How about some stats to make you sad? Kids are on screens an average of 7 hours a day…and we spend 85% of our parenting energy on what our kids are doing wrong.Aw, man!It stinks to start with the negative. In fact, that will train our brains to see more negative things, which is why I did it.Do you feel more down after reading that? More worried? More hopeless about our kids' generation? The GOOD news is that there's another way.I'm beyond honored to host Ralphie Jacobs of Simply on Purpose today to remind us that not only CAN we look for the positive, but we must - because it works, and it's actually easier than yelling angrily at our kids! You'll come away from this interview feeling so encouraged and ready to parent differently, with 85% of your energy (or more!) focused on the positive!Get ready to learn:how to create positive momentum in your child's daywhy asking a kid or teen, “Why did you do that?” becomes a parenting trap (that you DON'T want to fall into!)what comes first in parenting - the words or the feelingsa much better way to say, “If you don't clean your room, you don't get to come to the movie,” that's actually EASIER to enforce!why fear-based behavior is bad for everyone in the long runan incredibly powerful way to guard your connection with your child - and raise kids who, like Ralphie's, want to call home and come home to be with parents
Zeffy is one of my biggest misses so far. I met Francois 3 years ago when he was raising his $3M seed round. But I passed. They were at ~$500K in revenue at that point. In the last 3 years, they've grown 30x. Clearly, I missed out.But it's been a long road for Francois. Before he got to the current idea, he had to make 3 pivots, including building a marketplace and selling to schools. Finally he landed on what Zeffy is today, a fundraising platform for nonprofits. The crazy thing is that it's absolutely free to use. They make all of their money, which is now in the tens of millions in revenue a year, from tips. Voluntary tips that are given by donors while they donate to the nonprofits who use Zeffy's platform. It's not an easy model to wrap your head around, but it's working in a big way. Whether or not being a mom is something that's in your future, trying to juggle a life and a career is something that a lot of women worry about. There's a lot of shame and guilt that women feel when it comes to navigating motherhood and having a successful career. That's why I am so excited to bring you this interview with Samantha Tradelius. A born go-getter from early on, Samantha always knew she was destined to do big things. Armed with her brokerage license and natural gift for being a connector, Samantha began her entrepreneurial journey co-founding Commercial Coverage Insurance Agency (CCIA) alongside her husband. Following her success with CCIA, Samantha knew it was time to lean into a passion that had inspired her from a very young age. Having never stopped thinking about the stories her grandmother and hero, GG, would tell her about raising three children as a single mom in the 1950s. Samantha always noticed that in all her stories, her grandmother never mentioned anyone helping her...or asking for help. She knew that her grandmother had done everything she could to rub her nickels together to make everything possible for her children.Inspired by this story, Samantha wanted to utilize her skills as a self-starter and born networker to create a non-profit that provided the much-valued support that many single mothers need. Not one to waste any time, Samantha got straight to establishing The Sparkle Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to helping single women throughout the Bay Area, the Inland Empire, and the Cities of Los Angeles and Sacramento. In just a few short years, The Sparkle Foundation has seen an unprecedented amount of success, thanks to Samantha's sheer determination and passion for giving back to her local community. Sparkle supports single mothers and children with an array of initiatives including enrichment scholarships for children, a Christmas holiday gift drive and back to school backpack drive. In addition to The Sparkle Foundation, Samantha established SparkleBiz, which provides micro-loans for female-owned small businesses, and access to a large, connected network. Since its founding in 2016, The Sparkle Foundation has raised more than $1 million—with every dollar reinvested in the community. Not one to stop there, Samantha wrote and self-published a book and is also the host of growing weekly podcast; InspiHER'd. Samantha's mission to support and uplift women shines through every project she takes on.In this episode of the Contagious Confidence Podcast, we talk about:What being multi-passionate entrepreneur isWhy it's difficult to be a mom and have a careerDifferent ways you can be a mom and have a career wellWhy we need to remove the word "balance" from our vocabWhere to Find Samantha:Website: www.samanthatradelius.comSparkle FoundationSparkleBizBook: Impact: Stories of Change Makers, Creators, and Everyday Women Doing Extraordinary WorkPodcast: InspiHER'dInstagram: @samanthatradeliusStay Connected: Katie's IG: @katieehawkes Podcast's IG: @contagiousconfidencepodcast Email: contagiousconfidencepodcast@gmail.com

