It's another EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Katie J. Wells, postdoctoral fellow at Georgetown University, to discuss her recent book Disrupting D.C.: The Rise of Uber and the Fall of the City. Then, she speaks with Alex Sammon, politics writer at Slate, about the new speakership of Rep. Mike Johnson and his recent piece in Harper's entitled "Forbidden Fruit: The anti-avocado militias of Michoacán." First, Emma runs through updates on yesterday's mass shooting in Maine, the ongoing hunt for the shooter, Israel's sneak preview of the mass cleansing of Gaza, the IDF's bombing of journalists' families, Mike Johnson's speakership, UAW labor success, Trump's legal woes, North Carolina's gerrymander, and Hurricane Otis wreaking havoc on Acapulco, before watching Newt Gingrich step forward to bravely spin yesterday's mass shooting for the GOP. Then Katie J. Wells joins, first stepping back to contextualize the Uber boom in 2011 within the recovery from the great recession and a massive influx in money to Silicon Valley, and the lingering impact of mass urban disinvestment and decay of the 1980s. Next, Wells looks to this moment as the apex of the rise of technological solutionism, parsing through the story of D.C. Taxicab Commission Chairman Ron Linton's attempted sting on Uber's illegal operation, and the following pivot by the city to begin a push against regulation as a public good, embracing Big Tech's fig leaf for cheaper labor practices. After walking through the incredible political battle that Uber and Big Tech waged to push the gig economy past local economies, Katie and Emma wrap up with an acknowledgment of the important role Uber has played for workers in the gig economy, and the need for greater economic reform so Uber is no longer a viable solution. Alex Sammon then walks through his assessment of the nascent Speakership of Mike Johnson, a nondescript right-wing bigot, first clarifying what distinction the GOP moderates were able to manufacture between him and other extremist candidates, before tackling his generically bigoted, theocratic, and fascistic agenda. Wrapping up, Sammon tackles Johnson's role in representing the GOP's extreme evangelical base, what that means for the future of queer people, and how the right-wing media is somehow spinning the election of the mastermind behind Trump's coup as a success for moderate republicanism. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they watch the continuing dehumanization of Palestinians in mainstream news, Colin from Missouri explores getting involved in activism, and Mary from Maine on the horrors of her states' gun laws. They also watch Owen Schroyer's final plea as InfoWars abandons him ahead of his Insurrection jailing, Justin from Bremerton tackles some arguments for gun reform, Jeff from Minneapolis discusses the comparison between occupation in Palestine and Ireland in the 1900s, and the MR Crew watches Celtic fans in Glasgow show stunning solidarity with Palestine and Gaza. Shawn Fain announces major victories in the UAW strike, plus, your calls and IMs! The first city to fight back against Uber, Washington, D.C., was also the first city where such resistance was defeated. It was here that the company created a playbook for how to deal with intransigent regulators and to win in the realm of local politics. The city already serves as the nation's capital. Now, D.C. is also the blueprint for how Uber conquered cities around the world—and explains why so many embraced the company with open arms. Drawing on interviews with gig workers, policymakers, Uber lobbyists, and community organizers, Disrupting D.C.: The Rise of Uber and the Fall of a City (Princeton University Press, 2023) demonstrates that many share the blame for lowering the nation's hopes and dreams for what its cities could be. In a sea of broken transit, underemployment, and racial polarization, Uber offered a lifeline. But at what cost? This is not the story of one company and one city. Instead, Disrupting D.C. offers a 360-degree view of an urban America in crisis. Uber arrived promising a new future for workers, residents, policymakers, and others. Ultimately, Uber's success and growth was never a sign of urban strength or innovation but a sign of urban weakness and low expectations about what city politics can achieve. An informative and biblical discussion for parents and the churchconcerning The Confusion Over Female Identity and How Christians CanRespond.
