Olympic rowing great Mahe Drysdale has bid an emotional farewell to his rowing family, officially announcing his retirement on Thursday morning. Drysdale, 42, has dominated the single scull for more than a decade, winning gold at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics. At the 2008 Beijing games Drysdale was suffering from a gastro bug, when he threw-up and fainted after crossing the finish line third. He had to be carried to the medal ceremony. Drysdale missed out on NZ's Tokyo Olympic team after Jordon Parry claimed the single sculls spot. "I'd made the decision that I'd retire in Tokyo," he told Checkpoint.

Journalist, filmmaker (https://gazafightsforfreedom.com/) and Empire Files (https://twitter.com/EmpireFiles) host Abby Martin (https://twitter.com/AbbyMartin) refused to sign a pro-Israel pledge which promised to not participate or advocate the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. She was asked to sign the oath in January, 2020 when she was set to deliver a keynote speech at Georgia Southern University. When she refused, her talk was canceled. In February, 2020 Martin, together with the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund (PCJF), filed a federal free-speech lawsuit against the University System of Georgia, for the “unconstitutionality” of its decision. The law suit reads that, "The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia... conditioned an invitation to speak at an academic conference on the Plaintiff agreeing in writing to abandon her First Amendment-protected journalism about and political advocacy for the rights of Palestinians. The Complaint alleges violations of the First and Fourteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution under 42 U.S.C. § 1983." Abby talks about the status of her lawsuit, the media landscape, censorship, free speech and covering taboo subjects including, but not limited to, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict

Remember there used to be a MLB statistic for GWRBI - Game Winning RBI's? The one that gives your team a lead it never relinquishes. Because players could get the GWRBI conceivably (and in reality) in the first inning @MLB junked it after 1988 which was about 8 years too long. One of our 'Almost' guys Keith Hernandez has been in no way helped by the stat that he has the all time record for GWRBIs. Because and rightly so, it's a dumb stat! Are pitcher starts as important as they used to be? How about appearances? Are RBI's an overvalued statistic? How about Sacrifice Flies which have changed a few times over the years. With better analytics and data baseball statistics have become more complicated and difficult to understand. Do you know how to calculate WAR (wins above replacement)? Or the difference between fWAR and bWAR? Or FIP (fielding independent of pitching)? Few fans do or are necessarily all that interested. Fans still like some of the old fashioned stats - HRs, BA, RBI's, K's. We do too but the modern game of baseball calls for modernized stats and progress will not be halted in the ever present search for better players and better player production. This is our longest episode so far. We did not expect it but once we get to talking it's hard to stop!Correction: Hack Wilson had 191 RBI's in 1930. David Peterson (not Doug) is the potential #5 starter for the Mets.
Here at Almost Cooperstown we believe there's room for more at the Inn. We're not talking about boxing BTW! When it comes to Gold Gloves (only awarded since 1957), a player who is a borderline Hall of Famer (an 'Almost' guy we like to say), can be pushed over the top by superior fielding and a collection of Gold Gloves. There have been 8 players to win GG's in both leagues which is kind of hard to do since often the incumbent would need to be unseated. In the past Gold Gloves seemed to be earned on reputation as much as anything else. Not that the winners were not good or great fielders, more that some of the winners are players you would not expect (like Pete Rose) and were not renowned for their defensive prowess. Today advanced analytics from Bill James, FanGraphs and other sources create the Fielding Bible Awards which are a more data-centric approach than traditional fielding %. Fielding range is more important than it's ever been to separating a good from a great fielder. How important are pitcher Gold Gloves? Are there separate awards for RF, CF, LF? Who has won the most GGs? We answer these questions and a few more! Thanks for listening and if you have an idea or comment you can email us at almostcooperstown@gmail.com or tweet to us @AlmostCoop or hit us on our FB page. And Tuesday is AC Trivia Day!

