This week’s episode begins with a focus on recent events in Australia’s defence policy space, which both Allan and Darren see as trending towards the formation of a balancing coalition in the region. Australia will join the US, Japan and India in next month’s Malabar exercises, which was announced while Defence Minister Linda Reynolds was in Tokyo to meet with her counterpart. Meanwhile, Australia will no longer send a naval ship to the Middle East – signalling the conclusion of a decades-long focus on that region. The conversation then turns to a controversial hearing in the Senate, during which Senator Eric Abetz asked three witnesses, all Australians of Chinese heritage, to denounce the Chinese Communist Party unconditionally. Both Allan and Darren explain why they were deeply troubled by this line of questioning, and Darren describes his recent co-authored piece that argues Abetz’s actions actually harmed Australia’s national security. The episode also raises interesting and thorny questions regarding whether and how every Australian should intervene in public debates. Finally, given that Ministerial visits, like those to Japan recently made by the Foreign and Defence Ministers, currently come at the cost of 14-days quarantine upon returning home, what does this say about the future of diplomacy? We thank AIIA intern Mitchell McIntosh for his help with research and audio editing and Rory Stenning for composing our theme music. Tato pilotní epizoda pro potomky Čechoslováků je celá v angličtině. My name is Alena, and in this podcast, I sit down and chat with unique Czech and Slovak compatriots living abroad. I have decided to open up this podcast to descendants of Czechoslovaks who may not speak our languages any longer. Why? Everyone can agree that people relate to each other more through their life or professional stories. And that way sometimes even learn from each other. That is all the more true when one lives abroad. The unspoken bond of familiarity among various groups of different nationalities comes up, especially when living abroad and is real also for the Czechs and Slovaks. Yes, first we tend to blend in wherever we go. Still, there comes a time when most of us start to get homesick. And despite feeling quite happy and settled in our new homes, we tend to seek this familiarity among compatriots. I feel the descendants' personal and professional narratives can offer an unprecedented look into the challenges, failures, and successes of those who emigrated before us, willingly or less so. It can then bring to the new generations of expats a fresh appreciation of the ingenuity, and grit of their ancestors as well as offer a reservoir of tips for life in their new host country. The first descendant that I had the honour of speaking with on this podcast comes from Canberra, Australia. Andrew Greene is the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, i.e. ABC's Defence Reporter. His Czech grandparents emigrated from Czechoslovakia in the 1950s to Australia and started a new life far away from home. But why did they leave? What impact did the partial Czech upbringing have on Andrew? How important is it for him to maintain the connection to the land of his grandparents? What are the real similarities and differences between the Czechs and Aussies? I did enjoy this chat. Andrew proves he's a master of his craft. It is always refreshing and enriching to listen to someone so articulate. But more than that. One can honestly say, two generations of his ancestors did an excellent job at instilling a great appreciation of the Czechoslovak heritage and in the process sparking that way a life long passion. Please enjoy! :)You can comment on the following social media, or drop me an email what did you think. Facebook Linkedin Instagram Twitter Do you know of some exceptional expats, descendants whose intriguing story also made an impact in their new host country? Let me know.

