Read Online“Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him at once.”  John 13:31–32Jesus speaks this line about Himself being glorified immediately after Judas leaves the supper to go forth to betray Him. Jesus had just finished washing the feet of His disciples, and soon He would finish the Last Supper, go to the Garden of Gethsemane, be arrested, beaten and crucified. And this was to all take place through the betrayal of one of the Twelve. Yet rather than speak of these pending events in a fearful or anxious way, Jesus points to the glory He will receive through them.Everything in life has the potential to become an instrument of the glory of God. Even our sin can end in God's glory when we repent and receive God's forgiveness. It will not be our sin that glorifies God but His mercy poured forth from the Cross upon us that gives Him glory.The same is true with the events of Holy Week. When looked at from a purely human perspective, what Jesus endured was tragic and horrific. One of His closest companions betrayed Him. The religious leaders of the time betrayed Him. The civil authorities betrayed Him. And all of the disciples except John fled in fear as Jesus was betrayed. But Jesus did not look at any of this through human eyes alone. He saw it all from the eternal perspective and clearly taught that all of these seemingly tragic events would end in His glory.When we commit ourselves to the following of Christ, we can be assured that we will also share in His Cross. We will experience the sins of others, encounter mistreatment, and have to endure various sufferings. The question for us all as we have these encounters in life is whether we will endure them in anger and despair or with the hopeful confidence of our Lord. Again, everything in life has the potential to become an instrument of the glory of God. Nothing in life has the power to steal away that glory when we keep our eyes upon the will of God and His power to use all for His glory. Reflect, today, upon your call in life to see everything from the divine perspective. If you are upset, angry, despairing or confused at times, know that God wants to bring clarity and grace to every situation. He wants to show you how you can share in His divine mission of transforming every evil into God's glory. Seek out the ways that your life must give glory to God in everything, especially those things that seem incapable of being used for good. The more an experience in life seems incapable of being used for God's glory, the more that experience is capable of giving true glory to God. My glorious Lord, You brought forth good from all things. Even the grave evil of Your betrayal was transformed into a manifestation of Your glory. I offer to You, dear Lord, all that I endure in life and pray that You will be glorified in all things, and that my life will continually become a manifestation of the glory due Your holy name. Readings for the 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Ezekiel 18:25-28; Matthew 21:28-32Jesus tells us a parable - A man had two sons...but it may not be the one that comes to mind when you hear that phrase. Today we are presented with two ways of being in the world. We can live inside of our small world, or decide to leave that behind for life in the Kingdom. Our initial reaction is often one of "no", not dissimilar to the parable we hear. But thank God that God gives us time to change our minds. He rejects the any-cause divorce of Hillel.Familiarity with this debate is crucial if we are to appreciate the interaction between Jesus and the Pharisees.Yet Mark doesn't mention the exceptions. In Mark 10 it sounds like all divorce is wrong. (Which it is—often—but many times it's not the problem it's the solution.)Knowledge of the ancient world is essential for accurate translation of ancient languages, balanced and nuanced theology, and appreciation of the topography of scripture.By 2nd C, the interpretation of the House of Hillel rules. “Any cause” divorce is now the only kind among the Jews. The condensed language of the remarriage passages was no longer intelligible. Critical facts relating to divorce and remarriage were forgotten.But we're in a great position to be better informed. Since 1850 every major commentary on Matt has covered the S/H disagreement. Sadly, many scholars don't pass on this information to their church. Most predictably follow the party line of their denomination. Let's not do that. You can