Lee Woodruff's life reads like fiction — a college meet-not-quite-cute with her future husband Bob, a front-row seat to the Tiananmen Square crackdown that redirected Bob's entire career, his meteoric rise to co-anchor of ABC's World News Tonight, and then, just weeks into that dream job, a roadside bomb in Iraq that nearly killed him.  In this conversation, Lee shares how she got the call while at Disney World with their four kids, the surreal days that followed, and the 36-day coma that ended with Bob speaking Mandarin and French before he could speak English again. She opens up about "ambiguous loss" — the complicated grief of loving someone who survived but changed — and the "four F's" (family, friends, funny, faith) that got her through. Lee also talks candidly about the Bob Woodruff Foundation, which has now raised more than $80 million for veterans and military families, and about her own definition of optimism: not the absence of hard days, but the belief that tomorrow can be better.     Chapters:  00:31 The Woodruff Story: Love and Triumph 02:08 A Life of Accomplishments 04:42 The Impact of Tiananmen Square 08:31 The Shocking News 12:14 The Four F's: Coping Mechanisms 13:16 The Birth of the Bob Woodruff Foundation 16:03 Finding Strength in Adversity 19:14 Bob's Remarkable Recovery 22:05 Navigating Complicated Grief 25:57 The Pursuit of Happiness 29:02 The Foundation's Humble Beginnings 30:31 Innovative Solutions for Veterans 32:06 Mobilizing Awareness Through Personal Experience 33:05 Navigating Caregiving and Grief 35:30 The Journey of Optimism 37:11 The Impact on Family: Growing Through Adversity 40:49 Looking Ahead: New Ventures and Aspirations

Good afternoon — August 10, 2026. Hosts Will Alimonos and Zach Bishop return for a wide-ranging episode of Little Column A, Little Column B, opening with the latest developments in the Kawhi Leonard/Aspiration saga. The pair break down Pablo Torre's new reporting, including another alleged no-show deal, connections between the Aspiration revelations and a scoreboard manufacturer linked to the Clippers, and what the growing scandal could mean for Kawhi, the Clippers and the NBA. They debate when the league will finally make a decision, what an appropriate punishment would look like, who actually gets hurt by potential penalties, and whether the story will ultimately result in meaningful consequences. Then it's officially football season. Will and Zach begin their NFL division previews with the NFC North, evaluating the Lions, Bears, Packers and Vikings. They look at strength of schedule, defensive concerns, injuries and each team's path to winning the division. The conversation also turns to fantasy football, including concerns about Justin Jefferson's value and potential draft targets across the division. The AFC North is next, with Baltimore setting the standard and Cincinnati remaining an intriguing challenger despite questions about its defense. Will and Zach debate Lamar Jackson versus Derrick Henry from a fantasy perspective, Pittsburgh's uncertain direction, Cleveland's chaotic quarterback situation and which teams could surprise or disappoint. They finish the division with their favorite fantasy targets, avoids and predictions. Rounding out the episode are lighter but memorable stories, including Doc Rivers' Hall of Fame induction and a discussion about coaching legacies; Akron football's wild season-ticket promotion that allows a fan to help script the team's opening offensive possession; and the University of Michigan experimenting with a first-semester pass/no-pass system for freshmen. Will and Zach mix NFL predictions, fantasy advice, NBA controversy and the usual collection of strange stories before looking ahead to next week's AFC and NFC East previews. Five deep tonight — Grant, Tim Parker, David Bloom, Mykell Mathieu and E Lamb — and the Clippers news is grim. Baxter Holmes of ESPN reports the Aspiration investigation could bleed into 2027, and Grant has had it: as he puts it, it's the year 2085, Bronny James Jr. the Second is in the league, and the investigation still isn't concluded. He torches the recycled reporting cycle — everyone re-breaking that the Raptors don't want the penalties, which the show covered three weeks ago — while E Lamb plays the adult in the room and lays out the actual endgame nobody else is explaining: findings, the Clippers' right to push back, then arbitration or court. His warning from July 4 stands — the longer this lingers, the worse it gets — and if it isn't concluded by the trade deadline, there is no trade. Mykell just feels bad for Toronto, where Kawhi was supposed to retire, and for Brandon Ingram, stuck on a team that already tried to ship him out. Before the doom: Luka Doncic is flying the ENTIRE Lakers roster to Slovenia on his own dime for a four-day August mini-camp, and the panel splits on what it means — Mykell calls it everything the last era never gave the fans, E Lamb contrasts it with a certain someone working out in another team's facility, Tim (crediting the "vanilla Lakers") says team bonding doesn't move a seed, and the crew fights over what year one of solo Luka has to look like: Western Conference Finals or bust? Plus Deebo Samuel returns to the Niners with Ricky Pearsall likely out long-term, Tim declares the Niners cooked while Grant — the self-described biggest Niners hater alive — explains why the cockroach always survives, and E Lamb announces the TST Fantasy Football League. Xfinity Mobile Arena is MSG now, Broad Street is Broadway, and anybody who