On this episode I sat with Andrew Green or ANDREW G IMAGE as he's know in the community. Andrew is a published photographer, producer, & writer based out of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.Andrew is colorblind. Yet popularity for his photographs and prints continue to surge, in part, for their “color-pop”. Modern technology enables him to balance color during capture and edit. Using what’s known as a color histogram, Andrew can balance color the same as any other photographer. The ANDREW G IMAGE brand and print art has grown at a fast pace since launching in 2016. Andrew began specializing in landscape photography in his home state of Oklahoma. Clients nationwide are now commissioning him to travel and capture the places they call home. While traveling the country is a year-round passion, the “coming home” part of each trip is his favorite. “OKC is my home. Oklahoma is where all of my best childhood memories were made”, Andrew recalls. “I spent every summer in the Arbuckle Mountains at a campground located on the banks of Honey Creek, less than half a mile downstream from Turner Falls. I graduated from Bethany High School, right in the heart of The OKC Metro. Oklahoma will always be my favorite subject to shoot!”While he has spent a lifetime cultivating the disciplines & skills utilized to create the unique brand of work he is known for, ANDREW G's body of work began officially in 2016. All digitals and prints bearing his Crowned Lion logo, or the ANDREW G signature, are 2016 editions or later.Andrew and his family live in the small suburban town of Yukon, OK. His wife, Em, is originally from Yukon. They met and began dating in 1995 as teens, married in 1998, and are celebrating their 22nd Anniversary this year. They have 4 children: Hannah•Clare•Lilly•MaxFeatured•Cover & Featured, OKC Lifestyle Magazine, April, 2019•Cover & Featured, 405 Magazine, October, 2018•Featured, 405 Magazine, June, 2018•Winner, Best Sunset Panorama, Pano-Rama, 2017•Top10, 180-degree Panorama, Pano-Rama, 2016 Follow Andrew on Instagram @andrew_g_image or his website www.andrewgimage.com#thisisoklahoma

Nasir and Matt talk about why Leonardo DiCaprio isn't done with his work on the Wolf of Wall Street and also discuss the recent Yelp decision that businesses should be excited about. Transcript: NASIR: Welcome to our podcast where we cover business in the news and add our legal twist to that business news. My name is Nasir Pasha. MATT: And I’m Matt Staub. NASIR: Why do you always laugh at me at every intro? MATT: You always pause at a different spot. I don’t know. NASIR: It’s for dramatic effect. MATT: I notice it and no one else probably does. NASIR: Yeah. No, you’re probably right. MATT: So, there’s a story that’s been popping up and I think the actual story, I just did a quick Google search on this because I was actually trying to find out when the case initiated, 90 percent – maybe 95 percent – of the stories are about this part with Leonardo DiCaprio having to testify in this case which is such a minor part. To me, that’s just really, like, not news at all in the grand scheme of things with the actual substance of the case. Let me get to the backstory here. I think it was filed in 2014, right? Yeah, 2014, a lawsuit was filed by Andrew Greene. If you’re really into the Wolf of Wall Street, you might know who that is. Basically, he had a bunch of causes of action – libel, right to privacy, defamation, things like that or I guess the libel – basically saying the character of PJ Byrne, the actor in the Wolf of Wall Street, was a portrayal of him – him being Andrew Greene – and he was portrayed very poorly, I think. Let’s see – portrayed as a criminal, a drug user, and a degenerate through this character in the movie. Naturally, he files this complaint against who – the director? NASIR: Yeah, or actually a bunch – not only Paramount, the director – let’s see. MATT: Red Granite Pictures, some other entities. NASIR: Appian Way LLC. MATT: See, basically, he’s saying, “his character in this movie, it was supposed to be me and it was portrayed in a disadvantageous way and so I’m going to sue you.” I think, initially, it was for $50 million. Now, I think it’s around $25 million and it’s probably because some of the claims got kicked out. But that’s kind of where we’re at right now before we get into the Leo aspect of it. NASIR: Yeah. If you guys have seen the movie, honestly, I doubt if you will remember who this guy is because I had to pull him up. I mean, he’s definitely a character in the film but he’s not a very memorable character. MATT: No. NASIR: You know who I’m talking about, right? You’ve seen the film, right? MATT: I watched a brief little clip. I think probably the most memorable part – well, one of the most memorable parts – that he’s in is when I think he’s the one – or at least one of the people – that’s involved, remember when they paid that woman to shave her head for $10,000? NASIR: Oh, okay, yeah. MATT: He was one of or maybe the only person that was the one shaving her head which he says never happened. What’s his name? Jordan… Jordan Belfort, the main character. You know, he says all this stuff happened. I’m sure it’s somewhat exaggerated but he said that the head-shaving thing happened. I think that’d be something that’d be easy to prove, right? NASIR: Yeah, I mean, you would think, but bottom-line is, okay, right now, I guess he’s an investment banker. He claims he wasn’t or is not drug-addicted or misogynistic, “an obnoxious sleazeball” that he says Scorsese and Paramount Pictures basically framed him to be. MATT: Yeah. So, he’s not happy about that. Probably also not happy about the fact that I’m sure he has a lot less money than he used to. So, naturally, he’s going to… You know, you see this movie, I’m sure he thinks, “Wow, it brings a lot of money, how can I profit off of this? I’m going to file this lawsuit claiming that they ripped off me and did so in a bad light.” That’s where things started in February 2014. A bunch of the claims got dismissed September of 2015, I believe,