study the ancient sources and become informed. If you want to do some historical study, I-B's books are very helpful.Let's do our best to respect God's Word, taking into account these ancient sources. (As for 2nd-4th century Church Fathers, we will address these in the final talk.) By “ancient sources” I mean essential background information yielded by rabbinic Judaism, Roman law, and numerous M&D documents.2. Matt 5:31-32Jesus overstates (hyperbole) to grab our attention. Immorality wasn't the only ground for divorce in the Bible. Jesus is saying that divorce must be justified."Makes her commit adultery?" The woman becomes defiled, or adulterated—assuming she remarries; she isn't automatically an adulteress.Matt 5:32 literally understood directly contradicts Deut 24:1-4, which permitted remarriage after divorce.3. HyperboleCommon in Semitic speech and throughout the Bible. Examples: Hate your father and mother; everything is possible for the one who believes; speaking in languages of angels; faith moving mountains.This section of Matt 5: v.28 is full of hyperbole.Examples: lust is adultery in the heart (v.28); pluck out an eye (v.29); lop off a hand (v.30); remarriage is adultery (v.32).Elsewhere in Matthew, consider 6:3; 7:5; 19:24; and 23:24.Thus interpreting this part of Matt 5 figuratively is well precedented and exemplified.Non-literal interpretations don't necessarily weaken the force of Scripture, or make it impossible to settle on a clear meaning. Jesus clearly (and shockingly) teaches:Monogamy; divorce not compulsory in the case of adultery (“allowed,” not commanded”); marriage not compulsory for anybody; hence infertility is not a legitimate ground for divorce; divorce for "any matter" is invalid—and so remarriage after this divorce is adulterous; marriage to be lifelong—it's against God's will to break up a marriage.4. Jesus' positionHe's not saying:Divorce is always wrong—but there must be valid grounds.Sexual immorality is the only ground for divorce—only that this is the topic of Deut 24.Remarriage is wrong. Craig Keener: “If the exception [of Matt 5 and 19] permits divorce, the average first-century Jewish reader would ​assume that it permitted remarriage, unless explicitly informed otherwise; part of the very nature of the divorce document was to free the wife to remarry.”Divorced persons are still mystically bound to their ex-spouse, unless that person has died.Those remarried without proper grounds must return to the previous spouse.He doesn't tell the Samaritan woman to return to her first—or fifth—husband.Two wrongs don't make a right: breaking up remarriages based on any-cause divorce and requiring a return to one's original spouse. (This is actually forbidden in Deut 24:4.)We should disfellowship the divorcee, or glare at them disapprovingly.He is saying:Divorce for just "any cause" is invalid—and so remarriage after this divorce is adulterous.We should respect God's original plan: monogamy with fidelity.Celibacy is also good.Even if a divorce is justified, we should be slow to carry it out. Consider God's "divorce" of  Israel and Judah.Marriage is meant to be lifelong—it's against God's will to break up a marriage. Work at your marriage!5. ConclusionThere are some things in the Bible that we don't understand without some background information, or without the benefit of careful study.The ancient dispute: Is any-cause divorce legitimate, or are grounds necessary, as stipulated in Torah?Jesus' teaching turned popular teaching on D&R on its head—not because he was forbidding D or R, but because most religious teachers had drifted so far from God's holy standards.Next: Paul's on divorce and remarriage in 1 Cor 7. We depart from the Jewish world and enter the Greco-Roman world.

“Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him at once.” John 13:31–32Jesus speaks this line about Himself being glorified immediately after Judas leaves the supper to go forth to betray Him. Jesus had just finished washing the feet of His disciples, and soon He would finish the Last Supper, go to the Garden of Gethsemane, be arrested, beaten and crucified. And this was to all take place through the betrayal of one of the Twelve. Yet rather than speak of these pending events in a fearful or anxious way, Jesus points to the glory He will receive through them.Everything in life has the potential to become an instrument of the glory of God. Even our sin can end in God's glory when we repent and receive