Guest Dr. Joe Webb again joins us as we discuss Morgan's comedic background, his reputation as a subversive radio personality, and today's story about a writer seemingly haunted by a neighbor. Hannah's Song, often referred to as The Magnificat of the First Testament, is a collection of Hannah's utopian dreams. She sings of a world where the bows of the warriors are broken and where God lifts the poor from the ash heap and sits them with princes. This sermon explores Hannah's life and story, from which her dreams grew, and it follows the flow of Hannah's dreamsong as it cascaded down through the centuries, inspiring Mary of Nazareth and inspiring us. “Hannah's Dreamsong” was delivered by Tyler Merrill, who is currently in candidacy for Seattle Mennonite Church's Pastor of Faith Formation position. It also serves in part as Tyler's self-introduction to the congregation.Sermon begins at minute marker 5:371 Samuel 1.9-11, 19-20, and 2.1-10ResourcesBibleWorm podcast: Episode 529 – Loving God and Neighbor, Amy Robertson and Robert Williamson, JrThe Poet, The Warrior, The Prophet. DreamSong by Heidi Kraay Two children whose lives are disrupted by wildfire conjure a mythical sea creature as a way to restore hope. Playwright's Statement: Like many big ideas, the theme “Envisioning a Global Green New Deal” got me thinking from a childlike perspective in order to see into it more clearly and from the gut. Behavioral artist Aki Shibata is delighted that the all-night festival Northern Spark will return to her Frogtown and Rondo neighborhoods. This year's festival takes place at four locations along and near University Avenue in St. Paul, from 9 p.m. Saturday until 2 a.m., with a closing event Sunday morning that ends shortly after sunrise on Raspberry Island. The theme for the artists' work is “What the World Needs Now.” Visitors may navigate their way among the locations to admire a range of art, many of which have interactive elements. The locations include the Victoria Theater Arts Center, the Rondo Community Library, Springboard for the Arts, and the Minnesota Museum of American Art. Shibata says she plans to attend them all, but she is particularly looking forward to the Drive-in Movie Extravaganza with shadow puppets, created by Eva Adderlay at the Victoria Theater, and to watching the sun rise over the interactive closing event by Sequoia Hauck, which will include painters, singers, and dancers celebrating our connection to the water. Allison Baker, an art professor at Hamline University, was excited to see the solo show by Ta-coumba T. Aiken at Dreamsong Gallery in northeast Minneapolis. Baker said the show “couldn't have been better timed,” coming weeks after Aiken was awarded a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship for 2022. The exhibit, entitled “Awakenings,” features Aiken's large, abstract paintings and works on paper. Photo by Tom Dunn, courtesy of Dreamsong Ta-coumba T. Aiken. Ripple Effect, 2021. Acrylic on canvas. “He talks about channeling the spirits of his ancestors into form and color,” said Baker, adding that he does so in “beautiful and incredible ways.” In some paintings, figures seem to emerge from the energetic lines on the canvas. She also recommends paying attention to the smaller studies and collages, which are a delicate counterpoint to the larger work. The exhibit at Dreamsong runs through June 25. You may see more of Aiken's work at Soo Visual Arts Center in Minneapolis. The show, opening Sunday, is “Change is God-Take Root Among the Stars: Black Abstraction in the Midwest” and features the work of 17 artists. Minneapolis-based performer and costumer Anissa Lubbers suggests catching the “10-Minute Play Festival” from the Lakeshore Players, which runs through Sunday at the Hanifl Performing Arts Center in White Bear Lake. Lubbers said the festival is an audience favorite that traditionally wraps up the players' season. The show features 10 plays, written by playwrights around the world and performed and directed by local talent. As for style, the audience can expect a bit of everything, from the silly to the serious and timely, from comedy to horror.

Inspired by the poem Dream Song 14, by John Berryman. "Ever to confess you are bored is to admit you have no inner resources." It takes every ounce of willpower I have to work. I tend to be lazy and I enjoy my rest, I enjoy TV I enjoy comfy clothes and a beautiful home and I am one of those people who makes big plans and has a very difficult time following through. I have good ideas but it takes me a long long time to execute them. But 2021, that's going to change. I'm going to push myself into situations which require me to build "inner resources". The Dream Song of Olaf Åsteson a Nordic Initiation: 12 day Painting & Dream workshop through the 12 Holy Nights The Dream Song of Olaf Asteson is an ancient Norwegian Folk Song. Olaf falls asleep on Christmas eve and "sleeps" through the holy nights waking on January 6th epiphany. Olaf while "sleeping" experiences secrets of the human being and cosmos. The dream-song gives us the "spiritual" pictures in poetic form of his initiation journey. As Joseph Campbell reminds us, the Hero's Journey is found in myths, legends and poem-songs.

