From a plumbing-free house in post-war Austria to the glamour of Hollywood and the Governor's mansion in California, Arnold Schwarzenegger's life story is one of the most remarkable in modern history. In this episode, we trace the extraordinary rise of the “Austrian Oak,” a man who didn't just chase the American Dream — he body-slammed it into reality. We begin with Arnold's tough upbringing under a strict father in rural Thal, and how cinema and bodybuilding became his escape. From going AWOL to win his first competition to becoming Mr. Universe by age 20, Arnold's relentless ambition was evident early on. But it was his leap to the United States that truly set the stage for global superstardom. Arnold's charisma and dominance reshaped bodybuilding, but his ambition didn't stop there. With Conan the Barbarian and The Terminator, he broke into Hollywood, creating an iconic image of the action hero that defined a generation. We explore the peaks of his film career, including T2, Predator, and even his turn to comedy in Kindergarten Cop. Then came the ultimate plot twist: politics. Arnold's time as Governor of California was filled with both unexpected accomplishments and public controversy, culminating in a dramatic personal scandal. Yet, like all great screen icons, he refused to stay down for long. Now in his seventies, Arnold has stepped into the role of public philosopher, environmental advocate, and nostalgia icon. In this deep-dive episode, we explore how one man conquered three careers — bodybuilding, acting, and politics — and redefined what it means to be a self-made legend. Talk2TheHand is an independent throwback podcast run by husband and wife, Jimmy and Beth. Obsessed with 90s nostalgia and 90s celebrities, we'll rewind the years and take you back to the greatest era of our lives.   New episodes bursting with nostalgia of the 90s released on Tuesdays. It is with much regret that we come to the end of the journey that has been The Film '89 Podcast, as tonight's episode marks for the guys a peak of sorts, a culmination of the last 7 years which has all led to the film we're covering on this monumental episode. Steve, Neil and Skye are joined by a returning co-host who hasn't been on Film '89 since Episode 40, way back in November 2019, when he and Steve reviewed The Irishman, it's our good friend, Tony Sower. Tony joins us to discuss his all-time favorite film, a film that we've been threatening to cover on the podcast for the longest time. If the name of this podcast takes influence from the ‘80s and nostalgia for movies we grew up with, then this film in a way typifies that era. And if the 1980s will be remembered for particular types of film, then the high concept action film is surely one of those types, born out of a decade where excess was celebrated. That film is the 1985 Arnold Schwarzenegger action classic, Commando. Some frankly hyperbolic opinions are going to be put forth on tonight's episode, opinions as big as the Austrian Oak himself. Commando sees Arnie, after the fantasy heroics of Conan The Barbarian and the sci-fi horror of The Terminator, playing a more grounded, contemporary role as retired Army Commando, John Matrix. Yet there's ultimately nothing grounded when it comes to Commando, a film that takes over the top machismo to hitherto unseen levels in a film that may be the action film distilled to its purest form. We hope you've enjoyed The Film '89 Podcast, we'd love to carry on, but after a peak like Commando, there's nowhere to go but down, and we always intended to go out on a high. Adios.

The Running Man, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, resembles the Richard Bachman (Stephen King) novel it was based on in name only. Naturally, since its lead is the "Austrian Oak," it is a testosterone-fueled action movie with a light sprinkling of dystopian allegories. That said, it crushes both of those elements. Certainly, The Running Man's dire warnings may feel satirical, but viewed through a contemporary lens, they are wildly prescient. Deep fake technology, live executions being fed to the masses in the form of a game show, and an America run by corporate greed are not just plausible, we're living through most of it. In the 1980s, when the country was high on Reaganomics, The Running Man's themes sadly failed to resonate with audiences. On a budget of nearly $30 million, it grossed just north of $38 million. That, unlike Cadre Cola, does not hit the spot. Now, sit back, get energized with a Hazing Arizona from Walter Station Brewery, and let's start running! Welcome to the first episode of Shadow Talk, the podcast hosted by six-time Mr Olympia winner and founder of nutrition and supplement specialists DY Nutrition, Dorian Yates. Shadow Talk is a brand new podcast series that aims to answer the question: How can you be a better version of yourself? Dorian will be welcoming guests from across the world, to not only talk fitness and health, but how to mentally and spiritually improve oneself. Hosting guests from not only his competitive bodybuilding past, but also from his own journey to self improvement, Dorian will ask the questions that will allow you, the audience, to take away valuable and practice lessons you can apply to your own journey. Dorian's first guest is professional actor and bodybuilder Tom Platz.   Known worldwide as Golden Eagle or The Quadfather, Tom is considered the uncrowned Mr. Olympia 1981.  In 1965, Tom was just 10 years old when he began to train, his parents having bought him bodybuilding guru Joe Weider's guide to training along with a full set of equipment. One of the most infamous bodybuilders of the 1970s and 1980s, Platz appeared on the Mr. Olympia stage multiple times, competing against some of the greats such as ‘The Austrian Oak', Arnold Schwarzenegger and Chris Dickerson. Many will recognize Tom for his massive and shredded legs, which are still big even in his 60s. Despite never taking home a first-place title, Platz gave bodybuilding his all and many argue that he should have achieved better placings throughout his career. Notable contest placements include: 1986 Mr. Olympia – IFBB, 11th 1985 Mr. Olympia – IFBB, 7th 1984 Mr. Olympia – IFBB, 9th 1982 Mr. Olympia – IFBB, 6th 1981 Mr. Olympia – IFBB, 3rd 1980 World Pro Championships – IFBB, Mr. Universe Tom is very well known for his extremely intensive training, where he would push himself hard and often to failure, much like Mike Mentzer and his Heavy Duty methods.  