God's forgiveness. It will not be our sin that glorifies God but His mercy poured forth from the Cross upon us that gives Him glory.The same is true with the events of Holy Week. When looked at from a purely human perspective, what Jesus endured was tragic and horrific. One of His closest companions betrayed Him. The religious leaders of the time betrayed Him. The civil authorities betrayed Him. And all of the disciples except John fled in fear as Jesus was betrayed. But Jesus did not look at any of this through human eyes alone. He saw it all from the eternal perspective and clearly taught that all of these seemingly tragic events would end in His glory.When we commit ourselves to the following of Christ, we can be assured that we will also share in His Cross. We will experience the sins of others, encounter mistreatment, and have to endure various sufferings. The question for us all as we have these encounters in life is whether we will endure them in anger and despair or with the hopeful confidence of our Lord. Again, everything in life has the potential to become an instrument of the glory of God. Nothing in life has the power to steal away that glory when we keep our eyes upon the will of God and His power to use all for His glory. Reflect, today, upon your call in life to see everything from the divine perspective. If you are upset, angry, despairing or confused at times, know that God wants to bring clarity and grace to every situation. He wants to show you how you can share in His divine mission of transforming every evil into God's glory. Seek out the ways that your life must give glory to God in everything, especially those things that seem incapable of being used for good. The more an experience in life seems incapable of being used for God's glory, the more that experience is capable of giving true glory to God. My glorious Lord, You brought forth good from all things. Even the grave evil of Your betrayal was transformed into a manifestation of Your glory. I offer to You, dear Lord, all that I endure in life and pray that You will be glorified in all things, and that my life will continually become a manifestation of the glory due Your holy name. For which of these are you going to stone me?” 33The Jews answered, “It is not for a good work that we are going to stone you, but for blasphemy, because you, though only a human being, are making yourself God.” 34Jesus answered, “Is it not written in your law, ‘I said, you are gods'? 35If those to whom the word of God came were called ‘gods' – and the scripture cannot be annulled – 36can you say that the one whom the Father has sanctified and sent into the world is blaspheming because I said, ‘I am God's Son'? 37If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me. 38But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.” 39Then they tried to arrest him again, but he escaped from their hands. 40He went away again across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing earlier, and he remained there. 41Many came to him, and they were saying, “John performed no sign, but everything that John said about this man was true.” 42And many believed in him there. Today's Gospel shows Jesus caught up in the tension of holding heaven and earth together, for he belongs to both spheres. He comes from above as God's ultimate revealer. But as a human being, he also reveals to us the truth about ourselves — our divine essence. As the only begotten Son, he opens the way for us to be God's children too, sharers of the divine life. In fulfilling this mission among his own people, Jesus finds stubborn resistance that leads to hostility and violence. We begin to see with greater clarity what the evangelist means in the prologue: “He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him.” Jesus leaves the dangerous zone of Judea temporarily because his hour has not yet come. The stage is now set for the unfolding of the events of Holy Week. Lord Jesus, out of the evil of violence, God's love will draw the ultimate good, which is our salvation. Transform us as we ponder this mystery. Amen