SummaryWhat can we learn from civil society leaders who wish to spur the adoption and implementation of innovations? How do humans – within organizations, and particularly in NGOs – react to change? What is the best advice when leading NGOs through innovation, from a senior team leader's perspective?Today, I am interviewing Dermot O'Gorman of WWF Australia on the do's can don'ts of NGO leadership when it comes to promoting innovation. Dermot's Bio:Global Leader in Innovation for Sustainable DevelopmentCEO at WWF AustraliaVisiting Scholar, Stanford University Digital Civil Society LabBoard of directors, ACFID, Australian Council for International Development We discuss: How can AI help us with our nonprofit core purpose: e.g. in the field of conservation, the monitoring of fish caught/harvested, from the source to the plate of the consumer – to find out whether it was poached or legitimately harvestedHigh-risk, long-term capital in philanthropy is not sufficiently available, but NGOs also do not ask enough for it. We don't have the right organizational risk profile in place, but also do not have the organizational systems to executeOne of the most important things leaders can do to spur innovation is to invest in itCEOs cannot afford to delegate the creation of an innovation-friendly organizational climate to others: they have to be Chief innovatorsCEOs have to be able to say transparently: I do not know if this will succeed, we will test and validate, iterate, and work with decision stage gates till we figure it outDon't fall victim to ‘shiny' innovations and their halo effect, or to supersmart single ‘heroes' that purport to introduce and manage innovation on their ownCEOs among others have to give senior staff protection so that they can focus on 4-6 weeks sprints, and they have to signal to the org that they will manage the risks that come with innovationThe board's risk appetite matters a great deal as wellWhy the removal of old org processes is hard: you need something in place till the new process is in place; and if old processes are linked to values/ideas that staff have an attachment to, this is particularly hardQuotes:“We fundamentally underestimate both the upsides and the downsides of innovation”“As CEO, you cannot delegate innovation to an innovation chief; you need to be around to take away obstacles, indicate the strategic boundaries within which innovations have to fit, etc."“Don't let the perception on brand risk – often in the head of one Communications staff member -- be an overblown obstacle” Resources:Dermot's LinkedIn ProfileDermot's Company WebsiteDermot's article: the need for a first ‘regenerative revolution'Tosca's report: HERELinks to previous episodes on innovation:https://5oaksconsulting.org/podcast/Youtube video of this podcastTwitter LinkedIn Facebook Youtube

As teachers, we all know the feeling: your students return to the classroom after a long break, and it seems like they've forgotten everything you've ever taught them. It can be frustrating to feel a loss of routine or a disregard for procedures in your classroom, but it's not uncommon. Often, students just need a refresher on how to interact with one another and their learning environment. In this episode, we're talking about how to return from a long break and get your students back into the swing of things. We'll explain why students might “forget” classroom procedures over the break and the best ways to gently remind them upon their return. What's in this episode:Why students might struggle with executive function and routines after a long breakHow Montessori environments differ from traditional classrooms during these adjustment periodsSystems you should give extra attention after breaksHow to gently remind students of classroom procedures they may have forgottenHow to guide students through conflict resolution after a breakModeling courtesy for your students to inspire them to practice it as wellWhy you should revisit your classroom agreements after a long breakFor full show notes, resources, links and to download the transcript, visit trilliummontessori.org/podcastResources Mentioned in This EpisodeExplore the Montessori Principles to Practice Webinar LibrariesConnect With UsVisit our websiteFollow us on InstagramConnect with us on Facebook
How does our food environment dictate our health? Well, as it turns out it's incredibly important! Can you believe that in the 1950s and 60s, Americans had comparable obesity levels to the Europeans? What shifted their diets, and ultimately their waistlines, is a number of factors including public policy on nutrition, but also the food environment including portion sizing and the sheer number of choices involved in food consumption.Jack Bobo is the author of ‘Why smart people make bad food choices.' He is also the CEO of Futurity, a food foresight company that advises companies, foundations and governments on emerging food trends and consumer attitudes and behaviors related to the future of food. Recognized by Scientific American in 2015 as one of the 100 most influential people in biotechnology, Jack is a global thought leader and previously served as the Chief Communications Officer and Senior Vice President for Global Policy and Government Affairs at Intrexon Corporation. #16. In 2004, I was tasked with building a football program at a brand new high school. It was my first experience working in a public school, and although I thought I had all the answers as a first-time head coach, I quickly learned that I was not as ready as I had originally thought. For the first couple of years, I did what “good” programs do - all learned from being a product of Catholic schools. We had some success with this blueprint, but I knew something was missing. So, in 2009 I evaluated my program, and concluded that a vital component was missing: we were only training our players to win football games. As I mentioned, my previous experience as a student, a teacher, and a coach was only at Catholic schools, which had very strong athletic programs. Although these Catholic schools wanted to win on the field, their ultimate mission was to prepare their students for life. Most of which was done through the lens of Catholicism, which obviously wasn't going to fly at my new public school. So, I had to turn to other resources. Being an English teacher at heart, I read everything I can get my hands, but one book in particular, provided that “aha” moment, The Winners Manual by Jim Tressel.Coach Tressel was the head football coach at Youngstown State and Ohio State. At the young age of 32, Coach Tressel was hired to turn around the football program at YSU, and he decided