➡️JOIN THE STRUGGLE + BECOME A MEMBER OF THE HARAMBEE ORGANISATION OF BLACK UNITY (HOBU): https://www.blackunity.org.uk/membership In this week's Black Political Rant, Kehinde (@Kehinde_Andrews) discusses how we understand Monday's not-guilty verdict of Sgt. Martyn Blake's trial, a White MET police marksman who killed an unarmed Black man, Chris Kaba in 2022. Kehinde links this to other cases of Black men killed by the police, to-date UK stats on police killings of Black people; and the relevance of Malcolm's concept of "The Negro" that's still with us today. He makes plain that the racism of the police is the racism of the society. The police are as racist as the society allows them to be. We have the police force that society wants. The police, police with the consent of the racist society. The fears, prejudices, negative criminal stereotypical assessments, hallucinations, and "perceptual distortions" of the police are all features of the psychosis of Whiteness, a global phenomenon, that leads to our deaths.  In this week's Interview Kehinde talks with award-winning Sylvia Arthur (LOATAD founder) and Seth Avusuglo (LOATAD manager) from the Library Of Africa and The African Diaspora Archive. They discuss the origin, mission, and development of LOATAD, the difficulty of getting Black books on the continent, the writing residencies + more.  The Library Of Africa and The African Diaspora (LOATAD) is a decolonizing private library, archive, writing residency, research institute, and museum dedicated to the work of Afrikan and Diaspora writers from the late 19th century to the present day. Based in Accra, Ghana, it was founded by Sylvia Arthur in 2017 using 1300 of her own books. LOATAD's current collection contains around 4000 books by writers from 41 of Africa's 54 countries and Black authors from the Americas, the Caribbean, Europe, and around the world. Her work acknowledges the influences of her Haitian culture and interest in portraiture, food, farming and the physical labor that goes into traditional artistic practices of the Afrikan diaspora. She honors her ancestors always and is currently growing food in several community gardens on the West side of Chicago! She received an undergraduate degree from a fancy art school and exhibited her work in many places but collaborating with folks throughout the Afrikan diaspora is her life's work. Artist Statement -- Alexandra Antoine My works are pathways for the stories, memories and traditional practices of my ancestors and elders. I sow and harvest the knowledge that was passed down to me within the works I create that honor the use of my hands, the flow of repetitive actions, and the embodiment of joy within the preparation, care and intentionality of the images and subjects I utilize. I reflect on memories of communal experiences with my loved ones, the oral histories shared within these spaces, the native language of my people and its use in sustaining my connection to land and spirit. My work utilizes whatever material is necessary to depict my intended vision and is therefore interdisciplinary in practice. My paintings express the linear, topographical layers of beauty I see within my people. My food collages pay homage to the abundance of culinary knowledge within the kitchen spaces of black folks throughout the world and the alchemy we create in our kitchens. My printmaking work showcases the ways in which my ideas can exist in functional forms as well as standard ways of viewing art. I honor the people and land of Léogâne, Haiti.

CONTENT WARNING: Racialised Trauma - In this week's Black World News, Kehinde Andrews makes plain Trump's so-called assassination attempt (leaving one person dead and two wounded) and as Malcolm said of Kennedy's assassination, "it's chickens coming home to roost." However, it's not surprising as America is founded and sustained on political violence: the first violence of the genocide of native people, the second violence of enslaving us, and the third violence of kicking the British out with the American Revolutionary War. Much of the violence of the world today can be traced back to the US and Western imperialism. This is America, this is the West. This. Is. What. The System. Is.    - In this week's official guest interview, Kehinde Andrews talks with Guilaine Kinouani a leading voice in Black psychiatry, psychology, and psychosocial studies in the UK. They talk about her work as a clinician, re-traumatizing mental health systems, being dissuaded from working as a clinician as well as dealing with her own trauma as a clinician with over 15 years of research and study including her books Living While Black and White Minds. They talk about the origin story of Race Reflections which started as a blog (now a social enterprise) about not being silenced, and how it developed. They highlight the Certificate in Working with Racial Trauma training.  - Guilaine Kinouani is a UK-based Paris-born woman of Afrikan (Congolese) descent; an award-winning critical and radical psychologist and group analyst, scholar, activist, and "[she] likes to think…a bit of a fashion connoisseur." Guilaine is also a current PhD (her second doctorate!) researcher, in psychosocial studies, and founder of the social enterprise, Race Reflections.  