In the spring of 2008, Amanda Merrow and Katie Baldwin met for the first time as apprentices at the Peconic Land Trust's Quail Hill Farm in Amagansett. Under the guidance of mentor Scott Chaskey, during their yearlong apprenticeship, they learned all the ins and outs of farming. A year later, Merrow and Baldwin leased a nearby plot of land from East Hampton Town and created their own farm — Amber Waves. Today, Amber Waves has a total of 35 tillable acres and in addition to growing crops, offers CSA membership and educational programming and operates a brick-and-mortar market. Amber Waves also employs 30 people on a year-round basis, and many more as seasonal help. This week, Amanda Merrow joins the editors to talk about the creation of Amber Waves and the importance of fostering the next generation of East End farmers.

"There were four things that I thought were really important. The first one was to be humble and confident. Number two, be open-minded, but have a point of view. The third point was to know there is no substitute to working hard. Last but not least was to embrace change and challenges.”We're in great company with Sylvia Wong, the Owner of The Roundtree Amagansett, where she meticulously polished a hidden gem into an award-winning luxury boutique hotel in the heart of the Hamptons that pays homage to Amagansett's historic farmsteading legacy while embodying the spirit of this iconic east coast destination. Her journey from corporate law executive to passionate first-time hotelier exemplifies a dream transformation—inspired by her global travels to create a rarefied Hampton's experience where guests can truly live like locals. In this episode, Sylvia shares her inspiring career pivot, the challenges of opening during a pandemic, and how she crafted an authentic home-away-from-home experience that keeps guests returning season after season.Top Takeaways[1:40] How Sylvia's corporate career took her to hidden corners of the world where she embraced diverse cultural expressions through architecture and design and found a motherly instinct for nurturing guest experiences. [5:05] It all began with a single raised hand in a meeting, a serendipitous stop on the Jitney shuttle, and Sylvia's unwavering determination to master the art of hospitality—despite having no industry experience whatsoever.[9:30] Steps from Main Street, Sylvia discovered an unassuming property with centuries of stories hidden beneath its weathered shingles and expansive grounds.[17:20] At The Roundtree Amagansett, luxury whispers rather than shouts—as guests discover thoughtful complimentary amenities designed to create moments of surprise and delight from sunrise to starlight. [30:40] Why Sylvia's sense of fulfillment is not found through financial means—it is in seeing genuine happiness wash over her guests' faces as they share their stories and experiences.[34:40] There is much creativity and collaboration yet to come—from new culinary offerings to seamless wellness incorporations to thoughtfully designed spaces where families and friends can gather to create their own Hampton traditions for generations to come.Notable Mentionsil Buco al MareBalsam FarmsAmber Waves Farm, Market & CafeLongHouse ReserveParrish Art MuseumSouth Fork BakeryFrette linens & Matouk towelsThe Maker fragrances RUMOR Rosé Wölffer Estate VineyardThe Chanler at Cliff Walk, Rhode IslandVisit For YourselfThe Roundtree Amagansett Website | @theroundtreeamagansett

In 1908, four prominent families from Cincinnati, Ohio purchased 1000 acres in northern Amagansett and founded the Devon Colony. William Cooper Procter (Procter and Gamble) Richmond Levering (Lever Bros) Joseph Rawn and William Rowe discovered the area during a hunting trip. (As an interesting aside, the subject of our episode 35, Frank Wiborg and The Dunes, was also from Cincinnati). 90 feet above sea level, with Gardiners Bay to the north and the ocean to the south, grand stucco houses, along with some smaller residences, were built in and around Oceanview Lane, between Abrahams Landing and Cranberry Hole Roads. The colony also founded the Devon Yacht Club, still going strong 116 years later. Surrounded by large swaths of preserved land, this area has not been as impacted by extensive development, and retained much of its original appeal.