lived through the process — Ish Smith, Evan Turner, Thad Young, Henry Sims — has earned this. John pours cold water: he's 42, the best player on the roster is Jaylen Brown, and nobody on that team knows this offense yet. Then John opens the curtain on something fans never see — what an NBA practice actually looks like after training camp ends, why teams won't let you watch it, and why LeBron will not take a full practice rep all season. From there it's a full autopsy of the fit: does Tyrese Maxey get unleashed or buried at number three on the call sheet, is this 1988 Magic or 1991 Magic, and the one argument that finally scares Tim — every champion is a top-12 defense, and this team can't guard anybody. Plus Tim's line in the sand ("no Eastern Conference Finals and LeBron feels a wrath he hasn't felt since The Decision"), the East hierarchy sorted into regular-season good versus playoff good, Charlotte as the dark horse, and the Anthony Simons war that will not die. Before the break, a Kawhi update: a third company has entered the Aspiration investigation, ESPN reports it could bleed into 2027, and John explains why — the league isn't investigating anymore, it's negotiating the punishment behind closed doors. John opens the show with a tribute to his friend and former 1090 colleague Billy Ray Smith Jr., who died Wednesday at 64. The post-show takes on WNBA All-Star weekend, where the off-court coverage swallowed the basketball, and closes with news: the TST Podcast Network is officially happening. New episodes drop nightly. What Does It Mean to Be Human? Ep 4: Dream Forward, Remember Back

In a world racing toward smarter machines, empathy speakers and authors Rob Volpe and Maria Ross get curious in this limited subseries about what only humans can feel, do, and be — and why that's our greatest competitive advantage. Enjoy this limited subseries here on The Empathy Edge. Aspiration, Hope, Free Will & the Future-Oriented MindHumans don't just live in the present. We imagine futures that don't exist yet, then try to build them, and we do it using the same neural machinery that lets us remember our past.Maria Ross and Rob Volpe explore what psychologist Endel Tulving called mental time travel: the brain's unique ability to simulate scenarios that haven't happened using a network that overlaps almost entirely with episodic memory. We can't dream forward if we can't look back. Yet, our memories can be unreliable, causing us to build narratives around what actually happened or how it impacted us. Are we the only species who can do this? That sets up the harder question: do we actually choose, or does it just feel like we do?Finally, we discuss the difference between hope and optimism. When humans are at their best, they describe aspiration, vision, and forward motion, but humans in survival mode, who cannot access hope or aspiration, are equally human. What does that tell us about how fragile, and how earned, this superpower really is?To access the episode transcript, go to www.TheEmpathyEdge.com and search by episode title. 0:00 ... Ross hello and welcome .... introduces panel, and dedicates show #258 to "B-Ball Paul" Reed, who was the #58 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. 0:50 ... Lu Dort is traded from OKC to the Atlanta Hawks in a three team deal ... the guys discuss how Dort's grit and persistence will be a great asset to the Hawks' defensive schemes.  World B wonders if this is the beginning of a new era in OKC where players are traded for financial reasons.  Ross agrees and feels this was a salary dump by the Thunder. 7:25 ... Bruce is really shocked at how soon the Hawks gave up on Zachary Risacher who was the #1 overall pick in 2024, an All Rookie first teamer in 2025, and is only 21 years old.  Ross and World B also comment on how Risacher's role was reduced in his second season. 11:52 ... LeBron James' indecision in choosing his next team is now causing Commissioner Adam Silver to level some sharp comments about how King James is holding up a lot of the decisions the league needs to make because they need to know where he will be playing.  Bruce feels LeBron is putting his ego ahead of the league and it may come back to haunt him if he pursues his ownership aspirations in the future.  World B agrees that it's an ego thing for LeBron and Ross feels he should finish his career in Cleveland. 15:57 ... The Heat officially introduced Giannis Antetokounpo last week and while they will need more outside shooting, there are some veterans out there like DeMar DeRozan and Russell Westbrook who might fit into Miami's "win now" plans in spite of them not being long range shooters.   Ross liked that Giannis is changing his number from 34 to 7 and leaving 34 behind in Milwaukee. 21:25 .... Will Jonathan Kuminga ever find a team?  The whole situation is bizarre due to his status as an "unrestricted" free agent who still needs to be in a sign and trade deal in order to find a new team since only teams under the cap can sign him without doing a sign and trade. 26:47 ... Yaxel Lendebourg led the Warriors to the Summer League championship and talked serious smack to the Grizzlies, the team the Dubs beat in the championship game.  Bruce was so inspired that he game Yaxel a nickname: "Yakkin' Yaxel."   Ross pointed out that Yaxel and Draymond Green have been talking trash to each other on Dray's podcast so the rookie is learning from the master. 30:33 ... Speaking of the Warriors, Stephen Curry has become the first active player to have a major exhibit at the Basketball Hall of Fame due to the way he revolutionized the NBA with his shooting skills.  