Author Dan Valenti joins Cara & John Krol on The Blend Podcast to discuss a true labor of love and a book that is the result of work and interviews that spanned nearly four decades. The book reveals previously untold details of how iconic characters in Kubrick's masterpiece Full Metal Jacket were chosen and molded through the eyes of the actors who portrayed the epic roles. UNVEILING THE TRUTH BEHIND AN ICONIC FILM-Step behind the curtain of one of cinema's most unforgettable films and performances. In Stanley Kubrick's Full Mental Straight Jacket, author Dan Valenti takes readers on an unprecedented journey into the making of a masterpiece. This revelatory work explores the genius, methods, and controversial practices that haveelevated Stanley Kubrick to legendary status among film directors.THE UNTOLD STORY For decades, the full story of this film, notably the creation of Gunnery Sergeant Hartmann—one of cinema's most compelling, blistering, and quoted characters—remained shrouded in mystery. Until now.Drawing from exclusive interviews conducted over two years with actor Lee Ermey (Hartman) shortly after Full Metal Jacket was released, Valenti delivers insightsthat only a trusted confidant could access. From 2022 to 2024, Valenti also conducted over a dozen in-depth interviews with the film's supporting cast—including Tim Colceri, Kubrick's original choice for Hartman. The unsparing probe uncovers the exhilarating but nightmarish realities of working in "Kubrick country.”FROM THE AUTHOR WHO KNEW THE TRUTH As the collaborator on a novel screenplay project with Ermey himself, Valenti gained unprecedented access to fresh insights about Kubrick and the film that have never before been shared with the public. For film historians, Kubrick enthusiasts, and anyone fascinated by the dark corners of filmmaking, this book provides the definitive account of how one of cinema's most memorable characters came to life—and the personal cost.Dan is an author whose books have made him a “six-decade man” — his titles have been published in the 1970s (1979), '80s, '90s, '00s, tens (2010, 11), and 20s. When it comes to the greatest Vietnam war movie of all time, two films come to mind: Francis Ford Coppola's "Apocalypse Now" and Stanley Kubrick's "Full Metal Jacket." Longtime listener Hot Sauce Steve was kind enough to commission the latter. Everyone remembers the belly laughs and jaw-dropping surprises in "Full Metal Jacket," R. Lee Ermey's unforgettable performance, Vincent D'Onofrio's body transformation, and the wealth of dark humor. But we don't always take the time to celebrate the film's sets or dig deeper into Kubrick's themes of dehumanization, indoctrination, and whether man can withstand the unnatural conditions of war. In this episode, the Shat Crew hears Big D's Sapper School Tales, explores sex-worker inflation, outlines the economics of short-time versus long-time, debates slow-motion deaths, and plans Ash's Chaturbate career. It takes a certain kind of man to be a successful u.s. Marine drill instructor. It seems to come naturally to some men. And one of them turned it into a successful acting career. R. Lee Ermey was nominated for a Golden Globe for his work in the 1987 film "Full Metal Jacket." He went on to play tough, rugged authority figures in a number of oher movies -- even “Toy Story.” In 2002 the History Channel came calling, and made Ermey the star of the show “Mail Call, which quickly became the network's most popular show.”

Today we salute one of the most recognizable United States Marines to ever wear the uniform: Gunnery Sergeant R. Lee Ermey. “Gunny”, as he liked to be called, became the essence of the Marines in the eyes of the American public, when he stepped into the role of Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in the 1987 Stanley Kubrick film "Full Metal Jacket". R. Lee started life on a Kansas farm in 1944 and in 1958 moved with his family to a small town in Washington State where he got into repeated scrapes with the local law until a judge offered him a choice: jail or enlisting in the military; he chose to enlist. R. Lee Ermey went to Boot Camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego and then served in the aviation support field until he was assigned back to MCRD as a Drill Instructor from 1965 to 1967. Then-Sergeant Ermey was stationed in Okinawa in support of MWSG-17 and in 1968 was sent to Vietnam where he spent 14 months In Country. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant during his time in Okinawa but in 1972 was medically discharged as a result of numerous injuries. Ermey then moved to the Philippines where he attended the University of Manila on the G.I. Bill and had his first brush with Hollywood when he was asked to be the technical advisor on Francis Ford Coppola’s "Apocalypse Now" being filmed there. But Ermey changed the movie world forever when he was hired as a technical advisor to Stanley Kubrick's film "Full Metal Jacket". When Kubrick saw Ermey's instructional tape on how to act like a drill instructor, he knew that no one else could play the role of Gunnery Sergeant Hartman. R. Lee Ermey was granted the honorary rank of Gunnery Sergeant by The Commandant of the Marine Corps, General James L. Jones in 2002. He went on to act in dozens of movies and television projects, playing military roles, cops, judges, and authority figures in movies like “Seven”, “Mississippi Burning”, “Miami Vice”, and many more. He also voiced the plastic green soldiers in all of the “Toy Story” movies as well as characters in “Sponge Bob”, “The Simpsons”, and “Family Guy”. On April 15, 2018 at the age of 74, Gunnery Sergeant R. Lee Ermey passed away from complications related to pneumonia in a Santa Monica Hospital. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery outside of Washington D.C.

