Let's not forget that it also sent Natalie's kids to collegeWe (your EPM Conversations hosts) owe a lot – a financial kind of debt as well as a professional one – to Shankar and Hyperion/Oracle on premises /PBCS/EPBCS/EPM Cloud Planning. Seriously, I first set eyes on what was then Hyperion Planning Desktop (which alas I cannot find a screenshot of but know it's out there somewhere), I thought, “Cameron, you idiot, this is the future” and so it has been through (gulp) decades of work. Never, our Performance Management audience, look askance at a sure thing. Part of that product's success has been Shankar Viswanathan's careful stewardship of a product that grew from an application wrapper around Essbase (and a horrific and quickly abandoned Win32 app that was supposed to be the workspace of users of All Things Hyperion and yes, Shankar, I really do hope you didn't create that) to a complete EPM cloud platform. At its core, planning and budgeting hasn't at it's core really changed all that much (ZBB came and went, driver based planning is still here, and yes AI/ML now has its turn in the Wheel of Planning Fortune) but what we still call Planning certainly has. Of course Shankar didn't write each line of code nor did he define and design every bit and bob of UI, but it's easy to see his steady hand in Planning's evolution through the lens of customer success.IntrospectionEach and every one of EPM Conversations' guests is a joy for they are enthusiastic, open, thoughtful, visionary, and just about everything one might hope for in a colleague and a friend. Shankar is all of things and yet he is different. By that I mean Shankar is quiet in the physical sense. We struggled with Shankar's voice until we (we = Celvin) realized that is simply how Shankar talks; he is well worth listening to and the volume button on your phone isn't that hard to use. Sometimes how we think is reflected in how we speak: introspection, consideration, reasoning, and sensitivity don't need to be shouted to be understood. Shankar is well worth a listen.Maybe the most interesting partAll of what I wrote about Shankar's professional interests hold true for his personal ones. There's a wide range in all three areas of historical men, literature, and movies: E.O. Wilson, , Gandhi, and Steve Jobs for the historical figures, in reading, Ayn Rand as a teenager, to E.F. Schumacher's Small is Beautiful, John Kenneth Galbraith's The Anatomy of Power, and Fritjof Capra's The Tao of Physics, and finally a varied palette of movies in Shawshank Redemption, The Bang Bang Club, and Heat. This is, in case you've not been able to tell, one of my favorite episodes.Join us, won't you?

Interview with Christian Minkus As regards the future, it is important for us to respond to the wishes and concerns of financial intermediaries and to find joint solutions Christian Minkus, Head of the Legal Section Securities und Markets Division FMA, Financial Market Authority Liechtenstein Dear Mr Minkus, Even before the AIFMD was introduced, the Principality of Liechtenstein implemented the Directive in 2012. An article in the journal ZBB 2014, 22ff stated " ...the Principality of Liechtenstein is included because this EEA state has wrested the traditional role of "first mover...." from Luxembourg; it did this by adopting it in full in December 2012." At XOLARIS, we are familiar with the issue of first movers and the associated risks. What motivated the FMA to take this step ahead of any other European country and in this way put Liechtenstein very clearly on the map? Liechtenstein has close economic and social ties with its neighbours. It also was and, therefore, continues to be a concern that mutual market access should be made possible. As a member of the European Economic Area, Liechtenstein is also required to implement the European financial market regulatory regime into national law. The rapid, consistent and market-driven implementation of strategic EU regulations, such as the AIFMD Directive, creates certain competitive advantages and this precisely in sectors where markets are only just opening up. As a small country, Liechtenstein uses its inherent advantage of short distances. It is a very agile and innovative country and its fund centre strategy is a successful one. more: https://www.yumpu.com/en/document/read/65724787/the-xolaris-market-news-n01 ___ Follow us on LinkedIn for news and updates or send a message to @xolarisgroup or by e-mail to info@xol-group.com for questions or support. linktr.ee/xolaris_group www.xol-group.com | XOLARIS AG | Austrasse 15, 9490 Vaduz Tel. +423 265 056 0 | Fax +423 265 056 9 | Mail: info@xol-group.com Press Contact: Zoe Peffer | +49 7531 584 880 | z.peffer@xol-group.com

