We open the hour with talk of the Bill Belichick relationship with a 24 year old. He gave her a nice note with his autograph that now her friends have shared with TMZ. We discuss the notion that their meeting was innocent because young men think that older men talking to young women does not have a threatening aura. Are people obsessing a bit too much about this (this is me, your writer, asking this). Before C-Lo gets going with an update, a mention of Gisele Bundchen's partner morphs into discussing which male coworkers can be seen being sexual. Sports talk shows up and we have the Mets banging out 22 hits in their victory over the Rangers. They were just hitting their pitching hard. As for the Yanks, they open a series with the O's. Rizzo is out with a broken arm - 4 to 6 weeks. Yanks will bring up the hot Ben Rice and give him a shot at first base. Jomboy provides some lip-reading of a manager vs. umpire argument. Rory McIlroy posted his disappointment at losing and congratulated Bryson DeChambeau. He's taking a month off to get ready for the Scottish & British Opens. In our last hourly segment, Al says he would love to be a juror in retirement. Jerry suggests that Al should study up and be a judge.
Hour 1 It's Al & Jerry this morning as Boomer & Gio take the day off for whatever reason. The sports talk starts with the Mets who have gone 10-2 during the last dozen games. They ruined the Rangers last night with a lineup that just tee'd up on Texas pitching. Whatever the reason - the team is clicking right now, Grimace, the “gay” Mets - it's working. Just go with it, fans. We drift into talk about Al's dislike for Canada. This becomes a mention about how much of America looks the same with malls, stores, fast food, etc. We touch upon how it seems Pete Alonso simply should be a Met. He fits and is comfortable here. C-Lo is in the update spot today and brings us sounds of the Mets victory including post-game stuff and their new secret handshake. The Arlington, TX mariachi band was playing Creed to soothe the dying souls of their fans. We also go into an aside about Grimace from the McDonald's Cinematic Universe throwing out the first pitch. Celtics beat the Mavs to become the 2024 NBA Champs. We end the hour with Jerry making a comparison between how the Celtics built a championship team and what David Stearns and Steve Cohen want to do with the Mets. Al has been paying attention to the patterns of attractive joggers on the way to work - the way serial killers do. Anthony in Belleville regales us with his stunningly bad “Gay Mets” theme song. A caller loves the Who album, Tommy, and we remember the Elton John and Billy Joel tour. Hour 2 Jerry reminisces that the NBA Championship used to be a big deal for sports fans “back in the day” and now, not so much. A caller asks whether Cole is coming back too soon and what the Yankees pitching rotation will be moving forward. We preview the Yankees/Orioles series which begins tonight. Another caller asks that now with Rizzo injured, would the Yankees attempt to make a run at Pete Alonso. Unlikely. C-Lo pops up with sound of the DJ Stewart home run from last night's Mets victory. Would people recognize DJ Stewart if he was walking down the street? We have a clip of Sal Licata extremely agitated that Grimace is being mentioned as a catalyst for the Mets run. On the other hand, Evan Roberts is on board and offers to make love to the McDonald's mascot. Reports that Anthony Rizzo will be out 4 to 6 weeks. Sound of the Payton Pritchard buzzer beater to end the first half. Jayson Tatum sound from after the game and he's happy. Celtics owner mistakes Lisa Salters for another woman reporter. Mike Breen points out an inappropriately mouthy fan saying bad things at Kyrie Irving. Panthers/Oilers tonight with Florida trying to close it out. The person called “Oilers Girl” is unapologetic about her world famous display - as well she should be. As the hour grinds to a halt, Jerry has an 80s baseball quiz for Al. A caller mentions how a shirt kept him safe from opposing fans. Another caller with deep knowledge of alt rock history. A Red Sox fan doesn't understand why the Steve Cohen regime is being disparaged so much. The hour cuts off because they didn't go to a break so pick it up next hour. Hour 3 We open the hour with talk of the Bill Belichick relationship with a 24 year old. He gave her a nice note with his autograph that now her friends have shared with TMZ. We discuss the notion that their meeting was innocent because young men think that older men talking to young women does not have a threatening aura. Are people obsessing a bit too much about this (this is me, your writer, asking this). Hour 4 A caller clears up that Evan Roberts is an alternate juror which means he'll probably be summarily dismissed with a “see ya” before deliberations. Another caller underlines the importance of alternates to the judicial system. A third caller who was charged with a crime clears up the notion of self-defense. Lo and behold, Evan Roberts calls in to defend himself against charges he misrepresented his jury status to the listening public. He also remarks on his enthusiasm for Grimace. Al breaks news of Justin Timberlake being arrested for driving while intoxicated. Yet one more caller asks Jerry if he allows himself to have a fan's reaction when calling Rutgers games. A criminal defense attorney checks in to tell us why he would have never picked Evan for a jury. C-Lo is in but we start with discussion of golfing experiences. The final sports report of the day begins with more Mets from their hit-fest against the Rangers. We talk about Lindor finally in the swing of things. Steve Gelbs talked to deGrom about his time with the Mets. Yanks get back into it with the O's in town. Gerrit Cole back from IL starts tomorrow. Ben Rice was called up to replace the injured Rizzo. Celtics are NBA Champs. McIlroy praises DeChambeau. Moment of the Day involves Al's envisioning male coworkers having sex. The show ends with callers including one 65 year old gentleman who is quite satisfied dating younger women.