We live in a cultural moment where the definition of “woman” eludes the keenest of thinkers and brightest of scientists, where one’s biological sex and one’s gender are divorced, where the meaning of gender itself is a constantly moving target, and where girls and women, especially, struggle to know who they are. On Wednesday's Mornings with Eric and Brigitte, author Katie McCoy covers important topics in her book, To Be A Woman, such as why as a culture, we've arrived in such a place of gender confusion and ways to respond in a Christlike way to loved ones struggling with gender identity.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Several decades ago, males made up the majority of the trans population, representing less than a fraction of a percent of society. Suddenly, within the last fifteen years, girls are outpacing boys more than 3-1, with a much later onset. What has changed and how should parents respond? Dr. Katie J. McCoy sits down with Rebecca Carrell and Nika Spaulding to discuss rapid-onset gender dysphoria and what parents aren't being told.Katie J. McCoy serves as director of Women's Ministry at Texas Baptists (Baptist General Convention of Texas). She holds a Ph.D. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, where she previously served on faculty.Purchase Katie J. Whether you call her KJ the Witch, Katie J, or Katie, you will feel the calming and patient presence that IS her as you listen to this episode. A presence that comes with a quiet confidence and a candid humor you wouldn't expect from someone who shares how she's in a unique season in her life and business: one of complete and utter surrender. Katie J built a 6 figure coaching business in only a couple of years and then decided to burn it all down this year. Rather than a re-building phase of business, it's more accurate to say she's in a season of surrendered creation centered around spiritual healing. This is a beautifully unique conversation unlike any other entrepreneur conversation you've heard. Make sure to follow Katie on Instagram to continue to follow her journey and watch what may unfold. Rosanna frantically reached out to me in December 2021 after hearing me on the Manifestation Babe Podcast. She wanted help moving stagnant energy in her body. On our Interest Call I found out she was a lightworker ready to leave her 9-5 to become a Full-Time Healer! By January 2022 she was my private client. Within a few months of our work together, she had such incredible manifestations come through that I just had to have her come on the show as a guest and share. In February, Rosanna set a goal to manifest $5,000 of non-monetary abundance. Listen to find out what she actually called in! In March, she set a goal to manifest $5,000 cash and she EXCEEDED that goal (by thousands)! In this episode, Rosanna shares some of the spiritual practices that she uses as a lightworker and healer to address her own limiting beliefs and manifest her dreams. Rosanna refers to herself as a “lone wolf” and shares that she was hesitant about the value of group coaching before we started working together (my private container includes group coaching). Now she understands how important it is to surround herself around other lightworkers who share similar values and goals. Being in my group coaching container has improved the way that she thinks about what is possible for her in her business. She says, “If it's possible for them, it's got to be possible for me too!” P.S. Early Bird enrollment for Full-Time Healer is NOW OPEN! In this episode I talk about a podcast I listened to Womanifester by Katie J on the topic of failure, lil life update, Inventing Anna & more
Failure means a lack of success; it does not mean that you will never be successful. In this episode, I share my top three tips for navigating failure as a lightworker. Most businesses fail within the first 5 years. I say, the businesses that don't fail have failed hundreds of times in those 5 years as they were getting to the point of success. During my time as an entrepreneur, I have failed a lot - I share some of those failures with you in this episode. I also share how I shifted my mindset around failure and grew through the failures I experienced. I hope that you fail, because if you don't fail, it means you aren't trying anything new. This episode was originally an IG Live from my Impact Chat series. If you would rather watch the replay instead of listening, head over to my IG (@womanifester) and you will find the recording on my feed! In this episode, I talk about hard work. How I avoid it at all costs and how I choose to live a life of ease, fun and play, rather than hustle and sacrifice, grind and hard work. Fuck hard work! I think, as a society, we have glorified hard work, we have glorified being busy, we have glorified hustle and sacrifice. It doesn't have to be that way. We don't have to live our lives by that standard. This is all coming from someone who was an A student for most of her academic career. I graduated high school with a 4.1 GPA. I was the class president. I was the cheer captain. I was a part of the National Honor