Justin Leigh from focus4growth joins the GrowCFO Show to discuss the CFO's role in supporting profitable business growth. We look at the Psychology, skills and systems needed to drive that growth and why the CFO is well placed to drive the business change that is needed. About Justin Leigh Justin's background is working in large corporations including 3M. He has worked in sales, sales leadership and business leadership. He set up his own company 3 years ago, specialising in providing training coaching & consultancy to unlock growth potential in businesses Over his career Justin has worked alongside a number of CFOs. He sees the CFO role as vital to delivering profitable business growth. The key role of the CFO in this context is to help map out strategies for growth programmes, and provide resources from the finance team to undertake more detailed business modelling. Why is profitable business growth so important? Thats actually quite simple. Delivering extra profitable revenue can make a huge Impact on the p&l. It can be a game changer, and is the easiest way to remove other obstacles & issues in the business. Growth unlocks all sorts of opportunities. Executing profitable business growth isn't quite that simple though. It takes planning and focussed execution. Lots of analysis of plans and seeking out opportunities is where it always starts, with one key question. How do I over deliver revenue growth? role of CFO in this analysis is key, but the role of the CFO is so broad that focus on programmes that drive the top line can be overlooked. How does the CFO support profitable business growth? Revenue comes from a portfolio of products, but not all products are equal. Some will be more profitable than others. Growth by itself is not sufficient. First there's a need to identify the most profitable parts of the portfolio. Then address product & portfolio mix, developing the most profitable parts of portfolio. The CFO helps with high level strategy, his team supporting with the detailed analysis. Understanding product and customer profitability isn't always straightforward. The CFO has a big change role during implementation. The budget is a very effective way of driving the change. ZBB can be used to make sure the right areas are emphasised, and budget is taken away from less profitable bits of the business. The budget drives a change management approach. What stops the CFO getting involved? Volume of work is often the biggest obstacle. The CFO gets involved in a broad range of initiatives and is often overloaded. Big tech projects don't help, the CFO is increasingly getting involved in these. Aside from this, Justin believes the biggest issue to overcome is restrictive beliefs. "We tried that before" is a common thing that needs to be overcome. You need psychology to be right. To break through and unlock the opportunities. You need to change the perspective of what is possible. The 3 Step process to profitable business growth Justin teaches a 3 stage process. Psychology Skills Systems A growth mindset is vitally important. The business team rarely meets just to discuss growth and how each function contributes to it. In workshops Justin will challenge each member of the business team with the same question. How does your role contribute to growth in the organisation? Once psychology and mindset are sorted only then can you move on to step 2 and consider what skills are lacking. Usually its about relationship building and becoming provider of choice. Its rarely about pitching. CFO and finance has a role here. Finance need to build models to support deals. The CFO might be involved in meetings with clients. The clients finance people might work with his own team to help structure deals and consider how to make it affordable. Finance needs more customer facing skills. Moving from functional head to business leader Justin's experience is that outstanding individual contributors get promoted.
