Moderator: Dr. Durre Nayab, Joint Director PIDE Book Author: Dr. Anita M. Weiss Discussants Raza Rumi, Policy analyst Saba Gul Khattak, Political scientist Yaqoob Khan Bangash, Historian This book identifies and analyzes the impact of the various ways in which local people are responding, taking stands, recapturing their culture, and saying ‘stop’ to the violent extremism that has manifested over the past decade (even longer) in Pakistan. Local groups throughout Pakistan are engaging in various kinds of social negotiations and actions to lessen the violence that has plagued the country since the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan which let loose a barrage of violence that overflowed into its borders. In so many ways, Pakistanis are engaging in powerful actions that transform how people think about their own society, impeding extremists’ rants while acting on ‘envisioning alternative futures’. This book, hence, focuses on finding the sparks of hope that local people are creating to counter violent extremism based on close ethnographic study of ground realities about not only what people are doing but why they are selecting these kinds of actions, how they are creating alternative narratives about culture and identity, and their vision of a future without violence. This book is also designed to celebrate what is flourishing in cultural performances, music, social activism, and the like in Pakistan today because of people’s commitment to take stands against extremism. Biodata Professor Weiss received her doctorate in sociology from UC Berkeley and is professor of International Studies at the University of Oregon, where she has taught since 1988. She has published extensively on social development, gender issues, and political Islam in Pakistan. She was in Pakistan extensively between 2016-19 conducting interviews for this new book, including six months on a Harry Frank Guggenheim research fellowship; Professor Weiss stepped down after seven years as Head of the Department of International Studies to conduct this research in Pakistan. She is a member of the editorial board of Globalizations as well as a number of journals from Pakistan, has been a member of the Research Advisory Board of the Pakistan National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW), and has been Treasurer and Vice President of the American Institute of Pakistan Studies. She was a Distinguished Speaker at the PSDE Annual Meeting in 2002. Endorsements for book Anita Weiss, a prolific expert on Pakistan for some 40 years, has written a “must read” groundbreaking book on the role of religion and the exponential increase of religious extremism in Pakistan. Based on exhaustive on-the-ground research, she provides a unique window on how and why people have responded to and what they have done and are they doing to stop the spread of violent extremism. (JOHN ESPOSITO, Professor, Religion & International Affairs and Islamic Studies, Georgetown University; Founding Director, Prince Alwaleed Center for Muslim–Christian Understanding, Georgetown) Anita Weiss brings to the fore the voices of Pakistanis who have long struggled to counter extremism, intolerance, and terrorism in all its forms. Going beyond the urban areas, she has located people and organizations in smaller cities, towns, and rural areas, where change is happening daily. The diversity of approaches of these change makers is exhilarating: from the non-violence of Bacha Khan to the science focus of the Zoya schools, the stirring and resilient emerging Pashto and Sindhi poetry, to the urban initiatives in art for peace and open spaces. Making a strong case for a hopeful and forward-looking Pakistan, Weiss has certainly opened an important avenue of study. (YAQOOB KHAN BANGASH, Director, Centre for Governance and Policy, ITU, Lahore; Founder, Afkar-e-Taza ThinkFest, Pakistan)

Most of it happened ten years ago when people thought this [silver] was nonsense. Names and labels people would throw at me. When I went to Africa and I helped treat children that were dying from Malaria, everything seemed to change. Here's how: I was bullied into the idea that I had this wonderful job with one of the world's biggest pharmaceutical companies and we were working on drugs and research and everything was wonderful. I was on the chemotherapy board and at a presentation, I discovered that they only have a six percent success rate of healing people with cancer when they use chemotherapy. Social Theory Fall Distinguished Speaker: Ann Stoler by A&S faculty, staff, students, and guests
Show host Janus Adams delivers the annual Distinguished Speaker Series lecture before a live audience at her undergraduate alma mater, the State University of New York at New Paltz. Her topic: "Know When To Leave The Plantation," As a student, Janus sought solace from the pressures of a segregated society in walks to Huguenot Street in historic New Paltz, New York. With the North in denial of its slavery ties, little did she know she'd been following in the footsteps of Sojourner Truth. Then, in one telling incident, she was made aware of the vestiges of slavery and the suppression of women's rights driving American society. Inspired by passions nurtured at the school and informed by scholarly work on the Underground Railroad, her speech mines the wisdom of the UGRR; extracting its power to rescue freedom-seekers to this day. Adams is introduced by Dr. Donald Christian, President of SUNY New Paltz.

