This video podcast conversation revolves around that mental breakdown and around Mike's current thoughts about mental illness in the workplace. Find the transcript and more at http://snapoutofitpodcast.com Mike Veny's Bio Mike Veny‘s path to becoming a speaker became evident at an early age. He convinced the staff at psychiatric hospitals to discharge him three times during his childhood. In addition to being hospitalized as a child, he was expelled from three schools, attempted suicide, and was medicated in an effort to reduce his emotional instability and behavioral outbursts. By the fifth grade, Mike was put in a special education class. Aside from getting more individualized attention from the teacher, he learned that pencil erasers make great sounds when tapped on a desk. He had no idea that drumming would become his career or his path to recovery. As an adult, Mike spent many years facilitating drum workshops for children with special needs, teaching them to channel their energy by banging a drum while also learning how to listen, focus, work together and succeed through teamwork. The project was such a hit that he continued to expand his drumming program, first to adults in recovery and eventually into the corporate setting. As a Certified Corporate Wellness Specialist®, Mike's presentations move past simply educating an audience to provide them with actionable steps they can take to change their lives and work environments. His reputation as a dynamic speaker provides confidence and peace of mind for meeting planners everywhere. The mission of his company, Mike Veny, Inc., is to support you in receiving the gift of emotional wellness through unique learning experiences designed to empower your personal and professional growth. The International Association for Continuing Education and Training has awarded his company the prestigious Accredited Provider accreditation for its continuing education programs.

Interview With My Depression - Mike VenyMemorable Moments: 7:29: When we talk about the stigma, as we do with mental health, it's actually a three part process. You transform shame through self care. When you take care of yourself, for some oddball reason, you start to feel better about yourself. You transform silence through conversation. You transform the sabotage social injustice, self destructive behavior, and suicide through connecting with others at a deeper level, which is something we are so lacking in this world.14:20: When we think about our businesses, we think about being productive and profitable and there's so many studies that show in a mentally healthy work environment, the company is more productive and profitable. So addressing it is a win for everyone.15:43: And that's what I have been seeing when I've been speaking in workplaces, is that people are slowly starting to embrace that we can't put it [mental wellness] into a box. We can't just get some breathing exercises and you're going to be okay. It's dirty. It's messy, but it's also beautiful and there's gold on the other side.16:29: If you made that courageous step of getting help, first of all, it's important to realize that it's a process to find the right treatment for yourself.18:38: We confuse escape activities and self-care. There's nothing wrong with escape activities, but it's important to distinguish the two. And when you do, you start getting on the road to a mentally healthier life. 24:01: When you participate in art activity, whether it's drawing, painting or anything, you get to have a conversation with yourself. That's all art is, a conversation with yourself and it allows you to express things that maybe you can't express in words. This week Ashanti Branch is joined by Mike Veny. Mike is a keynote speaker, who usually speaks on mental health topics, and is an author of multiple books, including Transforming Stigma: How to Become a Mental Wellness Superhero. (1:37) Ashanti's introduction. (3:33) Mike shares his background with Ashanti, including his speaking experience, his own struggles with mental health, and the mission of his company. Ashanti then relates to Mike's story with his experiences as a Vice Principal and with the Million Mask Movement. (12:30) Ashanti and Mike make their masks together. (16:37) Ashanti shares the front of his mask - funny, serious, hard-working. He reflects on being the man of the house at age 7, and what it was like to not have a consistent male figure at home as a child. (19:50) Mike shares the front of his mask - joy, confidence, calm. They both relate to the fact that they do not unplug from work well, and they discuss the struggle of having “their own brands” in the social media era. (27:24) Ashanti shares the back of his mask - fear of failure, sadness about death, loneliness, childhood trauma. He shares how talking about his mask more publicly, as opposed to doing the mask activity anonymously, is new and provides even more healing. (29:14) Mike shares the back of his mask - fear, insecurity, feeling worthless. He reflects on how he has recently been talking about and acknowledging his fear much more, and how he has been working with being present with himself more - without being dependent on the dopamine rush of social media likes. (33:18) Mike and Ashanti discuss the natural human urge to be tribal, and how this gives us all the fear of being “excommunicated” from the group. They also ponder how this translates to the “Zoom Era” of communication. (37:10) Mike takes us behind the curtain of his Youtube set up. And the men discuss how “comparison is the thief of all happiness.” (42:29) Mike Veny shares his last message for the listeners, how taking off the mask is not a form of surrender, but rather an embrace of authentic human messiness. (45:00) Mike shares his website, and what is next for him, which includes a third book and education content being posted on his website. We can all help prevent suicide. Author, speaker, drummer, and mental health advocate Mike Veny gave us a personal perspective of his journey with mental health issues from childhood into adulthood. He is now an accomplished entrepreneur as a result of finding his life's purpose through his mental illness. Michael Singleton, restaurateur, sat in the studio to discuss his plan to build a personal legacy using his gift of creating masterful food dishes, and giving back to the community through his efforts. He is currently building a Cajun chicken and seafood business from the ground up, with a background that includes incarceration, single parent-hood, and childhood behavior issues. Lastly, Loren Taylor is a business consultant and entrepreneur, who decided to take his civil responsibility to a higher level, by running for city council District 6 in Oakland, CA. (Vote Nov 6!). He shares with us his own fears about making the leap into business and the political arena. We have the discussion with the goal to help men face fears, examine and heal their minds and emotions, and to take the leap to work for self or serve their community through civil service, to attain self-sufficiency and empowerment. Any bonafide writer calls themselves a writer because they write. There’s really no other way of describing a writer than that. All you need to do to call yourself a writer is pick up the pen and begin to write. Highlights from the interview: Luis’ mother died when he was five and he was homeless for three years after that before being adopted into the United States Luis found trouble: expelled from middle school, smoking pot, getting into trouble. However, he discovered poetry when a teacher saw his potential and gave him a book of poetry by Pablo Neruda titled “The Captain’s Verses”. He went on to help with and then winning many poetry slam competitions. Now Luis is a successful entrepreneur (thrivinglaunch.com) Luis’ idea of a writer is anyone that writes. There’s really no other way of describing a writer. He coaches writers to just pick up the pen and write. Just showing up is the first piece. The next piece is to show up and share what you’ve written with other people. After that, then you can read other great writers and get to know them, try to emulate to some degree or discover what you can pick up from them to add to your own writing technique. If you’re doing these things, without a doubt, even without anyone’s help, you will become an amazing writer. Listen to the episode for the full story. http://stacybrookman.com/webinar1 () Stacy’s Journal Welcome to Stacy’s Journal! In this segment, I let you peek into my journal as I share my thoughts on a topic or resilience resource. I loved Luis’s background in oral storytelling and poetry slams. Sharing your story out loud can not only be empowering, but it can really move other people who hear it. It’s a unique way of sharing your experiences because storytelling is among the oldest forms of entertainment. It even dates back to 10th century Japan. Before you go all prickly at the thought of speaking in front of a group, consider going smaller at first, by joining a local story circle where everyone shares their stories. Or even simply reading aloud to a friend. The act of receiving someone’s story is a gift that people want to give you. By sharing your story aloud, you enable others to hear your story, acknowledge your struggles and your triumphs, and connect with you through your story. You can google writing circles or even live storytelling near your city. That’s all we have for today. Last episode, Mike Veny shared his thoughts on struggling with suicide attempts and mental health – so if you need if you know of anyone who might resonate with that topic, you might want to go back and have a listen. A mental health speaker just got real about his own mental health. Only 5% of people with chronic health conditions practice self-care says Mike Veny. “So statistically that’s zero. Basically, it’s a nonsense term that we throw around telling each other to do, but nobody’s doing it.” Mental Health is a Journey Highlights from the interview: Mike is America’s leading mental health speaker and a corporate drumming facilitator. Drumming helped him overcome his mental health challenges. Mike started his mental health journey when he was young. They manifested as behavior problems. He was the poster child for mental health issues: hospitalized three times, kicked out of three schools, attempted suicide at age 10, and was violent at home. He is still working on his mental health issues. It’s become more manageable. He doesn’t self-harm anymore, but he does have to manage his thinking. He still struggles with depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. He had a breakdown and was hospitalized early in 2017. One of the most powerful skills one can learn is to just sit with your feelings, and to admit that you are powerless over your emotions. That has been incredibly humbling and insightful. Mental health is a process, not a destination. Mental health issues are confusing and frustrating for everyone. He just wanted a solution as a kid and as an adult. He has to make the decision to be