Hello everyone and welcome to Diabetic Loving! My name is Safiyah Basir, I have been type one diabetic since the age of 7. I come to you as the American Diabetes Association Ambassador and an Executive leader for the Tour De Cure that's happening June 10th of 2023. I'll have a link to join the Diabetic Loving, Healthy Living Team below. I'd love to have you on the team! My Hemoglobin A1C has been consistently within an incredibly healthy range for several years and within the past four years between 5.7-5.4. My most recent A1C is 5.4 which was taken Very recently. I've started this podcast to show all who are touched by diabetes that you can have and live a healthy, full, limitless life with diabetes. I want to also remind everyone listening that these are opinions and not medical advice. I'll have a new episode each week. Today we have some amazing tips from Kelly Glad, https://www.instagram.com/educatorgladiator/ on Instagram. Kelly has a Master of Science - in Nursing Education, a Bachelor of Science - in Emergency Medical Services and Administration is a Registered Nurse and Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist. Here are Kelly's tips Here are my tips: 1. Always remember to look out for number one which is yourself. You can't take care of others until you take care of yourself first. 2. Work with your care team when it comes to managing diabetes. You can't afford "bad advice" and it is dangerous to change your regimen without consulting your care team. 3. Finally, have a support system in place. Don't live your life with diabetes alone. Educate your friends and family on how to support you. It also helps to get a diabetes educator in your corner! I hope these tips are helpful To all who are listening or watching I'd like to have a truly engaged podcast so please email your questions and episode suggestions to me at diabeticloving@gmail.com Diabetic Loving Instagram Link https://www.instagram.com/diabeticloving/ Please also remember to subscribe to our Diabetic Loving Instagram page, YouTube, Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Podcast, and all of the streaming platforms. I'm so glad Larry Logsdon, MSN Ed., PHN, RN, RNC-NIC, CLC came on the show to share his perspective of being a male in nursing. He didn't think twice about his decision to become a nurse; he just followed his heart. And what a heart he has, you can hear it in everything he says. He dispelled many of the stereotypes attributed to male nurses and he did it expertly. After almost 15 years as a nurse, his newest adventure as a NICU Clinical Nurse Educator has him so excited he's losing sleep! He is an amazing human with an empathetic nature that is unmatched. In the five-minute snippet, Larry reveals how his superhero would save him, and it's not how you think. Sorry, Larry for not giving you the ‘Joe Rogan' experience, next time, stogies in the closet! SEE YOU NOW has always focused on the incredible stories of nurse-led health innovation and we're pleased to introduce a new series -- Frontline Forces documenting the pandemic response of frontline nurses to the overwhelming challenges and uncertainty and the changing nature of nursing in the midst of evolving circumstances nurses are facing at this point in the pandemic. School nurses are on the frontlines of community and public health. They play a critical role in the health, wellbeing, and readiness to learn for children around the world. And today --they are guiding schools, families, local officials, and public health departments through a global pandemic unlike anything seen in the past 100 years. Yet even before the pandemic school nurses were overtasked, under-resourced, and hard to find. Despite recommendations from The American Academy of Pediatrics and the National School Nurses Association of having at least one registered nurse in every school, fewer than 40% of American public schools have a full-time nurse. COVID-19 has magnified the contribution of school nurses and the need for every student to have access to school nurses and each school district to have a fully funded, comprehensive health services program. We checked in with school nurse Liz Pray, MSN-Ed, RN, NCSN in Washington State to learn about the role of a school nurse during a pandemic, how she is experiencing this moment, learning from and gaining strength from the support of her national school nursing community, and why school nurses are more important and essential than ever. Part 1: What really is resiliency? Featuring host Imana "Mo" Minard with Dr. Nicolette Louissaint, Rasheda Hatchett and Chandra Brown. We hear a lot about the importance of resiliency, but sometimes it is helpful to step back and really define what something is all about – and what it's not. In this first of a 5-part series led by podcast host Imana “Mo” Minard, MSN-Ed, RN, CENP, EMT-P, a Director of Nursing for Beaumont Farmington Hills in Michigan, our group of experts discuss what resiliency means to them, and why it's important to be thinking and talking about the myths and truths of resiliency right now. The group share their personal insights in a warm and inspirational discussion about how being prepared to ask for support is often just as important as good old strength and determination. Perhaps most importantly, our experts discuss how resiliency is best viewed as a life skill that can be learned and nurtured, rather than something that you either have or you don't. Featuring Dr. Nicolette Louissaint, Rasheda Hatchett, and Chandra Brown. The first of a 5-part podcast series features five discussions from Imana “Mo” Minard, Dr. Nicolette Louissaint, Rasheda Hatchett and Chandra Brown – four health care professionals who share their personal insights and perspectives about the importance of being resilient despite any trials or tribulations. Sponsored by Johnson and Johnson, the podcasts are candid, transparent and deliver an authentic conversation on how resiliency lets us transcend surviving and move up to a level of thriving. Our guest for this episode is Nan Henderson, DNP, MSN-Ed, RN, a former critical care nurse who is an expert in patient safety, particularly as it relates to handoffs. After a series of internal surveys revealed that handoffs were consistently an issue within her organization, Nan and her team focused on completely overhauling their process. Starting with a literature review and focus groups with the organization's nurses, Nan was eventually drawn to I-PASS, a standardized method for handoffs that greatly reduced the amount of errors involved in care transitions. Today she and Dan talk about this process in detail, as well as her overall efforts to create a strong culture of safety and reduce harm events at her facility. Move More Freely Through Life - Judy Fasone MSN-ED, RN, CTP, HWNC-BC, AHN-BC Highlights“My focus is self-care through movement, to move more freely, and I call it a moving meditation. Because if we slow our movements down and really become more aware of how things are working, it changes our whole way of being in the world.” ~Judy FasoneWhen you move more freely, it allows you to follow your heart, and this offers many more opportunities to feel joy and happiness.Combining Nurse Coaching with other modalities one is passionate about allows Nurse Coaching to become more personalized to the Nurse and to clients, patients, and communities.Nurse Coaches are entrepreneurs, and can also work in more traditional Nursing roles.Nurse Coaching reduces the use, impact, and burden to the healthcare system, because the skills of a Nurse Coach help people understand they can learn to rely on their own wisdom. It also helps them act earlier, instead of waiting for illness to happen.Shifting Nursing practice to telehealth and becoming more comfortable in the virtual space opens more opportunities for Nurse Coaches to reach into their communities.
