In the new sitcom “Small Achievable Goals,” co-creators Meredith MacNeill and Jennifer Whalen star as two women who are navigating menopause while also working in the podcast world. You might recognize the duo from the wildly funny all-female Canadian sketch comedy show “Baroness Von Sketch Show.” Meredith and Jennifer sit down with guest host Talia Schlanger to talk about “Small Achievable Goals,” its hilarious and subversive take on menopause, and how they had to overcome some of their own shame to make it happen.
Two of the four Baroness Von Sketch Show players, Jennifer Whalen and Meredith MacNeill, are back with a new CBC series -- and it's a period piece! The series is called Small Achievable Goals and it is about two women in midlife encountering all of the joys of menopause. Hot flashes, mood swings, homicidal trendencies and more. Now, you can't swing a tampon in daytime TV without Drew Barrymore or Oprah menopausing for station identification. Even in primetime this has come up before. Remember that episode of The Golden Girls? Where Blanche thought she might be pregnant? That episode was called, "End of the Curse."Well, Whalen and MacNeill wage war on the curse. Helping is a top Canadian comedy cast including Jon Dore (The Lake), Peter McKeleghan (Workin' Moms), Tricia Black (Pretty Hard Cases) and Paul Braunstein (Shelved). The two main characters are podcasters, so right there, I have a rooting interest. The eight episode series airs Tuesday nights at 9 p.m. ET on CBC and CBCGem.
Not only is Adam Christie one of Stacey's besties from high school.... he also happens to be an award-winning television writer and stand-up comedian who FINALLY made his appearance on the podcast! Adam won a Canadian Screen Award for his work on the critically acclaimed show Baroness Von Sketch Show on CBC and IFC, and he is the former head writer of This Hour Has 22 Minutes. As an actor, Adam has appeared on Schitt's Creek, What We Do in the Shadows, and The Expanse. Adam's debut stand-up album ‘General Anxiety Disorder' was nominated for a Juno Award for Comedy Album of the Year, and in 2019 he won the Sirius XM Top Comic competition at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Toronto. Diane Flacks is an Emmy-nominated comedy writer who's worked on shows like “Workin' Moms” and “Baroness Von Sketch Show.” Her latest project — a one-woman play called “Guilt (A Love Story)” — is a reflection on her divorce and the grief, fear and overwhelming guilt that followed. Diane joins Tom to tell us about the play and what's funny about going through the worst time of your life.
With her reality comedy I Have Nothing now streaming on Crave, Baroness Von Sketch Show's Carolyn Taylor is here to tackle Colin Higgins' 9 to 5, the 1980 workplace comedy smash that pitted office workers Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton against Dabney Coleman's swaggering jerk of a boss. Your genial host Norm Wilner really wanted to sing the song.
In this 1332nd episode of Toronto Mike'd, Mike chats with Carolyn Taylor about growing up in Montreal, her dad, her rise to power with the Baroness Von Sketch Show and her new series I Have Nothing. Toronto Mike'd is proudly brought to you by Great Lakes Brewery, Palma Pasta, Pumpkins After Dark, Ridley Funeral Home and Electronic Products Recycling Association.
It's Allyson's turn once again to pick the movie our dynamically betrothed duo will watch for the podcast. What on Earth will Mike think of the Natalie Portman starring independent slice of life comedy/drama Where The Heart Is? Well, one thing's for sure, even if he doesn't like it, he'd never abandon Allyson at a Wal-Mart.Allyson recommends the absolutely wonderful Canadian sketch comedy series Baroness Von Sketch Show.Mike recommends the surreal 60s Burt Lancaster starring fever dream of a movie about life or the American dream or maybe it's about machismo...who knows? We know Meredith MacNeill as by-the-book, yet frazzled detective Sam Wazowski on Pretty Hard Cases and for her absurd and hilarious comedic sketches on Baroness Von Sketch Show which she wrote and starred in….but the truth is - she's more than just the wild roles she plays on screen. The depth that she carries through her work comes from recognizing the truth of her life and how she sees the world. She shares with Naomi and Amanda that part of her comedic process involves cozying up to her best friend: failure. From her upbringing in Halifax to performing on stages in the UK, Meredith held hands with her inner voice and her fearlessness to help her achieve her dream to fly. Oh, and if you think perimenopause and chin hairs suck - she'll definitely convince you otherwise.
What was it like to play at Harry and Meghan's royal wedding? The acclaimed cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason knows. You'll hear him tell Tom Power about that experience and what you can expect from his latest album, “Song.” Plus, last month, the TV writer Monica Heisey (Schitt's Creek, Baroness Von Sketch Show) released her highly anticipated debut novel, “Really Good, Actually,” which follows the devastating and often absurd journey of a 28-year-old going through the first year of her divorce. Hear Monica open up about navigating divorce at a young age, and how she found humour in heartbreak.
Todays guest is the incredibly talented, James Hartnett.James is an actor, writer, and stand-up comedian who you might know as Ollie Allen in Ollie's Pack, as well as Steve in New Eden or from his work on Bit Playas, The Boys, True Dating Stories, Baroness Von Sketch Show, Cupcake & Dino: General Services, Hot Doug, Gary and His Demons, Kody Kapow, The Beaverton, and so much more!I absolutely loved chatting with James and I can't wait to share our chat with you! With her friend Jack, she decides to investigate, and finds herself caught in a web of intrigue. It's an explosive parcel of action and adventure.Fun Facts:This is the last film that Lindsay Lohan stars in under her original Disney contract that required her to do three movies, the other two being The Parent Trap and Life-Size.At the beginning of the movie when Lexy and Jen are showing each other their outfit choices, the song playing was later used in Hannah Montana as being the song that Mikayla (Selena Gomez) sings.A song by the band Prozzak, "Get a Clue," appeared in the film and the music video was shown on Disney Channel at the time of its release. The name of the band was changed to Simon and Milo, named after the characters depicted in the music video, so their band name would not be associated with the drugs.A well-concealed reshoot took place in late 2001 to film a different ending concluding that the villain in the film was Meany. In the original ending, the villain turned out to be Mrs. Stern, a teacher at Lexy's school who had known Mr. Walker while he was living in Arizona.Next Movie: Gotta Kick It Up! ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

