The vast majority of multifamily syndicators don't stop with one property. And with each new deal, we start the stressful process of raising money all over again. But it doesn't have to be that way! So, how does it work to raise capital for multiple deals through a fund? Joe Fairless is the Cofounder and Partner at Ashcroft Capital, a multifamily firm that invests in 200-plus-unit value-add deals. The Ashcroft team has a portfolio of 38 properties, and in February of 2021, they pivoted from raising money for individual deals to raising capital through funds. On this episode of Financial Freedom with Real Estate Investing, Joe joins me (and the attendees of Deal Maker Live) to discuss the pros and cons of raising money through a fund. He explains the benefit of being able to spread out your capital raise over time, bring on investors whenever they're ready, and comingle money among deals. Listen in for insight on how Ashcroft structures its funds and find out if YOU'RE ready to start raising money for multifamily through a fund! In some ways, the Bayh-Dole Act saved the United States, and our guest on today's show played a key role in its adoption. Joe Allen was part of the US Senate Judiciary Committee for Birch Bayh, the senator whose name makes up one part of the Act which was deemed one of the most inspired pieces of legislation that America had seen in half a century.  The intention of the Act was to foster R&D partnerships between universities and US industry in order to put an end to the government's practice of spending billions of dollars on research and then never commercializing it. In today's episode, Joe shares why the Act was so transformative, as well as the tumultuous journey he and his team went on to get it passed, which, looking back, seems like a miracle.   Joe's impressive career doesn't end there, and you will also hear about what he achieved in his roles as Executive Director of Intellectual Property Owners Inc., the Director of the Office of Technology Commercialization, the Vice President of the NTCC, the co-founder of the Entrepreneurial Technology Apprentice Program, and now as the owner of Joseph Allen and Associates and Executive Director of the Bayh-Dole Coalition.   In This Episode: [00:51] A rundown of the colorful professional life of today's guest, Joe Allen. [16:06] The rocky road to adoption of Bayh-Dole Act.    [18:05] Joe shares what happened in the final moments of getting the Bayh-Dole Act passed.  [23:00] Two questions that Joe was asked just before the bill was cleared.   [24:16] How Joe became involved with the IPO, and the work that he did there. Joe Keohane has been meeting strangers for decades. As an accomplished journalist and editor, Joe has made a career out of listening to people he doesn't know and engaging with their stories. But as the world reemerges from the COVID-19 pandemic, loneliness is on the rise, and strangers feel more strange than maybe ever before. Is there still something to be gained from expanding our social circles and interacting with strangers after 18 months of isolation? Joe sure thinks so.    On this episode of The Sidewalk Talk podcast, Traci sits down with Joe to talk about his brand new book, The Power of Strangers. Together the two talk about the impact listening to strangers has on us, the magic of meeting someone new, and how to cultivate a healthy curiosity towards others in an effort to combat loneliness. There may never be a more perfect time for this conversation as we relearn how to connect with those around us.    Episode Timeline:  [00:07] Intro  [02:43] Meet Joe  [07:39] Why Joe wrote The Power of Strangers   [16:40] The impact listening to strangers has on us  [21:55] The magic of meeting strangers  [27:20] What surprised Joe in his research  [36:18] Loneliness after the pandemic  [42:49] Traci and Joe's hospitality stories   [47:03] Joe's word for you  [49:45] Outro  Resources Mentioned:  The Power of Strangers: The benefits of connecting in a suspicious world  Standout Quotes:   “It really doesn't take that much for people to feel comfortable with you. So many of us got bitten by the outdoor gardening bug last year and learned there is no better way to connect with the food we eat.. then by growing it. My passion for growing edible plants has grown, like my space has. My first garden was a tiny box full of herbs and one tomato plant on our tiny balcony three years ago, and since then, the balcony containers grew, and now I’m excited to be in our first home with acres to farm this summer. Starting these edible plants from seed has been a bit intimidating, but in my efforts to continue growing as a plant parent, I’m ready to take the plunge and dive in. Starting from seed offers us the ability to be in control of the varieties we