My guest today is a legendary British video game designer. While a student at Manchester University, a friend invited him to write a text adventure which led him to work for the video game publishers US Gold and, later, Activision. In 1990 he co-founded Revolution Software in the North of England. After releasing Lure of the Temptress and Beneath a Steel Sky, he began work on Broken Sword, a world-spanning adventure game starring the American patent lawyer, George Stobbart and his French girlfriend, Nicole Collard, a freelance journalist. The game had a witty script, was beautifully illustrated, and featured a soundtrack by Barrington Pheloung, the composer of the Inspector Morse TV series, who my guest first met over a game of cricket. After Sony reluctantly brought the game to PlayStation, it became a smash hit, leading to a string of successful sequels. But the course has not always been easy. “The audience for adventure games is limited,” he once told me. “But that audience is incredibly loyal.” Welcome, Charles Cecil MBE.Clips under discussion:Galaxian (Toshio Kai).Opening Theme (Peter McConnell, Michael Land and Clint Bajakian).Super Mario 64 Main Theme (Koji Kondo).Grand Theft Auto III Theme (Craig Conner).Thing 01 (Martin Stig Andersen). All other music by Simon Parkin. How diabolical would it be to orchestrate a child's birthday party just to be able to record a radio show with both hosts in the same room? Is it diabolical... or is it genius? Well you be the judge, dear listeners, as for this very episode our intrepid hosts are, in fact, IN THE SAME ROOM for the first time in three years!! And not 24 hours after they both turned down the "big one" of presenting Match of the Day! This week sees Annbot return and rap about Mario Kart, Sons of the Forest adds binoculars, someone shuts the Lemnis Gate and Charles Cecil is definitely going to E3*! Meanwhile we learn just how polite Ste is with AI, Simon judges Ste's gaming credentials and Alexa wants to break free... along with other news, letters and reviews. We also discuss going to GDC (we're off next week!) and the global phenomenon that is Maraoke - coming to a bar near you soon**! Chris O'Regan chats to Charles Cecil of Revolution Software about the design and development of their adventure game, Beyond a Steel Sky What drives us to play adventure games to their completion? Is it the world in which they are set? Is it the characters that inhabit said world? Is it the puzzles thrown at us to thwart our progress? Or is it to experience and participate in a great story? Marc Dalessio is a classically trained naturalistic painter who has established himself as one of the foremost landscape painters working today. He was recently described as the world’s best living Plein air painter by Eric Rhoads of Plein Air magazine. Born in 1972 in Los Angeles, California, Marc’s artistic training began at the University of California at Santa Cruz where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in Fine Art. He then moved to Florence, Italy and studied portraiture for four years with Charles Cecil at his atelier. After receiving a full scholarship at Cecil Studios, Marc taught portraiture and landscape painting at the school. He later taught landscape painting for the Florence Academy of Art. Marc currently resides in Estremoz, Portugal where he keeps a large studio with his wife and fellow artist, Tina Orsolic Dalessio. They travel to paint landscapes much of the year, and exhibit regularly in the US and in Europe.

Staying motivated in the games industry must sometimes be hard. Especially if you were an adventure game developer in the late 90s and being told that your beautifully hand-painted 2D game had to change into an ugly, polygonal mess before any publishers would so much as deign a glance in its direction. Charles Cecil livedContinue reading Season V, Episode 10: I Am Delighted to Say I Had Absolutely Nothing to Do With “Custer’s Revenge”
Next weekend, all three of us — Gareth, Frederik and myself — will be in London at Goldsmiths University, participating in this year’s AdventureX conference. There are very few developers that can boast about remaining in existence for 25 years and Revolution is one of them. Launched in 1991, the developer made its debut with Lure of the Temptress, a point and click adventure game that show host Chris O'Regan remembers very fondly playing on his Atari ST back in the dim and distant past. After all these years Chris finally meets one of the founders of Revolution in the form of Charles Cecil; a veteran of the video game development community he has been making games for over 35 years.Revolution are on the brink of releasing a collection of all of their games that they have released to date in a special collectors edition and Charles has agreed to appear on The Sausage Factory to talk about it. http://media.blubrry.com/caneandrinse/caneandrinse.com/sausage/TSF_Episode91.mp3 The Sausage Factory 91 was edited by Chris O'Regan

Talk by Charles Cecil MBE, video game designer (Broken Sword series) & Director of Revolution Software, at the Public and Popular History Seminar. Charles Cecil, video game industry legend and creator of the Broken Sword series discusses the uses of historical narratives in video games, and the link to different media like film. In fact, the video game industry has been a bigger industry than film for some years now, and millions of users have their most intensive encounters with representations of the past in front of a computer screen. Just what this means when historical narratives have to be moulded to fit the entertainment objectives of the video game producer is the subject of this multi-media talk by one of the most successful designers in the industry.