We’re all familiar with the yearly rounds of budgeting within our companies. But how often are we really looking at the WAY that we are budgeting? So often, the budgeting process is simply looking at the prior year’s budget, adding a little bit of inflation room onto it, and moving forward, never really stopping to sit back and ask ourselves WHY we are spending the dollars that we are. And if the COVD-19 pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that we can likely make do without a lot of the things that we were spending an awful lot of money on before the pandemic hit. Things like travel, entertainment, being more intentional about where we’re spending technology dollars. Which is why this week’s guest is the perfect person to address what is known as “Zero Based Budgeting,” or ZBB. Adanma Akujieze is the Chief Financial Officer at Larson Design Group, and has been instrumental in adapting the ZBB method on her team. She was kind enough to sit down and discuss: -What is ZBB and why should you care about it? -The advantages of ZBB during and after the pandemic -How to make ZBB work for you -How you may be implementing the ZBB mindset without even knowing it. According to Harvard Business Review, under Zero-based budgeting (ZBB), “Expenses must be justified for each new budget period based on demonstrable needs and costs, as opposed to the more common method of using last year’s budget as your starting point, then adjusting up or down. ZBB is a straightforward, intuitively simple way to aggressively strip out costs that cannot be rationally justified.” Sounds wonderful, right? Well, as this week’s guest (and the HBR article referenced above) point out, there is no such thing as a ‘one-size fits-all’ silver bullet, even when it comes to aggressively cutting costs. David Ward is the Director of Global Sourcing & Procurement at a global pharmaceutical company, and has held procurement positions at Ford, Rolls Royce, AstraZeneca, and Unilever. During his time at Unilever, he became the ZBB Programme Leader for Marketing and Business Services, and so he has seen the advantages and disadvantages of this budgeting and management method first hand. In this interview, David explains how ZBB works and whether it is a strategy that procurement should actively consider in the current economic conditions:

Zac Brown Band became stars in the late 2000s on the strength of the number one country hits "Chicken Fried" and "Toes," songs that seemed like throwbacks to the country-rock of the '70s. For a while, ZBB continued in that vein, scoring another breezy, beachy hit with "Knee Deep" and underscoring their '70s singer/songwriter heritage with the warm, burnished ballad "Colder Weather," but soon the group proved themselves to be a restless jam band, as eager to crank up the amps as they were to ride a supple groove. This sense of musical adventure led Zac Brown Band to cut both a 2014 EP with Foo Fighters rocker Dave Grohl and to dive deep into pop music on 2019's The Owl, yet these creative instincts also helped the group cultivate a loyal following who were happy to roll with these changes. Moving to BMG, the Zac Brown Band released The Owl in September 2019. Recorded with a variety of splashy big-budget producers, The Owl debuted at two upon its September 20, 2019 release. A week after The Owl appeared, Zac Brown surprised his fans with the release of The Controversy, his debut solo album; it was recorded with many of the same producers as The Owl.

How can big teams and companies tackle growth strategies? It often requires them to move faster, be more nimble, and make faster decisions — basically to act like a startup. But this is not something that comes easily to massive companies with multiple layers of processes and systems in place. Chris Roark helps organizations achieve that startup speed. Chris Roark is a Managing Director with Accenture Strategy, where he leads competitiveness and zero-based cost management areas in North America. He works with leaders of consumer-packaged goods and industrial and retail companies, helping them drive enterprise value through innovative growth strategies, operating model designs, and structural costs resets. Chris also co-authored The Big Zero, a book that outlines how organizations can achieve startup speed at enterprise scale by adopting a Zero-Based Mindset. The business landscape is changing, and that has an impact on the speed at which we need to do business. Chris explains what trust in the business context means and the consequences of diminished trust for companies looking to move with the agility to keep up with the times. He also dives into The Big Zero and how it works in helping companies get startup speed and enterprise scale. There needs to be a shift from Zero-Based Budgeting to Zero-Based Mindset — we need to go from being finance-driven to culture-driven, and that’s where the dynamic part of looking at things on a regular basis to adjust plans as the real world changes. We dig into the importance of having agility and optionality in maintaining competitiveness and why it is crucial for leaders to be mentors and coaches on this front. Daniel de los Reyes is one of the premiere percussionists in the world. Even if he wasn’t a member of one of today’s most popular bands, the Zac Brown Band, his resume is as impressive as anyone’s in the music business. He’s recorded or toured with: Earth, Wind, and Fire, Fleetwood Mac, Don Henley, Sting, Chicago, Ben Vereen, Aretha Franklin, James Taylor, Steve Winwood, Sheryl Crow, and Peter Frampton to name a few. All that being said he’s an even better human being. In our time together, we certainly talked drumming and music. However, we spent significantly more time discussing life, family, priorities, mistakes, ambitions, and giving back. Daniel has seen it all and has walls full of awards to prove it. Right now, one of his priorities is furthering his philanthropic endeavor, Day Glow Music. Danny blends culture, art, and music together to educate and enlighten kids with the hopes that they can share their passion with others. He’s also working to bring relief to hurricane victims in Puerto Rico. We also speak in detail about his current gig, percussionist with the Zac Brown Band. He tells how his relationship with the band started, including his first gig with them at Red Rocks, becoming a member and how each person in ZBB builds a group concept that is integral to the success of the band. We finish off with a sprint through the obstacle course that is the DWG Rorschach test! This is unapologetically exploration and creativity and art. And the way it’s presented, we can take it all over the world.”— Zac Brown Participants: • Zac Brown • Niko Moon • Ben Simonetti • Jim Casey, NCD editor in chief
