En Shpadoinkle day helt enkelt! Mycket nöje! The Musical (originally known as Alferd Packer: The Musical) is a 1993 American black comedy Western musical film directed, written, produced, co-scored by and starring Trey Parker in his directorial debut while studying at the University of Colorado at Boulder, before reaching fame with South Park alongside his friend Matt Stone who also stars in and produced the film. It is loosely based on the true story of Alfred Packer and the sordid details of the trip from Utah to Colorado that left his five fellow travelers dead and partially eaten. Trey Parker (credited as Juan Schwartz) stars as Alferd Packer, with frequent collaborators Stone, Dian Bachar, and others playing the supporting roles.
(Host: Josh) Alfred, or sometimes Alferd Packer, is one of the most infamous villains in Colorado history. As the story goes, Packer, a trail guide, led his party into disaster and then killed them one by one before consuming their bodies in order to survive. He was arrested, tried, convicted, and then escaped. Once reprehended Packer changed his story once again. And now more recent evidence has emerged that seems to have exonerated him. We'll try to sort of this out on this week's episode of Footnoting History.

What would you do when faced with a life-or-death situation? Alferd Packer had to answer this question for himself, and do something that is -- for many -- unthinkable. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Who was Alfred Packer? Was he America's first Hannibal the Cannibal? On February 9, 1874, Alferd Packer and five other men departed from the camp of Ute Chief Ouray, near what is now Montrose, Colorado. They were resuming a trek that had begun several months earlier in Provo, Utah, hoping to reach newly discovered gold prospects in Breckenridge, Colorado. While the original party was considerably larger, only Packer (as guide) and Israel Swan, Shannon Wilson Bell, George Noon, James Humphrey, and Frank Miller dared risk the sometimes brutal Colorado winter in search of riches. And brutal it was, as not long after leaving the safety of Chief Ouray's camp, the group was engulfed in a furious blizzard near the present site of Lake City, Colorado. Packer was next seen on April 16, 1874, straggling into the Los Pinos Indian Agency with little more than a rifle and a skinning knife belonging to members of his party. The story Packer told at that time was that, once the storm hit, he had set up camp while the others went forward in search of food. They never returned, and Packer subsequently headed out for Los Pinos. - https://www.museumtrail.org/alferd-packer SOURCES: https://www.museumtrail.org/alferd-packer https://www.newspapers.com/clip/120993735/the-oskaloosa-independent/ https://www.newspapers.com/image/535743336/?terms=Alfred%20Packer%20dead&match=1&clipping_id=120991548 https://www.newspapers.com/image/226969329/?terms=Alfred%20Packer%20&match=1 https://www.newspapers.com/image/728654362/?clipping_id=120990249&terms=Alfred%20Packer%20dea&match=1 Learn more about your ad choices. Trust is not something that should just be given freely. You learn to trust someone by them proving themselves overtime until you can know that they can be relied upon by you, and then subsequently others can rely on them by your word. That said, meeting someone out on the trail, and just assuming they know where they are going, and what they are doing, can get you into trouble. In this well known case, Alferd packer had lied his way into a group of pioneers saying he was a guide, but in reality, he knew the area no more than any of them. This lead to a situation where four men would go missing, and somehow, Alferd survived the harsh conditions. But considering his story was full of holes, he would be questioned but even to this day, nobody truly knows what happened. Human desperation is something that many of us never experience in its truest form, which we should be thankful for. However, in life, not everything is always such a cake walk for everyone. As a group of people were headed to California in the 1800s, they would be besieged by storm after storm, requiring them to halt their progress and dig in. Unfortunately, as their food supplies ran low, this lead to some tough decisions being made. Thank you for watching Roanoke Tales and I hope you enjoy Real Horror: The Cannibalistic Tragedy of The Donner Party

Loveland is still on top of the recycling game in Colorado. The state is causing controversy with their new bill that was introduced to ban additional fees for having a pet in rentals. How is this going to effect the housing market if it were to pass? On April 16, 1874, a desperate and frostbitten man wrapped in rags wandered into a basecamp in the frosty Colorado San Juan Mountains. Famished and half-dead, soldiers gathered around to quickly feed the poor guy. As he regained strength, Alferd Packer quickly threaded together a story about how he impossibly survived the winter stranded deep in the unforgiving mountains. His story... would be one giant lie. The truth, as it slowly revealed itself, involved unspeakable acts of violence, murder and perhaps most harrowing, cannibalism. History may have overlooked the disturbing true tales of Alferd Packer, but we sure haven't! In the winter of 1873-1874, six miners seeking fortune and gold in the San Juan mountains of western Colorado disappear in to a winter storm. Only one survives- Alferd Packer. Packer tells several stories of how he came to be the sole survivor before ultimately confessing to succumbing to cannibalism to survive. But did he merely feast on the bodies of those who died of exposure, accidents, or malicious intent from the other miners? Or was Packer himself a crazed murderer? The legend of the Colorado Cannibal may be one of the darkest mysteries in western American history, and we will explore it today.