This conversation also covers a lot of arenas of interest to our listeners including how Hurricane Maria impacted him and his family in Puerto Rico, to his disgust for capitalism and Shark Tank (to my chagrin), as well as Chris’ three pieces of being a good person. This episode was recorded in a practice space - where other bands were practicing, so you may hear random bouts of song in the background here and there.MUSIC NOTE:- This week you got to hear tunes from the Chris Lee-Rodriguez’s debut release, “It Could Happen,” which he self-released on May 3. - Chris’s solo sound takes on a number of the styles he’s presented throughout his various projects over the years - including expanding into more of his classical Spanish guitar stylings that compliment the more chaotic moments of the album.- On this episode, you got to hear the tracks, “Written by the Golden Gate Bridge,” “Dream Song,” and “Hurricane is a Taino word.” You can check out the album through the Chris’s Bandcamp page, and through all of the streaming platforms!THE CONNECTEDU NETWORK- This week, you got to learn about the ConnectEDU Network, of which this podcast is now a contributing member!- ConnectEDU Network connects the unique perspectives and expert insight of higher education through podcasting. In this episode, the team talks about persona poems and--spoiler alert!--finds that persona poems might not have as much to do with voicing as we expected! We talk about "Trillium" by Louise Glück, "Coal" by Audre Lorde, and "Dream Song 4" by John Berryman. https://poetrying.wordpress.com/2009/03/23/trillium-louise-gluck/ https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/42577/coal https://www.poets.org/poetsorg/poem/dream-song-4

Sarah Armstrong came from a large family in southwestern Pennsylvania and learned fiddling at the age of 5. Her favorite mentor was her Uncle Laney and her Dream Song came to her in a dream about him. She woke up and learned it. Samuel Bayard listened and transcribed many of her tunes in 1943 and 1944. You can see these transcriptions in an 80-page book called Hill Country Tunes. I'll post the pdf file in the discussion thread with another one of her tunes.

In this episode we discuss line breaks, enjambment, line endings--the typographical feature that alerts readers that they are encountering a poem. We discuss "To a Poor Old Woman" by William Carlos Williams; "What are the Years" by Marianne Moore; and "Dream Song 89" by John Berryman. Williams:(https://www.poetryfoundation.org/resources/learning/core-poems/detail/51653) Moore: (http://scienceplanets-rudi.blogspot.com/2011/08/poem-what-are-years-by-marianne-moore.html) Berryman: (https://allpoetry.com/Dream-Song-89:-Op.-posth.-no.-12) For those of you following along with the links... notice how WCW doesn't read the line breaks in the recording of "To a Poor Old Woman"!

São Paolo has a traffic problem. But while the cars stand still, motoboys (and motogirls) ride up the "corridor of death" between gridlock. Over two hundred thousand of them. It's an incredibly dangerous job. Spanish artist, Antoni Abad gave the motoboys a voice atmegafone.net in the early days of the mobile internet and will tell you all about them, from the favela to the app economy. He knows his motoboys. Links from this episode: The motoboy section of Megafone.net is still running, the better part of a decade later. If you're Sydney-based, you might want to check out his Sydney project Blind.wiki. If you're blind or vision impaired, you might want to contribute. You can also check out a few of megafone.net's other channels. Read the New York Times' article on Motoboys from 2004. Dated, but still good. Antoni was in Sydney for Art and About as a guest of theSydney Cervantes institute. You can also check out Rinaldo's mini-documentary about life as a motoboy. (It's ok: there are subtitles.) Today I barely have a voice, but I went ahead and attempted to read anyway. Apologies for the gravel. The poem today is "Dream Song 22 (Of 1826)" from John Berryman's 77 Dream Songs. By chance, this poem happens to mention the 4th of July, so there you have it. Celebrate. Eat something. Stand in the heat. Look to the sky. Yours, Robyn