Kevin is leading a 4 day training event later this year. Budgeting and cost control for managers. In this episode Kevin and Graham talk to you about the importance of getting this aspect of your business right. They tell you why traditional budgeting really isn't fit for purpose any more. Budgeting and Cost Control for Managers is running in London from 13 - 16 June 2017 and you can find more information here. This 4 day training course is ideal for senior managers who are involved in business planning and budgeting or managers who control cost and budgeting for their departments or organizations or who are currently managing projects and/or contracts. Whats wrong with traditional budgeting? The one thing thats guaranteed about a budget is that it will be wrong. Many big companies such as Kevin's old employer, ICI,prepare budgets for the following calendar year in August or September. Even in January, month one of the year they are already out of date. By December they are irrelevant because things have moved on. The modern business world is moving fast. Events come along that are real game changers. This year we've seen a BREXIT vote and a US election result that went the opposite way to what many predicted. The consequence of each will be disruptive change. The timing, consequences, and extent of the change remains uncertain. We've also seen the arrival of new business models in a number of markets and seen these new models completely change the way business is done. Uber have disrupted the taxi marketplace. The rise of Amazon and other big online retailers has completely reshaped the high street. Technology is advancing at an ever faster rate and opening new possibilities every day. The one thing thats certain is that disruption is here to stay and we will see more and more of it. The time frame of the traditional annual budget cycle simply doesn't lend itself to the uncertainties of the modern business landscape, and we need something else that is much more flexible. So, what do you teach in budgeting and cost control for managers to address this? We look at the whole approach to "Blowing up the Budget". You can't take the budget process and change it in isolation to everything else. Budgeting and forecasting must align with business strategy & business plans The first thing we do is look at the whole planning & control framework, and understand how business strategy translates into plans and targets. We then look at how to set these targets, review them and revise them as things change. The targets can be both financial and non financial, and the financial ones will be the ones that inform the "budget" in whatever form that takes. We look at replacing budgets with rolling forecasts. In essence this means every month or every quarter you review your forecast for the next 12 months. So if you do this quarterly, you monitor your performance against the first 3 months of the forecast. At the end of the quarter you review, revise the remaining 9 months of the forecast and add on a further 3 months. This means you always have a 12 month forward view. Rolling forecasts work well with our "next 100 days" concept, because they recognise that the only period you really have control of is the immediate quarter in front of you, and the further out you project the more your plan turns into an aspiration. Challenging budget proposals Being able to robustly challenge (or conversely robustly justify to others) spending proposals is a key part of every senior managers toolkit. To do this we take a good look at Zero Based Budgeting (ZBB). ZBB is the foundation stone of nearly all cost reduction techniques. Many traditional budgets are based on the budget in the previous year and adjusting by a % for inflation, wage increases and so on. If you let this continue, you get fat in your budget and you lose the link between spending and the business plan. In ZBB every item of spend is reviewed,
Coy Bowles, guitar player/keyboardist/song writer, from the Zac Brown Band joins Josh on Fairly Normal. They talk about how the ZBB got together, Coy tells a few insane stories from the road, where his favorite place to play is, what it was like for him growing up in a small town in Georgia and he shares something about performing that he's never told anyone before. This episode is PACKED with great stories that take you behind the velvet rope. If you like music, this one is for you.
Living Room Clutter is your show for everything Rock Band 4 and Guitar Hero. his week the big topics are A new week of DLC, and with Motorhead, Five Finger Death Punch, Royal Blood, and The Zac Brown Band left to go this month, it’s time to see who gets the pack and who gets singles this month. Motorhead has the classic status, Royal Blood and FFDP have the modern chart-toppers, ZBB has cross-chart success and Chris Cornell/Dave Grohl! Who do we think it is this week? Five Finger Death Punch – Got Your Six Motorhead – Thunder & Lightning Royal Blood – Figure It Out "Both Guitar Hero Live and Rock Band 4 have failed to live up to expectations following their respective launches late last year, with both GH publisher Activision and Rock Band publisher Mad Catz reporting a relatively poor performance for both games. In fact, Mad Catz has had to lay off 37% of its workforce following Rock Band 4's failure to sell as well as it had hoped.

