After 96 years, Western Spring's Speedway's final race will take place tomorrow night. The Legends Night will be headlined by Midgets, Sprintcars, and other open-wheel categories. In October last year, Auckland councillors voted 11-8 to move all speedway events to Waikaraka Park, which will undergo an $11 million upgrade. Western Springs Speedway Manager John McCullum told Kerre Woodham their focus is on having a good season and sending it out on the right note. He says that under different conditions they could've have still operated out of Western Springs, but the stadium belongs to the city, and the city has made it abundantly clear they see a better use for the stadium. The story has been set, the racers are ready, and the Wildsea is stirring with anticipation at the start of The Final Race. Our very first actual play episode of Storm Of Whispers, where we meet the heroes of our journey across the Wildsea. We pull into dock with Luca and Cybin aboard The Morca, we witness Reverend Rise descend from the Cities of Ascension onto the Wishmaker's Dock, and we see the exiled Venick retaliate against his former ship, the Tiniox Ellineet. The characters come together to participate in the race in hopes of being the crew that can gather all of the Wishmaker's trinkets first and bring them back to have their wishes come true. But time is of the essence. The Horizon death cult wish is coming to fruition and the world will be destroyed by the beings on the moon if someone doesn't wish them away. The race was something seafaring folk started to flock to like an artic trader to a smoke shop. Things got so out of hand. In fact, everyday people started coming together to better their chances of getting a big group wish to come true. Some of these groups had the best intentions for their Wildsea brothers and sisters. Others, though, doomed us all. Episode two of Storm of Whispers is a continuation of our worldbuilding sessions of Microscope. The gang dives deeper into the history surrounding the race, talking about cults, death pacts, and repeat racers. We discover how the average person was able to gain power in the race and the impacts certain groups had on the world. American Magic have made an early statement on the America's Cup stage, following up their first-up demolition of INEOS Team UK with a solid victory over the defending Team New Zealand. In the final race of the opening day of the America's Cup World Series, Dean Barker's crew were hard to fault from start to finish; beating Team New Zealand at the start, matching them manoeuvre for manoeuvre and sailing a smooth race.It was a different story for the Kiwi outfit, who made a slow start and struggled to stay up on their foils in a race which was a far cry from the performance they had in their first-round win over Luna Rossa.Team New Zealand coasted into the starting box against American Magic, keeping a fair distance away from their opponent and while American Magic flew into the starting line, the Kiwis struggled to get up on their foils for the start of the race.Once they did, however, Peter Burling and co had a slight speed advantage and began to close the gap.Facing a slight deficit of 15 seconds after the opening leg of the race, the Kiwis maintained the distance down the second leg, but splashed down while tacking around the marker and went from trailing by 200m to trailing by 400m.The mistake proved costly down the third leg as American Magic held a 26-second lead halfway through the race.Team New Zealand were able to make up six seconds on the fourth leg and, with two legs to go, the final race of the day proved to be the competitive spectacle people were hoping to see. After a fifth leg that turned into a tacking duel, Team New Zealand managed to get the inside track around the marker, drawing a penalty against the Americans in the process, providing the opportunity to take the lead for the first time in the race.Whatever lead they had was shortlived, as they again touched down and lost some speed for just long enough for American Magic to sneak back ahead of them.Down the final leg, things were neck and neck between the teams – with just 12m separating them inside the final 900m of the course.Ultimately, American Magic found the right wind and burned off Team New Zealand late in the final leg to claim a 12-second win.It was the second win in as many races against the Kiwis for Barker, after the Yanks beat the host in a practice race earlier in the week.Team New Zealand made a big statement with their crushing opening win against Luna Rossa. Photo / Dean PurcellIn their opener against Luna Rossa, Team NZ led from start to finish, and the race looked over at the first mark.Te Rehutai crossed the line a staggering 3:13 ahead of the Italians, in what was an absolute, good old-fashioned smashing. The New Zealand crew was faster upwind, quicker downwind and better with their transitions in a result that will send shock waves through the Challenger fleet. The boats made an even start, though Burling had got over the top of Jimmy Spithill in the last period of the pre-start.There was a big split early on – well as large as possible with the narrow boundaries – and Team New Zealand made good ground on the left-hand side of the course. They made further gains – as the Italians struggled to stay on their foils – with plenty of positive talk on the Te Rehutai.Team New Zealand had a 41-second lead around the top mark, and extended further downwind, reaching speeds of more than 40 knots. They were more than a kilometre ahead at the bottom mark and the race already seemed a complete mismatch, with the local boat more than a minute ahead (1:13).The Italians weren't exactly slow – they hit 45 knots during the downwind leg – but couldn't make an impression on their opponents.Team New Zealand held a 1:15 lead when they went around the top mark the second time, and were flying at 47 knots when they completed the second lap.Nothing had changed at the bottom mark (1:17) and it was obvious that Team New Zealand have something special under the hood.Their advantage was 1.3 kilometres as they rounded the mark for th...

