AI summaries threaten organic traffic in search results. Mike Walrath, CEO of Yext, explains why brands should focus on maintaining awareness rather than traffic metrics. He advocates for making structured data widely available to AI systems, enabling direct customer connections without traditional website visits. In this episode, Mike Walrath of Yext tackles the strategic dilemma of optimizing for Google AI Overviews versus alternative search environments. He argues that optimizing for Google's AI search already leverages existing SEO practices, while diversifying to other platforms creates additional visibility opportunities. I'm so grateful to have Heather Walrath joining us on the podcast today. She currently serves as financial education and accredited financial counselor at the Navy Mutual Aid Association. As part of the Education Team, Heather speaks one-on-one with servicemembers and spouses and provides group presentations to servicemembers and families across the country to increase their knowledge and understanding of financial matters. Her areas of expertise include military and survivor benefits, including VA benefits and Survivor Benefit Plan. Heather talks about her early career interest in this profession after being an AFCPE FINRA Fellow. Her early volunteer experiences helped her build her skills and showed her how much she loved this work. Later on, she started out giving presentations on a part-time basis for Navy Mutual before that eventually grew into a full-time role. Over her career, Heather has given hundreds of presentations to thousands of servicemembers and their families about military transition. But as you will hear, she shares just as many lessons learned from her own experience going through military transition earlier this year when her active duty spouse retired. We spend a good deal of time talking through her experience and wisdom of the transition and retirement process, how to find good source material, and the advice that can help you make an even more successful military transition yourself. I know this will be a big benefit to all our listeners both getting ready for their own transition or working with others who are! https://www.linkedin.com/in/heather-walrath-afc%C2%AE-mqfp%C2%AE-6531b077/ https://www.navymutual.org/mission-educate/ https://www.navymutual.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/candid_conversations_flyer-2024-01.23.2024.pdf https://www.choosefi.com/military-fi-optimizing-your-financial-plan-before-military-retirement-daniel-kopp-cfp-ep-487/
Each month, our Carrier Connections program features a different X-linked condition with the goal to increase awareness and education of X-linked conditions and how they impact females. This month, we are featuring X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH). XLH is a genetic disease caused by mutations in the PHEX gene, which cause bone cells to secrete increased concentrations of a hormone responsible for inducing phosphate excretion in the kidneys, ultimately resulting in a deficiency of phosphate in the body. This can cause widespread issues throughout the body as phosphate plays an essential role in the proper functioning of bones and teeth. Most cases of XLH first manifest in childhood, with the presentation of bowed legs appearing as a prominent symptom. Today, we are bringing on Lauren Walrath, Vice President of Public Affairs at Kyowa Kirin North America. Lauren joined Kyowa Kirin in 2019 and has been responsible for building and leading the region's Public Affairs team, including its communications and advocacy capabilities, to support the company's culture, reputation and work with patient communities. She is a key member of the company's North America Executive Committee and Global Corporate Communications leadership team. Carrier Connections is sponsored by Kyowa Kirin and Amgen. Lauren explains their approach to patient-centric discovery, "In advocacy, we're really trying to find where the gaps are and how we can best work with partners to make long-term and sustainable improvements for patients. So that can be in the form of starting new research, funding new grants, addressing disparities, working on developing new education programs. Generally, we're looking for meaningful opportunities to help patients and their families on their journey from diagnosis to treatment. We work closely with the advocates, and we bring all of that understanding back to our teams here at Kyowa Kirin so that we really can engage our cross-functional partners in doing more to help the patients we serve." Susan elaborates, "And then there is Jim and Jeffrey who have Sézary syndrome, which is a more serious form of CTCL that affects less than 5% of the patients. What we've done is we've captured their journeys in their own voice, the journey to diagnosis, their experience on treatment, and ultimately what they've learned along the way, what really keeps them motivated to not give up. Drs. Will Smith, Steve Rush, and Ben Walrath join us