grow, plan in advance and save lots of money in the long run. My dear friend and mentor Joe Lamp’l- the "joe behind joe gardener" is the king of organic gardening and has an amazing seed starting course launching this week and was kind enough to stop by and give us the inside scoop on seed starting basics, and inspire us to deepen our curiosity about where food comes from and empower us to grow it ourselves. My guest today is Joseph Henrich, a professor at Harvard and an expert on the evolution of human cooperation and culture. I am a big fan of his book, "The Secret of Our Success" and he just published a new one called the Weirdest People in the World about people who fall under the acronym WEIRD: Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic. Through his research, he explains culture's role in evolution. He shows how evolutionary theory can help us learn, innovate, and share knowledge. We begin this episode by talking about the role big Gods play in cultural evolution. Then we talk about the time Joe spent living with small-scale societies in rural Peru and Fiji. He talks about how he learns the language, plans the trips, and assimilates into societies so he can study them. Towards the end of the podcast, we talk about what economists can learn from anthropologists and the evolution of attraction. My favorite part of the conversation was learning about the tradeoffs between having an open or closed society, and how those factors contribute to innovation. Please enjoy my conversation with Joseph Henrich. ____________________________ Show Notes 2:06 - How the role of God has evolved over time and why bigger and bigger Gods have become the norm. 4:50 - Why acting as a third party for people made Gods culturally and socially so much more important. 8:36 - Marriage across cultures and religions and why they diverge sometimes wildly from what Western culture considers "normal". 13:44 - Why many religious restrictions that created the Western norm of a nuclear family also set up the stage for heightened individualism. 16:58 - How and why social safety nets transitioned from kin-based institutions to the states and governments. 18:46 - What surprising similarities and differences Joe saw between Americans and the Machiguenga of the Peruvian Amazon. 22:22 - The role of humor in enforcing social norms, why Joe thinks it is absolutely universal, and the other universal ways trust is built-in communities. 28:35 - How narcotics and psychedelics are utilized in different cultures and the way their roles differ. 31:20 - Why cultural imitation does not always yield positive outcomes. 33:11 - How the introduction of agriculture changed family relationships and culture. 39:36 - The biggest takeaways Joe got from Guns, Germs, and Steel. 43:28 - Why Joe believes that religion is innate in human beings. 50:31 - The possible implications of losing rituals that for millennia have brought families and clans closer together. 52:24 - What the clock and a universal time have done to human psychology. 1:01:16 - What the collective brain is and why it is so prevalent throughout creative booms in history. 1:04:55 - How the proliferation of information helps and hurts creativity, and why the internet hasn't had the impact people thought it would. 1:08:26 - How information is affected by biases and manipulation and why humans are so susceptible to them. 1:11:39 - How the technology, institutions, and tools we use affect the way that we think. 1:15:12 - Why learning disabilities should not be looked at as purely negative and the benefits that cognitive diversity brings to humanity. 1:19:00 - The way gossip in a society helps define the collective philosophy of its people. 1:21:07 - How imitative education is currently at its peak and what doors it opens for people around the world. 1:24:36 - Why rituals and multiple gods were so common in the past and are so uncommon now. 1:28:40 - How Jon would alter the current research practices in the social sciences on "WEIRD" people and why. 1:31:39 - Why certain assumptions about humans are actually specific to a region or population, and why they don't represent humanity as a whole. 1:35:10 - Why the top-down lecture model is not serving education as well as it should, and why it shouldn't be replaced completely by Youtube. 1:39:20 - The selective physical and cultural evolution of certain populations and why it happens the way it does. 1:42:12 - What Jon finds to be the most interesting elements of culture to study and why. 1:45:33 - Why Jon's aerospace engineering degree is so valuable in his anthropology career. 1:47:41 - The problem with focusing solely on models in research and studies. 1:53:20 - Why humanity seems to be stagnating in intelligence but rocketing upward in cultural development.

