To celebrate Space Exploration Day, here is a special episode of The Accutron Show that features a conversation between two young and brilliant women that are building careers in aviation and space travel, Accutron ambassador Zara Rutherford and Alyssa Carson. Zara Rutherford s a Belgian-British aviator who, at age 19, became the youngest female pilot to fly solo around the world and the first person to complete a circumnavigation in a microlight aircraft after a five-month journey. Alyssa Carson is an American student with the goal of training to become an astronaut and to be selected for future human spaceflight to Mars. She attended U.S. Space Camp in 2008 and has also attended other space camps in Canada and Turkey. In 2013, NASA invited Alyssa to be on the MER 10 panel in Washington DC to discuss future missions to Mars live on NASA TV. Join the conversation between these two young women and dream big and fly high.EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS2:16 Alyssa: Since I was a kid, I was obsessed with the idea of going to space. No one in my family had a science or space background. So when I was 7, I went to space camp in Huntsville, Alabama - that was my version of Disneyworld. Everything I wanted to know as a kid was right there. Then watching a show on Nickelodeon, that's the first time I heard the word "Mars". 20:44 Zara: My trip around the world lasted 5 months. That's also because I was stuck in Alaska for a month, in the middle of winter, waiting for the weather to improve. The temperature dropped down to -30 degrees celsius; I was really worried since the plane had not been tested under those conditions. 30:31 Alyssa: I love meeting young kids, I love opening their eyes to the possibility of becoming an astronaut. Kids are used to hearing about becoming doctors, lawyers, etc. and not so much about joining a space program.

In April, the Aviatrix Book Club discussed Three-Eight Charlie: 1st Woman to Fly Solo Around the World – 1964, by Jerrie Mock. I was thrilled by the enthusiasm about the story from our members, and very pleasantly surprised by how well the book was written. It truly has broad appeal and will entertain audiences from avgeeks to young adults to Better Homes and Gardens fans. I am so grateful to publisher Wendy Hollinger for bringing the book back into print, and for championing Jerrie's story and accomplishments.Jerrie passed away in 2014, but my three guests in this episode each spent time with her while she was still with us. Wendy, through the course of republishing the book became close with Jerrie, as did author Nancy Roe Pimm, whose book The Jerrie Mock Story is a middle-grade biography about her. Finally, Shaesta Waiz, the previous record holder for youngest woman to fly solo around the world (before Zara Rutherford in 2022), was mentored for her trip by Jerrie. Stay tuned until the end of our conversation when Wendy has a special surprise for Shaesta.  Thank you to all three of these ladies for the work they do to carry on Jerrie's legacy to educate and inspire young people through her accomplishments and their own efforts. You can find Jerrie's plane ‘Charlie' in a new display at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum on the Mall in D.C.  Here is the blurb from the book: Three-Eight Charlie is the story of Jerrie Mock's record-setting flight as the first woman to solo around the world in 1964 in a single-engine Cessna 180. It's an insightful and well written account that includes intrigue and heroism, and discusses the cultures and geography of the world at the time. This book is a great read for aviation enthusiasts as well as young people, and anyone with big dreams. Three-Eight Charlie was originally published in 1970, but is out of print and difficult to find. Phoenix Graphix Publishing Services was pleased to make a new, color edition available for the 50th anniversary of Jerrie's flight, and has now created this black and white paperback. It includes maps and weather charts and photos that bring the story to life, and help the reader experience it more fully. Thanks so much for listening! Her adventure began in Kortrijk, Belgium, on August 18th, 2021 and ended on January 20th, 2022. Zara shares some of the most thrilling moments from her adventure and the behind-the-scenes preparation it took to turn her dream into reality. Buckle up and join us on a trip around the world with Accutron!Episode Highlights12:30 Mentally, there was a lot of stress involved especially when the weather was not so great, or when flying over water - which meant if anything went wrong or the engine quit, I had no option than ditch in the water or even pull the parachute..18:05 Growing up I was striving to find female role models in aviation. People mention Amelia Earhart which has done something incredible. I had satellite communication, accurate weather forecast, a GPS, reliable technology. She had none of this, she went out with only a map and a compass.22:00 The biggest thing for me mentally was Siberia. If I had to do a forced landing, I would have been so far away from civilization, it would have taken days to reach me.Learn more about the Accutron watch here, and follow @AccutronWatch:InstagramTwitterFacebookSubscribe to this podcast on Apple Podcasts and Spotify to hear new episodes as soon as they're released.Follow our hosts on social media:Bill McCuddy: Facebook  / TwitterDavid Graver: Instagram  / TwitterZara Rutherford: Instagram  / Twitter

