As a boy, I was hockey obsessed and growing up in Goderich meant I had access every year to the grand-daddy of all hockey tournaments. Young Canada Week began in 1950 as a one-day, 12-team competition for peewee age players and over the years it grew into an exciting and important part of the fabric of Goderich and area. It would go on to draw players like: Paul Henderson, Darryl Sittler, Brad Park, Ron Ellis, Goderich's own Larry Jeffrey and Gary Doak and yes, Wayne Gretzky ... and many more. On this episode, Lion's Club member, former teacher & coach Richard Madge will join us along with one of my oldest friends, Rob Bundy to chat about the tourney's humble beginnings, it's rise to become one of the most famous tournaments in the world, the push to stay relevant in an ever changing world and some of our own special memories and brushes with hockey fame.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have not won the Stanley Cup since 1967. The reason? Two words: Harold Ballard. The curmudgeonly owner ruined the team in the '70s and '80s with a tight-fisted reign of error that played out almost daily in that era's sports pages. The man who caused Leaf's captain Darryl Sittler to rip the "C" off his jersey and who lived in his arena, Maple Leaf Gardens, finally gets the documentary he deserves. It is all thanks to this episode's podcast guests: executive producer Michael Geddes (Lone Eagle Entertainment) and Jason Priestley, who produces, directs and narrates. Listen as the two tell how they met to develop a scripted series before realizing they better do the doc first. Priestley tells of interviewing many of his hockey heroes, including Sittler, Lanny McDonald, Wendel Clark, Tiger Williams,  Rick Vaive and other players of the day. Don Cherry, Allan Eagleson and sportswriters such as Mary Ormsby, Allen Able and Stephen Brunt also weigh in on the tumultuous Ballard years.Don't wait for Leafs to win another a Stanley Cup. After the opening game, a 5-4 OT win, we asked Darryl his opinion of this new team. Also we found out if he was excited about the Canadian Division. Darryl, the most popular player in Toronto Maple Leafs history, captured the imagination of hockey fans everywhere. In his 15-year NHL career, he scored 484 goals, 637 assists, and 1,121 points in the regular season. And although he scored another 29 goals in the playoffs, his most famous tally came in overtime against Czechoslovakia to win the Canada Cup in 1976. Darryl is tied to two of the best remembered and most remarkable performances in NHL history, etched into record books and memories alike, making him part of Canadian hockey lore. The first was a 10-point game on February 7, 1976, against Don Cherry and his powerful Boston Bruins. The second was a five-goal playoff game against Philadelphia's Bernie Parent and the Broad Street Bullies.

In 1976, no one picked the Toronto Maple Leafs to beat the back-to-back Stanley Cup-winning Philadelphia Flyers in the 2nd round of the playoffs. Leafs coach Red Kelly knew that, to best the 'Broad Street Bullies,' he'd need more than superior strategy. He'd need an ace in the hole: a twelve foot pyramid in the middle of his locker room. Whether he truly believed in the power of pyramids of not, he was willing to do anything. And in the mysticism-friendly 1970s, the power of pyramids almost inspired his troops to greatness. The world of this week's story seems a million miles away from today's NHL. The brand of hockey the Broad Street Buddies introduced to the league soon went the way of the Dodo. The league changed its rule book, introducing penalties for instigation and limiting the potential for bench-clearing. Then, the Scotty Bowman-coached Montreal Canadiens ascended to dominance, ending Philadelphia's supremacy. With the likes of Guy Lafleur, Ken Dryden, Yvan Cournoyer and Larry Robinson, the 70s Canadiens embodied hockey purists' idea of 'the best of the game.' Even Leafs fan had to tip their hats to the Habs' four straight Cup wins. Kate Smith's talismanic potency came to a gradual end around the same time the Flyers' supremacy ended. She couldn't help Philly beat Montreal, and her record fell of considerably after that. In 1987, the team erected a statue of Smith outside The Spectrum. The statue was transported to what is now the Wells Fargo Center when the team moved. But in 2019, controversy around racist sentiment in Smith's 1931 recordings led to the end of her use in sports matches in Philadelphia and elsewhere. The statue was torn down and permanently removed. No one in Philly talks about Kate much anymore. As for Red, after he was fired by Harold Ballard in 1977, he never coached in the NHL again. Instead, he went into