The Bobby Bones Show
Country Music in the 90's: The Year is 1991

The Bobby Bones Show

Bobby continues the ’90s country music countdown with 1991 a year where Brooks & Dunn exploded with Brand New Man, Trisha Yearwood broke through with “She’s in Love with the Boy,” and Garth Brooks started rewriting the record books. But the year also had some heavy chapters, from The Judds’ farewell tour to the tragic loss of Dottie West and the plane crash that changed Reba’s life. Bobby also revisits Vince Gill joining the Opry, Tracy Lawrence surviving a shooting before his debut album, and the first number ones that helped launch several major careers. Plus, he takes a few detours into 1991 outside of country music from Nirvana and Magic Johnson to the World Wide Web, Game Boy, and the pop culture moments that made the year feel unforgettable. Read transcriptEvery kid who ever begged a parent for money to hit GameStop on release day understands the Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship series in their bones: it's the same card game, sold back to you once a year, wearing a slightly fancier hat each time. Konami ran this bit from 2003 to 2006 with the discipline of a Swiss watchmaker and the restraint of absolutely nobody when it came to naming the things. Four games! Four years! Somehow four completely different amounts of the word “World Championship” crammed into each title! And somewhere in that run, things got weird. By the last entry, Konami had apparently decided Yugi, Kaiba, and the rest of the cast had done enough work, and quietly let you duel the actual monster cards instead, like the whole show got replaced by its own trading cards in some kind of legal dispute. There's also a tiny RPG town nobody asked for, a cartridge somehow refereeing six languages at once, and just enough real cardboard cards taped inside the box that there's a real argument the packaging outsold the game. Grabbing a seat at the table to help me sort genuine dueling nostalgia from pure cardboard-fueled compulsion is William Morgan, host of The Geek Gauntlet Podcast, self-billed as the fastest hour in podcasting, a claim that tracks given how fast he and the crew burn through a week's worth of comics, movies, anime, and gaming news. So keep an eye on your Life Points, don't forget your face-downs, and let's find out if the World Championship series was Konami's finest run of Game Boy dueling, or just years of very well-packaged déjà vu. Learn such things as: Why do I think this is so weird but yearly sports games aren't? How far back into a game's ruleset can you go if you weren't there when it was current? Who bought the game for the game, and who bought it just for the included card? And so much more! You can find William on The Geek Gauntlet Podcast. The conversation moves through Fargo Country Club, Moorhead Country Club, Caddyshack-style exclusivity, Mr. Peanut, and the strange household items that feel too fancy to actually use. They also get into childhood safety passwords, stranger danger PSAs, AI-generated YouTube impersonations, Ryan Hall Y'all, family pickup stories, TailSpin, Game Boy kidnapping hypotheticals, and Tucker's very detailed hand-washing routine. Today, the original Nokia cell phone is more of a fable than a product, but back in 2003, the cell phone market wasn't yet dominated by a black rectangle, and ingenuity was everywhere.Which is why the former pulp manufacturer Nokia launched the N-Gage, a cellphone/gaming-device combo, in an effort to take down a little-known company called Nintendo. And since you've probably owned a Game Boy or DS at some point in your life and have never heard of the N-Gage, you probably know who came out on top.BUT! If you were one of the few who got this for Christmas instead of a Game Boy Advance, you probably know that it had impressive graphics and a killer game selection. It's just too bad that pretty much every other aspect of it sucked.Check out more from Justin here: justindodd.rocksCheck out more from Steve here: stevejhward.comdrinkgenies.com

Sometimes the sweetest creations begin with the memories that shaped us as kids.In this episode of As The Pokéball Turns, David Hernandez sits down with Professor Rosemary, a Pokémon-inspired baker and food scientist whose kitchen has become a laboratory for transforming beloved Pokémon into unforgettable desserts. From discovering Pokémon Sapphire on a shared Game Boy with their brother to finally catching the elusive Feebas and realizing a childhood dream of raising a Milotic, Professor Rosemary reflects on how Pokémon has grown alongside him. Professor Rosemary shares why Hoenn still feels like home, his love for Ice-type Pokémon, how studying food science changed the way he sees every ingredient, and why combining baking with Pokémon during the pandemic became the creative spark that launched his content journey. More than cakes and sweets, this conversation explores nostalgia, curiosity, creativity, and the joy of bringing childhood passions to life in unexpected ways.Whether you love Pokémon, baking, or discovering the stories behind passionate creators, this episode is a reminder that the things we loved as children can still inspire who we become.Listen now and follow As The Pokéball Turns for more Pokémon stories celebrating the Trainers, artists, and creators who keep the Pokémon community thriving.SourcesOpening Song: "Forget You" by Alex_MakeMusic from Pixabay Send us Fan MailSupport the showVisit our website: www.asthepokeballturns.comJoin Our Discord Community!https://discord.gg/AqAbD7FbRtMailing AddressP.O Box 117Addison, TX, 75001Your next Pokemon adventure begins here!Disclaimer: This podcast is in no way affiliated with or endorsed by The Pokémon Company International.