Andrew is a retail veteran with nearly 50 (!!!) years of experience in a variety of leadership positions across huge retail brands, such as Harrods, Saks Fifth Avenue and Karstadt. I initially met Andrew while I still worked in consulting and I have had the pleasure of working with Andrew on several occasions. Why I wanted to bring Andrew to GVO is that not only am I inspired by him each time we meet but I truly admire his approach to life, his mindset and gusto how he approaches everything. After listening to this episode I'm sure you can feel some of his special energy! In the episode we talk about the importance of passion, why confidence is key, what (really) makes Andrew happy, how he keeps thriving, and how he's experienced failures in his life. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of “Almost Famous” (2000), Chance and Noah look back at an era-jumping quartet of music movies about fictional bands. This week, it's “That Thing You Do!” (1996), “Dreamgirls” (2006), “Rock Star” (2001) and, of course, Cameron Crowe's aforementioned neo-classic about a 15-year-old Rolling Stone writer coming of age in a tour bus. So hop on, and let's zoom to the top of those completely fabricated charts! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theplaylist/message
On the new episode of 'Indiecast,' Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen reflect on twenty years of Cameron Crowe's 'Almost Famous,' using their background as real-life music critics to examine the accuracy of the central plot (there is literally no way that a publicist would let you spend several weeks on the road with a band for a profile), the depiction of Lester Bangs, and whether Stillwater is actually even a good band at all. Check out Hyden's full essay about the film here. In this week's Recommendation Corner, Steven is spreading the good word about William Tyler's new album 'New Vanitas,' while Ian is pointing toward 'I'll Figure This Out,' the latest from Milwaukee's Barely Civil. This week's show is with Arthur Haines, who describes himself as a forager, ancestral skills mentor, author, public speaker and botanical researcher... but that's just because he's so humble! In reality, he's an oracle of deep knowledge and understanding of the natural world. He's been helping people explore human ecology for over 20 years, with the mission of developing deep awareness of and connection to nature, promoting individual health, and fostering self-reliance. If understanding botany was a super-power (and it probably is), Arthur is a true super hero! He grew up in the western mountains of Maine, a rural area that was home to swift streams known for their trout fishing. He spent most of his childhood in the Sandy River Valley hiking, tracking, and foraging. Arthur now runs the Delta Institute of Natural History in Canton, Maine, where he teaches human ecology, focusing on the values of foraging, wildcrafting medicine, and primitive living skills. He continues to spend a great deal of his free time practicing his skills as a modern hunter-gatherer. As a research botanist for the New England Wildflower Society, he recently completed a comprehensive flora of the New England region entitled “Flora Novae Angliae” and has authored over twenty publications in peer-reviewed journals and books, including naming species of plants new to science. His series of YouTube videos has inspired thousands of people interested in foraging wild edible and medicinal plants. In this conversation, we spoke about the importance of community - another of Arthur's passions and areas of deep knowledge... Arthur explains what he means when he talks about 'community' (and it might be a little different to your definition), why being part of a community is in accordance with our evolutionary expectations, and how these days most of us lack community (as Arthur said in this show 'Almost everything about the current structure of society stands in stark contradiction to how we lived as people prior to the agricultural revolution.'), and what the issues with that are. We ended on a positive note with Arthur's practical suggestions of how we can all create community in today's modern world. I'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment below. What you'll learn from this episode: Human's real need for community sits alongside other aspects that we understand are critical to human health that have been formed by our evolutionary history, such as food and movement. The issues of going it alone include conditions that are considered the norm in modern culture such as anxiety, depression, shame, struggles and stresses. Arthur defines community as 'place and commons'. In indigenous communities, everyone held the land in common, they all have common landscape that they get to feed themselves from, heal themselves from, and get to connect to that place that they share with all of the members of their community. True communities are bound by a cohesion created by a common needs and is exemplified by real equality and wealth distribution, such as indirect reciprocal gift economy. Everyone is in it together and no-one gets to step outside the stresses that the community is experiencing. We are typically held back from creating real community because of our attachment to convenience and comfort - we are used to privacy and doing what we want when we want. We can take baby steps in this direction by keep our communities small enough so we can know every member deeply, have a connection to our common place, and no hierarchy: everyone is equal, no matter their age or ability.

