In Paul, Women & Wives, Dr. Craig S. Keener presents a substantive, Scripture-based defense for egalitarian theology, principles and practices. Join me as we explore the writings of Paul in a way that liberates women, not subjugates them. Check this out on Substack! Introduction “All biblical passages may be for all time, but all biblical passages are not for all circumstances.” - pg 59 This quote is tattoo-worthy. If you engage with the Christian Scripture for any of length of time, with any seriousness, this phrase should be a mantra you should repeat. This is especially true for pastors, elders, group leaders or anyone else who may be preaching and teaching the Jewish or Christian Scriptures. And it's extremely pertinent to our discussion. The most common accusation levied at egalitarians is that we have a “low view of Scripture” or are throwing out whole chunks of God's Word to arrive at our conclusion that women can serve in the church in the same capacities as men and aren't the only party called to submit in the home. For some, that is true. Part of their faith journey (especially those that are deconstructing or recovering from painful church experiences) is how they relate to the Bible. Especially if it was wielded like a weapon in their communities to harm them or control them. Sometimes, that experience leads folks to view Scripture with skepticism or completely disregard its authority in their life and belief system, while still clinging to faith in Jesus. I have nothing but grace and compassion for my brothers and sisters who feel that way. However, that's not my experience. In fact, it is in my authoritative view of Scripture that led to my egalitarian theology. And understanding this quote is big reason why, as Keener will lay out in further chapters. Verbal aspect in the Greek language has been a topic of significant debate in recent scholarship. The majority of scholars now believe that an understanding of verbal aspect is even more important than verb tense (past, present, etc.). Yet there still are no alternative accessible textbooks, both in terms of level and price. In the second edition, Constantine R. Campbell investigates the function of verbal aspect within the New Testament Greek narrative in light of the last fifteen years of the latest scholarship.  In Basics of Verbal Aspect in Biblical Greek, Second Edition, Campbell has done a marvelous job in this book of simplifying the concept without getting caught up using terms of linguistics that only experts can understand. The book includes expanded and updated discussion, revised exercises, an answer key, a glossary of key concepts, an appendix covering space and time, and an index of Scriptures cited. Professors and students, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, will use this is as a supplemental text in both beginning and advanced Greek courses. Pastors that study the Greek text will also appreciate this resource as a supplement to their preaching and teaching. Constantine Campbell is Professor and Research Director at the Sydney College of Divinity, and previously served as Professor of New Testament studies at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Chicago and Moore Theological College in Sydney. His first doctorate is in ancient Greek language and linguistics (Macquarie University, 2007). Campbell is the author of 19 books, with focus on ancient Greek, New Testament interpretation, and the apostle Paul. His book Paul and Union with Christ was the 2014 Christianity Today Book of the Year in Biblical Studies. His latest releases are Reading Paul as Christian Scripture (Baker Academic, 2024) and Basics of Verbal Aspect in Biblical Greek, second edition (Zondervan Academic, 2024). Campbell was co-chair of the Biblical Greek Language and Linguistics section of the Society of Biblical Literature, and is an Associate Editor of the Zondervan Exegetical Commentary series. He is an elected member of the preeminent scholarly guild, Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas. Campbell is also a highly regarded jazz saxophonist and is a visiting instructor at The Australian National University School of Music. His second doctorate explores the fusion of jazz and traditional Greek urban music (Australian National University, 2024). He is the presenter of two documentary series on the apostles Paul and Peter. Campbell lives in Canberra, Australia. Jonathon Lookadoo is Associate Professor at the Presbyterian University and Theological Seminary in Seoul, South Korea. While his interests range widely over the world of early Christianity, he is the author of books on the Epistle of Barnabas, Ignatius of Antioch, and the Shepherd of Hermas, including The Christology of Ignatius of Antioch (Cascade, 2023). How would a medieval Sufi Muslim view the Jewish and Christian scriptures? In this episode, we explore this question through the teachings of Abd al-Karim al-Jili. Born on the Malabar coast of India in 1365, Jili studied throughout the Middle East before settling in the town of Zabid in Yemen. It was there that he wrote his most famous work, al-Insan al-Kamil fi Ma‘rifat al-Awakhir wa-al-Awa'il (The Perfect Human in the Knowledge of the Last and First Things).  In that book, Jili drew on the terminology of the Quran and the Sufi teachings of Ibn Arabi to summarize his vision of the relationship between God and humanity. Consequently, he was centrally concerned with scriptural revelation: how God reveals Himself to humankind through the holy books. This led Jili to write a mystical comparison of the Quran with the Hebrew Bible and New Testament (known in Arabic as the Tawrah and the Injil). Nile Green talks to Fitzroy Morrissey, the author of Sufism and the Scriptures: Metaphysics and Sacred History in the Thought of ‘Abd al-Karim al-Jili (I.B. Tauris, 2021).