Kicking off our I Love the 90s series, we rewind to 1990, when kids played GameBoy while parents watched Twin Peaks. Don and Dude drop the needle on one groundbreaking electronic album and one guitar driven rock release that set the tone for the decade to come, connecting both records to a world of slap bracelets, Pretty Woman at the box office and cassette mixtapes traded on school buses. The AlbumsEnigma – MCMXC a.D. (1990)Romanian German producer Michael Cretu built this project in Ibiza as an anonymous, continuous listening experience, weaving Gregorian chant samples, hip hop drum programming, whispered French vocals and ambient synth textures into one sensual, spiritual song cycle with Sandra Cretu and Frank Peterson. Anchored by the global hit "Sadeness," the album moved from a spoken, meditative opening through guilt, confession and a soulful, Ganges inspired close, proving electronic music could work as a full album statement rather than a string of club singles.Extreme – Extreme II: Pornograffitti (1990)Boston band Extreme, led by guitarist Nuno Bettencourt and singer Gary Cherone, opened their second album with the nearly seven minute funk metal statement "Decadence Dance" before moving through horn driven grooves like "Get the Funk Out" and socially pointed rockers into two stripped down acoustic songs, "More Than Words" and "Hole Hearted," that became the record's biggest hits. Produced by Michael Wagener, Pornograffitti (subtitled A Funked Up Fairy Tale) fused glam era hooks with funk, blues and progressive touches, turning themes of excess, money and empty relationships into a genre jumping 1990 snapshot of rock just before the grunge shift.Diggin AlbumsAnthrax – Cursum Perficio (2026):Thrash pioneers Anthrax return with their first album since 2016's For All Kings, pairing classic crushing riffs and sharp rhythms with career spanning, socially aware songwriting.Alice in Chains – Facelift (1990):Alice in Chains' debut introduced the Seattle band's heavier, more metallic strain of grunge through Jerry Cantrell's crushing riffs and his eerie vocal interplay with Layne Staley.Jacqui Hunt – Desiderium (2026):Single Gun Theory and Delerium veteran Jacqui Hunt blends electronic textures, piano and voice with husband Brian Conolly into a reflective meditation on grief and distance. The New Pornographers – The Former Site Of (2026):The Canadian indie rock collective's tenth album, led by A.C. Newman alongside Neko Case and Kathryn Calder, tells short story style songs about people pushed to emotional and societal extremes.Follow & Support Follow the show on Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and Bluesky @albumnerds, and support the podcast by subscribing, rating, reviewing and sharing it with another music obsessive who still loves hearing whole albums front to back."I'm funny how, I mean funny like I'm a clown, I amuse you?" - Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci), Goodfellas (1990)

Voor een paar tientjes kun je dit spel met cameralens gebruikt bemachtigen, en vanaf een paar tientjes meer heb je een compatibele Game Boy erbij. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa recently talked about how Nintendo views preserving its history and connecting players with classic games through Nintendo Switch Online. With the Nintendo Museum now giving fans a physical way to experience Nintendo's past, and Switch Online continuing to expand with NES, Super NES, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, and now GameCube games on Switch 2, Nintendo seems focused on subscriptions as the main path forward for its classic library. Furukawa also said Nintendo wants to keep exploring a “variety of possibilities” when it comes to giving players access to games from the past. Tonight we're talking about what that actually means, whether Switch Online is enough, why fans still miss Virtual Console, and what Nintendo needs to do next to make its classic game strategy feel complete. Anime did not cross into Western culture in one clean movement. It arrived in fragments, through edited TV dubs, bootleg tapes, playground obsessions, fansubs, late-night downloads, and eventually legal streaming platforms. In this episode of Geekstorians, Dave picks up where Season One's ‘The Anime Underground' left off, following anime's journey from cult import to global mainstream force. We begin at the 2003 Academy Awards, where Spirited Away won Best Animated Feature without sanding itself down for Hollywood. From there, we rewind to the late 90s, when Dragon Ball Z exploded on Toonami and taught a generation of viewers to expect serialised storytelling, consequences, cliffhangers, and men screaming in fields until the landscape reconsidered its options. Then came Pokémon, a franchise that became so massive, so quickly, that many Western children did not even think of it as anime. It was just Saturday morning television, playground trading, Game Boy link cables, and the dangerous social power of a shiny Charizard. The episode also looks at Studio Ghibli's very different crossing: a studio that refused to compromise, resisted Western editing, and eventually saw Spirited Away become the first Japanese film to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Finally, we move into the digital era, where fansubs, piracy, simulcasts, and Crunchyroll transformed anime distribution. What began as a fan-built workaround became part of the legal streaming infrastructure. The underground became the industry.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown. Hosted on Acast. Leaping from game to game, she tells the remarkable story of the people who brought us Super Mario Bros., Zelda, Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Splatoon, and more—not to mention the SNES, N64, Game Boy, Wii, Switch, and a host of other wacky gizmos—and charts the delights they've offered over the decades. MacDonald draws on private interviews with icons like Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario, who continues to leave his stamp on the company, and takes readers on a trip to the secretive Nintendo HQ—making her one of the few Western journalists to have set foot inside the building. Along the way, she provides a close-up look at the company's willingness to take risks and place long-term success over short-term profits.A carousel of wonders, Super Nintendo whisks you back to the couch in the den, a controller in your hands for the very first time, staring up at a screen of infinite possibilities.
