Arthur Jeffes of Penguin Café, Johnny Borrell, Douglas Dare and Judi Jackson discuss taking your own music seriously when starting out, selling out, and whether it's OK to re-hash your previous work.Musician, composer and band leader Arthur Jeffes formed Penguin Cafe in 2009, bringing together a talented and disparate group of musicians initially to perform his father Simon Jeffes' legacy of world renowned Penguin Cafe Orchestra music, 12 years after his untimely death in 1997. Since then, they have continued to perform the music of Penguin Cafe Orchestra alongside their own compositions, and have released five albums to date. The most recent, Rain Before Seven…, came out in the summer.Douglas Dare's piano-led music creates an elegant minimalist sound. He released his debut album Whelm in 2014, which was made on a battered grand piano, then followed it up in 2016 with Aforger. In 2020, he released his third album, Milkteeth.British musician Johnny Borrell is best known as the frontman of the band Razorlight. The band have gone through several line-up changes, with him the sole permanent member. In between the band's activities, he released a solo album in 2013, and currently has a new project called Jealous Nostril.Singer Judi Jackson grew up in Roanoke, Virginia, playing piano and singing in the church choir. After moving to London, she released her debut EP, and in 2020 won vocalist of the year at the Jazz FM awards. Last year she released her full-length debut album, Grace. Her live show includes her own interpretations of songs from jazz greats, along with her original soul-infused music.
Link to the Music: https://tinyurl.com/stabatsolemnIn this episode, Giorgio and Joe sing a less well known, more difficult version of the Stabat Mater, in which there is a new melody every two verses.Considered by many to be one of the greatest Latin hymns ever written, the Stabat Mater Dolorosa tells the story of the sorrows of Mary during her Son's passion, and puts the singer in the position of begging to accompany her in those sorrows. Written in the 13th century, likely either by Pope Innocent the III or by a Fransiscan Friar: Jacopo da Todi. He's an interesting fellow, who was a very wealthy and successful lawyer, got a reputation for being worldly and greedy, married a pious woman who dedicated her life to penance and prayer for her wicked husband. When she died, Jacopo discovered that she had been wearing a hair-shirt at the time of her death, and he realized it was for his sake. He gave up all his earthly possesions, and joined the Fransiscans and was one of the more…Fransiscan of them…doing all kinds of weird things like crawling around the piazza wearing a saddle, and showing up to his brothers wedding tarred and feathered. The Stabat Mater is actually one of a pair of hymns that he wrote to the Blessed Mother. The other was almost lost to history, but was rediscovered in the 18th century: Stabat Mater Speciosa – which sings of the birth of Jesus in the same style that the Dolorosa sings of His Passion: from the perspective of Mary, and begging to be admitted to her great joy just as in the Dolorosa we beg to be joined to her great sorrow. At the Cross her station keeping, Stood the mournful Mother weeping, Close to Jesus to the last:Through her heart, his sorrow sharing, All his bitter anguish bearing, now at length the sword has pass'd.Oh, how sad and sore distress'd Was that Mother highly blest Of the sole-begotten One!Christ above in torment hangs; She beneath beholds the pangs Of her dying glorious Son.Is there one who would not weep, Whelm'd in miseries so deep, Christ's dear Mother to behold? Can the human heart refrain From partaking in her pain, In that Mother's pain untold?Bruis'd, derided, curs'd, defil'd, She beheld her tender Child All with bloody scourges rent; For the sins of his own nation, Saw Him hang in desolation, Till His Spirit forth He sent. O thou Mother! fount of love! Touch my spirit from above, Make my heart with thine accord:Make me feel as thou hast felt; Make my soul to glow and melt With the love of Christ my Lord.Holy Mother! pierce me through; In my heart each wound renew Of my Saviour crucified:Let me share with thee His pain, Who for all my sins was slain, Who for me in torments died.Let me mingle tears with thee, Mourning Him who mourn'd for me, All the days that I may live:By the Cross with thee to stay; There with thee to weep and pray; Is all I ask of thee to give.Virgin of all virgins blest!, Listen to my fond request: Let me share thy grief divine;Let me, to my latest breath, In my body bear the death Of that dying Son of thine.Wounded with his every wound, Steep my soul till it hath swoon'd, In His very blood away;Be to me, O Virgin, nigh, Lest in flames I burn and die, In his awful Judgment day.Christ, when Thou shalt call me hence, Be Thy Mother my defence, Be Thy Cross my victory; While my body here decays, May my soul thy goodness praise, Safe in Paradise with Thee.

Indie Film Director Skyler Lawson joins JUST TALKING to promote his latest film, Whelm. When indie directors set their minds to make a movie they pull all cards and favors—“it's like trying to take the SAT's while riding a bull!” Skyler went back to his home town in Indiana, gathered local community support, networked talent and researched 1930's celebrity bank robber legends to create the film Whelm. Whelm shot on 35mm film is beautiful cinematography. It embraces the “warmth of the Midwest” with a great sense of humor—it's a unique take on the Great Depression crime lore. Watch Whelm streaming on Amazon Prime https://www.amazon.com/Whelm-Delil-Baran/dp/B098TVWBMN. Like many music artists working remotely over the past year during the pandemic, the band used online tools to produce music with top players in Nashville—sending ideas back and forth till the magic happens. Most if not all country bands are expected to have guitarists but Hurricane Highway went full circle with their track Sha La La featuring a ukulele! A testament to Hurricane Highway's place in country music is their odd cover track of Lionel Richie's—Dancing on the Ceiling “It's just a crackin song.” Listen and you'll see why the people love it! Coming from a small town in Ireland, Ronan had always desired to be an actor and at the age of 20 decided to leave everything behind and pursue it. In 2014 he then moved to New York City to become a full-time student at the renowned Herbert Berghof Acting Studios in Manhattan. Some accomplishments since moving to New York include winning best short play at the 2017 New York Theatre Festival and also performing in the feature movie ‘Whelm’ which won best picture at the Burbank International Film Festival this year. It was in 2017 that Ronan first came across Sadhguru online and from then on Sadhguru’s teachings and wisdom have been a constant companion. He completed Inner Engineering in January 2019 and since then has only evolved his connection to Sadhguru. He volunteers regularly with Isha New York and would love for Sadhguru to become a mainstream figure like the biggest of celebrities in the world today.

Delil Baran and Dylan Grunn join us spontaneously while visiting Indianapolis for the world premier of their movie, "Whelm." Arriving with their producer/ director/ writer Skyler Lawson (our immediately preceding interview), they chose to share about their craft, "living in the present," dealing with a persistently unknown future, and about their personal lives and studies.
Skyler Lawson released his first feature-length film, Whelm, at The Heartland International Film Festival. In this compelling interview, he talks about raising money, motivating cast and crew, the charm of a movie set in 1933 in his home town, Wabash, Indiana, and his goals for future productions. Listeners will want to tune in to the next published interview with two of his actor/colleagues.
Today we talk about work life balance and what it actually means in this day and age. Is it a myth and if not how do we go about achieving it? Great for anyone who feels like they’re getting over whelmed and struggling to keep up with the pace of life or is thinking about hitting the reset button.
Overwhelm can get the best of us. In fact, too many teachers are leaving the profession due to their plates being full for far too long. When you learn how to recognize overwhelm before it overcomes you, you can begin to hack away at your schedule so that you conserve energy and happiness for what matters most- teaching. Tune in to hear 5 tips and get access to an amazing opportunity for teachers struggling to beat the overwhelm.