Joe Gerstandt is a speaker, author, and advisor bringing greater clarity, action, and impact to organizational diversity and inclusion efforts. Joe has worked with Fortune 100 corporations, small non-profits, government entities, and everything in between. He speaks at numerous conferences and summits and is a featured contributor for the Workforce Diversity Network Expert Forum. His insights have been published in Diversity Best Practices, Diversity Executive, HR Executive, numerous other print and on-line journals, and he co-authored the book Social Gravity: Harnessing the Natural Laws of Relationships. Joe has also served on the Intersectional Culture and Diversity Advisory (ICD) Council for the social networking platform, Twitter, and currently the board of directors for the Tri-Faith Initiative, which brings together in permanent residency a synagogue, church, mosque, and interfaith center on one 38-acre campus in the middle of America’s heartland. Joe grew up on a family farm in NW Iowa, served four years in the United States Marine Corps, including participation in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, attended Iowa State University and then spent 6 years working in management and business development for technology and communication companies. He then made a career change and went to work for a grassroots non-profit organization, and this is where he found himself drawn to issues related to diversity and inclusion and then became actively involved in that work. Today, Joe believes that we can ill afford to continue applying a 20th century approach to an increasingly critical set of 21st century issues. A strong advocate for resetting the diversity and inclusion conversation, Joe sees diversity and inclusion as poorly understood and often misunderstood. What you’ll learn about in this episode: How Joe came to work in diversity, equity and inclusion through working in the nonprofit sector What factors Joe believes have contributed to our slowed progress in diversity, equity, and inclusion, and why leaders often see confuse this work with compliance issues Why Joe isn’t a fan of best practices since organizations and their needs vary so greatly from each other Why organizations often forget that inclusion is separate from diversity and often don’t understand why inclusion matters What major challenges organizations are facing today, and why the global pandemic is having a major impact on diversity and inclusion Why our society is more polarized than ever, and why organizations must work for clarity on the behavioral component of the issue Why diversity, equity, and inclusion within organizations isn’t inherently partisan or political and why organizations must set a standard of expected behaviors What Joe hopes we will be doing differently in this work ten years from now, and why organizations who are doing the work now are laying the foundation for a strong future What advice Joe would offer to new practitioners in this space, and why getting clear on why the work is important to you matters Why you should define and work toward the unique contribution you can make within the realm of diversity, equity and inclusion Additional resources: Website: www.joegerstandt.com LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/joegerstandt/ Twitter: @joegerstandt

How much trash do you create? Professor Joshua Spodek tells Joe De Sena he had been eating packaged food with every meal of his life. One day he decided to take responsibility for his own mess. With every meal, everything we buy from stores, everything we order- we throw something away, and every item of waste you have ever “gotten rid of” still exists in some form, somewhere. Spodek calls Joe De Sena out on his own consumption - and Joe responds. Spodek, a leadership professor at NYU, has embarked on a journey to lighten his impact on the planet by creating as minimal garbage as possible. It has meant, among other things, that at the supermarket he is buying whole fruits and vegetables because everything else has packaging. The added benefit - a more healthy diet. As endurance athletes, we have ambitious fitness goals. But few of us stop to consider what’s driving us or exactly WHY we chose a particular target. Fewer still understand how our current habits fit into the bigger picture around long-term health and wellbeing. What if we quit using the sweaty and sore scale—and started measuring our success in terms of overall health and happiness? Joe DiStefano is a global authority in the realm of optimizing wellness and longevity while improving fitness and sports performance. After a traumatic brain injury, Joe dedicated his life to finding health again, and the experience informs his holistic approach to training and coaching some of the world’s top athletes. Did you know.. ..a baby needs 30g of fat per day to support brain development, hormone regulation and build the immune system? Yet, sadly, nearly all modern baby food doesn't even come close to touching this daily requirement and furthermore, is chock full of preservatives, added sugars, non-organic, GMO ingredients and other toxins and additives that harm a baby's muscular and skeletal growth, cognitive development, immune system and much more. So I was incredibly pleased when I discovered a baby food I could finally get behind. As a father, nutritionist and health consultant, I can tell you with confidence that , designed and formulated by my guests on today's show - Joe and Serenity Carr - is, bar none, the only packaged baby food I