Good luck next week!! Black-Eyed News: In a year of declining album sales, Justin Timberlake's The 20/20 Experience was the biggest selling album of 2013, according to Billboard. A total of 2.43 million copies sold. While the ranking is certainly an honor for Timberlake, it's less flattering for the record industry as a whole: The 20/20 Experience was the only album to sell over 2 million in 2013, which marks the lowest top-seller in SoundScan's 22 years of tracking sales. The previous low came in 2008, with Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III selling 2.87 million copies. Rounding out the top 10 was Eminem's acclaimed The Marshall Mathers LP 2 (1.73 million), Luke Bryan's Crash My Party (1.52 million), Imagine Dragons' Night Visions (1.4 million), Bruno Mars' Unorthodox Jukebox (just under 1.4 million), Florida Georgia Line's Here's to the Good Times (1.35 million), Drake's Nothing Was the Same (1.34 million), Beyoncé's surprise LP Beyoncé (1.3 million), Blake Shelton's Based on a True Story (1.11 million) and Jay Z's app-backed Magna Carta...Holy Grail (1.1 million). What do we think this means to the future of album sales? Total sold in top 10 14.67 Million average of 1.46 million per but 7 of those albums were not even close to that number. Editorial Aside: What is to blame for the low sales? Piracy claims the record company; the artists say streaming is the villain here. But how about the cost of an album at the store. Not a digital copy but a hard copy. I have seen them for as much as $18 in the store. Also quality some of the stuff is just not that good. Back to the Numbers: The top single sales were led by a different set of artists. Robin Thicke's ubiquitous "Blurred Lines" came in at Number One with 6.5 million sales. Mackemore and Ryan Lewis' "Thrift Shop" was a close second, with 6.15 million. The other top sellers were Imagine Dragons ("Radioactive," 5.5 million), Florida Georgia Line ("Cruise," 4.69 million), Lorde ("Royals," 4.42 million), Katy Perry ("Roar," 4.41 million), P!nk featuring Nate Ruess ("Just Give Me a Reason," 4.32 million), another from Macklemore and Ryan Lewis ("Can't Hold Us," 4.26 million), Bruno Mars ("When I Was Your Man," 3.93 million) and Rihanna ("Stay," 3.85 million). http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/justin-timberlakes-20-20-experience-tops-2013-album-sales-20140103#ixzz2pZu3Stlq Phil Everly, whose hits with his older brother, Don, as the Everly Brothers carried the close fraternal harmonies of country tradition into pioneering rock ’n’ roll, died on Friday in Burbank, Calif. He was 74. The group’s official website said he died in a hospital near his home in Southern California. His son Jason said the cause of death was complications of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. With songs like “Wake Up Little Susie,” “Bye Bye Love,” “Cathy’s Clown,” “All I Have to Do Is Dream” and “When Will I Be Loved?,” which was written by Phil Everly, the brothers were consistent hitmakers in the late 1950s and early 1960s. They won over country, pop and even R&B listeners with a combination of clean-cut vocals and the rockabilly strum and twang of their guitars. They were also models for the next generations of rock vocal harmonies for the Beatles, Linda Ronstadt, Simon and Garfunkel and many others who recorded their songs and tried to emulate their precise, ringing vocal alchemy. The Everly Brothers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in its first year, 1986. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/05/arts/music/phil-everly-half-of-pioneer-rock-duo-dies-at-74.html?hpw&rref=arts&_r=0 Blues man Tabby Thomas, a well known & widely influential Baton Rouge musician, club owner, radio DJ and recording artist, and the father of blues musician & actor Chris Thomas King, has passed away. He was 84 and just four days shy of his birthday. Born Ernest J. Thomas in Baton Rouge January 5th, 1929, Thomas owned and operated a blues club called Tabby’s Blues Box and Heritage Hall for nearly three decades until it’s closure in 2004. “There was something about Tabby’s Blues Box,” wrote Chelsea Brasted for the New Orleans Times Picayune, “An intangible quality seeped out of the joint on nights when legends were being made on its stage, solidifying