for a great conversation about the role of the military EMS director. These three men have accumulated significant experience leading MEDEVAC/CASEVAC organizations, and their perspective is valuable for flight medics and Flight Surgeons alike.During the episode, the conversation frequently emphasizes the importance of educational resources for flight docs, especially:deployedmedicine.comThe Joint Trauma System's Pre-deployment Prioritized Read Lists by Clinical RoleCOL Robert Mabry's seminal papers: Mabry, R. Project Details Hello friend, I am Timothy Kimo Brien, head instigator at Create Art Podcast where we help you to tame the inner critic and create more than we consume. Every year in April National Poetry Writing Month occurs, this is a challenge to write 30 poems in 30 days and comes from the NaPoWriMo site. When you participate you are given a prompt every day for 30 days and you can choose to follow the prompt or not. Each prompt has a commentary with it and a style of poetry that you may not be familiar with. I enjoy it because it stretches my creative muscles and helps me organize my thoughts. I also really enjoy a good challenge. There is also an opportunity to read other people's work as they post on their websites and for you to comment on their work, giving them encouragement or offering a suggestion. Care to join me on this journey? Day 6 Prompt Finally, here’s our daily (optional) prompt. Our prompt yesterday asked you to take inspiration from another poem, and today’s continues in the same vein. This prompt, which comes from Holly Lyn Walrath, is pretty simple. As she explains it here: Go to a book you love. Find a short line that strikes you. Make that line the title of your poem. Write a poem inspired by the line. Then, after you’ve finished, change the title completely. I encourage you to read Walrath’s full post, which has some other ideas for generating new poems based on pre-existing text. I used the Tao Te Ching 72nd verse Hence the sage knows himself but does not display himself, loves himself but does not exalt himself. Day 6 Poem Hence the sage knows himself but does not display himself, loves himself but does not exalt himself/ Tao Te Ching verse 72 To know is to love If it takes a lifetime To look up from the page And receive the inspiration To describe what these eyes have seen Is that failure Follow a path How do you know that the path Will lead to a desired destination Will the footsteps imprinted in the freshly fallen snow Lead to home Or the jaws of the leopard Does the feeling of certainty Come with a written guarantee Reviewed by lawyers and philosophers Or is it just a chemical imbalance That caused visions from the afflicted And led nations to kneel A preference of quietude Acceptance that the ending is unknown Undetermined That the accepted good May just be the most insidious evil Cloaked in the mindless praises Of those who wished to be fooled Of those who must always be on the side of right Rather than common good If the utmost wish is to see the wonders of life Lift up the eyes from behind the page Put down the pen Forget waiting on inspiration Open the eyes and see The answers are simpler And visible Than what the stories of old have told Reaching Out To reach out to me, email timothy@createartpodcast.com I would love to hear about your journey and what you are working on. Vermont writer, artist and anthropologist, Dana Walrath, who has contributed to the graphic medicine book, Menopause: A Comic Treatment (PSU Press). You can check out the book trailer here. Dana Walrath generously offered us a Write the Book Prompt for today’s show, which is related to the advice she offered for writers. Precede your writing session by spending some time drawing, even simply drawing the evocative and inspiring spiral, which is a great way to tap into your subconscious but also establishes a ritual that announces to your creative self that it is time to write. I have to say, I got all excited as I wrote this prompt out and put down the word inspiring right before the word spiral. But then I looked them up and there is no etymological link; the association must be coincidental. However!!! … that doesn’t mean we can’t link the words for ourselves as we work. Good luck with your work in the coming week and please tune in next week for another prompt or suggestion. Music Credit: Aaron Shapiro