Joining me over Skype, Charles Cecil CEO of Revolution Software discusses the wonderful world of classic point and click adventure games, how the industry has changed and a glimpse of future titles including Broken Sword: The Serpent's Curse. Recently, Revolution Software successfully raised $771,560 to develop Broken Sword: The Serpent's Curse via a Kickstarter campaign, proving that this genre continues to thrive within the gaming community.
Infos zum Spiel: Thema: Baphomets Fluch Erscheinungsjahr: 1996 Genre: Adventure Plattform: MS-DOS, Windows (später jede Plattform von GBA bis iOS) Entwickler: Revolution Software Publisher: Virgin Interactive Ltd. We were lucky enough to catch up with Charles Cecil, founder of Revolution Software just days after the re-release of Beneath A Steel Sky on iPhone and iPod Touch. He tells MidLife Gamer that a new IP point and click adventure is still feasible in a modern market, and that he is aiming more for the 'casual market'. He argues that whilst core gamers will play casual games, casual gamers won't play core games, and that many casual gamers are yesterday's core gamers, very familiar with adventures of old. He admits though that the commercial model is different, 'we have to bring the price down'
We'll be honest because hey, we're 53 episodes in and we think we've known you long enough to trust you, to call you a friend: you almost didn't get to hear this episode. At 9.05pm on Tuesday the 6th November the OLL team found itself in Trouble and the sort of Trouble which gets a capital to distinguish it from the kind of trouble when Simon tricks Ann into saying rude words. Yes, this was Trouble: One Life Left's precious, intricately constructed show was fast disintegrating in the turbulent wake of the previous studio occupants. Who were still around. And didn't seem in any hurry to leave. Why wouldn't they leave? Why was the studio covered in lager and wires and coats and... tissues? Why were there tissues on the floor? It wasn't really The Team's fault, not this time, but it was six minutes, seven minutes, eight minutes past nine and things were going badly. Really badly. By nine minutes past they'd degenerated. Broken equipment, curious lights blinking on and off, level needles dancing as if posessed and headphones that didn't so much add clarity as obscure what little sound we were generating. Simon had already uttered the word we've heard too many times already, the word no-one wants to hear -- unbroadcastable -- but we were broadcasting, Oh God we were already broadcasting. The only thing to do? Take a breath, apologise to the live audience and reboot, reset, restart. You are listening to Resonance 104.4FM. It's... Just after ten past nine. And that means it's time for One Life Left.Wake up, wake up, podcast listners! It was all just a bad dream, those bad things never happened, those bad people were never here and this is One Life Left, rattled but reinvigorated. News, features, music, bad jokes and bickering. The results and restart of Ann Art. David McCarthy helpfully provides some instructions for would-be games reviewers. Derek, faithful Derek gives us his Firework Market Economy and there's a tribute poem to much-missed Craig 'The Rage' McClellan. Oh, and we get round to reviewing some videogames in an actual reviews section this week, although we're really mostly distracted by repeated attempts to Skype with Broken Sword creator Charles Cecil (we'll pick this up next week).Apologies once again to those who endured the first ten minutes live. If you were being extremely charitable you could called it 'Exclusive material' and claim it had been 'Released to dedicated live as a show of gratitude'. Actually it was doe-eyed terror reflected in the headlights of an SUV driven by the spirts of selfishness and incompetence. You almost didn't hear this episode. Still more apologies in advance to those of you who'll wish you hadn't. We'll be back to normal (?) in #54, except with one of the team missing for the first time in Season 3. Who? Tune in in a week to find out and enjoy their temporary replacement (though I wouldn't exactly recommend you listen live).Other things we need to say: Join our Facebook and help push us up past 200 users and beyond.Be so 2006 and friend us on Myspace (and look at our friends who are mostly chiptune music)Look out for Ann at the Sex Pistols press conferenceChat on the OLL forumEmail us, email us, email usLink us from other places if you can -- your journal, your blog, your favourite forumSubscribe to the podcast on iTunes or via the RSS feedOLL Christmas announcement coming soon...