She's written three books: Living While Black: The Essential Guide to Overcoming Racial Trauma (2021 + Guardian Book of the Year), White Minds Everyday Performance, Violence and Resistance (2023), and a third book Creative Disruption: Psychosocial Scholarship as Praxis is expected in November 2024. - BLACK WORLD NEWS LINKS The Assassination Attempt on Donald Trump and Political Violence Waged by the U.S.https://blackagendareport.com/index.php/assassination-attempt-donald-trump-and-political-violence-waged-us The Jakarta Method https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Jakarta_Method Book Review: The Jakarta Method: Washington's Anticommunist Crusade and the Mass Murder Program That Shaped Our World by Vincent Bevins https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/lsereviewofbooks/2020/07/29/book-review-the-jakarta-method-washingtons-anticommunist-crusade-and-the-mass-murder-program-that-shaped-our-world-by-vincent-bevins/ Indonesian mass killings of 1965–66 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indonesian_mass_killings_of_1965%E2%80%9366 - GUEST LINKS Certificate in Working With Racial Trauma: A Conversation With Helping Professionals (Sign Up)https://racereflections.co.uk/events/open-day-certificate-in-working-with-racial-trauma-and-race-based-injuries-using-the-foundation-of-group-analysis/ Certificate in Working With Racial Trauma: A Conversation With Helping Professionals - Prospectus https://racereflections.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/CWRT-JUNE-2024-w-dates.pdf Certificate in Working With Racial Trauma & Race Based Wounds Using the Foundation of Group Analysis – Curriculum  https://racereflections.co.uk/certificate-in-working-with-racial-trauma-race-based-wounds-using-the-foundation-of-group-analysis/ Guilaine Biographyhttps://racereflections.co.uk/about-the-author/ Living While Black The Essential Guide to Overcoming Racial Trauma https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/442992/living-while-black-by-kinouani-guilaine/9781529109436 White Minds Everyday Performance, Violence and Resistance By Guilaine Kinouanihttps://policy.bristoluniversitypress.co.uk/white-minds Epistemic homelessness | Guilaine Kinouani | TEDxUCLWomen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MoKBLPbkB5I&embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fracereflections.co.uk%2F - THE HARAMBEE ORGANISATION OF BLACK UNITY NEEDS YOU Harambee Organisation of Black Unity (Marcus Garvey Centre + Nicole Andrews Community Library, Birmingham, UK)https://www.blackunity.org.uk/ CAP25 - Convention of Afrikan People - Gambia - May 17-19, 2025 (Everyone's Welcome) On Malcolm X's 100th birthday, the Harambee Organisation of Black Unity is bringing together those in Afrika and the Diaspora who want to fulfill Malcolm's legacy and build a global organization for Black people. Shabaka Hutchings, now Shabaka, has been a crucial and connected London-based musician for years, leading arena dance-jazz band Sons of Kemet, cosmic psych-dub-funk trio The Comet Is Coming, and the collaborative band Shabaka & the Ancestors. He began incorporating layered flutes on the last Sons of Kemet record Black to the Future, and kept on picking up more and other woodwinds, first on his 2022 ambient meditation, Afrikan Culture, and now on his new full-length, Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace. On it, Shabaka plays flutes: the Slavic woodwind called svirel, Japanese shakuhachi, Andean quena, and even clarinet. Plus, rapper and flutist André 3000 contributes flute to “I'll Do Whatever You Want”. This time, in his visit to our studio, Shabaka, together with Charles Overton on harp and Austin Williamson on drums, play some of the songs from Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace. Plus, Shabaka talks us through the different flutes in his bow case, including a clay turtle ocarina and a non-student shakuhachi. Yli 62 miljoonan asukkaan Etelä-Afrikka on Afrikan mantereen teollisuusmahti ja ääni. Millaista tulosta maassa odotetaan toukokuussa järjestettävissä vaaleissa? Miten tulokset näkyvät ympäri maailman? Etelä-Afrikka on globaalin etelän eturiviä, BRICS-maa ja maailman johtavien talouksien G20-ryhmän ainoa afrikkalainen jäsenvaltio. Pinta-alaa maalla on yli kolmen ja puolen Suomen verran, ja luonto on pökerryttävän rikasta Afrikan ikonisine eläimineen. Kallioperässä kimaltaa kultaa ja timantteja. Samalla energiakriisi pimentää koteja ja rikollisuus ja korruptio rehottavat. Eriarvoisuus on maailman rajuimpia. 