I almost changed forever the entire way people define relationships. The word "commitment" would have a new meaning. More babies would be born. I'm thinking BIG. Sometimes you want to try an idea and you don't let yourself think about money. If an idea is good, money is a side effect. Ideas are the real currency. I met a brand new couple for breakfast. J and K. They told me they just had the "going steady" conversation. "How'd you guys meet?" "J-Swipe". Or something like that. I forget. It was an online dating app. "What does 'going steady' mean when you are both in your 40s?" I asked. J was in his 40s. K wasn't. I wondered if 'going steady' meant that he gave her a ring or something. There's only so many more 'going steady's you have left in you at that age. They both pulled out their phones. They were looking at each other's phone and then showing me. "We deleted all of the dating apps on our phone," she said. But they were both peering at each other's firm. They needed confirmation. Hmmmm! Idea: The "Going Steady" App Both sides of the couple sign in to the app. Then they select the other person. Then when both sides select each other, the app deletes all the dating apps on their phone. If they ever download a dating app again, the other side gets notified by email. Or if they "de-select" each other from "Going Steady" then both sides get notified by email. Simple! Extras: - Notify FB and Twitter that they are "Going Steady" - Keep track of anniversaries, gifts, places they go, significant memories, etc. - Notify friends of anniversaries, etc. BOOM! The next day I wrote up the "spec", which was actually just similar to what I wrote above. I logged into freelancer.com. I opened a new project and cut and pasted my Spec in there. It was weird to read prior chats I had had on the site. Since the last time I had uploaded a project in there was in 2006. A customer service representative popped up a window and asked if I need help. I said, "Sure, why not?" Meanwhile, within ten minutes I had about ten people bid to do my project. I included in the Spec that they had to not only complete the app in 30 days but upload to the Apple store, the Google Play store, and do basic marketing for me. People were bidding from China, India, and Kenya. The average bid was $1000. I chatted with each one of them to make sure they understood what I was asking. My basic test was this question: can an app on Android and Apple detect and delete other apps on Android and Apple? The customer service representative recommended a developer as well. This developer cost more than $1000. More like $3500. That's ok. I just wanted a good job done. A small price to pay to change the future of evolution. I asked this developer the same question. Some of the developers would not upload to the stores or do any marketing. I crossed them off. Others didn't seem to understand my question about detecting other apps on the phone. I crossed them out. I didn't want any communication problems with people from the opposite side of the world. Finally, the recommended developer said, "I know you can do this on Android but not sure on Apple. Let me research." Five minutes later he came back. "It's impossible to do this on Apple." We tried to figure out a work-around. Like if the device owner gave permissions, etc. But there was no work-around. "Ok," I said, "thanks for your help." End of idea. End of project. Total time it cost me: 45 minutes, from writing the spec, logging into the site, creating the project, talking to the developers. Total money: I paid $29 to have a customer service representative help me. Success? Failure? Neither. It was an idea. I did the execution basics to see if I should pursue further. It didn't. But I learned a lot. What it would cost to make an app, I learned a bit more about the Apple store, and I went through the process of trying to find a developer. Do one "execution step" each day and it compounds into success. I wrote J. "Remember that idea we spoke about? Here's what I did." And I described. He wrote back. "That's the difference between you and me. We had an idea I was a lazy sack of s**t and you went ahead and tried do it." Meanwhile, he's produced some of the best TV shows of all time. But I almost changed the worldwide definition of "Going steady". I almost increased the world population. Some people say, "Almost doesn't count". But I say, " 'Almost' is is better than nothing. And 'Almost' every day eventually turns into Everything." -- Shortcuts - [24:20] - The top freelancers on the site are making seven figures a year. And the average job makes $166. Halloween is a time of screams and fright, horrible faces and hideous (1)costumes. It's a time when people who love to be scared