He stated that he never wanted to leave the gym knowing he could have done more, and when you think you are finished you actually have about 5 more reps in you. He is still heavily involved in the fitness industry, passing on his knowledge and training methods to younger generations. In his signature larger-than-life style, Arnold Schwarzenegger's Total Recall is a revealing self-portrait of his illustrious, controversial, and truly unique life. The greatest immigrant success story of our time. His story is unique, and uniquely entertaining, and he tells it brilliantly in these pages. He was born in a year of famine, in a small Austrian town, the son of an austere police chief. He dreamed of moving to America to become a bodybuilding champion and a movie star. By the age of twenty-one, he was living in Los Angeles and had been crowned Mr. Universe. Within five years, he had learned English and become the greatest bodybuilder in the world. Within ten years, he had earned his college degree and was a millionaire from his business enterprises in real estate, landscaping, and bodybuilding. He was also the winner of a Golden Globe Award for his debut as a dramatic actor in Stay Hungry. Within twenty years, he was the world's biggest movie star, the husband of Maria Shriver, and an emerging Republican leader who was part of the Kennedy family. Thirty-six years after coming to America, the man once known by fellow bodybuilders as the Austrian Oak was elected governor of California, the seventh largest economy in the world. He led the state through a budget crisis, natural disasters, and political turmoil, working across party lines for a better environment, election reforms, and bipartisan solutions. With Maria Shriver, he raised four fantastic children. In the wake of a scandal he brought upon himself, he tried to keep his family together. Until now, he has never told the full story of his life, in his own voice. Here is Arnold, with total recall.

Even Arnie isn't "a self made man" [Don't go 'Lone Wolf'] We're on a mission to help one million people RISE by 2030 - join the movement at www.myrise.co.uk Four years ago Arnold Schwarzenegger delivered a commencement speech at the University of Houston. There's a section of it that's often shared online. Here it is: “Now, on your diplomas, there will be only one name on it and this is yours. But I hope that that doesn't confuse and that you think that you maybe made it this far by yourself. No you didn't. It took a lot of help. None of us can make it alone. None of us. Not even the guy that is talking to you right now that was the greatest bodybuilder of all time. Not even me that has been the Terminator and went back in time to save the human race. Not even me that fought and killed predators with his bare hands. “I always tell people that you can call me anything that you want. You can call me Arnold. You can call me Schwarzenegger. You can call me the Austrian Oak. You can call me Schwarzie. You can call me Arnie. But don't ever ever call me a self-made man. “This is so important for you to understand. I didn't make it that far on my own. I mean, to accept that credit or that mantle would discount every single person that has helped me to get here today — that gave me advice, that made an effort, that gave me time, that lifted me when I fell. It gives the wrong impression that we can do it alone. None of us can. The whole concept of self-made man, or woman, is a myth.” It's something we often forget. Particularly when we're struggling. We go all “Lone Wolf”. Tell ourselves “I know what I need to do, I just need need to do it”. Forgetting that we told ourselves that last time (and the time before). And that it's what everyone ever who isn't achieving what they'd like is telling themselves. Forgetting that, when we have had success, it wasn't just down to our own efforts. It was when we accepted help and support. When we didn't allow our ego to get in the way. We get it. We've been there. We all have. But we all know that our best success comes with the support of others. That taking less help and support when we're struggling will only make things worse. That the Lone Wolf always starves. If you're already a member and have been a bit “head in the sand” maybe use this as a nudge to start responding. To accept the help and support that's there. Much love, Jon ‘Hallzie'

He graced the big & small screen alike, and worked with nearly every star of Hollywood's Golden Age. Beyond performing, where the world thought The Austrian Oak was the first of his kind to transition from athletics to acting, actually Big Bill did it first. In this retrospective, previously aired on Cuppa Caxton, the identity and the entity of William Smith is dissected, along with his accomplishments is discussed and a montage of his best known work follows suit. In this week's installment of Catching Up On Cinema's Action April event month, Kyle and Trevor are joined by the former's brother Nik in reviewing Mark L. Lester and Arnold Schwarzenegger's cheesy action classic, Commando (1985)! Seemingly produced in direct response to the success of the Rambo series, and indeed the emergence of the over-the-top jingoistic action films of the day, the film embraces the larger than life qualities of it's headlining star, trading in patriotism and political commentary for one liners and absurdism. Not exactly regarded as being a top tier movie in the storied career of the Austrian Oak, the film is nevertheless a campy and fun diversion that serves as perhaps the best example of what most (ignorant) people assume his films to be.