would ever recommend any parent feed to their precious child. As a matter of fact, this stuff is so dangerously tasty that I suspect you as a parent may become addicted to it too. It is wonderfully refreshing to finally see a company doing things right when it comes to perfectly portioned ingredients tailored to the exact needs of a growing human being. I can't recommend this stuff highly enough. Serenity Carr, co-founder and CEO of , is on a mission to promote wellness starting with the first bite. Formerly employed in tech and logistics, Serenity left her job to pursue her passion of health coaching where she helped clients achieve their personal health goals. Having healed her digestive issues through a lifestyle diet change, Serenity is transforming the baby food industry by developing innovative nutrient dense products because every bite counts. Joe Carr, founder and President of , is a certified life coach and educator devoted to social justice activism. An autism activist and proponent of the Paleo diet, Joe works with other autistic adults and youth to help them harness their gifts and genuinely believes that food is medicine. He is also active with the ManKind Project helping men develop power with compassion. Joe Saul-Sehy: Making Finance Fun (EP.05)

Take the Long View

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 11, 2019 48:08

Joe Saul-Sehy was a financial planner for 19 years and has been an award-winning member of the financial media world for over a decade. But that’s a totally opposite direction from where he started, growing up in a household where talking about money was taboo. Like many families, his parents would shut down and send him and his siblings out of the room whenever any money talk came up. With nothing to change his course, the financially illiterate boy became a financially illiterate man, and when Joe faced an American Express table on his very first week in college, guess who fell into a predatory credit trap? A couple of lunches “on me” later (and a sweater that would make Duran Duran proud) and Joe was left with bad credit and a bill he had no idea how to settle. But painful as it was, that lesson awoke his passion for personal finance. And he followed that passion straight to his first job in finance, and he hasn’t looked back since. When talking finance, for many people the word brings up images of people in stuffy suits wagging a finger about being more responsible with your money. If you got that same image, you’ll throw that notion away once you listen to Joe. An amazing storyteller, Joe is the co-host of two well-loved financial podcasts: “Stacking Benjamins” and “Money with Friends.” Joe’s entrance into podcasting started, with his co-host OG, as two friends talking about finance, but being frustrated by their slow growth and low ranking. It wasn’t until Joe went to a podcasting conference that he came face-to-face with the reality that his show had the low ranking that it deserved and made the decision to become more professional. They redid their entire show, lost a third of their audience, but then came back better than ever, smashing records and winning awards. Joe attributes the show’s success to being deliberate about changing the podcast from being two guys trying to be funny, to being two comedians practicing their craft and making a comedy show about finance. Both co-hosts spent time in comedy training and put even more effort into producing the show: it takes them 5 weeks to put 1 episode together. Talk about commitment. Not wanting to become another Dave Ramsey or Suze Orman, they went in a completely different direction. With their philosophy that “If you don't think you’re learning, you’ll be much more open to learning” they’re reaping dividends.   Key Topics: Introducing Joe. [00:41] Why Joe still records “Stacking Benjamins” in a basement. [01:56] Joe’s first experience with the dangers of credit. [04:04] From podcast enthusiast to podcaster. [06:42] The road to Stacking Benjamins. [09:26] Taking a short-term loss for the long-term gain. [11:21] Getting serious about play. [13:04] Balancing practical guidance and light-hearted play. [14:15] Life lessons from DJing. [15:18] “Stacking Benjamin’s” most requested topics. [17:51]  Fighting the fee battle. [19:45] The drawback of compliance. [22:40] Differentiating between “Stacking Benjamins” and “Money with Friends”. [24:49] Moving away from comparison-based financial goals. [27:28] Taking the emotion out of money decisions. [30:13] Systems for financial independence. [31:21] Lean into being a contrarian. [35:02] The future of “Stacking Benjamins”. [37:05] Joe’s love of running. [39:15] The minibar story. What you’ll learn about in this episode: How Joe began his career as a truck driver, and how he recently transitioned to becoming a recruiter How Joe viewed his time as a driver as a “vacation” opportunity to explore the country and see new sights How Joe’s experience as a driver has informed his work as a recruiter and given him a better insight into common driver frustrations Why Bestway Express gives their drivers a gift basket containing snacks and other small gifts every month How Bestway’s communication differs from other carriers in Joe’s experience, and why those differences result in better retention numbers How Bestway uses Facebook for its communications, and how Facebook engages not just the drivers but the community at large Why Joe has found surprising success using Craigslist and radio advertising to promote his company What efforts Bestway is making to attract new drivers, including starting their own small school How changes in the industry such as e-logs are making major shifts in driver recruitment and retention Why trucking is often a thankless and impersonal job, and why Joe feels Bestway is overcoming that dehumanizing experience for drivers Additional resources: Website: https://bestwayexpress.com