In response to listener demand (and by that we mean a single listener) we offer a Shelly-centric episode focused on the new frontiers of genetic experimentation. Beth Shannon returns as a special guest to participate in the discussion as to whether or not different specific examples of genetic manipulation are either cool or creepy. Predictably enough, a generous portion of the episode veers off toward a consideration of the relative traits of our own Redheaded League - Peggy, Shelly, and Beth. The top of mind segment of this episode is almost exclusively about the bleakness of the upcoming holiday season because of the raging pandemic. But Shelly introduces a number of examples of genetic experimentation and manipulation that provoke a lively and funny conversation. Among the topics that come up are people born with extra eyelashes (Elizabeth Taylor); whether or not varicose veins are like “purple worms”; people who have bones that do not break (Unbreakable); glow-in-the-dark animals; goats which produce silk; and cows that produce human breast milk. Among the information we glean from these discussions is that Beth is not only redheaded but also left-handed; Peggy and Beth think alike; Shelly knows an awful lot about the inbreeding of the Hapsburgs; John listens to many (perhaps too many) podcasts; and that all knowledge is provisional. (But some people’s ignorance is constant). Among the recommendations is Peggy’s for the Moosewood Cookbook. On this episode I speak with Production Designer Rose Lagace. She is also the creator of the successful Hollywood art department insider website Art Departmental. We spoke in mid august and we both were starting back to work at the time. We talk about her show “The Baroness Von Sketch Show”, which if you haven't checked it out, it's pretty funny and a little dark. We discuss the ebb and flow of the work in Canada in the past decade, some of our tricks we used for getting into the business and her work designing many short films like Patient, Close your Eyes, Suffer, Plus One and so many more. She also describes how she came up with the successful website Art Departmental. Incredible how she is able to juggle working, keeping up with this site, interviewing Designers and Decorators.

Joanne has performed stand-up comedy across the country, she's also done storytelling at the Stratford Festival's “Late Night with Lucy Peacock cabarets,” and improvisation for four seasons of “Sin City,” Toronto's popular live, improvised soap opera. She's been a writer on the hit TV shows "This Hour has Twenty Two Minutes" and the "Baroness Von Sketch Show." Plus she's had a hit Fringe Festival show and is about to debut her new show “She Grew Funny” at the Toronto Fringe. We talk about a course Joanne took to help her write her second Fringe Festival show and the impact of having a daughter on her career.
This firecracker is currently lighting up the world with her new series Baroness Von Sketch Show but her journey to this point has been anything by easy. I got to sit down with her and dive into what it takes to be a such a kick-ass firecracker! Enjoy!

So, here we are, after weeks of faking that we are taping in front of a live audience, we are actual taping in front of live audience. For Real. No kidding. And what better way to inaugurate our ‘no kidding’ live audience experience than to have comedian Dawn Whitwell - you know her from the Baroness Von Sketch Show - as our first guest. Her movie choices are STAND BY ME and THE OUTSIDERS (who knew anyone remembered THE OUTSIDERS other than me, Francis Ford Coppola and Ralph Macchio?). Dawn thunders through the whys and why nots of loving these two films - mostly under the lead of her friend and ex-Franklin the Turtle tour- mate, Louis Marrone -while I have a bit of a problem keeping my focus. It all works out. Thanks Dawn!