World B and Ross feel it is well-deserved. 33:46 ... Bruce promotes the Hoop Hall Hangout session he will be hosting with Spurs legend Bruce Bowen on August 5th at the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. 35:00 ... The guys examine the crazy contract Gary Trent Junior signed with the Bucks and how the league is investigating the Bucks for salary cap circumvention. 37:04 .... The Kawhi Leonard trade from the Clippers to the Raptors is on hold due to the NBA investigating the endorsement deal Leonard signed with Aspiration for $28 million last year.  Ross feels for the others involved in the trade because their lives and careers are being negatively impacted by the freezing of the transaction. 40:21 ... Bruce shares a story on Keaton Wagler of the Clippers and how he led the team in a bonding experience in Las Vegas where they went to an escape room and his experience in previous escape room visits helped him guide the team to a succesful escape. 41:56 ... Ross wraps the show and says goodbye. TRT 42:08             Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. She watched residents cry alone on the floor, calls for help go unanswered, and a client ask her point blank, "Am I gonna die today?" That first shift as a professional caregiver didn't just break Nicole Becerra's heart. It gave her a mission. Instead of accepting that this was just how senior care worked, she asked a different question: what if it didn't have to be this way? In this episode, Nicole shares how she went from sitting bedside with dementia patients to acquiring raw land, navigating septic and zoning laws, and securing an SBA loan to build Mosaic Memory Care, a 16 room luxury memory care mansion in the Texas Hill Country. She breaks down what it actually took to move from caregiver to developer with zero real estate background: interviewing contractors until she found ones who would explain things in plain language, commissioning third party feasibility studies for her bank, and financing the entire project herself and her husband rather than bringing on outside investors. She also opens up about Builders of Care, the nonprofit she founded to help families afford quality senior care and to help other small operators get the capital they need to build homes like hers. This episode is for real estate investors looking at senior housing and memory care as an emerging niche, anyone weighing land development for the first time, and listeners who have watched a parent or grandparent struggle to get real dignity in a care facility. With an aging population and booming Hill Country demographics, Nicole makes the case that small, intimate memory care homes are one of the most overlooked and needed opportunities in real estate right now. 5 Powerful Takeaways Learn how to structure a memory care real estate deal from raw land purchase through SBA financing, including how a land loan gets wrapped into a construction loan. Discover why septic and zoning rules can dictate your entire site plan, and how Nicole turned a 14 acre parcel into two 16 room luxury homes with room for walking paths and a courtyard. Get a real playbook for building trust with contractors and city officials as a newcomer, including the exact question to ask when you're in over your head. Understand how a nonprofit arm like Builders of Care can create scholarships and grants that make quality senior care and small operator development more financially accessible. Hear why financing a project entirely with personal savings and a bank loan, without outside investors, can be a deliberate strategy for proving a concept before scaling. 00:00 Show Intro 01:00 Cash on Cash Return 03:24 Meet Nicole Becerra 05:23 Caregiving Wake Up Call 09:32 Luxury Memory Care 11:31 Builders of Care Nonprofit 12:40 Land and Zoning Hurdles 16:57 Designing the Neighborhood 19:08 Mosaic Name Meaning 20:14 Newbie Advantage 21:31 Contractors and Communication 22:43 SBA Loan Process 24:12 Funding the Build 25:23 Control Over Investors 27:06 Builders of Care Mission 28:46 Timeline and Next Steps 31:06 Being Mortal Insights 34:26 Advice and Action 35:53 Drive and Aspirations 39:08 Systems and Delegation 40:53 Success and Where to Find Nicole 42:31 Final Thanks and Sign-Off About the Guest Nicole Becerra spent years as a frontline professional caregiver before deciding the industry needed to be rebuilt from the ground up. You might remember Katryn from episode 292, where we dove deep into the behavioral blueprint for inclusion. Well, a lot can happen in a year—or in our current case, since the wild ride of the 2026 election—and the DEI landscape is shifting beneath our feet. I'll admit, when I first started this work ten years ago, I thought we could just shout from the rooftops that inclusion matters and everyone would just magically get it. But as we look at the headlines today, it's clear that "shiny object syndrome" has left us with a lot of noise and not enough real, systemic change. Katryn and I sit down to unpack what global leaders are actually doing right now to push past the performative and get to the heart of what makes workplaces genuinely fair. Key Themes from the Conversation Moving from Noise to Systemic Change. Organizations frequently focus on highly public, performative declarations of inclusivity rather than restructuring the underlying processes that perpetuate bias. "Organizations were doing a lot of the shiny stuff... doing what we would call noisy