What is Carbon MineralizationCarbon mineralization is a naturally occurring chemical process that occurs when carbon dioxide becomes “mineralized” through a chemical reaction. The chemical reaction occurs when certain rocks, most often in deep underground igneous and metamorphic formations, are exposed to carbon dioxide. Carbon mineralization holds greater amounts of carbon than carbon storage in sedimentary reservoirs, as the chemical reactions in carbon mineralization create new carbonate minerals like calcium carbonate.Carbon mineralization is potentially an important solution for reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide, as the mineralized carbon cannot escape to the atmosphere, so serves as long-term carbon storage. This process can be artificially sped up to sequester greater amounts of atmospheric carbon and prevent atmospheric warming. Mine waste and industrial sites also hold potential for fast carbon mineralization as crushed rocks can be more easily used for mineralization and at lower cost than injecting underground rocks. Surface carbon mineralization can also help mitigate onsite carbon emissions by reducing energy usage.Carbon mineralization is not without risks, including the potential to trigger earthquakes or change the pressure profiles of rock formations. Current methods also require significant water use. In the United States, the Pacific Northwest holds the greatest potential as it is abundant in basalt rocks. States such as Minnesota,Wisconsin, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Texas, and Hawaii hold potential for deep underground infections. Crushed rock and mine sites all across the country also have the potential for carbon mineralization. Why Concrete is AttractiveUnlike other methods of carbon mineralization, storing carbon in concrete can serve a dual purpose by also reducing the emissions associated with the concrete and cement industries. Currently, the cement industry emits approximately eight percent of global carbon dioxide emissions. It also comes with less potential to disrupt rock formations. For guest Dr. Erica Dodds, who sees financeability as key to the success of any carbon removal technology, the concrete industry's size is an advantage, because companies bundling carbon removal with concrete can profit from an existing market with plenty of demand. Dodds says that state and local governments can go a long way towards supporting these approaches by establishing procurement plans that require government infrastructure projects to source concrete from carbon removing producers.Foundation for Climate Restoration The Foundation for Climate Restoration (F4CR) is a non-profit organization that works to restore Earth's climate to pre-industrial levels. The organization's philosophy is to restore our atmosphere primarily through carbon removal to protect our planet for future generations. To fulfill this mission, F4CR works to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while simultaneously building capacity for carbon dioxide removal. F4CR aims to remove 1,000 gigatons (Gt) of carbon by 2050, as “the IPCC recognizes that we will need 100-1,000 gigatons (Gt) of carbon removal by the end of the century just to meet 1.5 degree C warming goals.” Who is Our Guest?Dr. Erica Dodds serves as the Chief Operating Office at F4CR and is committed to climate activism and poverty reduction. Dodds believes that today's climate youth activists are the key to the fight against climate change and restoring a safe and healthy world. She holds a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Evaluation, an M.A. in International Development Administration, and has experience working with NGOs across the world along with the Evaluation Office of the International Labor Organization in Geneva. Get your certification while you are there… for free! Also, later in the day tomorrow, I will be speaking at the University of Las Vegas Hospitality College speaking with students there on “Restaurant and Hotel Technology.” That is going to be a blast and am really looking forward to that!I know this show was supposed to go live last week but we had to jump on the recap of MURTEC and, I promise you, this week's show was worth the wait. As previously mentioned, living on the operator side for most of my life, I had a very defined methodology for maintaining vendor relationships. I would say they were more partnerships than anything. When you engage with a vendor you need to have buy-in from both sides and you have to willing to work together to make it a fruitful and long-lasting relationship. But what does that really mean? What do vendor's think about us?My guest, for today's conversation, is none other than Bob Gibson who is a seasoned veteran supporting Global Enterprise customers with complex Franchisor/Franchisee models, building out GTM strategies to support these relationships with his Hospitality, Retail, and Technology experience. With over thirty plus years Bob is a SAAS veteran who understands how to build systems to reduce churn while helping overall revenue growth and increasing net revenue retention. His areas of expertise include but are not limited to Strategic Selling models, Go to Market Strategies and execution, Customer Service team builds and execution, Support Desk build and execution and Thought Leadership. He has over 20 years of experience in point of sale and served in leadership roles at Micros, Oracle and JOLT. F4CR aims to remove 1,000 gigatons (Gt) of carbon by 2050, as “the IPCC recognizes that we will need 100-1,000 gigatons (Gt) of carbon removal by the end of the century just to meet 1.5 degree C warming goals.”Dr. Erica DoddsDr. You really have to learn and grow into that field.”“It's really about knowing yourself and your own strengths, your own weaknesses, your values, and your beliefs. That's really foundational into becoming a strong leader. Because if you can't understand yourself and what you're good at, it's really hard to serve others.”