This episode of the Let's Meet for a Beer Podcast is part of a series that we created with our friends at Brightside.  Each episode in this series showcases a unique Calgary-based craft brewery that is part of Brightside's “Friends With Benefits” Program.  Today I sat down with Doug Hamilton, CEO, and co-founder of Inner City Brewing which is located in the beltline area of Calgary - two blocks from the Alberta Beer Festival office!  Before opening the brewery, Doug worked around the world as a Geologist for almost 30 years.  He has always been passionate about beer with the mind of an entrepreneur - so for his next adventure, he combined the two to help create Inner City Brewing. On the podcast, we discuss the challenges of operating a new business during a pandemic.  Doug shares how the brewery was able to pivot (I know - I hate that word too) and credits his team, led by his fellow co-founder and Brewery GM Dave Bell, for their survival.  They built Inner City as a way to connect with people and are excited to bring back live music, and other community-minded events soon! Our team has worked with Inner City Brewing on a number of projects, including Be The Brewer and Beerfest-In-A-Box.  It was great to connect with Doug and learn more about his journey - I hope you enjoy the conversation.More on Brightside:Join Brightside and experience the banking app that helps you do more. The 365 Days of Astronomy, the daily podcast of the International Year of Astronomy 2009

https://youtu.be/LH58Py4_jBA Host: Fraser Cain ( @fcain )Special Guest: This week we are airing Fraser's interview with Dr. Cole Miller, Professor of Astronomy at the University of Maryland, College Park. Dr. Miller led one of two separate teams that analyzed Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) data - specifically that for pulsar called J0030+0451 (J0030) in the constellation Pices - and were able to map the surface features of a pulsar for the first time.   Dr. Miller's research focuses on the theory and modeling of high-energy radiation from neutron stars and black holes. Data interpreted using his theoretical models have provided the first evidence for the existence of an innermost stable circular orbit around neutron stars and black holes (a key prediction of strong-gravity general relativity) and evidence for a 2.3 solar mass neutron star, which constrains strongly the equation of state of matter at high densities.   Cole's research interests extend beyond compact objects to subjects such as the use of gravitational lensing to study different classes of cosmological sources. He has used lensing to place limits on the average redshift of gamma-ray bursts and to constrain dark energy parameters based on observations in the Hubble Deep Field. He has also investigated the effects of accretion by primordial compact objects on the power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background. In particular, he has placed limits on the contributions of such objects to dark matter and on the degree to which ionization from accretion can be used to explain the weakness of the second acoustic peak as observed with BOOMERanG. Most recently, he has collaborated with Doug Hamilton on models of intermediate-mass black holes and their implications for gravitational radiation. In Broadway Idiot documentary filmmaker Doug Hamilton gets an all access pass to film a behind-the-scenes look at Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong as he observes the cast and crew interpret his music for the stage from day one to opening night of American Idiot. Doug joins host Robin Milling to discuss how he got inside this Broadway world shown from the unique perspective of this musical superstar. He knew he had something special when he captured a teary-eyed Armstrong watching the cast performing his songs for the first time. Illustrating his commitment to the project, Armstrong offered home video footage as a pre-teen singing Send In The Clowns to replace a scene for the film which was already in the can. Doug says, "I had found this old footage of Billy, not what you see in the film, singing Christmas songs at 14 in some hospital. He said, 'this is great but I can do better.' " He had gone to his cousins and gotten that old family footage. I had to remix the film with that new scene but it was so worth it.'  Throughout the story Doug weaves concert footage of Green Day with entire numbers from the show. Fans of Green Day who couldn't afford the price of a Broadway ticket will not only see the making of American Idiot the musical in the documentary, but Doug confirms the feature film version is well in the works starring Armstrong as St. Jimmy.