A young British-Belgian pilot became the youngest woman to fly solo around the world on Jan. 20. Zara Rutherford, 19, landed in Kortrijk-Wevelgem Airport in Belgium after flying 51,000 km across 52 nations. She left the same airport last year on Aug. 18, flying in a Shark ultralight, the world's fastest microlight plane. Rutherford is also the first woman to fly around the world in a microlight. Cheers and applause went up as her plane came to a halt on the tarmac. “It's just really crazy, I haven't quite processed it,” Rutherford said after she landed. She held up British and Belgian flags. On her website, Rutherford said she hopes her achievement encourages girls to take up science, technology and aviation. “Do something a bit crazy! If you have the opportunity, go for it, because you only have one life.” (Reuters) This article was provided by The Japan Times Alpha.

While FLY, GIRL, FLY is a beautiful picture book for young readers, this interview is for everyone. Shaesta Waiz, an Afghan refugee, became the youngest woman to fly solo around the world at thirty years old. That mission, with 32 outreach events around the world, was focused on inspiring young people in aviation and STEM and to show them that if you dream it, you can do it. In the interview we talk about Shaesta's childhood, growing up in two worlds as an Afghan refugee in the United States, her solo trip, nineteen year old Zara Rutherford, who is on her voyage to break Shaesta's record, the Aviate with Shaesta podcast, and the current situation in Afghanistan. Nancy Roe Pimm is the author of eight books for young readers, including THE JERRIE MOCK STORY: THE FIRST WOMAN TO FLY SOLO AROUND THE WORLD . . . and there are more to come. We're so grateful to Nancy for her curiosity, enthusiasm, and writing craft to tell the stories of these inspiring women in aviation. And special mention to the artist, Alexandra Bye, whose gorgeous illustrations in this book provide a perfect visual interpretation of the text on the page to spark the imaginations of young readers.

My name is Zara Rutherford, I am 19 years old. I have just completed my A-Levels in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Economics, and Physics, and hope to go to university to study computer science/computer engineering. I have been flying for as long as I can remember and one of my biggest dreams (as well as flying around the world!) is becoming an astronaut. In August 2021 I left Belgium heading West, flying solo around the world flying in a very small plane. If I succeed, I will be youngest woman ever to fly solo around the world as well as the youngest person to fly solo around the world in a microlight. I was born into a family of aviators and was lucky to have great role models in my parents and grandparents. I want to build on this heritage and inspire others. My aim is to encourage girls and young women to pursue their dreams and promote aviation and STEM-related careers (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) for them. Only 5% of commercial pilots and 15% of computer scientists are women. In both areas – aviation and STEM – the gender gap is huge. In fact it is a dream gap. Our dreams are formed in early childhood. Children are being told fairy tales like the Sleeping Beauty, where the prince travels with style and courage through difficult and dangerous places. The princess is beautiful, sleeps and waits for the prince to rescue her. Boys learn from history books, street signs and statues, that they can be scientists, astronauts or CEO's. They are much more likely to receive science-related toys and are being encouraged to be bold. Girls get gifted dolls and are expected to be charming, beautiful and sweet. Upbringings shape our dreams. The youngest man to have flown solo around the world, Travis Ludlow, was 18 years old. The youngest woman, Shaesta Waiz was 30 at the time of her flight. With my flight, I hope to reduce this gap from 11 years to 11 months. I hold FAA and UK private pilot licenses plus Slovakian and French microlight licenses. I have been a member of the Honourable Company of Air Pilots since 2019. Check out Zara on FlyZolo, Instagram, and TikTok --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/toby-usnik/support