“I think some of my best advice is, you know, really, just to be yourself, don't try to be one of the men, it's okay to be different than your male counterparts. And honestly, that's the value that you bring to the table because what makes you different is really what sets you apart from the rest of the team.”“Your brand has got to be something that's authentic to you.”“Have fun. Life is too short to be in a career that doesn't energize you or jazz you every day or to work with people that don't respect you [...] life is really too short. Louis and Jim welcome Aron Myers to the podcast! Aron experienced addiction as a child through his father and this molded his approach to life as an adult. He found himself dealing with rejection from a young age within his family and dealing with addiction (even with never having touched a substance). Aron developed a pattern of being a "forced giver" — not allowing others to give to him and always seeking approval through actions. He found himself unable to accept himself as being worthy of the love, admiration and community of those close to him. In his words, Aron needing to "be seen” rather than being comfortable with how he was seen. Ultimately this conversation is about the life philosophy Aron holds — helping people to create their own story, and honoring their own voice. This is an active decision Aron makes, taking responsibility to support those around him every single day. Aron Myers brings a passion and love to the conversation of support; of those in need, of those we care for, and of ourselves. Aron Myers is the Principal Leadership Strategist at A-Game Leadership and holds a master's degree from the Case Western Reserve University's, nationally ranked Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences. He is an alumnus of Ideal Coaching Global and received training from the Mandel School of Nonprofit Management. Aron holds a certification as Professional Certified Coach from International Federation of Coaches and member of the National Association of Social Workers, and has excelled in leadership positions for more than thirty years and has held senior leadership positions for over 20 years, including Chief Operating Office at a national AIDS service organization, National Director for Child Welfare Programs and currently is the Principal and Chief Leadership Strategist/Coach at the A Game Leadership Group. Aron is a seasoned coach working with individuals and organizations to create their professional and personal A-Game. People and processes are at the heart of the work I have done for the past 20+ years. Whether working in a corporation, large law firm or entrepreneurial environment, I have seen the value of meeting people where they are, of frankly and honestly assessing process and of making smart changes openly and deliberately. I excel at helping people with a lot going on to cut through the ephemera and to get to the core of the matter. My ability to connect disparate dots to provide meaning and insight makes me uniquely able to help my clients get to what is important so they can live happier and easier lives. I am a graduate of Wellesley College and Georgetown University Law Center and a member of the Maryland and DC Bars. I have worked both as a litigator and administrator in large law firms. I have managed hundreds of people in complex, high-stakes and high-stress environments and have seen first hand the impact of having the right people, in the right process at the right time. More recently, I was the Chief Operating Office of an entrepreneurial investment firm. On this episode of how + Y I had a lot of fun chatting with the Chief Operating Office of Century 21 Heritage House Anthony Montenaro. Anthony began working with us at C21 about a year and a half ago and I think I speak for many of my coworkers when I say that it's been a pleasure getting to know him. Not only does he have it together on the business front but he's a great person that brings so much good energy to the office on a daily basis. Among other topics we discuss how COVID-19 may affect the local market as well as the real estate industry as a whole. I think it's safe to say that many of the innovations created out of this pandemic are probably here to stay, and that's not a bad thing. As we move to a point where COVID-19 no longer controls our lives it's my hope that we don't forget the lessons learned during it. The importance of adaptation and innovation in order to keep the wheels turning has been a massive contributor towards the upcoming resurrection of our local local economy. Let’s get started. This week we discuss, The New York Times Grows Digital Revenue by 14%, Should Podcasters Welcome Spotify with Open Arms?, and How do Listeners Find Out about new Podcasts? The New York Times had their Q2 earnings report and their CEO, Mark Thompson, said they grew digital advertising revenue by 14% which includes their podcasting revenue which primarily comes from their hit show, “The Daily”. He said, “These gains on the digital side were more than enough to offset familiar secular declines in print, and total advertising revenue grew slightly.”Meredith Kopit, the Chief Operating Office said, “there is real demand for audio advertising in association with quality unique content that has big audiences. And so we're optimistic that over time, our other podcasts in addition to The Daily will become meaningful ad products.”Should podcasters welcome Spotify with open arms? Bradley Chambers wrote an article on 9to5mac and he gives his perspective on this question.Bradley argues that even though Spotify has acquired Gimlet, he still believes they will keep the market open. He states, “ For this industry to grow as we all want it to, we need more people listening to more shows. With Apple, Google, and Spotify all basing 99% of their directory on the open RSS standard, we have preserved the free market.”