Society. I volunteered; I did all the things. I worked so hard to be that perfect student, daughter, woman, etc. I worked so hard to please everybody else. After a lot of shadow work, I have released that need to please society and everyone around me. I just realized a few years ago that I don't have to work so hard. And neither do you! Now, I have designed my business in a way that allows for time and money freedom. We can work smarter NOT harder. I am going to teach you how! Y'all, I'm so excited for you to hear this episode with Katie J.Trent! With school back in full swing and the stresses of COVID possibly keeping kid's home again, I know Katie's message will give you practical wisdom you're searching for if you're trying to decide whether or not homeschooling is the right fit for your family. I know Katie's message will equip you with much of what you need to know to get started. She is such an inspiration to parents who are scared to homeschool because of all of the unknowns. But, even if homeschooling isn't on your radar, Katie's story is such a powerful testimony of how God worked in a young girl's life while she was living in a dysfunctional home. Her dad abandoned their family when Katie was in middle school and left her mom to raise five kids alone. Katie was confused because of the vastly different faith of her parents and had prayed for God to give her clarity about what was true. Then she married and had a very rocky first couple of years until God intervened. She and her husband knew they wanted a different life than what they'd seen growing up, but didn't know how to get there. Eventually Katie left a thriving career in school counseling and mental health program management so she and her husband could bring her kiddos home. Katie's mission is to inspire women to grow in their faith, strengthen their families and simplify their homeschooling journeys. She has a book coming out in October titled, Dishing Up Devotions: 36 faith Building Activities for Homeschooling Families, that is a great resource for anyone wanting to grow their children's faith through interactive , fun and practical devotions. I know you're going to love Katie!
Today, we're continuing my money series and talking about my 6 go-to money manifestation practices! **This is an explicit episode and not intended for the ears of children or relatives** I would not be where I am today or be able to grow to the level that I am calling in without these practices! Grab a pen and paper because this episode is packed full of juiciness that you will want to take notes on. One of the practices that has catalyzed my business growth in so many ways is morning manifestation pages! This consists of three pages (brain dump page, gratitude page, and manifestation page) that I write almost every morning. I am even sharing some of my entries with you and giving you a peek into some of my dreams and manifestations. If you are new around here, I am Katie J - a manifestation witch, spiritual life coach, healer, breathwork facilitator, retreat facilitator, and space holder. Guys!!! We are SO excited to bring you today's episode! Micki has been a huge fan of Katie J. aka Womanifester for about a year now and we can't believe we are able to now say she is a guest on our podcast! Micki first came across Katie J. on the Manifestation Babe Podcast, and she was talking about shadow work and working with witches. Naturally, Micki was instantly intrigued and reached out. Since then, Micki has taken multiple breath work classes and sat in (virtual) women circles with Katie, and the experiences have been transformational! In this episode, Katie J. discusses the meaning of shadow work and how beneficial it is for your alignment and TRE (Tension Stress and Trauma Release). She dives into the pre-conditioned mental blockages for the BIPOC community and how to bypass some of these blockages in order to manifest your desires. Katie J. is a shining light for all intentional manifesters. She is walking the walk for anyone who is afraid to live their authentic life. Currently, Katie J. is living and travelling in her van (named LOVE❤️...ugh) , with her dog Hoolie and hosting retreats around the United States. In this bumper edition, we begin a projected trilogy of episodes on James Lindsay, Twitter's favourite anti-Critical Race Theory obsessive and bullying prick. This time, we track the earlier part of James' career as a professional reactionary, leading up to the embarassing 'Conceptual Penis hoax' of which James still seems inexplicably proud. Daniel demonstrates (to a Jack still groggy from all the AstraZeneca nanobots coursing through his brain) that James was pretty much always the obnoxious douchebag he is now, but simply needed to learn through experience (of being called on his bullshit) how to