mentally healthy every day. Part of that includes 30 minutes of journaling. Sometimes he doesn’t want to do that because he knows how painful his thoughts were that day and he’d rather get a drink at the bar. But he promises to show up for himself, so he journals. In this segment, I let you peek into my journal as I share my thoughts on a topic or resilience resource. One of the things that Mike recommended as a first step for anyone with tough issues is to talk about it. In fact, this interview has been one of my favorites because Mike himself was unafraid to talk about his suicide attempts and his struggles. We often find ourselves in a culture of secrecy. Just think about how many women spoke up in 2017 about sexual harassment and who kept those secrets for sometimes decades. And think about the women who are still not speaking up because they are afraid. I get it, I’ve kept secrets I shouldn’t have too. In fact, most of my life I never spoke up for myself, until I was in my 40’s. Writing my stories helped me to get clear about them and to share them with others. Listen, you should never suffer alone. Others may share your thoughts and opinions, or even have similar issues, but may be also unwilling to speak up. By speaking your truth and sharing your stories, you encourage them to voice their opinions as well. I can teach you how to share your story in my upcoming free webinar 4 Simple, Proven Methods to Writing the First Chapter of Your Life Story in Just 7 days. It’s for writers and non-writers and it’s a great way to get started, especially if you’ve been hesitant to tell your stories. Head over to stacybrookman.com/webinar for that. Last episode, https://www.stacybrookman.com/sharonrothlichtenfeld (Sharon Roth-Lichtenfeld talked about finding peace and joy in the midst of adversity) – so if adversity has camped out at your house, you might want to go back and have a listen. Next week, we’ll interview Luis Congdon who talks about being homeless at age...
Do you have enough adversity in your life to have an adversity bio? Sharon Roth-Lichtenfeld does! This founder of Good Grief Coaching has survived hardship and heartache amazingly well. Listen to the episode to discover how she finds peace and joy in the midst of very tough circumstances. Good Grief in Adversity Highlights from the interview: A lot of research has proven that you are not born resilient. It’s a skillset that every individual has inside of them and can cultivate it at any given moment. Resilience: the skill to see things from a different point of view and recognize that inside of them they can create peace and joy no matter what happens in their life. Adversity will happen, you won’t get away from the pain, but you can go through it faster and come out the other side stronger, wiser, and meaning. We have to recognize the peace and joy that show up in the world, even in the midst of adversity and while we’re having pain. Often we see so many happy people around us, but we’re going through the pain. It’s hard for us. You may not get to happy, but you can get to peace. The goal is to get to moments of peace or seconds of peace with the goal of stretching those into longer moments. Sharon has an http://www.goodgriefcoaching.com/adversity-biography/ (adversity bio on her website). She’s had a lot to recover from. The old Sharon would push feelings aside and ignore them. Over the years she’s learned to express her feelings and allow herself to feel the pain. Everything that happens you can make something meaningful and greater and better than it is. You’re OK to have your emotions. Record your emotions, speak them and listen to them back. It’s important to express how you’re thinking and feeling It’s also important to be grateful. And be very specific. There’s ALWAYS something to be grateful for. The practice of gratitude helps train your brain to see what you do have. Listen to the episode for the full story. http://stacybrookman.com/webinar1 () Stacy’s Journal Welcome to Stacy’s Journal! In this segment, I let you peek into my journal as I share my thoughts on a topic or resilience resource. Sharon explained that you can look for joy and peace even in the midst of adversity. So many times in our lives we have to actively LOOK for joy and recognize things to celebrate. It seems counterintuitive almost. Something sad, bad, or awful has happened, but in addition to feeling those feelings you also look for joy. I don’t want to discount having feelings of sadness because those are valid and important to acknowledge and feel. But holding that alongside the search for tiny bits of joy can help you get through a tough time. Part of finding joy is being present during our days. Presence is a gift. Thinking about the past leads to regret. Thoughts of the future lead to anxiety. Keep your mind in the present if you want to experience happiness on a regular basis. Find the tiniest amount of joy that’s around you. That’s all we have for today. Last episode, http://stacybrookman.com/petershankman (Peter Shankman, whose brain runs faster than normal), shared his insight into why the ADHD brain is a gift, so if you have someone with ADHD in your life, you might want to go back and have a listen. Mike is America’s leading mental health speaker and a high energy drum circle facilitator. He delivers educational, engaging, and entertaining presentations to meetings and conferences throughout the world. Mike is fiercely committed to wellness, suicide prevention, and helping people work together more smoothly. If you are looking