ON A MISSIONMENTAL AND BEHAVIORAL HEALTHCARE for all in our Armed Forces is a GOOD, IMPORTANT, and ESSENTIAL thing that SHOULD BE ENCOURAGED.For my sisters and brothers-in-arms of the United States Armed Forces, this is for you… for all of us! The beauty of being at the pinnacle of one's military career and in its twilight years is that you just may find you have more courage and confidence to speak up about things that you should have always been able to speak up about when you felt fairly certain that you would be criticized or scorned.I am Shawn Walrath. I am an Air Force O-6/colonel. These are matters of public record. And I'm asking for a few minutes of your time.We SHOULD NOT have NEGATIVE STIGMAS associated with MENTAL and BEHAVIORAL HEALTHCARE! Someone (me) seeking Mental or Behavioral healthcare should be viewed no differently than someone seeking everyday Primary Medical or Dental healthcare. It's about taking care of oneself and each other! So, here's that next big step in my career...I choose to be an even stronger advocate for Mental and Behavioral healthcare. I choose to not only lead, encourage, and support others but to LEAD BY MY OWN EXAMPLE! So here it is...I am a MENTAL HEALTH PATIENT. I am a BEHAVIORAL HEALTH PATIENT. I am a survivor and I am receiving therapy for diagnosed Anxiety Disorder. The specifics are for me and my provider(s). I am also a survivor and I am receiving therapy for diagnosed Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Again, the specifics are for me and my provider(s). I share this NOT for sympathy. Because, I'm all good. My therapy over the past 14 months has helped me a great deal in learning how to change how I think about and how I respond to these challenges. Rather, I share this to REASSURE my fellow service members--my fellow joint warriors--that you too CAN and SHOULD be comfortable in seeking Mental or Behavioral healthcare. I DIDN'T LOSE MY SECURITY CLEARANCE. I WASN'T REMOVED FROM MY JOB OR MY POSITION OF TRUST. I WAS STILL A VERY SUCCESSFUL SQUADRON COMMANDER WHILE SUFFERING MOSTLY ALONE. I'M STILL WORLDWIDE DEPLOYABLE. AND... I'M STILL A STRONG HUSBAND, FATHER, FRIEND, AIRMAN, LEADER, OFFICER, INTELLIGENCE PROFESSIONAL, AND JOINT WARRIOR. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY...THERE IS NOTHING, AND I MEAN NOTHING, TO BE ASHAMED ABOUT!If you need support, encouragement, or assistance, CALL ON ME. I'M HERE. I will NEVER leave a SISTER or BROTHER-IN-ARMS alone. We're in this TOGETHER, through it all.SHARE YOUR STORYI am writing an article on this topic that I started over a year ago. And it will hopefully be published this summer. Please feel welcomed and encouraged to share this blog and podcast on your own social media platform.Again if you need help and you are unsure of where to start or how to start, call on me. Earlier this week I talked with Joel Salatin to get a farmer’s perspective on how COVID-19 is affecting farms. Today I’d like to discuss how the COVID-19 situation is affecting restaurants. Instead of relying on headlines and news reports, I went directly to the source by reaching out to the co-founder of Organic Krush, Michelle Walrath. In this interview, Michelle provides innovative solutions to help restaurants survive and customers thrive during this challenging time. Michelle is an inspiring leader in the health and wellness movement. She co-created several documentaries including: Fed Up, GMO OMG, and The Devil We know. As a life-long health advocate and mother of 4 children, Michelle was frustrated about the severe lack of healthy options on the go. She realized that parents were left with the choice of spending hours preparing food, or settling for fast food that left them feeling tired, sluggish, and weighed down. So, Michelle co-create Organic Krush, an ALL organic lifestyle eatery with options ranging from organic breakfast to family dinners and even fully catered meals! With 6 Organic Krush locations, including Virginia and New York, Michelle is a leader in the wellness and fast food market. You can connect with Michelle at: www.OrganicKrush.com

On Friday, April 13, 1951, Troy Powell and Ernest Walrath were executed at the Idaho State Penitentiary for the crime of murder in the 1st degree, a crime both young men confessed and plead guilty to. The execution took place outside the walls of the prison in #2 yard, away from other inmates. It serves as Idaho's only double execution to date, as well as the youngest men to be sent to the gallows in Idaho's history. This bonus episode explores the crime and the perspectives of a former retired Idaho supreme court justice, the daughter of Walrath and Powell's attorney, and the current historic sites administrator at the Old Idaho Penitentiary. Kate and Rick do a live taste test of one of the world’s most popular condiments: hot sauce! Their guest, software engineer and cooking hobbyist Wayne Walrath, sent Kate and Rick SEVEN homemade hot sauces to taste live on the show. Will they survive with their palates intact? From jalapeño to habanero to cayenne, they discuss the different types of chili peppers, find out what makes a hot sauce hot, and differentiate between heat and flavor. What cools the burn? Is it easy to make your own hot sauce? Do they need to age or ferment, or can you just throw things in a blender? You’ll find out here. And Rick teaches us one very important lesson about what not to do with hot sauce. Warning: due to the tasting strategies, this episode contains a lot of crunching. You Won’t Believe What I Ate Last Night is the ongoing conversation by Kate DeVore and Rick Fiori about their endeavor to be and stay healthy in a