In this episode, Kyle Rose, Managing Director of Medical Technology, and Richard Close, Managing Director of Digital & Tech-Enabled Health Equity Research represent the Canaccord Genuity investment bank and give their perspective on the 2022's MSK investment data pulled from Silicon Valley Bank's annual report for Healthcare Investments and Exits. Richard Close is Cannacord's Managing Director of Digital and Tech-Enabled Health Equity Research and offers his point of view from what he's seen from digital companies. Kyle Rose is the Managing Director of Medical Technologies and focuses more on the medical devices side of the investments shown.Regarding investments, mergers, and acquisitions, digital health companies consolidated deals similar to what they did in 2020. This time, they focused on reducing care costs for employers and payers while striving for better patient outcomes. This cost-avoidance investment strategy is becoming strong, but it doesn't rule out value-based agreements yet. When it comes to devices, however, there was a trend that leaned towards procedural-specific technologies, which help providers excel in their technique and produce better results. It was worth it for Kyle to note that this can be reflected in the data that shows more investment in enabling technologies for procedures, pre-surgical planning, and implants.Richard and Kyle comment on the role AI played in investments in 2022. Based on their experiences, AI-enabled technologies find themselves on the rise when they simplify user experience and satisfaction, key factors around reimbursement. They find value in these propositions when it enhances surgical techniques and procedures, resource allocation and optimization, and workflow dynamics. They don't believe there is yet true regulatory risk when it comes to investing in these technologies, from an orthopedic perspective at least. However, they do believe there are future uses, similar to the diabetes field, where AI could be used to solve orthopedics and staffing issues.Tune in to this episode and listen to Kyle Rose and Richard Close give their investment-bank-permeated take on 2022's MSK investments!
E-S-G Environmental - Social -Governance Dr. Rupini Deepa Rajagopalan is head of the ESG office at Berenberg Bank, the second oldest bank in the world. She built up the ESG office and strategy together with a team, from scratch, after joining in 2018. She actually coined the term "finance with a heart" and feels like incorporating ESG standards in financial analysis is indispensable. Though it may sound a bit technical this episode is for everyone. As ESG is becoming a buzzword and regarded more and more as a widespread solution to "cleaning up" the dirty parts of the investment management and finance industry that is crucial to propping up those industries that are currently wreaking havoc on the world and pushing us closer to climate, societal and ecological breakdown, it is favorable that we try as best we can to develop an understanding of the concept and to question it as well. Should you be an investor or working in the finance industry then you may be interested in what Rupini can share from her experience. It is important to Rupini that investors and asset managers look further than solely at financial information and to consider adopting a more holistic view when deciding where money will flow. Since greenwashing is a problem in every industry and I want us all to stay informed and engaged I asked Rupini to elaborate on a few critical questions: - Is ESG really enough to truly transform the investment industry? - Is it genuine and progressive? - Are there enough genuine change agents in the industry or is it being used as a "sustainable front" to be able to continue business as usual with a "green image"? - How is incorporating ESG compatible with the fiduciary duty of investors to get returns? The investment industry is definitely one that needs a big chunk of transformation and the integration of a moral compass that is not geared towards money over everything. Rupini is a very genuine, kind woman who expressed how fortunate she feels that she is possibly able to play a role in bringing about change and hopefully a bit of heart - to the industry. If you want to make up your own mind about the Berenberg ESG implementation and strategy feel free to visit their website here. Thank you for listening to this Talk☀

Thomas Chittenden, chief data science officer at Genuity Science, says what's keeping the genomics revolution from turning into an equivalent revolution in drug discovery is that most of our domain knowledge about the molecular biology of disease has come from a hunt-and-peck approach, focused on one gene at a time. Find some gene relevant to a disease, knock it out, and you see what happens. Such experiments are always revealing, but the reality is that human biology is the product of the interactions of huge networks of thousands of genes—which means most diseases are the product of dysregulation across these networks. Which means, in turn, that to figure out where to intervene with a drug, you really need to identify the patterns that cascade through the whole network. That’s where AI and machine learning come in, and that’s why Genuity has tasked Chittenden to lead R&D at its Advanced Artificial Intelligence Research Laboratory. Chittenden's team is pioneering new applications of old ideas from the world of probability and statistics, including some that go all the way back to the work of the English statistician Thomas Bayes in the eighteenth century, to look at gene expression data from individual cells and predict which genes are at the beginning of the cascade and are the causal drivers of diseases like atherosclerosis or high blood pressure. The hope is that Genuity can help its clients in the drug discovery business make smarter bets about which drug candidates will be most effective. And that could help shave years of development and billions of dollars in costs off the drug development process.Chittenden is one of those rare professionals who has more degrees than you can shake a stick at—he has a PhD in Molecular Cell Biology and Biotechnology from Virginia Tech and a DPhil in Computational Statistics from the University of Oxford, and completed postdoctoral training at Dartmouth Medical School, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and the Harvard School of Public Health—but can also explain the actual science in a way that makes sense for a non-expert. On top of that he’s been thinking hard about how to rein in some of the hype around the power of AI and machine learning in drug development and how to set expectations about what computing can and can’t do for the industry. Please rate and review MoneyBall Medicine on Apple Podcasts!