Welcome back to the summer edition of the Running Anthropologist podcast, exploring the culture (and history) of running, and especially those who inspire us on the road, trails and in life! Our featured running guest this month is Eric Eichinger, the author of The Final Race, a biography about Eric Liddell (film "Chariots of Fire", based upon his appearance in the 1924 Olympic Games). In this episode, we learn more about his most inspirational accomplishments that actually came after the Olympics. These life stories penned by Eichinger echo Liddell's unwavering commitment to his faith and compassion for both sport and others whom he loved and served. Eric shares many more parallels with his own life and Liddell's in this 45 minute interview. Eric Eichinger also ran competitively: varsity track and field at his alma mater Michigan State University, before also serving in China for several years, like the Scottish Olympic champion Liddell. Also like Liddell, he worked in youth ministry and was drawn to seminary, and finally ordained into the office of the holy ministry (in 2006). Eric includes some glimpses into important breakthroughs in Christian theology, and some debates that still persist in today. What was the life of this introverted humble man, the world's fastest individual in his day who inspired millions roughly a century ago? Throughout Eric's new book and multiple projects available for exploration at his website, his voice of compassion shines, an affirmation of human dignity, especially for the marginalized; Relationships are the heart of God's living kingdom, and humans are made in His image -- first and foremost, to love. The story in a nutshell: Olympian, missionary, and pastor Eric Liddell sacrificed comfort, fame & fortune, and ultimately his life to share this message with those in need in China for almost two decades. He was born and died in China, served there during tremendous social upheaval, during the depression and World War II, where he was a teacher, hospital administrator, coach of many sports, and in his final years an internment camp minister and forced resident due to the Japanese occupation of China. There’s much, much more to this story and to Eric’s journey in telling it in this episode! We hope you’ll join in our little movement by subscribing to the podcast and sharing it with others. You can learn about all of Eric's projects on his website: www.ericeichinger.com Follow us at @RunningAnthropologist on Facebook/Instagram, & visit our blog site for more information on this, and all past episodes! www.runninganthropologist.com

He shares some of the interesting insights he discovered while writing this biography about Eric Liddell.

On this episode I’m joined by Pastor Phil Baker. He recently wrote an amazing 12 part series on the subject of Biblical grace, hyper grace, and how the misuse of grace fulfills end times prophecy. Most importantly, he covers how God’s true grace can empower you to grow in your faith and finish your race strong! We are going to cover some of these topics and shed some light on this important subject. Along the way we’ll answer such questions as: What role does grace play in repentance? Are all of our sins forgiven when we get saved? Why do we need to ask for forgiveness when we sin? Is it Biblical to say that because of God’s grace, when God sees Christians, He sees them through the lens of the blood of Jesus? We’ll also talk about Joseph Prince’s teaching on hyper grace and “Mother Grace”. So grab a tasty beverage and join us as we dive deep into God’s Word!