Born into a stiff, lower middle class Austrian background just after the war, Arnold Schwarzenegger rebelled from his rigid father and proscribed life at an early age, eschewing the family plans for his life and career to pursue a rocky road in the dubious world of bodybuilding. Idolizing the likes of up and coming cinematic pepla stars like Steve Reeves and especially Reg Park, the young Arnold followed his dreams from breaking into local gyms to work out on off hours to participating in international contests and a solo move to America, without even possessing a proper command of the English language. Catching the attention of big names in the physical fitness field like Britain's Wag Bennett and America's Joe Wieder, the young up and comer became the face of Wieder's supplement and equipment empire for many a year, his association with the famed Muscle and Fitness magazine running well into recent years. Taking major titles like Mr. Olympia and Mr. Universe multiple times apiece, by the time the documentary Pumping Iron popularized what had been seen as something of a mockable geek sideshow into the exercise craze of the past 40 years, he'd already starred in two feature films as lead or top billed costar to big names like Jeff Bridges, Sally Field and even ubiquitous comedian/voice actor Arnold Stang...and the best was yet to come. For with the dawn of the 1980s came a starring role in a grim, philosophical take on Robert E. Howard's famed barbarian warrior and king...and a long career in quip-heavy, surprisingly light hearted action cinema began. Parlaying his successes in both bodybuilding and cinema into a political career, he's become not only a two term state governor, but expanding his ostensible party politik to become one of the more outspoken voices both for green initiatives and against perhaps the most corrupt administration ever to sit in office... Always surprising, never stagnating, tonight we celebrate the life and films of the Austrian Oak and Governator himself, the inimitable Arnold Schwarzenegger! As a longtime fan since childhood, Ryan has loads of geeky factoids about the film, the series and Cameron's overall career (and tries to give some deserved love to unsung writer Gale Anne Hurd as well), while Dave ponders the implications of what cyborg modifications and future automation might do to us as a species (including the horrific concept of a "Cosby-Bot"). Between 1984 and 1994 we bore witness to the Arnie Ascendency, as Mr. Schwarzenegger rose to the top of the box office and refused to leave. At least as far as this carefully selected timeframe is concerned, sparing us all the pain of reliving Eraser and End of Days. We bluff and bluster our way through the outright displays of machismo in The Terminator, Commando, Raw Deal, Predator, The Running Man, Red Heat, Total Recall, Terminator 2, Last Action Hero and True Lies. This month’s Out Now with Aaron and Abe commentary track is a game nobody survives, but Schwarzenegger has yet to play. Aaron and Abe are joined by guests Jim Dietz and Brandon Peters to go over the sci-fi action/satire The Running Man, starring the Austrian Oak himself. The group goes into what makes this Paul Michael Glaser film an interesting 80s touchstone with plenty in common with modern times. Be prepared for lots of fun facts about the film, stories surrounding the search for a director, Sven-Ole Thorsen sightings and the general fun and tangents you expect when it comes to these episodes. Get ready to play; as this is no rerun, this is the podcast covering the murderous game show that took a nation by storm. #TheRunningMan #OutNow #Commentary #ArnoldSchwarzenegger #1980sMovie #Action #ScienceFiction #RealityTelevision #SvenOleThorsen #MariaConchitaAlonso #PaulMichaelGlaser #RichardDawson #JesseVentura #JimBrown #Podcast #Film #Entertainment #Movie