Including some personal stories of our own interactions with a few of the dearly departed. And while we wonder if we’ll be considered a phenomenon had the lasting effect on generations of people, we also address… the wheelchair in Forrest Gump, Eighth Grade, The Henson Studios, Anjelica Huston, they recreated that corner of the street from police photographs, playing a permutation of the same roll, it’s as much a history lesson and a performance, we'll have these weird little moments of serendipity in life, he's not the kind of guy would let a little thing like a typhoon and stop him from making his movie, everybody’s Grandpa,William Peter Blatty, editing that was unconventional for that era, the next Exorcist, if you’re not here… you’re material, an architect who helps restore old churches, felt pressured into doing the scene, The Prestige, there's so much real-life experience in the face, it's strange the way that it delivers its brand of weirdness, Todd Solondz, the rigmarole of the legal system, Tinky Winky, you could tell he was a prankster by nature, the Coen Brothers, the horror is the atmosphere, John Boorman, kept re-finding herself, the comedy grows with the kids, the eternal father figure, The Simpsons, his transformation from a brooding, mysterious jackass to a gregarious, dancing, gum-chewing jackass, the first true-crime movie, it was a one-legged Mayor… of the city… he had a peg leg, I don’t think there’s ever been a more Fred-statement, I feel like that's just a holdover of old Hollywood, anachronistic jump cuts back and forth, crooked dice from the 1500s and acting right up to the grave. Spoiler Alert: Along the way we end up ruining the ending of Don’t Look Now, Sleepaway Camp and possibly Hereditary and A Serious Man. So listen carefully… you have been warned. “Well, I would actually say out of all those that died this past year - if I’d expected any one of them to have been clever enough to stage their own death, it would have been…”

Movie Meltdown - Episode 228 R. Lee Ermey declares war on lame podcasts and so he joins forces with us here at "Movie Meltdown" to deliver a great episode! Most people know R. Lee Ermey from his legendary performance as Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in "Full Metal Jacket". But in his time, he's been involved in 75 movies, hosted TV shows, done animated voice-over work, been a product spokesperson and so many other projects. But more important than that, long before his acting days he served his country in the Marine Corps and actually went to war himself. So we discuss his early days, just how he got involved in the military, and what eventually led him to Hollywood. Plus we hear his stories about working with the likes of Stanley Kubrick, Francis Ford Coppola and Peter Jackson! And even though he's been through the horrors of war, we discuss what might just be the scariest thing R. Lee Ermey has ever experienced... kissing Jack Black!  And since we are talking to the man most synonymous with warfare on the silver screen, we settle into "The Grind" where the group sits down to discuss - War Movies. And along the way we mention... Leo Tolstoy, Inglourious Basterds, Apocalypse Now, The Steel Helmet, The English Patient, learning history from film, Born on the Fourth of July, Anna Karenina, The Patriot, hegemony, Thor, The Big Red One, General Grant, Enemy at the Gates, Albanian genocide, Principal Skinner, Cold Mountain, Tom Stoppard, stock war characters, Henry the V, Sam Fuller, K-19: The Widowmaker, the birth of text messaging, shell shock, military therapy, Fixed Bayonets!, Osama Bin Laden, keeping the Emperor, Terrence Malick, George Takei, D.I. Darren McGavin, Zero Dark Thirty, Casablanca, 300, Erwin Rommel, Black Hawk Down, making a movie in a typhoon, Tribes, internment camps, relationships against the backdrop of world events, I turned down ten films last year, The Return of Martin Guerre, the civil war, Schindler's List, MASH, Braveheart, do war movies have to be historically accurate?, what do you say when there are Nazis about?, The Boys in Company C, going to Vietnam, trying to get away from the law, Patton, War and Peace, George Washington's military career, war hero as super hero, honor or emo?, Vassili Zaitsev, the revolutionary war, joining the Marines, The African Queen, is the individual greater than the war?, The Black Robe, Purple Hearts, The Deer Hunter, Nathanael Greene and changing trench warfare.  "If you see my name on a movie... better go see it, because it's a kick-ass movie."  Special thanks to SOG Knives for their help on this episode, check out R. After Platinum Dune's Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot cut deep in the box office, another installment was inevitable, but with Leatherface left one-armed, and scene stealing R Lee Ermey's Sheriff Hoyt squashed like a Texas armadillo, where could the series go next? Platinum Dunes' answer was to make a prequel to their reboot, telling the origin story of the Hewett clan, including witnessing the birth of Leatherface, seeing how Ermey earned his sheriff's badge, and watching as the family dines for the first time on human flesh. Is this new film a tasty morsel to be savored, or just another rancid installment in a wayward horror franchise? Listen to find out!