In this Gospel, Jesus tells the parable of two sons. One who disobeys his father, but then repents and one who says he will obey but doesn't. Fr. Jim teaches us that faith is an active verb. Jesus is essentially asking, “Do you mean what you say? If so, change your life. “And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.”Luke 22:31-32Jesus is doing that very thing right now in Heaven as I speak to you. That's right, His ministry is intercession - standing in the gap for you and me. There is nothing more powerful on earth than intercessory prayer. You see, I am not an intercessor, I am a prayer warrior but an intercessor is a specific ministry and I hold intercessors in the highest regard. My dear wife Jill is an intercessor and many a time she will bring me a word that is right on-line. I have a team of intercessors who are praying for Shalom Ministries, 24-7. A young man called Anton is heading them up. We have hundreds and hundreds of intercessors praying for this ministry right around the world. When people come to me and say, “What can we do to help?” I only have one answer - Please pray for us, because I know that "The effective fervent prayer of a righteous man or woman avails much." That is what it says in James 5:16So mom, don't worry about your children - Intercede for them. Young people, don't worry about your old folks at this time with this horrible, ugly COVID-19, pray for them. You see, Jesus prayed for Peter that the devil would not sift him but that he would not fail in his ministry, that his strength would be kept and that his faith would continue.If Christ Himself is interceding on our behalf today, surely that tells you and me just how vital prayer is in these troublesome times that we are living. You see, this Intercessor of ours, the Lord Jesus Christ - Hebrews 4:14 tells us that He understands what we are going through because He has walked this road before us. He knows them all, He knows every pitfall - He is not interceding blindly. He is praying that today you and I will not get sifted. Primeira Leitura: Atos 7,51-8,1 Leitura dos Atos dos Apóstolos – Naqueles dias, Estêvão disse ao povo, aos anciãos e aos doutores da Lei: 51“Homens de cabeça dura, insensíveis e incircuncisos de coração e ouvido! Vós sempre resististes ao Espírito Santo e, como vossos pais agiram, assim fazeis vós! 52A qual dos profetas vossos pais não perseguiram? “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him at once.”  John 13:31–32Jesus speaks this line about Himself being glorified immediately after Judas leaves the supper to go forth to betray Him. Jesus had just finished washing the feet of His disciples, and soon He would finish the Last Supper, go to the Garden of Gethsemane, be arrested, beaten and crucified. And this was to all take place through the betrayal of one of the Twelve. Yet rather than speak of these pending events in a fearful or anxious way, Jesus points to the glory He will receive through them.Everything in life has the potential to become an instrument of the glory of God. Even our sin can end in God’s glory when we repent and receive God’s forgiveness. It will not be our sin that glorifies God but His mercy poured forth from the Cross upon us that gives Him glory.The same is true with the events of Holy Week. When looked at from a purely human perspective, what Jesus endured was tragic and horrific. One of His closest companions betrayed Him. The religious leaders of the time betrayed Him. The civil authorities betrayed Him. And all of the disciples except John fled in fear as Jesus was betrayed. But Jesus did not look at any of this through human eyes alone. He saw it all from the eternal perspective and clearly taught that all of these seemingly tragic events would end in His glory.When we commit ourselves to the following of Christ, we can be assured that we will also share in His Cross. We will experience the sins of others, encounter mistreatment, and have to endure various sufferings. The question for us all as we have these encounters in life is whether we will endure them in anger and despair or with the hopeful confidence of our Lord. Again, everything in life has the potential to become an instrument of the glory of God. Nothing in life has the power to steal away that glory when we keep our eyes upon the will of God and His power to use all for His glory.Reflect, today, upon your call in life to see everything from the divine perspective. If you are upset, angry, despairing or confused at times, know that God wants to bring clarity and grace to every situation. He wants to show you how you can share in His divine mission of transforming every evil into God’s glory. Seek out the ways that your life must give glory to God in everything, especially those things that seem incapable of being used for good. The more an