Esau McCaulley (PhD, St. Andrews University) joins David Capes on the Stone Chapel Podcast to discuss his upcoming lecture at the Lanier Theological Library, October 12, 2024. His title is “The Gospels and the Anti-Slavery Movement.” Many scholars and critics of the Bible conclude that the proper reading of the Christian Scripture promotes slavery and is thus immoral. Indeed, the best cases made from the Bible during the anti-slavery movement were on the side of the slave owners and defenders. Esau McCaulley challenges that conclusion; he says the best readings of Scripture were on the side of the abolitionists. In this lecture McCaulley will show how the life and teachings of Jesus ultimately undermine one of humanity's oldest and gravest sins. Today, I want to invite you into the lawyer's office. But don't worry! You're not in trouble – in fact, quite the opposite! This is the office of a lawyer who determines the rightful heirs to an estate. This lawyer's job is to follow the mandates of a written will, and to distribute the rightful inheritance of the estate to the legal heirs named in that will. Now in this metaphor, we can consider the Bible to be “The Will of God” – and for this episode, I have woven together a few significant teachings from the Christian Scriptures to provide a basic but powerful “will” for us to understand...

The phrase “Word of God” is used a lot by Christians. I hear it in church every Sunday. When Christians talk about the Word of God, they are usually referring to the Christian scriptures. In this episode today I am proposing another way of understanding the term – a more inclusive use of the term, which also happens to be the Biblical way of understanding the phrase. Biblically speaking the Word of God is not limited to a book. We can say the Bible is the Word of God, but it does not exhaust the Word of God. Also it is important to note that the Christian Scriptures – the New Testament - is not called the Word of God in the Bible. So what exactly is the Word of God? In the Bible the phrase refers to God speaking. It is the living Presence and Power of the Divine speaking to us from the depths of the Spirit. It is otherwise known as Nondual Reality, which can be known directly but expressed only imperfectly in words.

There's a saying that “people who talk to God are religious, but people who hear from God are certifiably insane.” And yet, the idea that God is trying to communicate with human beings is actually a central assumption of the Christian story and the Christian Scriptures. Jay Kim and Steve Clifford stop by to share their wisdom and thoughts about what it means for us to be a people who earnestly desire to WANT to hear from God. How might a thematic analysis of Jeremiah, particularly the theme of the faithless bride, help pastors better serve their churches? What can Christians learn about the futility and dangers of sin by studying the Book of Jeremiah, and how might this theme of the faithless bride lead us to a deeper appreciation of Jesus Christ?Jeremiah's confrontation with Israel over their faithlessness is still valuable for those who confront sin today when we consider two key realities about sin. First, sin is irrational. It is utter madness to try to slake one's thirst with the grime at the bottom of a cistern when you can drink from a clear, pure spring. Second, sin's power is broken when we are disgusted by it. We must understand that what seems so attractive about sin is actually hideously ugly. Yes, Jeremiah is about Israel and Judah, but it is also about us.As ministers of the gospel, pastors must gravely and potently confront sin and get people to see its abhorrence and the hopelessness that it drives us to before they can show and speak of the true hope that we have in Jesus Christ. And yet, here's this lingering question: how can we ever arrive here? How can we ever arrive at this knowledge of our sin when Jeremiah so emphasizes the power of self-deception and delusion? As the rest of Jeremiah will show, the new covenant will have the power to pierce our self-deception and engender true conviction in our hearts, and only by the power of God's initiative through Jesus Christ will the Faithless bride once again become a faithful wife and love her husband in her heart of hearts.Today's Greystone Conversations episode is taken from a recent Greystone Module, Jeremiah as Christian Scripture. In his new book, theologian Matthew Thomas takes on the big question of what the Apostle Paul means when he talks about "Works of the Law" -- as opposed to Grace -- in terms of Justification, addressing a long-standing debate between biblical scholars and using second-century sources to adjudicate the question. The stakes of the faithful, and what it means to be a Christian for the first-century Jews who founded the religion, could not be higher, especially when St. Peter slid back into the observation of Mosaic custom. Matthew J Hart and Daniel J Hill's book Does God Intend that Sin Occur? (Palgrave Macmillan, 2022) argues, from a detailed consideration of the Christian Scriptures, that God intends that sin occur. It swims against the tide of current thinking in philosophy of religion, arguing for an unfashionable conclusion. The book begins by considering the history of views on the question, paying particular attention to the Reformed or Calvinistic tradition. The heart of the book is a detailed examination of key passages from the Christian Scriptures that, it is argued, show that God does intend that sin occur. It also discusses in detail two alternative views that could be used to reinterpret these texts, one view that God intends only that the substratum of the sinful action occur, not the sin itself, and the other that God acts because a sin will occur but not intending that that sin occur. The book argues that these interpretative strategies, even when combined together, do not produce a plausible interpretation of the texts adduced. Author and editor Chris Hayes joins the podcast to talk about his latest book, " God and Guns: The Bible Against American Gun Culture."Using the Bible as the foundational source and guide, while also bringing contemporary sociological data to the conversation, seven biblical scholars and theologians construct a powerful dialogue about gun violence in America, concluding that guns are incompatible with the God of Christian Scripture. God and Guns is the first book to argue against gun culture from a biblical studies perspective. Bringing the Bible into conversation with contemporary sociological data, the volume breaks new exegetical and critical ground and lays the foundations for further theological work. The scholars assembled in this volume construct a powerful argument against gun violence, concluding that a self-identity based on guns is incompatible with Christian identity. Drawing on their expertise in the Bible's ancient origins and modern usage, they present striking new insights involving psychology, ethics, race, gender, and culture. This collection, carefully edited for clarity and readability, will change conversations—and our culture.Contributors include T. M.
