling offended. Grow yourself out of this stage, and this costume, and away from the cast of characters that remind you of who you are now, so that you have the freedom to redesign yourself. The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway David:The emotion of offense is a red flag that you need to pay attention to that and you need to delve into that with a genuinely open mind; they may be correct in this thing that is offending you, or there may be elements of their worldview that can positively augment your own. I think it's a really important message in our world today, where on college campuses it has become very common to say “this could be offensive to someone, so you're not allowed to say it. You're not allowed to share this information.” In reality, if something is offensive that means it needs to be shared a thousand times more than any other piece of information because it means that it's challenging the way somebody sees the world.Simone: To add to that, if you are proven wrong about something, and you change your mind, it's not a bad thing. You're not a flip-flopper, you're not weak-willed. You're now a better person because you have better information. You're stronger. And you're flexible enough to improve, whereas other people just are broken and they can't. So - get offended, get excited about being offended, and if it turns out you've been wrong for years, well that's fantastic, because now you have better information and you won't make the same mistakes!-- Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. This bonus episode is probably one of my favorite dense episodes that’s a departure from our normal topic: Malcolm and Simone Collins are a married couple and tour de force for figuring out your values with brutal pragmatism – your objective function, as they call it. In this week’s episode, we interview Malcolm and Simone Collins, co-authors of the book The Pragmatist's Guide To Life: A Guide to Creating Your Own Answers to Life's Biggest Questions. As humans, we get to choose what we believe and who we want to be. This book is a ruthlessly pragmatic guide to creating your own answers to life's biggest questions. Each of this book's four chapters covers one of the most important questions a person must ask themselves: What is the purpose of my life? How can I best realize the purpose of my life? Who do I want to be? How do I want other people to think of me? Rather than give you answers to these questions, this guide provides a framework that helps you develop your own answers while equipping you with the neuroscientific tools necessary to transform yourself into whomever you choose to be. Originally a neuroscientist focused on brain-computer interface and the evolution of human cognition (his work is on display at the Smithsonian), Malcolm Collins felt he could learn more about the way humans interact with the world and each other by pursuing an MBA at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. There he met Simone, his wife and co-author, who at the time was Director of Marketing at HubPages.com, managing a team of 20,000 freelancers. Together they co-founded the art commission marketplace ArtCorgi.com, after which Malcolm became Director of Strategy at South Korea's most desired source of early-stage VC capital and Simone earned her graduate degree from Cambridge while working in VC. The couple now runs a number of travel companies (with a focus on Travelmax), splitting their time between North American headquarters in Miami, FL and South American offices in Lima, Peru. The book was created as the work of a nonprofit institution (http://pragmatist.guide/), dedicated to helping people think through the big questions in life without leading them to a specific answer. All proceeds from the sale of the book go to the nonprofit, and not the authors. * Join me for part II of my conversation with Malcolm and Simone Collins. (Please be sure to check out part I, if you haven't already.) * The show is back after a brief hiatus, and I’m so excited to share these new episodes with you! As you know, my mission with this show has always been to help you design and live the life you deserve. And my guests today want to help you do just that. Their mission is to encourage self reflection and assist individuals in challenging their most deeply held beliefs without leading them to specific answers. They’ve written an amazing book called, “The Pragmatist’s Guide to Life”, which helps readers take a deeper dive into self discovery, from the perspective that, “who you are is either who you chose to be or who you have allowed yourself to become.” They are a married couple, who split their time between Miami and Peru, while running their travel companies. I had a ton of fun with this interview, and I really think you are going to enjoy our conversation. Its time to think outside the lines, for part II of my conversation with Malcolm and Simone Collins. // Guest Bio Originally a neuroscientist focused on brain-computer interface and the evolution of human cognition (his work is on display at the Smithsonian), Malcolm Collins felt he could learn more about the way humans interact with the world and each other by pursuing an MBA at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