for a proven speaker who can address the stigma surrounding mental health and deliver a corporate drumming event, then you have come to the right place. With 15 years of experience electrifying audiences and making meeting planners look good, his mission is to empower people to connect authentically. Mike’s path to becoming a public speaker became evident at an early age. He convinced the staff at psychiatric hospitals to discharge him three times during his childhood. In addition to being hospitalized as a child, he was expelled from 3 schools, attempted suicide, and was medicated in efforts to reduce his emotional instability and behavioral outbursts. By the fifth grade, Mike was put in a special education class. Aside from getting more individualized attention from the teacher, he learned that pencil erasers make a great sound when tapped on a desk. He had no idea that drumming would become his career or his path to recovery. Event planners say remarkable things about the impact his work has their events. “MikeVeny has an innate ability to connect with people, draw them out, and get them to participate. This is not an easy task when you are responsible for closing a two and a half-day conference on a Friday.” MaryBeth Schneider – Assistant Executive Director for Training and Self-Advocacy, NYSARC “Mike’s ability to connect with students is a talent that very few adults have. His ability to address a group of 200 students and have them engaged for well over an hour shows just how deep his talent runs.” Jesicah Rolapp – Principal, Los Angeles Leadership Academy “MikeVeny participated in our 2013 community mental health awareness conference and was nothing short of outstanding. I believe his candor, humor, and transparency are applicable in a variety of corporate and community settings.” Sophie Clark – Executive Director, NAMI Washington, DC Similar benefits await when you hire Mike to take your event to the next level. What sets Mike apart from other speakers is his authenticity and his straightforward, easy-to-understand tools that audience members can apply immediately. It’s that simple! You can feel confident having Mike as your keynote speaker or workshop facilitator. Mike’s perspectives have been featured on ABC, NBC, and CBS news. Now, have you known someone who lives with mental health challenges or do you want to learn to better manage your own mental health challenges or even better, how do you really transform the stigma surrounding mental health? Well, our very important, special, VIP guest is going to take care of all that and more. How are things today Mike? Mike Veny: I'm doing wonderful. How are you Robert? Robert Plank: Better than ever. Just getting kicked back on this Monday morning. Ready to do some of the entrepreneurial life style stuff. Mike Veny: Cool, and hello to your listeners out there. Robert Plank: I'm super glad that they're listening and that you're here. Could you tell us about yourself, Mike, and what makes you different and special? Mike Veny: What makes me different and special ... Robert Plank: Oh yeah. Mike Veny: I'm Mike! That's what makes me different and special. No, I am a mental health speaker and I'm also a drummer and I have a very unique business that really helps people who are struggling with mental health issues, a big topic in this country right now. At the same time, I work with corporate America with drumming to teach adults how to work better together in the workplace like me. Robert Plank: Interesting. Cool, so I mean out of all the stuff you've listed, the drumming sounds like super crazy and out there, which is something I love, so can you tell us about that drumming stuff? Mike Veny: Well, I started playing drums in the fifth grade and the reason I started drumming was because I heard it on Sesame Street and I always just liked the sounds of the drums and for some reason I was struggling with mental health issues and behavioral health issues. In fact, I was hospitalized three times in a psychiatric hospital and expelled from three schools for behavior problems and actually tried to take my own life at age ten. Drumming was the only thing that calmed me down and made me feel good. It worked better than the other medication they were giving me. I decided to become a professional drummer, not just because it is cool. I mean, it is pretty cool if you're a drummer, but also because it was my medication. I'm thirty-seven years old and it's still my medication that I use and what I love about it is, I'm able to share it with others. I do a very advanced form of what we call drum circles, and a drum circle is typically when you have people in a circle drumming and jamming along to grooves, but I have created a lot of activities and games for adults to use with drumming to not only play great music, but to learn some lessons about working with each other. Robert Plank: That's awesome. Did I hear that right that you don't medicate or anything like that? It's all just these drumming exercises? Mike Veny: Yeah and when it comes to mental health, and for any of you listening out there, seek the guidance of a doctor whenever you have any kind of issue. I worked with my therapist and just basically came to the conclusion that I was going to try what we call alternative medication, which is exercise, meditation, good friends and music. Robert Plank: Cool, so instead of maybe like the short cut way, which seems easy, but seems to have these other side effects, you kind of found your own way to make this thing work. Mike Veny: Yeah,