WIHI - A Podcast from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement
Date: July 21, 2011 Featuring: Stuart H. Altman, PhD, Sol C. Chaikin Professor of National Health Policy and former Dean of The Heller School for Social Policy and Management, Brandeis University Jeffrey Selberg, MHA, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Office, Institute for Healthcare Improvement What's the value of value-based purchasing? This is the term used for a new initiative of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) that is perhaps the government’s boldest move yet to tie hospital reimbursement to quality, focused initially on 13 measures, including patient satisfaction. The intent is pretty clear, but how likely is it that the new “carrot,” in the form of bonus payments starting in October 2012, will accelerate better patient care and usher in a new day of financial expectations?IHI’s Jeff Selberg says the answer isn’t clear BUT, as a former hospital executive, he can’t imagine sitting on his hands waiting to see how things will play out. In other words, to Jeff, the handwriting is on the wall, and depending on how hospital leaders react, the money is either on the table or eventually being taken off the table and…most importantly, it’s not going to be put back. There is just no viable future, he says, for a health care system that’s hospital-centric, episode-centric, and procedure-centric. And it’s not just CMS that’s throwing down the gauntlet. So are employers and private insurers. The good news is that some health care providers are getting the message; Selberg hopes we can all learn from their example.Stuart Altman doesn’t disagree. But the seasoned health care economist has been around too long, and in and out of government often enough, to know how hard it is to forge policy and payment reforms of the CMS value-based sort. Decades of doing things differently is a hard habit to break. On the other hand, like Jeff, Stuart wouldn’t advise hospitals to sit this one out, and he worries about serious unintended consequences for patients if the hospital system doesn’t develop new business models built upon delivering high quality most of all.WIHI host Madge Kaplan welcomes Stuart Altman and Jeff Selberg for an interesting discussion.
On episode 5 of the Leading Ladies of the Motor Industry podcast, Steph is joined by Lesley Wooley, Chief Operating Office of the Institute of the Motor Industry.
Luz Urrutia, the global head of retail at Oportun, has been carrying the same credit card in her wallet for 30 years. Having moved from her native Venezuela to the U.S. to study finance at Georgia State University, Luz was thrilled when she landed her first job in the banking industry – only to have her credit card application rejected by the same bank where she worked! Having little or no credit can make adjusting to life in a new country extremely onerous. In our conversation, Luz points out that anything from getting a job to renting an apartment and hooking up utilities is often impossible without a FICO score. Currently, almost half of the Hispanic community in the U.S. is underserved. Luz decided years ago to help the 25 million individuals who represent the un- and under-banked in her community by offering responsible credit-building and affordable loans. Before moving to California to broaden her mission, Luz co-founded and served as President and Chief Operating Office for El Banco de Nuestra Comunidad in Atlanta. Since then, her career has been characterized by a relentless drive to use technology and creative techniques to “score the unscorable” and serve those overlooked by traditional financial institutions. Oportun, formerly Progreso Financiero, was founded in 2005 with the same goal of empowering underserved Hispanic consumers. Its proprietary technology platform scores applicants, even those who do not have credit, and enables Oportun to provide a highly personal experience with back-office efficiency. Headquartered in Redwood City, CA, the customer experience at Oportun is designed with the Hispanic customer in mind. This experience is disseminated through a network of more than 160 stores in five states, often conveniently co-located with or near Hispanic grocery stores, are open 7 days a week into the evening, and staffed by team members who speak Spanish. In recognition of Oportun’s goals of increasing economic opportunity for its clients, promoting community development, and serving low-income or underserved communities, Oportun was certified by the United States Department of Treasury as a Community Development Financial Institution in November 2009 and re-certified in October 2013. I spoke with Luz at the Center for Financial Services Innovation’s (CFSI) EMERGE conference in Austin, on whose board she has served since 2004 (full disclosure, I am also on the board). Luz has often been recognized for her commitment to improving the lives of underserved financial consumers, including being named as 2009’s Latina Business Woman of the Year and American Banker’s “Community Banker of the Year” in 2006. Perhaps the greatest reward for Luz, however, is the joy she feels pursuing her mission every day. In our interview you can gladden in her words imbued of passion and excitement (you’ll just have to trust that they were accompanied by a brilliant smile!).