27 vuotta vankilassa istunut Nelson Mandela ANC-puolueineen voitti Etelä-Afrikan ensimmäiset vapaat vaalit vuonna 1994. Miten vaalien tulokset heijastuvat kansainväliseen politiikkaan kaikkialla maailmassa? Asiantuntijavieraat jaksossa: Sami Sillanpää on Helsingin Sanomien ulkomaantoimittaja. We recorded this conversation just before the world shifted on October 7th. We actually have several conversations that we still need to release that we recorded in August and September, but I wanted to get to this one first due to the urgency of Shaka Shakur's situation. Shaka Shakur is a New Afrikan Political Prisoner who has been behind the walls for the majority of his life since he was 16 years old. He's currently held captive at Beaumont Correctional Center in Virginia. He was mentored by figures such as Zolo Azania and James “Yaki” Sayles. Shaka has an extensive track record of prisoner organizing and exposing injustices and human rights violations behind the walls. I'll include a more extensive bio from his Jericho Movement page in the show notes. Shaka had reached out to me after the publication of our discussion with Thandisizwe Chimurenga and Yusef “Bunchy” Shakur on Sanyika Shakur's political writings. He wanted to share some things and also offer the perspective of someone from Sanyika's generation who spent many years studying and struggling in the same circles, and communicating with Sanyika through the Prison News Service and other publications that circulated behind the walls connecting New Afrikan prisoners and other political and politicized prisoners. Shaka also describes similar experiences of becoming politicized during their first period of incarceration at a young age, struggling upon his return to the outside & ultimately ending up back behind the walls. Shakur shares his reflections on that era, on changes in the prison movement and outside support movements over time and on the disconnect that often exists between revolutionary rhetoric and revolutionary action in the US left in recent years.  Importantly, Shaka Shakur is currently dealing with multiple urgent health issues, including his battle with cancer and we have multiple links and ways people can support his legal campaign and his request for clemency. We will have links to all of this in the show notes, but just to say that he is still asking people to call in and put pressure the Department of Correction for further medical testing. That call is in the show notes as well.  This episode was also recorded before the passing of Ed Mead who we mention in this discussion. Rest well Ed, you've earned it.  The last thing I will say is that although this was recorded before the Palestinian struggle took center stage, I think many of Shaka's reflections are relevant to that movement as well as the US based solidarity efforts that are currently underway so keep that in mind as you listen. Welcome to Episode #78 of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast! My conversation with Heran Tadesse, a yoga teacher from Ethiopia, was so fascinating as we took a deep dive into African yoga and Kemetic yoga. I hope that this conversation made you curious about how yoga can help transform you into a vessel for peace, acceptance, and love. If you're looking to tune into a podcast episode that is all about yoga in Ethiopia, then this is the conversation for you. Support the podcast: https://www.patreon.com/wildyogatribe Tell me more about Heran Tadesse Heran Tadesse is a yoga teacher from Ethiopia who has been teaching yoga for 9 years in several studios in the capital city of Addis Ababa. She teaches prenatal/postnatal yoga, and is a mother herself. As a student, she started off with Hatha Yoga. She was trained in Kemetic Yoga in Egypt and Afrikan Yoga in Kenya.  What to expect in the Yoga In Ethiopia episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast Heran was adopted from Ethiopia as a baby, and was raised in the Netherlands. She studied tropical forestry in University, and first came to yoga at that time in her life. She practiced and attended classes for 10 years before attending a yoga teacher training in Belgium. After receiving a job offer in Addis Ababa, she returned to Ethiopia. She works in the educational sector and teaches yoga in multiple studios.  Heran then took us on a deep dive of what Kemetic Yoga, which has it's roots in ancient Egypt which pre-dates yoga in India, though it is no longer a living part of Egyptian culture. It's about reconnecting with the ancestors, and is modeled after the hieroglyphics. It's akin to Iyengar yoga, with strict, static poses. Afrikan yoga was founded by a man from Jamaica who is based out of Kenya. This style draws upon movements that people make, in the whole Nile Valley. This could be movements that fishermen make, or women who are grinding wheat. There are series of movements, with a lot more flow and, in fact, dance. There is a huge focus on relating to the elements. Heran also walked us through all the diversity and beauty of her country, and about the history of yoga in Ethiopia and where she sees yoga going into the future. As there are only 20 yoga teachers, approximately, in her country— and as she is the most experienced practitioner in her country, she is often stopped on the street and people shout “yoga!” At her. The whole city knows her as the yoga teacher. For the skimmers - What's in the yoga in Ethiopia episode? The institutions of Afrikan yoga and Kemetic yoga Kemetic yoga is based on hieroglyphics  Afrikan yoga is based on the natural movements of people in the Nile Valley and the elements Gatekeeping and the inaccessibility of yoga Being a vessel for more peace, acceptance, and love The growing scene of yoga in Ethiopia Connect with Heran Tadesse https://www.facebook.com/heran.tadesse https://ethioyogaqueen.wordpress.com https://www.facebook.com/EthiopianYogaQueen https://www.instagram.com/HeransYoga Want more?
