Brittany Howard's new album “What Now” is her second solo release since a hiatus with her band Alabama Shakes. Now more than ever, she's exploring the potential of her famous raspy voice by pairing it with surprisingly poppy songs about love and heartbreak. Brittany sits down with Tom to talk about the record and finding the courage to step into new musical territory.Plus, the boys from Mumford and Sons are back with their first new song since 2019, titled “Good People.” What you might find surprising about the track is that it features and was produced by Pharell. Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett and Ted Dwayne from the band chat with Tom about the single and what it's been like moving ahead with the band as a trio.

Brooklyn-based architectural practice SO|IL's designs grace five continents; they have garnered a reputation for crafting exquisite arts spaces. They are joined by musician Ben Lovett, one of the founding members of folk rock outfit, Mumford & Sons. When he's not on stage, he puts his energy into reinvigorating tired music venues with his company TVG. Launching in 2016, TVG is now a leader in this field, helping to ensure the survival of spectacular independent venues which would otherwise be vulnerable to closure. The opportunity to design a cultural space is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for any architect. For every 100,000 homes, 5 museums and 1 concert hall are funded. In this episode of In the Studio, we're afforded a rare opportunity to get behind-the-scenes and under the floorboards with the SO|IL experts as they describe how their philosophy and processes enrich and shape their buildings. Ben's experience as a musician and performer, and now as a venue developer, provides him with a unique perspective on these types of spaces, understanding the needs of performers as well as those of the audience. He also grasps how these spaces can directly affect and inspire composers and other artists. The guests discuss what makes a successful performance space, and the importance of architecture in music's long-term development. Today we've got not one, but two guests: Composer Ben Lovett & Film Editor David Marks. They were part of the team that brought us the fantastic new horror film, THE NIGHT HOUSE. It stars Rebecca Hall in an unforgettable performance reminiscent of Julie Christie in DON'T LOOK NOW. Movies are sight and sound…music and imagery spliced together to tell a story…and without the crafts of music and editing…well, we really wouldn't the movies. It's a great conversation about how a composer and an editor collaborate not just with a director, but with each other. We talk about how both of these artists found their way into filmmaking, and what inspires them to keep creating. It's a great talk! Please listen, enjoy, and share! Learn more about your ad choices. A Film.Music.Media Interview | Produced & Presented by Kaya Savas
On this Devil's Night, who better to raise a little hell with than my latest guest: Ben Lovett. Ben and I primarily talk about his latest score, Hellraiser, which is a reimagining/remake of Clive Barker's original novella The Hellbound Heart. As part of that discussion, we cover (among other things), Ben's utilization of Chris Young's themes for the original film, making the score something uniquely his own, and dealing with the pressure (and external criticism) that comes with working on such a big, beloved (sometimes) franchise. Hellraiser is currently streaming on Hulu, while Ben's score (and much of the rest of his music) is widely available physically and digitally, including on Ben's bandcamp. In addition, Mondo is releasing a limited edition (2,000 copies) vinyl in connection with Lakeshore Records and Death Waltz Recording.
Imagine a world where pain and pleasure are one and the same, where hellish delights await those who crave the extremities of sensation. That's the philosophical underpinning behind Clive Barker's Hellraiser series, one of horror's most long-running and iconic franchises, centering around the poor unfortunate souls who come across the Lamarchand Box, a mysterious puzzle box which -- when opened -- unleashes the Cenobites, a cabal of deformed hedonists riding the razor's edge of sadomasochistic experience. It's a series that's run across eleven films over thirty-plus years, the latest being a radical reimagining courtesy of The Night House and Relative director David Bruckner. This time, series icon Pinhead is reimagined as a "dark priest" played by Sense8's Jamie Clayton, who soon haunts a recovering addict named Riley (Odessa A'zion), who crosses paths with the Lamarchand Box after her brother goes missing. It's a film filled with grim delights and no small amount of squicky body horror, as our characters learn firsthand what happens when otherworldly forces conspire to tear your soul apart. Just as the Cenobites explore the curious intersections between blood and beauty, so does Bruckner's regular composer, Ben Lovett, experiment with different configurations of his musical puzzle box. In addition to his distinctive use of electronic elements and discordant, warped instrumentation, he finds ways to weave in Christopher Young's classic theme from the 1991 original, tying it to Hellraisers of the past while cementing Bruckner's version as its own unique beast. Now, Ben and I talk about his score to Hellraiser, his collaboration with David Bruckner, and much more (alongside commentary tracks from the score). You can find Ben Lovett at his official website here. Hellraiser is currently streaming on Hulu. You can also listen to the score on your preferred music streaming service courtesy of Lakeshore Records.