Garrett and Meg kick off this Tuesday show with some thoughts on the Women's PGA Championship: the background and playing style of Ruoning Yin, the 20-year-old champion; the continued excellence of Rose Zhang; and the continued failures of the networks to air women's major championships in a suitable fashion. Garrett then checks in with Ben Coley (@BenColeyGolf) of Sporting Life about the state of the DP World Tour (28:31). Garrett and Ben talk about the (increasingly distant) possibility of a "links season" consisting of the Irish, Scottish, and British Opens as well as the tour's uncertain positioning in—or perhaps outside of—the burgeoning alliance between the PGA Tour and the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund. To go out on a more lighthearted note, Garrett and Ben wrap up with some recommendations (1:00:36).
At 27 years of age, 7 World Championships, 4 British Opens and at least 22 PSA titles to her name, Nour El Sherbini's accomplishments in the game are mind blowing. And amazingly, this chapter of her career, the one which has her winning the most prestigious events in the sport consistently, is far from over. Nour and I talk about her highly successful 2022/23 campaign, the women's game, the passion of Gregory Gaultier, Nicol David, and much more.
Winner of three Women's British Opens, Sherri Steinhauer, reflects back on the one that counted as a major, in 2006 at Royal Lytham. She fondly remembers her teacher, the late Manuel de la Torre, long-time professional at Milwaukee CC and recounts her other Tour wins and the physical and mental challenges that present themselves when playing golf at the highest level. Sherri was a 4-time member of the Solheim Cup teams and is proud of her undefeated record in foursomes and singles play and she enjoyed her stint as an Assistant Captain to Rosie Jones at the 2011 Solheim Cup. Sherri Steinhauer, now a serious pickle ball competitor in her retirement, wraps up her life story, "FORE the Good of the Game."
There's much to unpack from Art Spander's joyful journey of six decades as a sportswriter. The indefatigable Bay Area legend recalls the rise of young Tiger Woods and offers an intriguing theory. Art recounts covering iconic games such as The Catch, and The Miracle on Ice. He puts us at the Cal-Stanford game when “the band is on the field!” Art shares his love for major sporting events, especially the Rose Bowl. And he laughs about receiving a special delivery from Candlestick Park's sod squad, and about being threatened by three athletes in a five-day span. Art explains how he ended up with Kyle Shanahan's backpack and Super Bowl game plan. He takes us to training camp with the motley Oakland Raiders of the 1970s. Rules? What rules? Oh, and Art covered Marilyn Monroe's funeral. What? Seriously. Hear about that and more. What a trip. Spander has been a fixture in the Bay Area sports scene since 1965, and he has practically lived at major sporting events. He attended or covered 67 consecutive Rose Bowls beginning in 1954 when he sold game programs. He has covered the Masters 55 times, including 54 in a row, and nearly every U.S. Open golf tournament since 1966. He has worked more than 40 Super Bowls, and more than 50 tennis Grand Slam events, including Wimbledon about 30 times. Art has covered more than 30 Final Fours, more than 30 British Opens, and the World Series nearly 20 times. He has also covered multiple Summer and Winter Olympics, the Ryder Cup, each of the Triple Crown thoroughbred races, the Indianapolis 500, nearly every Crosby/AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am for more than a half-century and every Cal-Stanford football game since 1968. Some crazy bounces in a PGA playoff. Jimmy plays golf with Jim Rutledge who played in two British Opens. Canada meets Finland at World Juniors, Jim says he isn't hearing much about the tourney in Edmonton. Jonathan Huberdeau donates his brain to science. Robin Lehner out of the year. And the new pro 3 on 3 hockey league "3ICE" probably won't hit a big.