can fill up on that experience(2). Those of us who don't like witches, skeletons, zombies, and Draculas hope that the day of Halloween passes quickly. Though the roots of this holiday are ancient, it has become a very modern celebration. By this, I mean that each year Halloween is updated. My almost daily(3) trips to Walmart showed me that that is very true. If you want to give your neighborhood a full Halloween night of fright, you have to jump into the world of shopping. It's no longer enough to carve out a pumpkin(4), put a candle in it, and leave it on your front door step. Your house has to undergo(5) a full theatrical production. While most houses in our town had not been decorated, there were some that should have received awards for their effort and creativity. We took our two youngest children out to 'trick or treat', and we knew just where (6)to go to make the occasion memorable. The neighborhood up the road, ironically next to the cemetery, has one particular house that has to be visited. We weren't sure which road the house was on, but as we walked along the dark road, flashes of blue light and sounds of screaming were coming from the next street. When we got there we found a house on a steep hill, fake fog floating all around, robotic spiders and skeletons, and three humans at the top of a very long flight of stairs, but they certainly didn't look human. My children, who are usually very brave, stood still and stared. They didn't want to go up the stairs. “Come on,” I said. “I'll go first.” I took my daughter by the hand, made a joke about the silly dressed up teenagers who were trying to look like zombies, and up we went(7). My son followed right behind me. By the time we got to the house, I was actually a little scared, but I didn't admit it. The zombie teenagers were hideous, and the atmosphere was even worse. Was it worth going through this(8) just to get some candy? Well, we didn't stay to find out. Before long we were back at home, and the kids were counting out their candies. They soon forgot about the house of fright as they made their Halloween harvest disappear. 'Hideous' is another word for ugly or scary. Or more like really ugly or really scary. a. At the Halloween party I couldn't look at him, his mask was so hideous. b. That chair is just hideous, plus it looks terrible with the rest of the furniture. 'To fill up on an experience' means to have a complete experience, or a lot of it. This expression can be used in different ways. a. The night at the opera really filled us up; it was a wonderful experience. b. You should fully experience what it is to be a patient, if you want to be a doctor. 'Almost'. I'm sure that you're very familiar with this word; however, it is used in many different ways in a sentence. In this instance I am using it in front of expressions of time and routine. a. My almost weekly visits to the spa soon stopped my migraines. b. His almost hourly snacking makes him fat. c. Their almost constant complaining drives me nuts! 'It's not enough to …' It is useful to learn how to copy this sentence format. a. It's not enough to appologize; he needs to give back the money he stole. b. It's not enough to talk about the dinner party; we need to plan it and invite people. c. It's not enough to eat right; we have to exercise as well. 'To undergo' is used for surgery, and for building renovation. Sometimes we use 'to go through'. a. Our house will undergo a complete renovation. b. You'll have to undergo some surgery if you want your hip to function. 'Just' in the given sentence 'we knew just where to go' has a special meaning. It's the same as saying 'exactly' or 'precisely'. a. He knew just what to say to make me feel better. b. She knew just what to cook on a cold wintery day. c. I'm sure they'll know just what to do. 'Up we went.' You know in English we usually always use the verb before a word like up. But, if you have already given the context of going up by mentioning stairs, or a mountain, or an elevator (etc), then, a phrase like 'up we went' or 'up we go' can be used as the final mention of the action. a. We will dive down into the cave. Come on, down we go! b. We thought a long time about going into the Halloween house, and finally in we went. c. Your plane will climb to 35,000 ft.. You'll get in your seat, put on your seat belt, and up you'll go. 'To go through something' has 2 meanings. It is the physical act of passing from one place into another. Or it is the same as 'to experience'. a. I can't go through another night of no sleep. b. They went through the forest and out into the field. c. She'll go through another divorce if she's not careful. Please join me on my FACEBOOK page Anna Fromacupofenglish; you're all welcome.
