Lots of news in the NHL this week, and not a lot of it is good...buckle up! Tune in as we begin by discussing the Detroit Red Wings & their loss to Florida, including Simon Edvinsson towering over Matthew Tkachuk (& Yzerman's vision to build a giant blue line with Seider, Edvinsson, Wallinder, & others), Pius Suter staying hot, & Dylan Larkin's sneaky goal (3:45). Next, their shootout win over St. Louis, including Filip Zadina breaking through, Alex Chiasson with another net-front PPG, Lucas Raymond's shootout winner - as well as the "Connor Bedard" NHL Draft Lottery standings & why the "tank" matters more for position with Fantilli, Michkov, Carlsson, & others in the mix (10:40). Next, we take a look at another NHL Draft Prospect Profile that may be relevant to Hockeytown: Brayden Yager out of the WHL. Can the elite shooting forward be a fit for Lalonde's Red Wings? Does Yzerman project him to be a center (21:10)? With the Adidas NHL jersey deal set to expire in 2024, Fanatics has stepped in with a 10 year deal with the league - tune in to hear us discuss (emphatically) why hockey fans everywhere are incensed at this news (31:20). Finally, with the Ohtani vs. Trout showdown in the World Baseball classic, we discuss what Gary Bettman & the NHL is missing out on by not having their players in an international best-on-best tournament like the Olympics or World Cup of Hockey. When will we see McDavid vs. Matthews (44:40)? Plus, some Red Wings news as Red Savage becomes a Michigan State Spartan and Jon McDonald signs with Detroit out of the NCAA (59:05) before taking your questions during Overtime (1:00:57) - enjoy! The Midday Show
Acuña cleared by Braves to play in World Baseball Classic

The Midday Show

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 9, 2023 2:07

The World Baseball classic may be the most underrated sports tournament in the world. Twenty international teams will clash in the WBC, initially split in to four pools in the cities of Taichung, Tokyo, Phoenix, and Miami. In 2017 USA took home the gold for the first time by beating Japan in the finals. In a 2017 semi-finals game, Baltimore Orioles star Adam Jones robbed a homerun from fellow Oriole Manny Machado, which was one of the most memorable moments in the tournament (for USA). If we get the same finals matchup this year as we did in 2017, we'll get to see Angels stars Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani oppose each other, possibly with Ohtani on the mound. The Braves' Ronald Acuña expressed interest in wanting to play in the tournament representing his native Venezuela earlier in the year, but because of the ongoing rehabilitation of his surgically repaired right knee he was advised against it, until now. After seeing Acuña on the knee in the early spring, the Braves have changed their mind, and this is a good thing. Acuña will spend two weeks at Braves spring training before he reports to Miami, so if anything doesn't look right, they can always reverse course. And, as was discussed on "The Midday Show w/ Andy and Randy", he won't have to travel from Miami for the entirety of the tournament. Not only does pool B, which includes Team Venezuela, play all of their games at LoanDepot Park in Miami, but the quarters, semis, and finals are in Miami as well. In the event of a Venezuela early departure from the tournament, Acuña simply joins the Braves in Venice for the rest of Spring Training. The World Baseball Classic kicks off on March 8.

Now he might not play for Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic. Uh oh. (25:30) Review: Shotgun Wedding. (29:40) So You Wanna Talk to Samson!? The Great Coaches: Leadership & Life

Our Great Coach on this episode is Baseball Coach Jon Deeble. Jon represented Australia as a Baseball pitcher at the 1988 Olympics. He transitioned into coaching in 1994 in America as a minor league manager and hitting coach with the Florida Marlins and Boston Red Sox. In 2000 he became the Head Coach of the Australian team eventually leading them to the silver medal at the 2004 Olympics. Then in 2011 he led the team to 5th place at the World Baseball classic, the country's highest ever placing. He became the first Australian to coach in the Majors when he became Boston's first-base coach in 2005. And from 2002 to 2016 he was the Head Scout for the Boston Red Sox in the Pacific Rim. In 2016 he joined the Los Angeles Dodgers' in the same role. Jon was born with a mitt in his hand, thanks to both parents representing Australia at baseball. The sport has taken him all over the world, and allowed him to cross paths with some of the biggest names in baseball. He is passionate about developing young talent; and global enough in his perspective, to know that you have to treat people as individuals if you want to help them succeed. He is honest about his shortcomings as a coach and at the same time proud of his teams achievements, and the role that culture and leadership played in delivering them. The other key parts of the interview were: His use of player psychological profiling to allow him to find the best way to communicate with individuals. How he encourages his teams to focus on the execution of their particular role in service of the greater goal of perfect execution for the team. Hs views on self-doubt, and how has a coach he knows there can be a problem when he expects more from someone than they expect from themselves. And how the great coaches are honest, are excellent communicators and not afraid to make hard decisions. This was a wonderful conversation, and I hope you enjoy it as much as Jim and I did. If you would like to send us any feedback or if you know a great coach, who has a unique story to share, then we would love to hear from you, please contact us at thegreatcoachespodcast@gmail.com You can also follow us and comment on all our Great Coaches here Twitter @CoachesGreat Facebook @TheGreatCoaches Instagram @the_great_coaches_podcast YouTube The Great Coaches Podcast LinkedIn The Great Coaches Podcast