The concept of artistic research has sparked a lot of controversy over the last two decades, and it still is a matter of some dispute. Although the term ‘research’ pertaining to art does not provoke anymore, it seems to be still unclear how this term should be understood in relation to science. If we, however, look at the epistemological impact of art, it seems strange that artistic research should be controversial at all: the affiliation between art and sensual knowledge is as old as the very concept of "aesthetics", coined by Alexander Baumgarten in the 18th century. Georg Friedrich Hegel, Theodor W. Adorno, or Martin Heidegger, to name but a few, all assumed a strong interconnection between Art and Truth. Maurice Merleau-Ponty considered Paul Cézanne's painting to be a kind of “research”, and thought that painters were engaged in a kind of “mute ‘thinking’”. The question of the precise relationship between art, knowledge, and truth, however, has not yet been exhaustively explored. Neither has the question of what artistic thinking really is: sometimes the artistic concept of truth remains vague - and sometimes we do not understand how notions such as truth or thinking might be at all applicable to art practices. The lecture tries to answer these questions in a new way, by investigating how and in which sense art in itself carries epistemological meaning, or can serve as a medium for a type of cognition that cannot be expressed otherwise.
Today's show is a little different than they typical episode. On September 30th, 2017, the New Hampshire Association for Behavior Analysis will be hosting its 3rd annual conference (tickets are available here). In order to promote this event, and more generally, highlight the great work that NH ABA does, I put together a sequence of five mini-interviews with all of the conference speakers. This year's line-up is great. We will feature a Keynote address from Dr. Greg Hanley, and a closing Distinguished Speaker presentation from Dr. Mark Sundberg. Between these talks, we'll hear from Dr. Derek Reed, Caitlin Kirkwood, and Michael Miklos. In this episode, you'll hear about what they will talk about, but you can also click here to access the conference brochure. The conference is a fantastic value. The early-bird price of $99 gets you 6.5 CEU's, a buffet lunch (yes, there is a free lunch), and opportunities to meet and network with fellow behavior analysts. The early bird price is available through August 31st, but if I had to guess, the event is going to sell out prior to that. As such, if you're considering attending, I recommend picking up your tickets right away. Click here to access the online portal to make that happen. In this episode, I've asked each speaker to recommend readings, websites, and other resources to check out. Here are those references in the approximate order in which they are mentioned in the episode. DISTINGUISHED SPEAKER : CORNELIA SOLLFRANKIn her lecture, German artist Cornelia Sollfrank will give an introduction to the concept of the commons, however, putting an emphasis on digital commons. In the center of her investigations is the question of what artists can contribute to digital commons. The lecture will introduce Sollfrank’s ongoing research on art and commons and discuss specific artworks as examples. Each of the works addresses specific questions and embodies experimental and fragmentary solutions to the questions posed by neoliberal enclosures.
Since the early 1990s’ Arahmaiani has been developing a research-creation process in various contexts, questioning the physical uniqueness and commodification of the art work. Her performances invite the audience to rethink sensoriality and movement through the creation of collective art maneuvers. The different approaches proposed in Arahmaiani’s workshops, classes and community projects, most of which take place in Asia and in Europe, involve the creation of structural spaces for the collectivity in the spirit of citizen-run collective projects.
Human history details our transition from groups of hunter-gatherers to communities centered on organized agriculture and the introduction and nurturing of unprecedented varieties plants and animals. Agriculture allowed early civilizations to foster art, religion and literature replete with myths and legends about special powers of transformation allowing one kind of living material to become another or, of transformations of inanimate into animate materials and vice versa.
What is the perfect meal? We can probably all think of at least one especially memorable dinner. For some, it might be something as simple as a picnic in a meadow or fish & chips by the seaside. For others, it will be that once in a lifetime trip to one of the world’s top Michelin-starred restaurants. Wherever it was, what made it so special wasn’t just the food. In this talk, I will argue that what makes for a great eating experience depends far more on the ‘everything else’ that surrounds the meal than many of us realize: It depends on everything from the mood we are in through to the company we keep, and from the sensory environment in which we eat and imbibe through to the plating, plateware, and cutlery.
Krzysztof Wodiczko’s conference will address themes from his recent projects, among them war, conflict, trauma, injustice and social displacement through the use of projections and other media based interventions. Wodiczko’s public projections give life to monuments and public buildings using images of expressive physical movement, paired with the voices of marginalized citizens: the homeless, immigrants, survivors of domestic violence, war veterans.

It's our Halloween show! With Victorian and Gothic influence in a number of the Sherlock Holmes stories, the Canon can be great fodder for the mysterious, occult and spooky elements of Halloween. Certainly The Hound of the Baskervilles, "The Adventure of the Devil's Foot," "The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier," or "The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place" have elements that can make a reader's hair stand on end.But the most direct link with Halloween as we know it today (other than Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "" - the original mummy story) has to be "The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire." Sherlock Holmes himself was a bit dismissive of the supernatural in this case, saying "Rubbish, Watson, rubbish! What have we to do with walking corpses who can only be held in their grave by stakes driven through their hearts? It's pure lunacy."But our guest on this episode, Les Klinger (a guest on Episodes and , when he spoke about the Guy Ritchie / Robert Downey, Jr. movies and his role as Warner Brothers' consultant on the set) is no stranger to Dracula. He has written and has been an influential in the Dracularian movement. As we discuss the intersection of Holmes and Dracula, Les helps us understand the evolution of vampire literature and Dracula-influenced media. In the discussion, Les alludes to other influential fictional works in the movement such as , , and by Kim Newman, who is the Distinguished Speaker at the. In addition to the popular work, Les noted that there is a scholarly vein of work (pardon the pun) in the field that brings more seriousness to the practice, albeit less fluid and constant than Sherlockian scholarship. But we kept coming back to the intersections of Holmes and Dracula, in all forms: written, film and stage, and how each have their cycles of popularity that are typically driven by a single piece of work each time.We had a number of listener comments from you regarding ("Elementary, My Dear CBS) that included very visceral opinions about the Jonny Lee Miller / Lucy Liu show, as well as some traditional and fanciful ideas for Canonically-inspired Halloween costumes. For our Gas-Lamp this episode, we welcome a very special guest for a chilling reading of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven." We won't spoil it by telling you who it is; you'll have to tune in yourself to hear it.