experience in life seems incapable of being used for God’s glory, the more that experience is capable of giving true glory to God.My glorious Lord, You brought forth good from all things. Even the grave evil of Your betrayal was transformed into a manifestation of Your glory. I offer to You, dear Lord, all that I endure in life and pray that You will be glorified in all things, and that my life will continually become a manifestation of the glory due Your holy name. Evangelho – João 4,5-42 Proclamação do evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo João – Naquele tempo, [5Jesus chegou a uma cidade da Samaria chamada Sicar, perto do terreno que Jacó tinha dado ao seu filho José. 6Era aí que ficava o poço de Jacó. Cansado da viagem, Jesus sentou-se junto ao poço. Era por volta do meio-dia. 7Chegou uma mulher da Samaria para tirar água. Jesus lhe disse: “Dá-me de beber”. 8Os discípulos tinham ido à cidade para comprar alimentos. 9A mulher samaritana disse então a Jesus: “Como é que tu, sendo judeu, pedes de beber a mim, que sou uma mulher samaritana?” De fato, os judeus não se dão com os samaritanos. 10Respondeu-lhe Jesus: “Se tu conhecesses o dom de Deus e quem é que te pede: ‘Dá-me de beber', tu mesma lhe pedirias a ele, e ele te daria água viva”. 11A mulher disse a Jesus: “Senhor, nem sequer tens balde e o poço é fundo. De onde vais tirar a água viva? 12Por acaso, és maior que nosso pai Jacó, que nos deu o poço e que dele bebeu, como também seus filhos e seus animais?” 13Respondeu Jesus: “Todo aquele que bebe desta água terá sede de novo. 14Mas quem beber da água que eu lhe darei, esse nunca mais terá sede. E a água que eu lhe der se tornará nele uma fonte de água que jorra para a vida eterna”. 15A mulher disse a Jesus: “Senhor, dá-me dessa água, para que eu não tenha mais sede nem tenha de vir aqui para tirá-la”. 16Disse-lhe Jesus: “Vai chamar teu marido e volta aqui”. 17A mulher respondeu: “Eu não tenho marido”. Jesus disse: “Disseste bem que não tens marido, 18pois tiveste cinco maridos e o que tens agora não é o teu marido. Nisso falaste a verdade”. 19A mulher disse a Jesus: “Senhor, vejo que és um profeta! 20Os nossos pais adoraram neste monte, mas vós dizeis que em Jerusalém é que se deve adorar”. 21Disse-lhe Jesus: “Acredita-me, mulher, está chegando a hora em que nem neste monte nem em Jerusalém adorareis o Pai. 22Vós adorais o que não conheceis. Nós adoramos o que conhecemos, pois a salvação vem dos judeus. 23Mas está chegando a hora, e é agora, em que os verdadeiros adoradores adorarão o Pai em espírito e verdade. De fato, esses são os adoradores que o Pai procura. 24Deus é espírito, e aqueles que o adoram devem adorá-lo em espírito e verdade”. 25A mulher disse a Jesus: “Sei que o Messias (que se chama Cristo) vai chegar. Quando ele vier, vai nos fazer conhecer todas as coisas”. 26Disse-lhe Jesus: “Sou eu, que estou falando contigo”. 27Nesse momento, chegaram os discípulos e ficaram admirados de ver Jesus falando com a mulher. Mas ninguém perguntou: “Que desejas?” ou “Por que falas com ela?” 28Então a mulher deixou o seu cântaro e foi à cidade, dizendo ao povo: 29“Vinde ver um homem que me disse tudo o que eu fiz. Será que ele não é o Cristo?” 30O povo saiu da cidade e foi ao encontro de Jesus. 31Enquanto isso, os discípulos insistiam com Jesus, dizendo: “Mestre, come”. 32Jesus, porém, disse-lhes: “Eu tenho um alimento para comer que vós não conheceis”. 33Os discípulos comentavam entre si: “Será que alguém trouxe alguma coisa para ele comer?” 34Disse-lhes Jesus: “O meu alimento é fazer a vontade daquele que me enviou e realizar a sua obra. 35Não dizeis vós: ‘Ainda quatro meses, e aí vem a colheita'? Pois eu vos digo, levantai os olhos e vede os campos: eles estão dourados para a colheita! 36O ceifeiro já está recebendo o salário e recolhe fruto para a vida eterna. Assim, o que semeia se alegra junto com o que colhe. 37Pois é verdade o provérbio que diz: ‘Um é o que semeia e outro o que colhe'. 38Eu vos enviei para colher aquilo que não trabalhastes. Outros trabalharam, e vós entrastes no trabalho deles”. [39Muitos samaritanos daquela cidade abraçaram a fé em Jesus, por causa da palavra da mulher que testemunhava: “Ele me disse tudo o que eu fiz”. [40Por isso, os samaritanos vieram ao encontro de Jesus e pediram que permanecesse com eles. Jesus permaneceu aí dois dias. 41E muitos outros creram por causa da sua palavra. 42E disseram à mulher: Já não cremos por causa das tuas palavras...