really tasty world with kindness and compassion towards themselves and others. Hillary Walrath grew up on a remote ranger station in northern Idaho where the Lochsa River flowed through her backyard. That experience instilled an intrinsic connection to water, wild places, and rivers, which have remained a constant presence in her life, and which she has translated into her career. As a Wildlife Biologist and Outreach Coordinator for Trout Unlimited, Hillary’s mission is to find creative, smart solutions that work for both wildlife and landowners. With increasing populations, pressures on natural resources, and the value of water in the West, creative problem solving is called for on a daily basis. She’s also an avid outdoorswoman and founder of the Seedskadee Women’s Fly Fishing Float, an annual fly fishing event that empowers women to get on the water and learn to fish. As a mother of two daughters, Hillary noticed she was often the only woman on the river; she created the float to inspire more women to feel confident getting outside with their families. Her goals with her recreational and conservation outreach efforts are to instill value and appreciation for Wyoming’s wild places and to inspire more people to utilize public lands so they care about the preservation of land for future generations. Dana Walrath refers to her work as a border-crossing blend of creative writing, anthropology and art. The daughter of refugees from the Armenian genocide, she has used stories and art to teach medical humanities at the University of Vermont's College of Medicine since moving to the state in 2000. On the show Dana talks about her graphic memoir, “Aliceheimer's: Through the Looking Glass,” which combines drawings and stories to chronicle three years of caregiving for her mother, Alice, when she was in the middle stages of Alzheimer's disease. Dana tells us about her frustrating encounters with the medical system, how her mother expressed herself creatively despite having Alzheimer's and how living with her mother gave Dana an opportunity to make peace with her despite their historically difficult relationship. Currently based in Dublin, Ireland, Dana is an Atlantic Fellow for Equity in Brain Health at the Global Brain Health Institute, where she's developing a second graphic memoir focusing on end stages of dementia and dementia across cultures. And that Superman in his 60’s who is a total mad lad according to Reader’s digest happens to be my dad.

In this episode, we talk about one of the most effective non-hormonal supplements on the market for strength and muscle gain- creatine. Creatine is usually associated with muscle building and meatheads, but it has far-reaching and well-documented benefits including improved recovery from exercise, injury and brain trauma prevention, and faster rehabilitation from injury. There are also studies showing improved cognitive function in vegetarians and vegans, and an investigation is underway to examine its medical uses in the management of diseases ranging from diabetes to osteoarthritis. It’s even been investigated in studies looking at it’s benefits to reducing the harmful effects of aging.

Our guest this week is Matt Walrath of Beyond Macros. We learn how Matt became a nutrition coach, what it means for him to be one, and the approach he takes with his clients. He walks us a through a primer on macronutrients, what they are, what role they play, and why we should care. We then shift to the topic of the day, creating a new normal for his clients and how one goes about doing so through the development of sustainable and appropriate habits. Subjects we cover include how to become aware and recognize triggers, getting our body and mindset to break from homeostasis, and different externalities that could deter our nutrition journey. We finish of the episode talking about Matt’s core values which definitely bring the episode to an epic conclusion. Enjoy!
In today's episode, I bring you the second half of our carbohydrate discussion. In last week's episode, we discussed how to use a carbohydrate and protein combination, pre and post-workout to improve recovery, increase muscle building and strength and decrease muscle breakdown.
This is the second episode in our nutrient timing series, and I will be reintroducing you to the sweet, sweet nutrient called the carbohydrate. Carbohydrates are the secret weapon of most elite athletes, and research shows that they play an absolutely massive role in recovery from intense exercising and strength training. If you missed it, you should go back and download part one of nutrient timing series, where I give background on the concept of nutrient timing and I teach you about the best times to consume protein around your workout, how much of it to consume and why the long held belief that you have to consume protein within an hour of exercise might be incorrect.
The first episode in our nutrient timing series, and I’ll be discussing the most common question I get regarding nutrient timing.
