Sherwin Banda, president of African Travel, Inc., was born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa, during apartheid, a tumultuous time when the country was governed under the principles of segregation and discrimination based on race. He describes what it meant to be classified as “colored” while growing up, and how his family dealt with the various challenges that came with that designation.   In this episode of Humans of Travel, Banda explains how he transitioned into a decades-long career in hospitality, beginning with the night shift at a Cape Town hotel, until he became the first Black General Manager of a five-star hotel in South Africa. He also explains what it was like for South Africa to transition to a democratic country, and more presently, the parallels between that time and the conversations we are currently having in the U.S. about race. He also explains the ways that African Travel's parent company, The Travel Corporation, have handled the challenges of diversity and representation in the travel industry.   Finally, he gives tips for travelers heading to Africa for the first time, along with suggested itineraries through African Travel Inc., the longest established luxury safari operator that's focused exclusively on the African continent.   RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE Africantravelinc.com  Instagram: @AfricanTravelInc, @SherwinBanda   Email: Sherwin.banda@africantravelinc.com   ABOUT YOUR HOST  Emma Weissmann is Senior Editor of TravelAge West, a print and online magazine for travel advisors based in the Western U.S. She is also the co-host of Trade Secrets, a podcast created with sister publication Travel Weekly. TravelAge West also produces national trade publications Explorer and Family Getaways, as well as events including the Future Leaders in Travel Retreat, Global Travel Marketplace West, the WAVE Awards gala and the Napa Valley Leadership Forum.  ABOUT THE SHOW  TravelAge West's podcast, “Humans of Travel,” features conversations with exceptional people who have compelling stories to tell. Africa is one of the world's largest continents. It's also considered one of the poorest. But that's not exactly true. Many well-developed nations exploit Africa and ravage its abundant natural resources.Among the ample resources found on this continent are minerals that are vital to our current technology-driven society. If Africa were to ever cut off the rest of the world and revoke access to these minerals, modern society would fall.In this video, you'll discover how powerful Africa really is in the 21st century and how many of its countries have the potential to shape continents at will.Discover Why Africa is a Sleeping Superpower________________________________________If you liked the video, subscribe to my channel!https://www.youtube.com/c/DerrickKirk?sub_confirmation=1 You can also follow me on:FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/WHEREISDKIRK/ INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/dkirkforus/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mythoughts_with_derrickSNAPCHAT: https://bit.ly/3LvANda Visit my website: http://derrickkirk.com/ Show Your Support: https://bit.ly/3S2mr6m Support the show

Our cover story this week on the appeal of Africa’s wide-open spaces, written by our South Africa-based contributor Dorine Reinstein, seemed like the perfect time to sit down with Sherwin Banda, the president of African Travel, and his colleague Lucille Sive, the CEO of the Travel Corp.'s Africa division, and talk about traveler patterns, new safari products, conservation efforts and more. This episode was recorded Friday, Nov. 19 was edited for length and clarity. However, just after the editing was completed, the newest variant of the coronavirus was identified, and within a day, countries, including the U.S., rushed to close their borders. It shows, again and again, how quickly things can change in the travel landscape and how travelers, advisors and podcast hosts have to reassess and pivot. When listening to this episode it’s important to keep in mind that the conversation took place before omicron came to light. But there’s still value in talking about Africa’s travel options, because even if clients can’t or don't wish to travel, there’s planning and dreaming to be done. He also explains what it was like for South Africa to transition to a democratic country, and more presently, the parallels between that time and the conversations we are currently having in the U.S. about race. He also explains the ways that African Travel’s parent company, The Travel Corporation, have handled the challenges of diversity and representation in the travel industry.   Finally, he gives tips for travelers heading to Africa for the first time, along with suggested itineraries through African Travel Inc., the longest established luxury safari operator that’s focused exclusively on the African continent. ABOUT THE SHOW  TravelAge West’s podcast, “Humans of Travel,” features conversations with exceptional people who have compelling stories to tell. An alarming article from the Business Insider sparked the question, are South African's amongst the most restricted travellers in the world? With little happening in terms of a vaccination rollout and without a credible national carrier where does this leave the South African tourism market? There is still much to be proud of in the aviation sector, Airlink continue to set the standard in the regional market, FlySafair, Comair and Mango show slight number improvements and Cemair start making all the right moves. The era of the narrow-body jet is among us, the A321LR stretches its legs to Heathrow and Jet Blue unveil a radical new design for both economy and business class travellers. Is this the beginning of the end for hub and spoke travel? Ethiopian land at the wrong airport, I loose my cool with a snotty remark from a ex-colleague wearing orange blinkers and the SA Express saga is about to end. Africa is becoming an increasingly popular holiday destination among adventure-seeking Chinese tourists. The numbers of visitors who went to Africa in 2016 was up sharply due to looser visa restrictions and new direct flights between China and Ethiopia, Kenya and South Africa among other popular destinations. Chinese arrivals in South Africa alone were up 93% last year. You'd think this would be great news for Africa's embattled travel operators, right? After all, Westerners turned away from the continent in large numbers after the Ebola outbreak, terrorism incidents in Kenya, Nigeria and Tunisia as well as the ongoing economic uncertainties at home. So a new market of wealthy travelers, this time from China, should be warmly welcomed by all those hotels, safari parks, bus operators and other travel suppliers whose livelihoods depend on satisfying overseas visitors. Wrong. Kampala-based travel industry consultant Sandra Rwese joins Eric & Cobus to explain why she thinks African travel companies are so reluctant to embrace the new Chinese tourist and how it may already be too late for African companies to effectively compete.  Join the discussion. What do you think of the surging number of Chinese tourists in Africa and around the world? World Footprints will introduce the African country of Kenya--considered to be the Cradle of Civilization because its history can be traced back six million years ago.  Kenya is also considered the heart of Africa and the safari epicenter of the world.  We'll learn more about this ancient country from Jacinta Nzioka with the Kenyan Tourism Board. During the latest Caribbean Tourism Organization conference we met over a dozen of country representatives to learn what distinguishes their country from another Caribbean nation.  We also discovered some interesting history and traveled deeper through our conversations.   Listen.