its place in local music lore.” Thomas has long been one of the best known blues musicians in Baton Rouge. Having learned music in a local church Choir as a child, and following an Air Force stint, Tabby relocated to California and began a touring and recording career, notably with Hollywood Records and the well-known Excello Records label. Returning to Louisiana, Tabby’s records were quickly played on local radio on New Orleans’ WBOK. His music earned him a spot at New Orleans’ famed Dew Drop Inn venue — a premiere live blues room that was host to Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Guitar Slim and dozens more top acts of the time. He caught the attention of Louis Armstrong, who arranged for the Eric Shaw Agency to book Thomas a tour. Tabby’s son, Grammy award winner Chris Thomas King, found his first experiences at the club that he helped his father create. He signed his first recording contract with Sire Records, a subsidiary of Warner Brothers, at Tabby’s Heritage Hall. King went on to sell more than ten million records, earning a Grammy for Album of the Year for his cover of Skip James’ “Hard Time Killing Floor Blues” track on the O! Brother Where Art Thou? soundtrack. King famously played bluesman Tommy Johnson in the film. http://www.americanbluesscene.com/2014/01/famed-baton-rouge-bluesman-passes-away/ Rolling Stone Magazine recently published a story reporting that Allman Brothers bass player Oteil Burbridge, the man who has been providing the lower end for the Allman Brothers for decades is leaving the band. Fans of the band immediately began protesting and about the shake-up. “We’re here to assure you that that is not true,” said Oteil, refuting the claim on Social Media, “and he will be playing with the Allman Brothers throughout 2014. Happy New Year and thank you to all the fans for your support!” Oteil also had this to say on his website: “For the record…. It was an amazing experience recording and playing with the Zac Brown Band and with Dave Grohl in November. It was an awesome time and a reunion of sorts for me with old friends Chris Fryar, Penn Robertson, and Eric Pretto (the drummer, bass tech and guitar tech for ZBB, respectively) who I’ve known for over a decade. I am proud to be part Zac’s record. 2014 will mark the beginning of my 16th year with the Allman Brothers and as we celebrate the bands 45th anniversary, it reminds me what a huge part of my musical life this incredible band has been. I’m really grateful and proud to be such a big part of the ABB history. And we ain’t done yet! I certainly hope to work with the Zac Brown Band again in the future. They are incredibly talented and great guys. Wherever I land in the future, I hope my fans understand that my primary concern is for the wellbeing of my family and will continue to bring you the highest level of groove and improv that I can muster.” http://www.americanbluesscene.com/2014/01/trucks-says-oteils-staying-put-despite-rolling-stone-story/ and Lastly Jack White has a new album in the works, and it looks like it could be coming out soon. In a recent chat with fans on the message board of his label, Third Man Records, White dropped the news: "I'm producing two albums this month, and finishing them," he said. "One of them is mine." Assuming White is referring to a solo album, this could mean a follow-up to 2012's Blunderbuss will be appearing shortly. In an interview with Rolling Stone last February, White mentioned that he had 20 to 25 songs already written. "It's definitely not one sound," he said of the new material. "It's definitely several. Like you heard in Blunderbuss, there's many different styles there. I don't pick my style and then write a song. I just write whatever comes out of me, and whatever style it is is what it is, and it becomes something later." http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/jack-white-finishing-up-new-album-20140105#ixzz2pZxGOBhK Blues In The Area: 1/10 FRIDAY Ronnie Earl - The Katherine Hepburn Center for the Arts (8pm) - Old Saybrook, CT Dan Stevens - Perks & Corks (9pm) - Westerly, RI Johnny Hoy & the Bluefish - Chan's (8pm) - Woonsocket, RI Blues Alley - The Mona Lisa Restaurant (8-11pm) - Wolcott, CT Eight To The Bar - The Knickerbocker Cafe (8pm) - Westerly, RI 1/11 SATURDAY The Alexis P.
