Auckland University of Technology has unreservedly apologised to a former academic for its bungled response to her sexual harassment complaint about a former staff member. Dr Marisa Paterson was director of Australian National University's Centre for Gambling Research in 2020 when she publicly accused problem gambling expert, Professor Max Abbott, of stalking and harassing her. Now an Australian MP, Dr Paterson said in a statement that in addition to the sexual harassment, there was significant harm for her as an individual to have to fight an institution, in public, for an adequate response. She says the apology is public recognition of that. Her complaint had earlier prompted an independent review by Kate Davenport QC, in which 273 people reported being bullied or had seen it happen in the AUT workplace. Kathryn speaks to Dr Marisa Paterson from Canberra, and Michael Timmins, the Director of the Office of Human Rights Proceedings.

Queensland MP George Robert Christensen called on citizens to rise up against Covid lockdown measures and vaccine mandates, comparing the governments implementing them with totalitarian regimes responsible for unspeakable atrocities. Speaking before parliament Wednesday, Christensen said Aussie premiers were “drunk on power” and “trying to out-tyrant each other.” “Fear is the justification of choice for coercion and control with non-vaccinated Australians increasingly demonized, ostracized and socially eradicated,” Christensen said. More on Christensen and his landmark vote against his own party and additional lockdown restrictions from 7news.com.au: The Morrison government narrowly avoided an embarrassment in parliament after rogue Queensland LNP George Christensen crossed the floor on Wednesday. Mr Christensen voted with the opposition against the government's bill to make changes to class action laws. “The solution,” the former journalist outlined, “is a rediscovery of human dignity, along with – and I don't say this lightly – civil disobedience.” http://globalreportage.org/2021/11/26/australian-mp-calls-on-free-citizens-to-rise-up-against-covid-tyranny/ --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/global-reportage/support

Australian MP and walking brown-note Craig Kelly wants to introduce laws to stop Facebook banning his effort to consistently lie to Australians and troll the planet via its social media platform. Kelly invoked the concept of freedom of speech, which we have no right to in Australia, and claimed banning him permanently from spreading his brand of viral misinformation is some kind of threat to democracy. The MP used Twitter and various major media services to talk at length about how his freedom of speech had been removed. Kelly now plans to push for legislation to do something or other about his ban from his favourite platform. Let's assume it's to enact a bill of rights for Australian citizens and not just to demand his personal right to scream nonsense online. It's earnings report season for Silicon Valley companies, which is a good time to point out Bits generally avoids the boring business questions of who raised what, who earned what and stats like EBITDA, ARPU, and growth stats galore.