On Monday, colleague Joe Carpenter and I penned a piece on this here blog talking about what defines success for the Gridiron Heels in the upcoming football season.  We came back to talk about it, because you can fit more words into a podcast than one would want to read in an article.  As the title indicates, the overarching theme of the podcast is how Carolina can ‘win’ the 2019 season on the field. Discussed:  Does Carolina need to qualify for a bowl game to continue its upward trajectory? Why Chad is a little bit more rosy in his appraisal of the football team coming off the two previous debacles. Why Joe’s biggest thing is taking back the state of North Carolina— something upon which the host and guest agree wholeheartedly. If the first four months of the calendar year are any indication, success should not have a limited application moving forward. As ALWAYS, keep the great comments coming because they are inspiring a lot of our work on the podcast through the dreary summer months. A great way to leave commentary is to log on to your podcasting app of choice, leave a five-star review, and have it read on-air so it is part of the public record and a potential topic for future pontification. This week Joe receives an email from a personal trainer who is frustrated with his clientele's lack of motivation and constant complaining. He wants to transition from working with unmotivated "general population" clients to self-motivated athletes - so he asks for Joe's advice. This leads to a classic "Joe D. rant" on the personal training industry. Topics of the rant include: Why Joe is embarrassed to call himself a "personal trainer"; The #1 mistake personal trainers make with new clients (and what they SHOULD be doing instead); How to get your clients excited about training with you; The difference between "working out" vs "training"; Consistency vs Intensity; The importance of getting into a "flow state" when training...and Much MORE! Summary Co-hosts Joe and Lauren were so busy focusing on Stroke Awareness Month in May that they didn't get a chance to touch on the fact that May was also Mental Health Awareness Month so they're diving into discussing it in this week's episode. They both talk about their personal struggles with mental health as well as more about Joe's stroke recovery journey and how it affects him mentally. Topics Discussed in this Episode May was Mental Health Awareness Month Joe had a weird week after seeing photos from his time in the hospital. He talks about dealing with the emotions it brought up and how his stroke community helped him get through it. Why Joe describes himself as crazy - the chaos and overwhelmed feelings make him feel that way. Joe's occupational therapist, Kaley, has been one of the most important pieces of Joe's recovery Joe feels like Morph from X-Men - he feels like himself, but he's not quite himself. Lauren said that Joe is like the elves that Melcor/Morgoth kidnapped and corrupted to make the Orcs. Joe talks about his journey with his therapist. Joe used to keep all his feelings inside and it eventually affected his health and contributed to causing his stroke. Joe's mental health has improved a lot post stroke. Memory issues make him feel impatient with himself. Doesn't always know who he is like he's walking in someone else's skin. Taking steps back on the journey to recovery is ok because it's a learning opportunity. Joe talks about how Lauren has really helped him with his recovery. It feels weird after a brain injury because you're searching to find your purpose. This reminds Joe of an android character in the DC Animated Universe (A.M.A.Z.O.) who doesn't understand his purpose or Butter Robot on Rick and Morty who didn't know his purpose and then was sad when he found out it was just to spread butter. Joe and Lauren love horrible movies like Biker Boys, Demolition Man, Volcano, Dante's Peak, Armagedon, Deep Impact plus Hunt For Red October and Blade Joe processes having had a stroke and his mental health through humor. Joe's gratitude to his stroke survivor community. They touch back on villains with purpose. Favorite characters that are searching for purpose - Joe loves the Punisher and The Question and Lauren loves Xena Joe is finding purpose in helping fellow survivors while also getting better about caring for himself. He likes to help others so much that sometimes he forgets about himself. Joe Kashurba, from Agency Accelerator, manages 6 figure marketing budgets for some of the largest companies in their industry. Yet, it wasn’t always easy for him. He started off as a web designer. That’s where he made his money. As he watched the rise of Squarespace, and other website building providers (aka websites for dummies), he decided to build a competitor. Joe spent over a year of his time and money building and trying to sell this to local businesses. It was a disaster. But he learned a lot, and you will too. Because that’s what we talk about in today’s show. Here’s what Joe and I discuss: Why Joe thought creating the website builder was a good idea. How he divided it up for unique niches. Why he couldn’t give it away, even after building the sites for customers. How