The Names and Titles of Jesus – Jesus the Good Shepherd Episode 98 This series of the names and titles of Jesus will give us a more in-depth understanding of Jesus Christ our Lord. This is the seventh in the series. The following is an outline. THE NAMES AND TITLES OF JESUS John 10 I Am the Good Shepherd I Am the True Shepherd I Am the Door Understanding the Shepherd His job was a dirty and dangerous one. Many times, all the shepherd had to fight off lions and other wild animals was a staff with a crook. He willingly put his life on the line for his flock. At night, he would put the flock in a makeshift pen that had only one way in and out. Day and night Communal pin in town He knew each one of his sheep—inspected them—he gave each one a name—He loved them like we love our pets—His sheep loved their shepherd They knew what he did for them and they knew his voice Abraham – Isaac – Jacob – Moses – David David the Shepherd Ps 78:70-72; He also chose David His servant And took him from the sheepfolds; 71From the care of the ewes with suckling lambs. He brought him To shepherd Jacob His people, And Israel His inheritance. 72So he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart And guided them with his skillful hands. The True Shepherd God was The Shepherd that all other shepherds of God’s people represented Ps 80: 1 Oh, give ear, Shepherd of Israel, You who lead Joseph like a flock; You who are enthroned above the cherubim, shine forth! The Messiah would be the True Shepherd Throughout the Old Testament, you have some promises of a shepherd yet to come Matthew 2:6, which is a quote from Micah 5 in the Old Testament:  And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you [Bethlehem] shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel (v. 2).  And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they shall dwell secure, [Who shall dwell secure? The sheep] for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth I AM THE GOOD SHEPHERD John 10:6 This figure of speech = not a Parable, a Parable is like something ie sower, hidden treasure etc.—Jesus is the door Jesus is The Good Shepherd. It is not just a figure of speech or a comparison, but a saying that is loaded with significance--the verbal equivalent of Jesus' signs. This picture is not so much an allusion of Ezekiel 34 as a development from it. Ezekiel 34:23-24 23“Then I will set over them one shepherd, My servant David, and he will feed them; he will feed them himself and be their shepherd. 24And I, the LORD, will be their God, and My servant David will be prince among them; I the LORD have spoken. Context of John 10: John chapters 9 and 10 belong  together The Pharisees self-appointed shepherds of God’s flock - were putting people out of the temple who believed in Jesus—plotted to kill Jesus – they tried to kill  him twice ‘Thus says the Lord GOD, “Woe, shepherds of Israel Ezk 34 Jer 32“Woe to the shepherds who are destroying and scattering the sheep of My pasture!” declares the LORD. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; All who came before Me are thieves and robbers a hired hand,…He flees because he is a hired hand and is not concerned about the sheep. John 10 10 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter by the door into the fold of the sheep, but climbs up some other way, he is a thief and a robber. 2But he who enters by the door is a shepherd of the sheep. 3To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4When he puts forth all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5A stranger they simply will not follow, but will flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers.” 6This figure of speech Jesus spoke to them, but they did not understand what those things were which He had been saying to them. • 7So Jesus said to them again, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8All who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. 9I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. 10The thief comes enters through Me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and [a]have it abundantly. 11“I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. 12He who is a hired hand, and not a shepherd, who is not the owner of the sheep, sees the wolf coming, and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13He flees because he is a hired hand and is not concerned about the sheep. 14I am the good shepherd, and I know My own and My own know Me, 15even as the Father knows Me and I know the Father, and I lay down My life for the sheep. 16I have other sheep, which are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will hear My voice, and they will become one flock with one shepherd. 17For this reason the Father loves Me because I lay down My life so that I may take it again. 18No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father.” I lay down My life for the sheep But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our [i]well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging, we are healed. 6All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way, But the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him. Isaiah 53 1 Peter 2:24-25 24and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed. 25For you were continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls. John 10 9A division occurred again among the Jews because of these words.20Many of them were saying, “He has a demon and is insane. Why do you listen to Him?” 21Others were saying, “These are not the sayings of one demon-possessed. A demon cannot open the eyes of the blind, can he?” 22At that time the Feast of the Dedication took place at Jerusalem; 23it was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple in the portico of Solomon. 24The Jews then gathered around Him, and were saying to Him, “How long will You keep us in suspense? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.” 25Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe; the works that I do in My Father’s name, these testify of Me.26But you do not believe because you are not of My sheep. 27My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; 28and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. 29My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30I and the Father are one.” 31The Jews picked up stones again to stone Him. 32Jesus answered them, “I showed you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you stoning Me?” 33The Jews answered Him, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy; and because You, being a man, make Yourself out to be God.” 34Jesus answered them, “Has it not been written in your Law, ‘I SAID, YOU ARE GODS’? 35If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), 36do you say of Him, whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? 37If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; 38but if I do them, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, so that you may [f]know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I in the Father.” 39Therefore they were seeking again to seize Him, and He eluded their grasp. How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”43“Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. 44“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day. 45It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God. ‘Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. 46No one has seen the Father except for the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. 47Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life. 48I am the bread of life. He gave His life so we can have eternal life 49Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. 50But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. 51I am the living bread that came down from heaven. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” 52Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” 53Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. 55For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.56Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. 57Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58This is the bread that came down from heaven.