Dana Walrath took a different approach when she wanted to tell her story. Instead of just words, she decided to use art to express her story. Her graphic memoir, "Aliceheimer," is her story about dealing with Alzheimer's. Originally aired on Caregiver SOS: On Air presented by the WellMed Charitable Foundation on Oct. 9, 2016, in San Antonio, TX on 930 AM KLUP “The Answer.” With co-hosts Carol Zernial and Ron Aaron. It's time for another round of insightful reviews, and this week Gwen and Derek have just what the doctored ordered. In fact, the first two books they discuss are part of Penn State University Press' Graphic Medicine series. Peter Dunlap-Shohl's My Degeneration: A Journey through Parkinson's is the author's account of living with Parkinson's disease. It's not exactly a memoir, although it does explore the impact that the disease has had on Dunlap-Shohl's life over the past decade. My Degeneration is more of an instructional text, or perhaps a survival guide, on how to navigate the debilitating straits of his condition. As Gwen and Derek reveal, the book is an informative, no-nonsense look at Parkinson's, and while it posses a hopeful and even upbeat tone, it is anything but a Pollyanna narrative. The second book from the Graphic Medicine series is Aliceheimer's: Alzheimer's through the Looking Glass, Dana Walrath's account of confronting her mother's Alzheimer's disease (and which will be released in April). The author uses Lewis Carroll's classic children's tale as a metaphor for her mother's condition, as well as her own grappling with the dilemma. Although technically not a comic, Aliceheimer's could be considered a "graphic narrative" in that Walrath juxtaposes collage-style illustrations with textual accounts of her mother's experiences. Both Graphic Medicine books are deeply personal and moving texts that can speak directly to patients, caregivers, and medical professionals. Next, Derek and Gwen take a look at the first issue of Ted McKeever's new miniseries, Pencil Head (Image Comics). What makes this title so striking and so different from his previous works (such as Miniature Jesus and Superannuated Man) is that it's about the comics industry and, according to the publisher, a semi-autobiographical account of the strange things that occur in the life of a creator. Indeed, McKeever's shark, and at times surreal, black-and-white art is the perfect vehicle to reveal the weirdness underlying the profession. Finally, Gwen and Derek wrap up the show by looking at the latest adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's classic gothic tale, Enrica Jang and Jason Strutz's The Cask of Amontillado (Action Lab Studios). Derek is an aficionado of Poe adaptations, and the two begin their discussion by highlighting both the adherences to and the deviations from the original narrative. Jang doesn't really retain the short story's complicating narrative frame -- Montresor's confessional (and ambiguous) account provided years after the event -- but this one-shot does set up her and Strutz's upcoming limited series, The House of Montresor. This will be their sequel to the classic, a look into the consequences of Montresor's calculated murder and what it means to both his and Fortunato's families.
Dana Walrath is a medical anthropologist, author, and artist. Her first book, Aliceheimer’s, will be published in the US by Penn State University Press. In this talk, titled “Cultural Spaces, Comics, and Contested Memories” Dana desrcibes the ways medical anthropology and comic helped her to shape a new perspective about the experiences she was having with her mother Alice’s Alzheimer’s disease. She also discusses her deepening this work by exploring her mother’s past in Armenia, and the legacy of the Armenia Genocide of 1915. And she’ll sing. It’s a fantastic talk. Be sure to keep an eye on your screen as some of... Read More
This is arguably Charles Mingus' last great recording. It was done at two separate sessions. One composition was done in 1976 with his working band of the time with Jack Walrath (trumpet), George Adams (tenor saxophone), Danny Mixon (piano) and of course Dannie Richmond on drums and Mingus on bass. The band was augmented by some fine Italian musicans as well. The piece was to be used in a film called "Todo Modo" but alas for a variety of complex reasons it wasn't used in the film but we have the music. That is the first selection. The second called "Cumbia and Jazz Fusion" was recorded the following year (1977) and the first indications of ALS (undiagnosed) was happening to Mingus. Regardless, the composition showed Mingus' appreciation for what we now call "world music". It features his last regular band with Walrath, Richmond and Ricky Ford (tenor saxophone), Bob Neloms (piano) augmented by a few others like Jimmy Knepper on trombone etc. It's a fascinating musical excursion into the mind of Mingus and the music ranges from exotic to straight swing with some satire, politics and ribald humor and anger all rolled into one piece. Mingus' music continues to be some of the most compelling in American Jazz and this is one of his last great statements. Mingus died on January 5, 1979.