his niching strategy was a poor plan, and what he would do different today. Why he didn’t make the decision to quit when first realized it wasn’t working. How he targeted the wrong type of customer who didn’t value what he was providing, and what you can learn from this. The mistake he made building a product based on his perspective versus the experience of the customer. Why he kept focusing on making it inexpensive, instead of building the value. Why he resisted learning marketing and selling, and how everything changed once he understood the fundamentals. How he takes what he’s learned and now helps businesses scale and grow their businesses online. The challenges Joe faces while growing his agency. How he deals with the client’s expectations to personally work with him when his team does much of the work. Why he said the people who succeed are those who face their challenges and keep going. Last week, I went rafting in the Grand Canyon, and I completely unplugged with zero cell phone or internet for five days. I came out of this "digital detox" extremely nervous about what my e-mail inbox would look like, how many voicemails and text messages I'd have, and what kind of fires I'd need to put out on the business front. But amazingly, things were just fine. It took me two hours to catch-up on e-mail. None of my clients died, and most got through their pre-written workouts just fine without me. The post office was still delivering mail to my home. And life, my body, and my brain felt very, very good. Detoxed. Clean. My guest today, Joe DiStefano, is all about the digital detox. But he's no hairy hippie living in the woods. Instead, Joe is the co-founder of Spartan Coaching, the world's first international obstacle race training certification program. In this episode… Joe Winke is one of those guys who grew up in an entrepreneurial family. His father was a businessman and early on Joe knew he probably would run his own business someday. By the time he finished college he was on his way to California to start a business, even though he didn't know what it would be. On this episode you were going to hear the story and the many successes and failures that have made his companies the outstanding businesses that they are. Starting any business is difficult, but bootstrapping it from your own funds is probably the hardest way. So when he has done that with every business he has built, at least at the beginning stages, but is also a pro at navigating the fundraising aspects of a startup. His experiences and stories on this episode will equip you to navigate those waters as well. A successful business that needed to do better. Joe Winkes first successful business was www.HealthySurprise.com, a subscription service that provides healthy snack foods for people who are conscious of putting only the best things into their bodies. The business was doing great, but he knew it could do better. One of the most important steps he took to make that happen with pivoting the way the business was positioned and promoted. Instead of making it about groceries, he decided should be made out to be a gift. That one crucial pivot changed everything. Learn how he did it and why he did it, and how you can do the same when needed in your business. It's all on this episode. How do you go about pricing your products? It's not an easy answer to come up with.  When he was building his business, healthy surprise, Joe Winke discovered that one of the biggest mistakes he had made was underpricing what he was offering. There were too many variables and overhead items and his margins were far too low. He got into a financial bind and one of the answers was to increase his pricing while increasing quality at the same time. Hear Joe’s lessons learned and how he made the adjustments on this episode. What has been your lowest point in business? If you're like most entrepreneurs it probably had to do with tough times surrounding lack of sales or lack of profit. Joe Winke’s story is the same. On this episode you can hear how he struggled through his hardest moments, how he dealt with creditors, and the benefit was to be honest about his struggles from the start. Joe Friel has trained endurance athletes since 1980. His clients are elite amateur and professional road cyclists, mountain bikers, triathletes, and duathletes. They come from all corners of the globe and include American and foreign national champions, world championship competitors, and an Olympian. He is the author of ten books on training for endurance athletes including the popular and best-selling Training Bible book series. He holds a masters degree in exercise science, is a USA Triathlon and USA Cycling certified Elite-level coach, and is a founder and past Chairman of the USA Triathlon National Coaching Commission. Joe conducts seminars around the world on training and racing for cyclists, multisport athletes, and coaches, and provides consulting services for corporations in the fitness industry. In this episode of the podcast, Christopher Kelly interviews Joe about a wide variety of topics. It’s a rare glimpse inside the mind of a pioneering coach that you’ll enjoy. Curiosity drives Joe Friel to seek answers for athletes. Joe Friel is a man driven by curiosity. His blog contains thousands of articles he’s written over the years, chronicling his studies of diet, exercise, and everything related to training and performance. He wants to know why things happen the way they do and how to use that knowledge to make improvements in health and