successfully present his obnoxious douchebaggery as a profound quest to save Western civilisation from standpoint epistemology or something. As he has done in the past--controversially with groups wedded to certain other terms and ideas connected with them--he has asked for a disambiguation of the term "pride" in this context. Perhaps unsurprisingly, though for some legitimate reasons, there was a rather substantial blowback to his request to carefully consider the terminology being employed as dispassionately as possible." Greta Christina, [Peter Boghossian, and What Gay Pride Actually Means] https://the-orbit.net/greta/2014/11/01/peter-boghossian-and-what-gay-pride-actually-means/ "Okay. Fine. As a fully licensed and registered LGBT person, I will spell out to Peter Boghossian what, exactly, “gay pride” means. (Actually, to be precise, I will point out what “LGBT pride” means.) "LGBT pride does not mean being proud of having been born lesbian, gay, bisexual, or trans. "It means being proud of having survived. "It means being proud of living in a homophobic, biphobic, transphobic society — a society that commonly treats us with contempt at best and violent hatred at worst — and still getting on with our lives. It means being proud of flourishing, in a society that commonly thinks we’re broken. It means being proud of being happy, in a society that commonly thinks we should be miserable. It means being proud of being good and compassionate, in a society that commonly thinks we’re wicked. It means being proud of fighting for our rights and the rights of others like us, in a society that commonly thinks we should lie down and let ourselves get walked on — or that thinks we should be grateful for crumbs and not ask for more. It means being proud of retaining our dignity, in a society that commonly treats us as laughing-stocks. It means being proud of loving our sexuality and our bodies, in a society that commonly thinks our sexuality and our bodies are disgusting. It means being proud of staying alive, in a society that commonly beats us down and wants us dead." Lindsay's Everybody is Wrong About God"] https://thehumanist.com/arts_entertainment/books/book-review-james-lindsays-everybody-wrong-god/ "Given that Lindsay feels most people don’t intellectually believe in God anymore, his next main inquiry is an exploration of what people do mean when they say they “believe” in God. He argues that most of these people are actually articulating a more subtle need for community, comfort, and a set of morals, which they then equate with God. God is the embodiment of their ideas on what makes a good life. But once personified, they confuse their ideas of what makes for a good life with the actual individual they have created and then stubbornly argue for the existence of the said character, i.e. “God.” "Lindsay calls on atheists to recognize this phenomenon and change their arguments accordingly, addressing the needs that God personifies for the person rather than the actual belief in God. This is the next step of “post-theism.” Society must find ways to fulfill those needs in a secular way. Once those needs are addressed and met in those other ways, the need for “God” will quickly and naturally fall away." For faculty who have already adopted a defensive posture in response to threats to eliminate tenure, this demand feels like an additional assault on academic freedom; one that reflects a distressing student-as-consumer mentality. From this vantage point, students are too easily cast as another group of adversaries when, in actuality, students are straw targets who have little power compared to the real threat—the unchecked corporatization of legal education. This essay attempts to redirect faculty outrage back to the proper mark by decoupling the trigger-warning movement from the broader phenomenon of the neoliberal law school. It presents an alternate reading of trigger-warning mandates: as a student critique of legal pedagogy that demands access and opportunity for all students to fully engage in classroom discussions that can be difficult and are often painful. Trigger warnings give lie to the myth that law is based on dispassionate and objective legal analysis. Seen this way, trigger warnings invite students to become partners in the production of knowledge, while allowing faculty to maintain intellectually rigorous classroom environments. Faculty cannot afford to view students as antagonists. Instead, students should be enlisted as allies in our efforts to challenge the orthodoxy of market-based solutions to the legal education crisis." Katie J.M. Baker, "Teaching Rape Law in the Age of the Trigger Warning." https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/katiejmbaker/teaching-rape-law-in-the-age-of-the-trigger-warning "You're in a Harvard