Ben Lovett, composer for the new Hellraiser film, joins the podcast to discuss his score and partnership with director David Bruckner, and more. Also, Aaron ends up scared in the woods and plays new music by Fawn (former Chromatics/Glass Candy members) and Mecha Maiko.

Today we're speaking to Ben Lovett from Mumford and Sons.Ben started a company called Venue Group where he is CEO, his brother CFO (who comes from running Soho Houses finance) and his dad the chairman.Venue Group is the company that brought us Flat Iron Square in Southwark and Goods Way in Kings Cross (which launched in March just one week before lockdown). He's on a mission to create more grassroots music venues in London and help build the live music and night scene. His thinking is that we need to bridge the gap between being massive and people having no idea who you are. That's why grassroots venues are so important.” Omeara was the first live music venue to launch occupying 3 of the arches in Flat Iron Square the rest of would be be food and drink vendors which ben ended up taking management of It seemed a natural next step as music food and nightlife all go hand in hand.Flat iron square is a massive laid back outdoor food hall that is gorgeous for summer time but works just as well all throughout winter. They have vendors like Mother Clucker who we spoke to last week, Breddos, Where The Pancakes Are, and Lupins. Then just before lockdown Goods Way in Kings X launched which included the live music venue Lafayette and indoor food and drinks hall. The vibe of Goods Way is more cleaned up with a New Orleans cobbled streets and iron balconies theme running throughout. They have a very cool looking bar that looks like a modern twist on an old time southern saloon. Some of the same vendors from ft iron moved over with them like Breddos but they have also brought in new vendors like Duck Truck, Temple of Seitan and Sushi on Jones the much loved sushi place in NYC.Sadly Goodsway was only open for a week before lockdown but it promises to please once it is safe to get back in there.Something i really loved from what Ben said was that he wasn't creating a venue that was about the brand staying and that being the end of the road for them. In fact it was quite the opposite - he wants Flat Iron Square and Goods Way to be launching points for these guys. He wants then to benefit from the collective footfall and then carry on growing into something of their own eventually. Much like the path Mother Clucker are on.Something else I love is that he has sort of taken on this role of helping build the economy both here in London and in the US. He explains some of the work he does with the government to understand how venues like his help to provide jobs and strengthen the economy for the towns and cities they are in. So we will weave in and out of music and food throughout the episode as it is all part of his story. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/your-tables-ready. In the May Mother's Day installment of Blumhouse Television and Hulu's anthology event series, Into the Dark, Delivered, a pregnant woman’s life is upended when she realizes someone close to her has darker plans for her and the baby. Directed by Emma Tammi, who did The Wind, and starring Tina Majorino, Natalie Paul, Michael Cassidy, and Micah Parker, the episode is creepy as hell, thanks to a really dark turn from Majorino, but also thanks to the score by composer Ben Lovett. Lovett had previously worked with director Tammi on The Wind, but has also done a slew of work with director David Bruckner, such The Ritual and The Signal. We talk about Delivered and Lovett's work with Bruckner, as well the recently-released The Dark Red, out now from Dark Sky Films. There may also be AJ Bowen content.