that he first needed to teach his players what winning meant - not only on the field, but more importantly in life. So in 1986 he created The Winners Manual that center around guiding his players to be able to answer this important question: “If the game of life ended tonight, would you be a winner?” Using The Winners Manual as his foundation, Coach Tressel won over 240 games, 5 national championships, and 7 conference titles in his 25-year head coaching career. More importantly, he helped his players be winners in life.Currently the President of Youngstown State University, Coach Tressel was kind enough to take time from his busy schedule to discuss:Where the idea of The Winners Manual came fromHow training his athletes to be winners in life translated to winning on the field as wellWhy it's important for coaches to separate what they do from who they areAnd as a special bonus, of course had to get Coach's thoughts on the CFP and the upcoming OSU/Michigan gameIn the Prologue, Coach Tressel states, “It is my sincere hope that this manual will be helpful in your pursuit of excellence; that it will provide important tools you need to succeed; that during difficult times when you feel like giving up, you will leaf through this book and find something refreshing or something that ignites a fire to keep you going” (Tressel XV). Well The Winners Manual has been just that for me and think it can be for you too.Review The "I" in Win on Apple Podcast or my website to let me know what you think of the show. "Our ego is our silent partner--too often with a controlling interest."~Cullen HightowerThe mere mention of the word ego conjures images of self-loving, selfish maniacs who would stop at nothing to bolster their own self-image. Here we make the clear distinction between ego, a person's self-esteem, and an egotist, a person wholly consumer with self-importance. Without the ego, there would be no success. What would drive us to fight through resistance, to risk failure, to persevere? We look at how a person can use their ego aspirationally without letting success get to our heads. In this episode:Why parents act like fools at youth sports gamesThe absurdity of big egos in large companiesWhy ego tends to show itself once you've had successLeaders who say "I" when things go poorly and "we" when things go wellWhy sacred cows exist in organizationsThe higher up you move in an organization, the fewer pats on the back you should expectHow Frank knew he wasn't getting a big tip at Outback SteakhouseHow to convince yourself you are still the underdogWhy we still freak out about posting videos onlineA lack of ego can be just as a big of a problem as an ego out of control
“What's important about communication is that it's made up of two parts. The first part is expressing how you feel, and the second part is listening.”— Allison VillaReal communication is made up of two equally important parts: expressing and listening. And you can't have effective communication without having both sides!Make no mistake — being an effective communicator is a powerful skill. Some people are great listeners, but have a lot of trouble choosing the right words (or tone, or time) to make their true feelings known. Others have a wonderful knack for revealing their thoughts and emotions, but have some trouble really hearing what others are trying to tell them. One thing is for sure: no matter how well you think you communicate, there is always room to grow and improve! No partnership was ever harmed by improving your communication skills.Since both sides are so vitally important, I'm addressing each of them in their own episode. In this episode of Couplehood, I share my top 3 favourite ways to express yourself effectively. This episode is all about learning how to convey your thoughts and feelings clearly, respectfully, and effectively, in a way that helps other people understand your perspective. It's about so much more than just choosing the right words — it's about reframing the way that you approach sharing your feelings. What are the three steps you must take in order to be paid to be you?Kerry Garner Venter is an NLP, Mindset, and Online Lifestyle business mentor who is a firm believer in the magic of being paid to be you.To manifest a reality where you work in alignment with your soul purpose, you must become a conscious creator. You must be deliberate about using your gifts and superpowers, which means learning a new way of being and a new set of competencies and capacities.Kerry breaks this down into three steps: accessing, leveraging, and monetizing.Once you've recognized and begun honouring your gifts, you can begin to offer them to others. Leverage your gifts by learning how to package and sell your value. Take advantage of the beautiful technologies that make running an online business so easy! While monetizing, you must make space to receive not only money, but also guidance and inspiration. As you manifest the things that you want in life, make sure that you're prepared for them — physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.“If you want to be paid the amount of money that you really feel you're worth, you've really got to clear the mindset and make space to be able to receive,” says Kerry. “When you're being paid to be you, you become the gift that someone wants to buy. And the money is a gift for you to contribute.”Kerry believes that contribution is the new currency — through our gifts, we contribute to each other and exchange value. When we contribute, are paid to be ourselves, and work in alignment, we plug ourselves into the magic! In this episode of the Paid To Be You podcast, you'll discover:How to run your business on your own terms — and be compensated wellWhy it's important to shift your mindset in order to be ready to receiveThe power of reframing contribution as a new form of currencyAbout Kerry Garner VenterKerry Garner Venter is an NLP, Mindset, and Online Lifestyle business mentor.