Law classroom, which is supposed to be this advanced, high-minded environment, and when we got to rape, the conversation totally devolved into bullshit," one Harvard Law graduate said. "I don't need to pay Harvard tuition to hear men be dumbasses." "Criminal law is a required class, so even students who want to practice tax law or litigate intellectual property cases must participate in "rape week." It also means that professors who aren't necessarily experts in the field sometimes teach it. For many students, that's where the problems start. "Some hate when professors insist on using the Socratic method, a common law school teaching practice in which students are cold-called and mercilessly questioned, because a rape survivor might have to argue an accused rapist's case. Others don't understand why professors engage with students who make insensitive remarks about victims such as "What if she looked older than 12?" or "Is it still rape if it wasn't consensual but he really thought it was?" instead of shutting them down. Some law students even told BuzzFeed News that they chose to skip their "rape week" classes completely rather than seethe in silence." The conceptual penis presents significant problems for gender identity and reproductive identity within social and family dynamics, is exclusionary to disenfranchised communities based upon gender or reproductive identity, is an enduring source of abuse for women and other gender-marginalized groups and individuals, is the universal performative source of rape, and is the conceptual driver behind much of climate change. "An explicit isomorphic relationship exists between the conceptual penis and the most problematic themes in toxic masculinity, and that relationship is mediated by the machismo braggadocio aspect of male hypermasculine thought and performance. A change in our discourses in science, technol-ogy, policy, economics, society, and various communities is needed to protect marginalized groups, promote the advancement of women, trans, and gender-queer individuals (including non-gendered and gender-skeptical people), and to remedy environmental impacts that follow from climate change driven by capitalist and neocapitalist overreliance on hypermasculine themes and exploitative utilization of fossil fuels." Skeptic Magazine [writeup] https://www.skeptic.com/reading_room/conceptual-penis-social-contruct-sokal-style-hoax-on-gender-studies/ "Assuming the pen names “Jamie Lindsay” and “Peter Boyle,” and writing for the fictitious “Southeast Independent Social Research Group,” we wrote an absurd paper loosely composed in the style of post-structuralist discursive gender theory. The paper was ridiculous by intention, essentially arguing that penises shouldn’t be thought of as male genital organs but as damaging social constructions. We made no attempt to find out what “post-structuralist discursive gender theory” actually means. We assumed that if we were merely clear in our moral implications that maleness is intrinsically bad and that the penis is somehow at the root of it, we could get the paper published in a respectable journal." Charmaine Chua, The Slow Boat to China https://thedisorderofthings.com/2015/01/05/the-slow-boat-to-china/ "The captain tells me that the Ever Cthulhu, like all other ships, never stops for a break. It continues traversing the globe’s surface in 45-day rotations, reaching one end of its route and turning around almost immediately. Container ships are monuments that move, and 100, 000 of them ply the oceans at any given moment. In 2014, the Ever Cthulhu traveled a total of 103,000 sea miles — halfway to the moon. All that distance, all that steel, all that power. Yet, even ships as large as these require very little human labor: a few seamen to navigate, engineers to monitor the ship’s internal workings, others to keep watch, clean, fit, change the oil. The Ever Cthulhu itself has a crew of 22 men – four German, one Polish, seventeen Filipino, and one passenger: myself. Across the world’s ocean, 1.5 million invisible seafarers toil on three to nine month contracts to bind the world together through trade, though they remain, for the most part, isolated in their cabins and mess rooms, retained on precarious short-term contracts, and kept away from their families – indeed, from most of the world. The third mate, a young Filipino, tells me that all his sacrifices are worth it for a salary that pays much more than he could possibly hope for on land. In some sense then, as a container of both aspiration and drudgery, one might think of the ship more as a space than an object; a floating island of both hard labor and the possibility of better futures. "This trans-pacific passage is of particular interest to me because it is by far North America’s largest trade lane, and accounts for nearly twenty million TEUs in U.S. trade alone. This U.S.