Next Step #273: 50 years after Rev. Dr. Martin Luther Kings Jr's "I have a Dream Speech," Fr. Vazken shares some thoughts and offers a challenge to dream of peace - bringing about peace without the use of violence. With the imminent threat of war in Syria, a candid look at our faith - do we really believe that we can overcome evil with love? Do we believe there are non-violent alternatives to threats of death and annihilation? This 'Cast consists of 100% listener requests -and I must say you folks have good taste! We start things off with a little snippet of an interview from 1993 in Minneapolis."Well, 'No' is a big word..."We then bounce forward to 1999 in JB's hometown of Cleveland. Pay attention - 19 minutes into the 'cast JoJo hooks up with the drummers and starts incessantly teasing a Big Chief jam. Dave follows suit, the horns get in synch and soon we have a giant Big Chief marching around the venue. That's a request of an anonymous listener! Then we have a special treat - a Barstools rap from July of 1986, six months before it appears in the setlists as a song! That Barstools rap segues into Coconuts, but I decided to switch things up and play the Coconuts encore of that Cleveland 1999 date. Then another treat - Cardboard Box. Thanks Chris Whitestone for the request. A rare Mikey instrumental... really love the tension that is built mid-way through that song. It seemed to fit perfectly as a segue into our next selection.Low Spark > Dream Song > Low Spark - this is the encore from a show in May of 1998 in Santa Barbara, CA. It takes some serious kahonas to slow things down and play Dream Song during an encore and this one does not disappoint. Thanks to Stuart Chandler for the request. No matter what some people say, Dream Song is one of my favorite encore songs. I find it gives me a physical and mental breather. Perhaps even a little head space to reflect. In any case I believe JB when he sings, "You know you can, because you've lived so many lives before, in your dreams."And finally another anonymous request. I am a sucker for Let's Get the Show on the Road but when paired with Tie Your Shoes I am an ALL-DAY sucker... wow! Thanks for listening, tell your friends about us and keep sending those requests - if I've got it and it is from before 2002 I will do my best to play it for you.May 3, 1993 KTCZ 97.1FM Studios, Minneapolis, MNInterviewJuly 23, 1999 Nautica Stage, Cleveland, OHwith the Dirty Dozen Brass BandChristmas Katie >Big Chief JamJuly 14, 1986 Uptown Lounge, Athens, GAAiko jam >Barstools RapJuly 23, 1999 Nautica Stage, Cleveland, OHwith the Dirty Dozen Brass BandCoconutsOctober 20, 1986 Uptown Lounge, Athens, GACardboard BoxMay 30, 1998 County Bowl, Santa Barbara, CALow Spark of High Heeled Boys >Dream Song >Low Spark of High Heeled BoysApril 27, 1999 Moran Theatre, Jacksonville, FLLet's Get the Show on the Road >Tie Your Shoes >Mr. SoulDOWNLOAD the cast here (right click to save to hard drive):Everyday Companion Podcast #54Click here to subscribe through iTunes.
We're brewing up another blizzard here in Colorado, but in Atlanta it is 60 degrees. This NYE Special is dedicated to those who have been before and cannot make it to the New Year's festivies this year (like me). For those of you who were planning on it but physically could not leave Denver International Airport, for you I dedicate part 2!1996 was a memorable year for me and the Everyday Companion. In spring 96 I received my Master's degree and in Winter 1996 we published the first Everyday Companion. The New Year's Eve shows at the Fox Theatre would be the debut of this first hand made, home made volume. I had the good fortune of seeing Panic at a small intimate gathering at the Morton Theater in Athens on December 28th but did not realize the best was yet to come! Lisa and I had good fortune looking down on us, or maybe a guardian angel. Third row in front of Houser for all three nights at the Fox in Atlanta in 1996.After the shows I wrote on Spreadnet that I thought some part of me 'would always be in row CCC' and I still feel the same way. I met so many great people at these shows, folks who would end up being even better friends. I feel a warm glow sweep over me whenever I remember the fog in Athens on the night of the 28th and when I recall hugging Lisa in the swaying orchestra pit.Without further ado - New Year's Eve run 1996 brought to you in two parts.PART ONEHighlights 12/29/96 and 12/30/96Fox Theatre, Atlanta, GA12/29Jack,Last Straw >Wondering (with David Blackmon)Greta >Diner12/30Junior >Ain't No UseJAM >Good Morning Little Schoolgirl >Dream SongMake sure to click COMMENT below to let us know what you think -DOWNLOAD the cast here:Everyday Companion Podcast #32Click here to subscribe through iTunes.