Hi Everyone, We're a little late with this episode and it's all my fault! As I mentioned in my May 1st blog post (sign up here for updates), for the first time in four years, I conducted an amazing interview with Sheila Kohler and forgot to hit record on Zoom. Sheila--the most gracious person on Earth--forgave me for wasting 45 minutes of her time and agreed to re-record the episode. Thank you to Sheila for sitting down with me twice! After I recovered from the shame, I realized this might be a great boon for readers. I loved Cracks—the short story, the novel, and the movie! You will find links to all three below. It was fascinating to talk about Sheila's adaptation from short story to novel and to hear about the making of the movie and the decision to set the movie in England rather than South Africa. I hope you have had time to read the short story and the novel. What did you think of the movie? Let me know if you have any follow-up questions or comments. I would love to hear. Here are the links: Content Warning: Sexual Assault Cracks, the short story, by Sheila Kohler Cracks, The Novel by Sheila Kohler, available at Bookshop and Amazon. Cracks, The Movie In other news... I am taking a sabbatical from the podcast this summer to rest, regroup, and figure out what direction to take this show in in the future. I love doing it, but every now and then, I think it's a good idea to reevaluate and hone in on what has been valuable and what parts need to go. My first guest in the fall is Tim Tomlinson. Although I will be talking to him about one of his short stories, he has a new book coming out this month. It looks terrific! Check out kellyfordon.com for a picture of the cover and publication information from Nirala. Cheers! Kelly Sheila Kohler Bio: Sheila Kohler was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, the younger of two girls. Upon matriculation at 17 from Saint Andrews, with a distinction in history (1958), she left the country for Europe. The biggest single scene on the East End in the late 1970's had to be Asparagus Beach in Amagansett, or what we refer to today as simply Atlantic Ave. Singles would stand around like upright stalks of Asparagus, to see and be seen. String bikinis ruled the day, as did groupers; not the fish, but the participants themselves who squeezed into rental share houses, predominately in Amagansett's Beach Hampton neighborhood. A fun look back at an absolute moment in time where to be “Young in the Hamptons” was all that. Well, sort of anyway!

From the author of A Most English Princess comes a rich novel about young Princess Alix of Hesse—the future Alexandra, last Empress of Imperial Russia—and her sister, Princess Ella. Their decision to marry into the Romanov royal family changed history. They were granddaughters of Queen Victoria and two of the most beautiful princesses in Europe. Princesses Alix and Ella were destined to wed well and wisely. But while their grandmother wants to join them to the English and German royal families, the sisters fall in love with Russia—and the Romanovs. Defying the Queen's dire warnings, Ella weds the tsar's brother, Grand Duke Serge. Cultivated, aloof, and proud, Serge places his young wife on a pedestal for all to admire. Behind palace gates, Ella struggles to secure private happiness. Alix, whisked away to Russia for Ella's wedding, meets and captivates Nicky—heir apparent to the Russian throne. While loving him deeply, Alix hears a call of conscience, urging her to walk away. Their fateful decisions to marry will lead to tragic consequences for not only themselves and their families, but for millions in Russia and around the globe. The Romanov Brides is a moving and fascinating portrait of two bold and spirited royal sisters, and brings to vivid life imperial Russia—a dazzling, decadent world on the brink of disappearing forever.  Clare McHugh is the author of A Most English Princess, a historical novel about the family of Queen Victoria, and The Romanov Brides. A former newspaper reporter and magazine editor, McHugh graduated from Harvard College with a degree in European history. She currently lives in London and in Amagansett, NY.

The Express News Group hosted its latest Express Sessions live event, "Can the Winter Be Brisk for Businesses in East Hampton?" on February 1 at Rowdy Hall in Amagansett with East Hampton Village Mayor Jerry Larsen, The Anchor Society founder Bess Rattray, Honest Man Restaurant Group owner Mark Smith and Hal Zwick, the director of commercial real estate at Compass Hamptons. Traditionally, merchants in East Hampton Town and its villages make their money in the busy summer season, then have various strategies for riding out the other half of the year — some stay open to serve locals, others close up shop altogether. But the town has a healthy full-time community, has become more of a year-round destination for part-time residents and the newly formed Greater East Hampton Chamber of Commerce has emerged to help serve and unite the town's business community. Filling the empty storefronts in the winter could be good for shoppers — and possibly for business owners as well. ' Another part of this conversation is exploring new ideas to replace pulling up the stakes in winter, with a special focus on a new charitable organization, the Anchor Society, and its vision of creating “winter shops” in the typically vacant storefront spaces.

It was Memorial Day 1974, and during the long train ride, I  finally learned the details of what had only previously been alluded to and the importance of maintaining a veil of secrecy from the locals. This episode is also about  Monica Cipro, the first and only relationship I had with a woman, and despite falling in love with each other that summer, a cold wind of conflicting views about the group ended what had barely begun. I would spend four more years in the group. I've had the good fortune to know Nick for some time, and when I had a recent birthday party at the Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett, Roses Grove happened to be headlining and Nick offered to play a song (or two... or three) in honor of my birthday. By 1936, the RB Allen corporation owned 200 acres, and began developing a community for the middle class, called Beach Hampton. Ultimately, Alfred Scheffer became Beach Hampton's resident architect, designing houses from 560 to 920 feet, with an eye on simplicity, and cost. Amenities were non existent. We talk about the Barbour Beach Hampton Club, completed in Spring 1938, only to be taken away in the Hurricane of September of that year. Lastly, insights, stories and folklore from past and current Beach Hampton residents Pam Keen, Jaine Mehring, and Margie Ruddick.