things, right? Proclaiming, saying, being public... but obviously that not necessarily translating to real-world change." — Katryn Wright The Problem with Unconscious Bias Training. Treating broad, one-size-fits-all training modules as a standalone solution is ineffective and can create artificial metrics that trigger cultural backlash. "An awful amount of money was spent on something that the science shows is... ineffective at best, counterproductive at worst." — Katryn Wright Inclusion as an Aspiration, Not a Default Value. Framing inclusion as a predefined company value mistakenly implies that the work is already complete, whereas framing it as an ongoing aspiration invites employees to actively participate in closing the gap. "When we talk about inclusion as a value, it is not as effective as when we talk about inclusion as an aspirational goal... it suggests that we've been missing a trick to be bringing people on as much as we can." — Katryn Wright Precision and Data Science in Workplace Fairness. True progress requires identifying the exact inflection points in employee experiences—like hiring, promotion, and retention stages—where disparities emerge, and applying targeted behavioral interventions. "Let's go and be as precise as possible about changing behavior in that exact situation... when we are able to be as precise as possible about which specific behaviors need to change, we can get to those outcomes." — Katryn Wright Actionable Takeaway for Listeners Stop trying to de-bias your entire team all at once with sweeping declarations. Instead, pick one specific process in your daily workflow—whether it's how you audit resumes, run performance reviews, or distribute project assignments—and analyze the data to find where the equity gaps lie. Designing small, targeted interventions at precise moments is how real cultural evolution happens. Follow Katryn at https://www.morethannow.co.uk/

On this episode of Conduct Detrimental: THE Sports Law Podcast, Dan Lust (@SportsLawLust) and Mike Kravchenko (Watch on YouTube) are back for the second straight week — with three breaking stories that forced a last-minute rewrite of the rundown. The episode opens with the Kawhi Leonard trade to Toronto, which is suddenly on hold indefinitely while the NBA's ten-month Aspiration investigation drags on. Dan and Mike unpack the alleged no-show marketing deal, why the Raptors would have almost certainly checked with the league before agreeing to a massive trade involving Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, and multiple first-round picks — and why "on hold" with no timeline is such a bizarre posture. Dan draws the parallel to Joe Smith and the Timberwolves, the last true blatant salary-cap circumvention case, and explains why draft-pick forfeiture may be exactly what's creating the hesitancy. From there, the duo turns to Balogun and the red card that wasn't. Dan and Mike break down the crucial distinction most outlets missed — the red card was never overturned, the suspension was reversed — and what it means that FIFA dusted off a rule under apparent pressure from a sitting U.S. president. Mike explains why Gianni Infantino's public support of Trump and the FIFA Peace Prize make this less surprising than it looks, while Dan argues Belgium came out looking worse and points to the Argentina–Egypt disallowed goal as the truly egregious officiating story of the tournament.Dan and Mike then dig into the criminal charges against former Bucknell strength and conditioning coach Mark Kulbis following the 2024 death of freshman CJ Dickey Jr. Mike lays out the timeline and the sickle-cell trait aggravator, then Dan pulls up Pennsylvania's hazing statute and reads the limitation in Section 2802, statutory-interpretation on whether up-downs and burpees can be a felony. The pair then hits the Brendan Sorsby saga as the NCAA opens a formal inquiry into Cincinnati over what the program knew and when. Followed by the Ohio injunction against the NCAA's new five-year eligibility rule, where Dan explains why a system that rewards whoever can reach a friendly local judge is a bad system for everyone. The episode closes with Paige Shiver's Freedom of Information Act lawsuit against the University of Michigan, seeking internal communications, the outside law firm's investigative file, and answers about when Michigan actually knew about the Sherrone Moore relationship. Plus: Dan's Europe futures ticket, a 46-to-1 Michigan basketball bet, and a Conor McGregor–Max Holloway prediction you have about 48 hours to act on. Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie G. Bunch III has spent a lifetime thinking about how history gets told. Before becoming the head of the Smithsonian, he was a curator, someone whose job is deciding which stories, people, and objects help us make sense of ourselves. So as America approaches its 250th birthday, Lizzie wanted to know: if you had to tell the story of the United States through just a handful of things, where would you begin? In this special episode, Secretary Bunch puts his curator hat back on to lead Lizzie through American Aspirations, a new exhibition he co-curated. Starting with the desk on which the Declaration of Independence was drafted, they get up close with some of the nation's most treasured objects: Abraham Lincoln campaign swag, Amelia Earhart's flight suit, Thomas Edison's light bulb, and even a miniature Statue of Liberty (which is still pretty big!). What can these objects reveal about a nation still striving to become its best self?Guest: Lonnie G.
