Janet tells her story about growing up in the church and doing "all the things" that were expected of her, only to have her world crash down all around her. She had family members suddenly pass away, she got divorced, left church, and had to start her life over at 55 years old. She had so many questions and so little answers. She had to take a time out and seek God on her own terms, and what she found was truth about who God is and who she is.

"[A] rare treat… an astute meditation on art, bravery, friendship, love, how to live, and on dying." - Sydney Morning Herald novel review Following a successful series of development readings staged as part of Sydney Festival 2021, Seymour Centre is proud to present the world premiere production of The Museum of Modern Love at Sydney Festival 2022. Adapted from the Stella Prize-winning novel by Heather Rose, The Museum of Modern Love follows New York-based film composer, Arky Levin, a man struggling to live and work in the face of incredible loss. By chance, Arky finds his way to MoMA and sees Marina Abramović in The Artist is Present—a marathon and now-legendary feat of performance art that saw Abramović sitting silent and completely still opposite thousands of museum visitors in the spring of 2010. Arky returns to MoMA again and again, and encounters other viewers also drawn to the exhibit, each with their own reasons for spending hours in the presence of Abramović. As the performance unfolds, so does Arky, and with his life coming back into focus, he finally understands what he must do to move forward. Set against the backdrop of one of the greatest art events in modern history, and blurring the lines between spectator and artist, this transfixing new work explores dying and living, courage and commitment—and meditates on the power of art to unite and connect us, even in an increasingly disconnected world. As part of The Museum of Modern Love, 10 people per performance will have the opportunity to sit on stage and be part of the action. All on-stage ticket holders will need to meet backstage before the show for a briefing and ticket holders will need to stay on stage for the duration of the performance. In this episode of the ARP, we’ll be hearing stories from Trevor Landsdown, who fought in the Ash Wednesday bushfires in Australia, in 1983. It’s a bit longer of an episode than usual and we spoke about many different topics, of fire, rescue, PTSD, local folklore and a general catch up with a guy who has been in the emergency services for a very long time. Trevor shares about that fateful day, of what it was like fighting the fires as a young firefighter and his role and actions on that day. Some memorable moments in the podcast, are of hearing his account of the fire passing over them, and waiting to hear how his dad survived, who was only just a short distance away. We also touched on the progression of technology and methods of how things are now, compared to those earlier days, and mentioned the introduction of AIIMS in to Australia. There were so many different topics, and this post won’t do them justice, so I have linked items to events, locations and the mentions of people in the podcast. It’s a big list, but is not comprehensive. Some of the fires we spoke of: January 1939 – Black Friday fires January 1944 – Fires with ran up Main Street of Pakenham where 4 houses lost. January 1983 – Ash Wednesday Bushfires February 2009 – Black Saturday Bushfires This image depicts the fires of Ash Wednesday, in 1983. The area that was destroyed by the fire in Upper Beaconsfield. While doing that, was fighting fires outside the building they were in at the Upper Beaconsfield HQ – to stop it from burning down. During the 2009 Black Saturday fires, we was also an Incident Controller of the Bunyip State Park fire, which was at the Pakenham ICC. During the 1983 Fires, the ICC was moved to Pakenham. AIIMS In Australia, the Australasian Inter-Service Incident Management System (AIIMS) is the nationally recognised [1] system of incident management for the nation’s fire and emergency service agencies.[2] Organisational principles and structure are used to manage bushfires and other large emergencies (e.g. floods, storms, cyclones etc.) utilising the all agencies approach. AIIMS was first developed in the 1980s as a derivative of the United States’ NIIMS, and is based on the principles of management by objectives, functional management and span of control. Greg Waters has been an executive producer, writer and show-runner on a number of great Australian drama series. His credits include: Rake, Anzac Girls, Janet King, Paper Giants, Devil’s Dust, An Accidental Soldier, The Straights, Crownies and Dance Academy. Yet up until his early thirties he was working in politics - until he decided to defect to study at AFTRS, the Australian Film Television and Radio School. His most recent achievements are the second series of the tripped-out sketch comedy series ‘Soulmates’ starring Christiaan Van Vuuren and Nick Boshier (aka The Bondi Hipsters) as well as what is sure to be one of the countries biggest TV events of the year, the political drama Secret City which premier’s on Foxtel’s Showcase this Sunday, June 5. Though he is incredibly modest, I did get him to open up about his process - some of which I witnessed first-hand as Greg and I have been housemates over the past few years. An absolute culture vulture, Greg is constantly absorbing information and inspiration around what he is interested in – or about the world that is relevant to what he is creating. He sees every play, every major TV drama, and every time I asked him if he’d heard of a podcast, he was all over it. He is also an indie music boffin and a regular attendee of alt music festival ‘Splendour in the Grass’. Talk about ‘filling your well’! I was very happy to sit down with my friend and reluctant mentor, Greg Waters.
