Last week saw the delayed opening of THE ENFIELD HAUNTING, a brand new play based on the real-life 1970s poltergeist frenzy. The play stars Catherine Tate and David Threlfall at the Ambassador's Theatre in the West End. This opening was unfortunately notable for many of the wrong reasons as most of the reviews were very negative - consequentially Mickey-Jo booked a ticket straight away and headed to the following day's matinee performance motivated almost exclusively by morbid curiosity. In this roundup Mickey-Jo shares his thoughts of the play whilst rounding up the opinions of some of London's major critical publications and outlets. Stay tuned to find out who really hated this play, and why... • About Mickey-Jo: As one of the leading voices in theatre criticism on a social platform, Mickey-Jo is pioneering a new medium for a dwindling field. His YouTube channel: MickeyJoTheatre is the largest worldwide in terms of dedicated theatre criticism, where he also share features, news and interviews as well as lifestyle content for over 60,000 subscribers. Since establishing himself as a theatre critic he has been able to work internationally. With a viewership that is largely split between the US and the UK he has been fortunate enough to be able to work with PR, Marketing, and Social Media representatives for shows both in New York, London, Hamburg, and Paris. He has also twice received accreditation from the world renowned Edinburgh Fringe Festival. His reviews and features have also been published by WhatsOnStage, for whom he was a panelist to help curate nominees for their 2023 and 2024 Awards as well as BroadwayWorldUK and LondonTheatre.co.uk. The boys get a rare insight into a professional sporting environment this week, as they sit down with club representatives from Huddersfield Town FC to talk about the impact restructuring their Academy set up in 2018 has had. Since the restructuring - going from a Category 2 Academy to a Category 4 - the club have not done much by way of media to provide context to how things are going lower down, thanks largely to a Premier League relegation and Championship struggles for the First Team. Communications Director, David Threlfall-Sykes and Academy Manager Emyr Humphreys were able to provide an incredible, first-hand and honest account of what's been going on. We talk; reducing the number of teams, bespoke fixture lists, player recruitment, pathways to the first team, attractiveness of the club, a through-club playing identity, investment and much more. It's a fascinating listen and an incredible insight into the changes made in elite sport - a huge thanks to David, Emyr and the club for their time, expertise, context and insight. The boys then offer a quick opinion on Gareth Southgate's latest England squad for the upcoming opening World Cup Qualifiers. We discuss who is unlucky to miss out, who is lucky to be there and who has a lot to prove in advance of the Euros in the Summer. We close with a prediction for the opening qualifier against San Marino - the worst ranked International team in the World. Enjoy the listen. Trust the Process. What's Next? Primark have made huge profits and are taking a bit of stick from our army of do-gooders…they are suggesting people boycott the store because the stuff they sell is made in China by workers who are poor and mistreated…..the stuff they sell in the store is CHEAP !!!....that’s all 99% of shoppers are interested in I’m afraid. My take on this is if Primark can sell cheap so can the big stores…end of. ...I went to see “Dreamboats and Petticoats” on the Floral Pavilion in New Brighton….it was sort of O.K….but not worth 28 quid a ticket….the music which is live was good but the acting let it down…I’ve seen the show before on the Empire which was much better…shame. ...I watched a drama about Tommy Cooper on tele this week (did you catch it?) it was brilliant…the guy who played him was great (David Threlfall?...who was the star of “Shameless” which I never watched)…it was a great insight into the life of T.C. (I was never a fan)…I think the guy will get an award for this…it was excellent. ...I was listening to Boney M on the radio the other day and was reminded how good their records were … great bass player and drummer on the records….the song was “Rasputin” …it took me back to an interview on BBC with one of the girls in the band who said SHE was the only singer on the discs….the dancing fool in the middle couldn’t even sing…his voice was actually the managers voice….another great pop revelation…which reminded me of a guy called Tony Burrows who kidded them all…he was in the original Brotherhood of Man before the Eurovision lot took over the name…he was also the singer in White Plains,Eddison Lighthouse AND The Pipkins…..who all got in the charts at the same time…and appeared on Top Of The Pops…..so the secret was out and he got a ban from the Beeb…classic stuff. ......I am back playing golf and of late the courses have been virtually empty…this is over the last six months…I also have a mate who lives near the Royal Liverpool who will be hosting The Open this year…and he intends to rent his flat out (you can get 10 grand for the 5 days)…but up to now he has had no takers…he has two estate agents on the job and had had to bring the price down….could it be that golf is fading in popularity?...the same thing happened with squash when I used to play in the 70s….interesting.

This week Libby Purves is joined by David M Lutken, Lee Mack, David Threlfall and Janet Street-Porter. David M Lutken is an American actor and writer. He is the co-writer (with Nick Corley) and the star of a new musical, 'Woody Sez', about Woody Guthrie, who according to The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was "the original folk hero; a man who, in the Thirties and Forties, transformed the folk ballad into a vehicle for social protest and observation, and paved the way for the likes of Bob Dylan". 'Woody Sez - the Life and Music of Woody Guthrie' is at the Arts Theatre, London. Lee Mack is a writer and comedian who has established himself as one of the UK's biggest comedy stars. The last twelve months alone have seen him extend his 2010 national tour 'Going Out' twice, return as resident team captain on TV's 'Would I Lie To You?' and he now returns to BBC One with the award-winning sitcom 'Not Going Out' for a fourth series. David Threlfall is the acclaimed actor probably best known for playing Frank, the head of the Gallagher clan, in the critically acclaimed Channel Four drama Shameless, created by Paul Abbott. Set on Manchester's Chatsworth estate, it charts the rollercoaster lives and loves of the dysfunctional Gallagher family. An 8th series of 'Shameless' is on Channel Four. Janet Street-Porter is the writer and journalist, former editor of the Independent on Sunday and TV executive, who has had a successful career in the media spanning nearly forty years. In her latest book Don't Let the B*****ds Get You Down (published by Quadrille), she gives her advice on everything from how to survive in the recession and how to cut the crap and live life by your own rules.