-China market is dominated by large U.S. retailers such as Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy, and Home Depot – companies notorious for cutting labor costs by using the enhanced mobility of labor to shift work to third parties, erecting cruel hierarchies in both their Chinese factories and U.S. stores. Transoceanic shipping is, in large part, responsible for these widening inequalities: since shipping operates beyond the territorial spaces governed by labor regulations, it allows corporations to do away with the hard-fought democratic and labor rights struggled for and earned within local labor contexts. The internationalization of the supply chain, in other words, is aided by increasing innovations in the speed and efficiency of the shipping market. As a result, circulation has been folded into the production process, becoming a field of experimentation for value-generation in its own right. Of course, there are highly uneven aspects to this story of logistics. Even as members of the International Longshore and Workers Union [negotiate their contract under embattled circumstances](http://www.maritime-executive.com/article/PMA-vs-ILWU-Negotiations-Jeapordized-Ports-Congested-2014-11-04) on the west coast of North America, indentured truck drivers [struggle against overwhelming legal barriers](http://www.dissentmagazine.org/blog/port-truck-drivers-on-strike-dispatch-from-los-angeles-long-beach-ports) to unionization in Oakland and LA, port workers in mushrooming Chinese ports can scarcely dream of ILWU wages or safeguards, and factory workers around the world toil under the poverty line. The world of logistics looks very different indeed from the perspective of Taiwan, California, or the Ocean." Today’s show is the first in a segment dedicated to those who create with uncommon or interesting materials and as soon as I landed on this theme, I knew I needed to reach out to today’s guest. Katie J. Evans of Hart Variations is a jewelry designer who uses things like butterfly wings, snake skin sheds, bones, entire insects, and feathers to create really stunning and unique pieces. In the interview, we talk about how her materials are ethically and legally sourced, which is a process I wasn't familiar with. I envisioned her walking along and finding the materials, but it turns out there are actually rules and regulations and official suppliers for these types of materials. We also talk a lot about her creative process, why she decided to hire help, how she’s navigated the jewelry world to find the right audience for her work and why feedback from her customers has made a world of difference in her business. Can Syria ever achieve peace? Over the past five years, the Syrian conflict has grown to become the center of a global humanitarian crisis, overwhelming many of its neighbors in the Middle East, as well as several countries in Europe. There are nearly five million refugees who have been directly affected by violence within Syria, three quarters of whom are women and children. Although many in the international community are working to find a peaceful solution, other states are actively prolonging the violence. In the face of such conflicting agendas, is a diplomatic resolution possible? Who will lead this resolution? Can Syria survive as a viable state? And what have we learned from the Syrian peace talks thus far? Join us for a conversation about the challenges of reaching peace in Syria and what the global community can do to help. Speaker Hrair Balian is Director of the Conflict Resolution Program for The Carter Center. The discussion is moderated by Katie J. Zoglin, Senior Deputy City Attorney at the San Jose City Attorney's Office. For more information about this event please visit: http://www.worldaffairs.org/event-calendar/event/1594
This week's guest is Katie J. M. Baker, a fellow reporter at BuzzFeed, who recently did a story about the Facebook group that is trying to solve the grisly murder of a 19 year old girl from Mississippi.Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Katie J.M. Baker is a reporter for BuzzFeed. “I went to Steubenville a year after the sexual assault to cover their first big football game of the season and I was face-to-face with these people who I had been writing about without knowing much about them. From far away it seems like, do these details matter? Do we care if these people’s lives get messed up when the narrative is so strong, when Steubenville now stands for more awareness around rape culture? But when you’re there, of course it matters. After that piece I realized I didn’t want to blog anymore and I wanted to just focus on reporting.” Thanks to Casper, Scribd, and TinyLetter for sponsoring this week's episode.