business, working as a director on the board of Computer Aircraft Maintenance Programs (CAMP), a company owned by his wife Andra's family. CAMP is where Red would work alongside his daughter, Casey. It's where she got a front row seat to her father's leadership style. And where their relationship transcended that of father-daughter. Nowadays, few talk much about Red's time behind the bench. He is remembered more for his exploits as a player - and rightly so. That is where he truly achieved greatness. But for those Leafs fan who followed the team in the 1970s, the mere mention of 'Pyramid Power' still evokes the hopes and hilarious hi-jinks of the era. CREDITS: Leafs Forever is hosted by Scott Willats & written by Paul Matthews. “I'm grateful for the fact that I can look back at my life and I can honestly say I don't really have any regrets. If I died tomorrow, I tried to live it the best I could and having said that, still young and healthy and lots to look forward to.” – Darryl Sittler Few players in Toronto Maple Leafs history captured the imagination of hockey fans, and a place in their hearts, like number 27, Darryl Sittler. The former centre man and Captain of the Maple Leafs was born third in a family of eight children in Kingston Ontario, played his junior hockey career with the London Knights and went on to be Toronto's first choice in the 1970 Amateur Draft. Darryl embarked on a career that led him to the top of the Leafs All-Time Points and Goal Scoring List and he secured his place among the NHL's all-time greats in 1989 with his induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame. He finished his career with 484 goals and 1121 points. He set an NHL single-game record that still stands by getting 10 points (six goals, four assists) in a game against the Boston Bruins in 1976. On February 8, 2003, in a touching tribute to an illustrious career, with his three grown children at his side, Darryl Sittler was honoured at a Toronto home game against the Montreal Canadiens as his banner was raised to the rafters of the Air Canada Centre. The banner not only bore his name and jersey number but as a tribute to his late wife Wendy who had died of colon cancer in 2001, hers too was inscribed. In his post-hockey career, Darryl kept his entrepreneurial spirit lit with business endeavours fueled by his long-standing philosophy to learn, prepare and work hard. He is an active Member of the Board of Directors of several publicly listed mineral exploration companies, a founding Co-Chair for ‘Have a Heart for Downs Syndrome' (HHDS) and is very supportive of several charities including Special Olympics Canada, Screen Colons Canada and Colorectal Cancer Canada. Darryl also spends time working with Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment Inc. in areas of Corporate Partners and in community relations. In Darryl's lifetime pursuit of good health and longevity he stays active by training, bike riding, fishing and playing golf. Together with his wife Luba, Darryl has a full family life and enjoys spending time with his children, his grandchildren as well as his friends.    Show Notes [02:07] Patrick introduces his next guest who needs little introduction for hockey fans: Darryl Sittler [04:00] Darryl and Patrick drop the puck and get underway. [04:38] After retiring from his first career in hockey, Darryl talks about the variety of things he tried, studied and undertook in his second act and how he decided on the things that were right for him. [07:38] The importance of preparation and work ethic is a philosophy Darryl adopted early which served his goal of playing in the NHL and continued to serve him in the projects he undertook post-NHL. [10:05] Darryl shares his background and experiences to provide insight into where his entrepreneurial mindset and strong work ethic originated. [14:58] Darryl's love for the game of hockey was his number one motivator to immerse himself in the sport, keep practicing and working at it every day. [17:00] Identity shift: Darryl articulates his feelings of playing NHL level hockey, the ups and downs, comraderies, spontaneity and adrenaline, and then how he managed the shift after retiring. Long-term thinking, setting goals and engaging in alternative activities all kept (and keeps) his energy lit. [21:15] Two essential attributes that Darryl learned both as a kid and coming up in the NHL: respect and humility. [24:34] In keeping with humility, Darryl recounts a moving story of meeting Terry Fox, the everlasting impact it has had on him, and the opportunity we all have to make a difference. Big or small it all matters. [29:26] Darryl's talks about his boundaries and commitment when his integrity is tested.