Esperanza and Irwin tell the story of East Hampton's grandest estate in the early 20th century. Frank Wiborg was a self made millionaire by age 40, establishing offices worldwide for the distribution of ink and lithograph products. Originally summer renters in Amagansett and East Hampton, Wiborg ultimately became a land baron, with holdings encompassing and astonishing 600 acres. In 1909, Wiborg hired the renowned architect Grosvernor Atterbury to design The Dunes, a 30 room stucco mansion that became the largest house in East Hampton. On the ocean, with stables, a dairy barn, sunken Italian gardens and servants quarters. But the grandeur of The Dunes was befallen by personal tragedy and illness, and didn't survive to see its 30th birthday.

Esperanza and Irwin go back 50 years to what may have been the brouhaha of the century on eastern Long Island. The proposed Highway Bypass was to go north of Route 27 through North Sea, Watermill, Bridgehampton, Sagaponack, Wainscott, East Hampton and ultimately ending in eastern Amagansett. "Build it and they shall come", was one perspective, saying traffic will be even worse. Farmland would be decimated. In a 1974 letter to the East Hampton Star, Tom Twomey, the Chair of the Halt The Highway committee claimed "the super highway will make our Town a bedroom community for migrants from Western Suffolk. They will skyrocket our taxes and make possible new giant shopping centers". But a 1974 Star editorial made the point that we can't turn back the clock, the people were already there garnered support from residents wanting the summer traffic eased. Hindsight is always 20/20. The writer Tim Ferguson's thought that "The protective impulse of 50 years ago just bought us more trouble today" is a point of view many believe. Let us know what you think after you listen!

Long before we spoke of "regenerative" farming, before "sustainable" was a thing, before "renewable", almost before "organic", there was "local". Local was a guy you knew. Who grew stuff. Maybe it was corn, or potatoes or flowers or milk. In the case of Balsam Farms, it was mostly corn, and it sat atop a flatbed wagon at the intersection of Windmill Land and Town Lane in Amagansett. You took what you needed and put the money in the box on the corner. It made the news only because periodically, someone would try to steal the money box. Progress was an increasingly sturdier, more theft resistant "honor box". Today, of course, most of what Balsam Farms does on its 200 acres of farmed land here on the South Fork is regenerative, sustainable, renewable, organic. And it's definitely still local. In this week's episode, farmer Ian Calder-Piedmonte sits down and revisits the history, the vision, the drawbacks, the obstacles and the rewards (spoiler alert- it ain't the money, despite the high price of corn!) of farming this way on the South Fork of Long Island. The place where most people drive a Mercedes (or the like), refer to it as The Hamptons, and know nothing of the rich soil and the history of that soil, and what makes Balsam Corn (and tomatoes, and asparagus and melons and yes, shishitos) taste so damn good.

We all remember. For prior generations it was D-Day, or the day Kennedy was shot, or the moon landing. But for anyone alive on September 11, 2001, we remember where we were. What we were doing, how we felt. For Ray Brown, though, it's not a memory of sitting in a coffee bar uptown, or by the pool in Amagansett. Ray remembers that day very differently than the rest of us. Ray comes from a long line of firefighters, and firefighters called to duty on the biggest of days. His grandfather was a firefighter on D-Day, a fact unknown to Ray and his brothers (both firefighters) until long after his grandfather had died. Ray's father retired as chief of all NYFD rescue companies (that's a big deal, FYI). So it was truly an honor to have Ray share his memories of growing up in a household where becoming a NYC firefighter was practically preordained, and how he spent that fateful day in lower Manhattan, the years leading up to it and the years since.

Chances are, if there's something going on at night in East Hampton, Amagansett or even Montauk, especially if it involves a popular live band, Nick Kraus is somewhere behind the scenes. Many have come and gone from the Hamptons nightlife scene, and very few have remained relevant. At the top of the latter list, though, is Nick Kraus. Whether it's scheduling bands, promoting the party, coordinating details or being on site for the event, Nick probably has a hand in it. You might find him anywhere on a given evening, but most likely he'll be at Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett, arguably the best (not-so)  little bar on earth. In addition to his dedication to your entertainment, Nick has long been deeply involved in The Wounded Warrior Project, a highly successful nonprofit benefitting injured combat veterans, specifically Soldier Ride, which was hatched one night here at the Talkhouse. Nowadays he's working on "Warrior Stories", a recorded first-person history of the lives of America's many combat veterans.  Things change, naturally, and so has Nick, and with a family to go home to you might not find him out as late as the old days, and you may find him running in the mornings or jumping in the ocean, no matter how cold. Throughout it all, Nick remains entertaining, optimistic and dedicated to his craft, as you will hear throughtout this episode.
