Joined today by New York Times bestselling author Erik Larson. Erik and I recorded at Legends in NYC and talk about the status of “Devil in the White City” being produced into a HULU original after the rights were purchased by Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese. We talk about the behind the scenes of writing a book, how he knows it's finished, if he feels pressure or relief when the final draft is submitted and what he does with his thousands of pages of notes. Erik's latest release, “The Splendid and The Vile” debuted during the beginning of the pandemic, and we talk about being on tour when the lockdowns began. We change course and talk about our love of tennis, the US Open and the current state of men's and women's tennis. Erik shares how 9/11 influenced him to write “The Splendid and The Vile”, why this book about Churchill is different than the others, and why Mary Churchill's daughter decided to give Erik Larson the diary which was the missing piece to his book. We talk about if social media could have impacted Roosevelt and Churchill's actions during that tumultuous time, how Londoners reacted to 57 days of bombings and how Churchill went from being compared to the Third Reich to having an 88% approval rating. From trying to get an invite to his famous marathon brunch to shows he watched during the quarantine. All this and more with one of the most popular and influential writers of our generation. Welcome to the seventh episode of Wild Society! This week we cover the man known as “America’s first serial killer”, H.H. Holmes. A medical school graduate, swindler and ladies man, H.H. Holmes ruled the dark side of Chicago during the time of the World’s Fair. Building what would become known as the “murder castle”, Holmes’ morbid obsession with anatomy and chemistry took a dark turn in late 19th century Chicago. Or, are all of the tales we’ve come to know as fact just sensationalized stories? In part two of this episode we learn about the Lake Michigan Triangle, also known as the Michigan Triangle. It has accounted for numerous mysterious events, beginning in 1891. Ships, people and even the nation's once largest commercial airline disaster have all occurred in the Triangle, which spans from Manitowoc, Wisconsin, to Ludington, Michigan, and south to Benton Harbor, Michigan. Chad talks about the mystery and what's possibly to blame.Leave a rating or review!H.H. Holmes Sources:H.H. Holmes: The True History of the White City Devil by Adam SelzerMysterious ChicagoH.H. How To Lead In Times Of Crisis: Erik Larson is the author of six New York Times bestselling books including "The Devil In The White City" a National Book Award finalist. His new book, "The Splendid & The Vile" ranks #1 on both the NY Times & Wall Street Journal bestseller lists. "The Splendid & The Vile" focuses on Winston Churchill’s first year as England’s Prime Minister (80 years ago), "the year in which Churchill became Churchill, the cigar-smoking bulldog we all know, when he made all of his famous speeches & showed the world what courage & leadership look like.” And by demonstrating extraordinary courage, hope, candor, optimism & inspiration (all qualities of the heart), Winston Churchill not only earned a spot as one of the most renowned leaders of all-time, he stands as the greatest leader ever in a time of crisis. And at a time of our own 21st Century crisis, when leaders around the world are seeking guidance on how to act, Erik Larson couldn’t be a more timely or informed voice. A masterful storyteller, he assures us that were we to adopt the leadership practices that made Churchill great, we ourselves can be great as well.

Noir novelist and Radio Free Dystopia co-host Toby Ball is back -- and may never come on the pod again after Sarah D. Bunting subjected him to American Ripper and H.H. Holmes: America's First Serial Killer. Is Holmes just too tough a subject for documentaries to cover effectively? Did the creators miss opportunities to explore new angles on The Devil In The White City's already well-told tale? And why must Ripperologist crackpots insist that famous people are also "Saucy Jacky"? All this and much laughing at wretched re-enactments on the latest TBP. Learn more about your ad choices. Devil In The White City author Erik Larson helps us write gooder, and we tell you how to snack silently at the movies.
H.H. Holmes. Chicago, Illinois. Some murder to satisfy dark urges. Others kill out of passion. In the late 1800's, one man may have murdered for profit. Setting up shop in Chicago, Herman Webster Mudgett purchased a drug store and was said to have built a hotel in anticipation of The World's Fair. Much of his time was spent committing fraud, but people around him were constantly disappearing. Eventually, this would lead to his capture. Once his building was investigated, it was indeed found to contain trap doors, hidden rooms, & secret passages. People speculated on what the man now known as H.H. Holmes was up to for all those years. Is Erik Larson's book, The Devil In The White City, as well as the upcoming Martin Scorsese film of the same title, an accurate account? Was H.H. Holmes also Jack the Ripper? Mysterious Chicago's Adam Selzer joined us to to discuss this dangerous swindler and to separate fact from fiction.
Erik Larson, who brings history to life in his nonfiction, discusses how he documents his own life, how he makes his own luck, and where he'd go if he had a TARDIS. Plus, how the bicycle informed feminism and some transatlantic homework.