In November, 1873, 21 men headed for the gold field in Breckenridge, Colorado. Their guide, Alferd Packer, ended up being terrible with directions. The weather was awful and the men ran out of provisions pretty fast. They began splitting the group up and Alferd was in charge of guiding 5 men through the mountains. Unfortunately, Alferd was the only one of his group to make it out alive. He told many stories about his journey and people began noticing the inconsistencies. Alferd finally admitted that the other men had been killed and even though his story kept changing, there was cannibalism involved.https://www.drinkingthecoolaid.com/https://ratethispodcast.com/coolaid
Alfred Packer was headed to Breckenridge, Colorado in the late 1800s. He was guiding a group of men there to search for gold. Something happened during their journey that led to a bizarre turn of events. Was this a case of murder and cannibalism because it was premeditated OR self-defense and survivalism?• Merch: https://www.teepublic.com/stores/reverie-true-crime-store?ref_id=17247• Patreon: https://www.Patreon.com/ReverieTrueCrime• Facebook: https://www.Facebook.com/ReverieTrueCrime• Instagram: https://www.Instagram.com/ReverieTrueCrime• Twitter: https://www.Twitter.com/ReverieCrimePod• Contact: ReverieTrueCrime@gmail.comProud to be apart of the Slash ‘N Cast Network! https://www.slashncast.net Sponsor: KIND BAR! Join us as we discuss the Colorado Cannibal: Mr. Alferd Packer! Part down on his luck prospector during the gold rush, part epileptic with the tendency to boast about his nonexistent wilderness guide skills, Al had quite the appetite during the harsh winter months of 1873-1874. Learn about how Al made it back rather safe and round (and yes- I do mean ROUND) after supposedly being abandoned by his five ill fated companions. Did I mention the multiple warnings and free food and lodging these men were offered by a local tribe yet? I didn't. Well, you'll just have to listen to the episode to find out how easily this tragedy could have been avoided. Sometimes life imitates art and the stories we have for you this week definitely represent that notion. This week our podcast stories are about events so gruesome, so chilling, they inspired horror movies. Nydia tells us all about the inspiration behind one of her favorite movies, The Silence of the Lambs, serial killer and kidnapper, Gary Heidnik. Dana brings us the meaty story of cannibal Alferd Packer. Cindy shares the creepy New Jersey story of The Watcher house. Will Netflix pick up this story or is it just a rumor? For dinner, Cindy cooked up a homemade Margherita pizza that was to die for. For dessert, she created a delicious chocolate popcorn mix with Reeses Pieces in it . Our wine this week was scary delicious. It was a Podere La Berta Sangiovese that paired amazingly well with our pizzas. You can find the links to the stories and food photos on: www.winedineandstorytime.com Check us out on Social too!! https://www.facebook.com/winedineandstorytime https://www.instagram.com/winedinestorytime/ https://twitter.com/WDStoryTime or call us some time 6093003094

In this episode, we discuss one of America's oldest pastimes: cannibalism. Alfred (or Alferd if you ask him) Packer was an early settler in the Western Frontier which was essentially one hard time after another, and that wasn't helped by his general unlikeableness and all-around shady behavior. In 1874, when he led a group of men through the harsh Colorado winter wilderness against the warnings of the Indigenous tribe who had welcomed them in, all the men ended up dead, except for ol' Packer. In fact, he claimed to have survived off something all together unsettling: the men's meaty thighs. The story was an uproar for the newly settled area, and it was a venerable shitshow as they attempted to seek justice for the dead men. Join us for a very special collaboration with our girls over at Kim and Ket Stay Alive...Maybe who covered the amazingly bizarre movie "Ravenous" which was very loosely based off the story of Alfred Packer and is MUCH sexier. At the end of the episode, we all sit together to discuss our feelings on cannibalism, Ravenous, Packer, and which of us would be cool with chomping on some meaty thighs...outside of the bedroom. After the heaviness that was Cannibal Holocaust I thought it might be nice to have a more lighthearted story about people consuming human flesh. Enter Cannibal! The Musical, arguably not ultra violent and definitely more of a comedy than a horror movie, but it's our podcast and we'll do what we want, rules be damned.
In 1874, six men attempted to travel through the San Juan Mountains of Colorado during the "dead" of winter with the ultimate goal of finding GOLD. But only one would survive... So when this man finally arrived to town over 2 months later looking fat and happy, you could say the locals raised a few eyebrows. Eventually he confessed that he had to resort to cannibalism of the other members to stay alive. If that wasn't bad enough, he then bragged about how certain body parts were tastier than others. So what was his true motive? Well you’re in luck, because today we get an actual professional opinion by our special guest host, Allyson! This is the story of Alferd Packer, aka "The Colorado Cannibal".
This week we're taking about the insane life of Alferd Packer, an inexperienced guide who led his party into the Colorado Mountains.