performance. That curiosity is what has made him into a world-class coach, and he’s willing to share it with anyone who cares to listen. In this conversation, Christopher dives deep into that knowledge to find some gems. Fast After 50: An instruction manual for masters athletes. In 1998, Joe wrote the book Cycling Past 50. Turning 70 prompted him to revisit the science, and he started writing up his latest findings on the blog. The feedback from that series of posts was overwhelmingly positive, and so Joe was prompted to start work on Fast After 50. The book is well-referenced, accessible and prescriptive. Good coaches bridge the gap between science and experience. “If you don't look good, we don't look good” - Vidal Sassoon. Coaches make recommendations that work, even if they’re not backed up by science. Often, the science is playing catch up. For example, coaches knew that the Fosbury Flop and aerobars worked long before there was science to show why. That’s why it pays to know someone like Joe! Strength training is an incredibly important part of the mix for older athletes. That’s because as we age, we naturally begin to decline in muscle mass and therefore, strength. The right kind of strength training, varied through the year will enable older athletes to maintain their ability to compete at a high level and preserve their health at the same time. Joe Friel recommends working the larger muscle groups during the off season on a regular basis, as much as 3 times per week. Then, during competitive seasons, cutting back on the degree of weight training, but not stopping altogether. When followed, this practice helps older athletes maintain their strength, which impacts endurance and performance. Get the details to Joe’s thoughts about strength training on this episode. Here’s the outline of this interview with Joel Friel: [0:05] Welcome and introduction of Joe Friel - coach and author. [1:40] How Joe met the co-author of his book, The Paleo Diet for Athletes, Loren Cordain, and how he started practicing a Paleo lifestyle in the first place. [3:22] How the book “Fast After 50” impacted Christopher differently each time he read it. [4:28] What was it about Joe’s 70th birthday that inspired him to write this book? [6:33] How does Joe reconcile a situation when as a coach he knows something works, but there isn’t scientific evidence to prove it? [8:06] The differences between athletes and “normal” people and why many studies don’t apply across the board because of those differences. [12:02] Why decreased aerobic capacity declines as an athlete ages, and what they can do to prevent it being as severe. [15:46] How Joe came to the conclusion that most aging athletes are defaulting to training over long, slow distances. [17:22] How does Joe reconcile his beliefs on these issues with the research recently shown by Dr. Phil Maffetone. [20:13] Why do aging athletes begin keeping larger stores of fat? [22:05] Joe’s insights on how the accumulation of stress plays into these issues as well as how genetics impacts it. [24:51] Has the Paleo diet been helpful for his clients in keeping body fat off? Best Known as director of the George Town Festival, Joe Sidek has established himself as one of Malaysia's strong advocates for the arts. Prior to becoming a festival director, Joe Sidek played major roles in various forms of art expression – from event management, art curator-ship, restaurant ownership and even costume design. He also still runs his family–owned textile chemical factory, Chemdyes Sdn Bhd. Since 2010 when he began GTF, in 2018, Joe also directed the 3-year-old Rainforest Fringe Festival in Kuching, having founded the festival in 2017. He also helmed the Butterworth Fringe Festival for 3 years (2015–2017) and earlier in 2014, he brought Tropfest, the world's largest short film festival to Southeast Asia and showcased the inaugural Tropfest South East Asia in Penang. He is 2020-2022 chairman of Federation of Asian Cultural Promotion, an industry expert on the industry panel of Malaysian federal agency for the arts and culture, Cultural Economy Development Agency (CENDANA), and chairman of Penang Arts Council. In this STIMY episode, Joe shares his fascinating life story: from wanting to do art in Central Saint Martins to returning to Malaysia, recovering from his first “failed' festival to eventually be one of Malaysia's biggest, and most well-known advocate for the arts & culture! Highlights: * 1:52: Joe has noble blood! * 3:18: Moving to Penang * 3:42: Why Joe thinks Penangites are “arrogant, confident, and proud of who they are” * 4:36: Wanting to do art in London & John Galliano * 5:45: Not wanting to return home * 6:50: His relationship with his dad * 10:37: Taking over the family business * 11:35: Why Joe's first festival in 2001 failed * 14:33: Becoming the festival director of the George Town Festival * 17:02: Getting help from the Penang Chief Minister * 19:15: Why Joe brings in not just local, but also international artists * 21:48: How Ernest Zacharevic got involved in the George Town Festival (resulting in the subsequent street art boom!) * 24:01: Gentrification & over-commercialisation * 24:54: GTF's student and community tickets project * 31:49: Finding historical, old & meaningful places to stage GTF * 32:41: The biggest challenges of a festival director * 35:50: Artists that have adapted well to COVID/virtual world * 37:50: How artists can build their personal brand & stand out * 42:21: How to become a festival director * 49:45: Where artists can find their community