James tweeted Tuesday night that his comments in the trailer weren’t intended to be critical of the U.S. efforts to get Griner back. It’s unclear when the show was filmed, although in the trailer it’s mentioned she had been in Russia for over 110 days which would be roughly five weeks ago. The league’s board of governors finalized those two matters Tuesday by approving a plan to award one free throw when teams are disadvantaged by the take foul. They also removed the “experimental” designation from the play-in element to the postseason. NBASL – NBA Summer League Yesterday Chicago Bulls 93, Toronto Raptors 83 Indiana Pacers 101, Detroit Pistons 87 NHL – Scotty Bowman moves on from job as Blackhawks adviser Scotty Bowman says he no longer works for the Chicago Blackhawks. There’s always something special about a British Open at St. Andrews. This one rises to an even greater occasion as the 150th edition. Tiger Woods is playing his third major of the year. Xander Schauffele is coming off his second straight win. Rory McIlroy tries to end eight years without a major. All the elements are in place. Elsewhere, the PGA Tour stages its only modified Stableford scoring tournament in Lake Tahoe. The LPGA Tour has its only official team event in Michigan. But it’s all about St. Andrews this week. Golf – Tiger Woods unsure how many Opens he has left at St. Andrews Tiger Woods will be crossing the Swilcan Bridge for the last time at some point this week at St. Andrews. He just doesn’t know if it will be the last time this year or forever. Woods doesn’t know how many British Opens he has left at the home of golf. All that matters is playing this one. That explains why he has walked more holes ahead of the opening round than the previous two majors combined. Woods is a two-time Open champion at St. Andrews. Winning another is a tall order. He has played only seven competitive rounds this year. NCAABSB – Notre Dame hires VCU’s Shawn Stiffler as new baseball coach Shawn Stiffler is the new baseball coach at Notre Dame. Prosecutors say Ruggs’ blood alcohol level after the crash in Las Vegas was 0.16%, which is twice the legal limit for drivers in Nevada. It was late to begin with and then Brendan and Andy discovered at minute 43 that they had neglected to hit the record button on the first attempt at this episode. So this is a second run, and if we're being honest, it's not their best effort. They run through the schedule for the week, tell an amusing Bryson story from last year's win that you may not have heard, and ponder what the Thicc Boi's weight is down to these days. Mito Pereira having to hope for a spot off the alternate list after getting the battlefield promotion is, as you might expect, noted. Event of the week is a duel between an elite amateur event and an event where the leader got stuck in an elevator that goes up to one of the tee boxes. Last but not least, enter the first ever Coffee Pot, a pool covering the next three weeks of peak Coffee Golf season -- the Irish, Scottish, and British Opens. It's the usual pool with some amusing categories to make picks from with both weekly and cumulative winners.
Guests: Eloise Wellings, Madeline Hills, Michael Crooks, Carrie Graf, Keely Froling & Heather McKay. How far has women’s sport come? Events like Australia's Twenty20 World Cup with a crowd of 90,000 in March suggest a long way. In episode four of our Sport Integrity Australia podcast ‘On Side’, we discuss parity in sport - where we’ve come from and what still needs to be done - with one of our greatest sportswomen Heather McKay, one of our greatest basketball coaches Carrie Graf and up-and-coming basketball star Keely Froling. We also chat to Baseball Australia’s General Manager Performance Pathways & Player Development, Michael Crooks, about the sport’s challenges – funding, match fixing, differences in anti-doping in the Major League - and creating pathways for young athletes dreaming big in the US. Finally, we talk to Gold Coast Commonwealth Games heroes Eloise Wellings and Madeline Hills who, along with Celia Sullohern, created one of the highlights of the Games when they waited for Lineo Chaka at the finish line, and triple Olympian Bronwen Knox answers the question “If one person in a team tests positive, does the whole team get tested?” A leading advocate for the equality in sport, Graf says there needs to be a shift in the thinking of what is a Return On Investment “rather than just commercial and eye balls”. “I was a little girl who grew up when there wasn’t any role models and you couldn’t aspire to work as a professional athlete, as a coach,” she says. “l was fortunate to have a professional coaching career for 20-plus years, I think we’re certainly seeing a shift that little girls can look on TV and look around the media and go ‘wow, I could do this a job’, and that that is a legitimate job but I still think there is a long, long way to go.” Froling, who has two brothers currently playing in the National Basketball League, says she often compares the rewards. “I look at what the boys get and what they’re doing and I think, ‘oh, it’s so annoying’ … we work just as hard if not harder than them and aren’t rewarded in the same way.” It’s certainly a long way from when McKay, a winner of 16 British Opens in a row, competed as an amateur, having to take two months off work without pay simply to play. As an amateur she says she played “for fun” and without the pressure athletes’ face now. “Today the pressure is there, the big money’s there, so when the money is there, certainly there is going to be a lot of pressure because you’ve got to perform and that’s really the difference between today and in my time. It’s their full-time job.” With significant contracts up for grabs for young baseballers overseas, Crooks is trying to develop right path for talented young players. “Managing the workloads and expectations for these young players is really, really critical to make sure that they get the most of their opportunity when they do finally get over to the United States as opposed to sending them over as a 16-year-old with no support mechanisms, no safety nets for them and basically leaving them to the wolves so to speak to try and survive in what is an incredible cut-throat world of professional sport,” Crooks says. In our From The Highlight Reel segment Australian 10,000m runners Eloise Wellings and Madeline Hills relive an act of sportsmanship that was beamed around the globe. “We were just doing what we would always do in any other race and it just so happened that there was a whole lot of cameras and a whole lot of people watching,” says Wellings, who concedes her own run was “one of the worst” of her career. “It takes vulnerability to finish a race like that for Lineo when things aren’t going well to run the last three laps on your own. As Madeline said you are very exposed and it’s a vulnerable thing to be in.” Madeline, agrees. “We’ve all had that day,” she says. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
On this episode we discuss Working From Home and how to do it effectively. We speak with Sandy Zinn who has been working from home since 2012/2013, but working from anywhere since the early 2000s when he was covering the Olympics and Golf for ESPN. For him, it is all about balance and making sure you don’t get sucked too deeply into either work problems or family problems at any one time. When he is working then he is all in, but remembers to take breaks and go all into non-work relate responsibilities like taking his dog on a walk. Sandy is CEO of Zinn Sports Group, LLC, which he formed in February after 15 years at Major League Baseball and 10 years with ESPN. He most recently had 200 employees across North America and ran a $1 million+ budget. Born in Brooklyn, NY, Sandy grew up near the farms and beaches of Central New Jersey (yes, that's a thing) with a single mom and two sisters. After a year at Syracuse, he attended Rutgers University, earning a degree in Journalism & Mass Media after ditching accounting due to boredom. A mainstay at the campus radio station during the height of 'Mike & The Mad Dog,' Sandy too envisioned a future behind the mic, but his extremely mediocre demo tape got no traction and he settled for answering phones at ESPN for $7/hour. Sandy joined the editorial department at ESPN's wire service in NJ, SportsTicker, shortly thereafter and slid into globe-trotting roles of Olympics and Golf editor. He ran coverage from Sydney, Salt Lake City, several British Opens and many other remote events. Leaving ESPN in 2004, Sandy joined MLB in 2005 to help build the Minor League Stats department, running personnel and club relations. From there, he built and ran the day-to-operations of several industry-changing technologies and divisions, including Statcast, Pitch f/x, Automated Balls and Strikes, Umpire Evaluations, and more. Sandy plays an inordinate amount of softball during non-pandemic seasons and is a beach town resident. He is close to his family and extended group of friends abroad, and spends most of his time with his English Bulldog and best buddy Stanley.
