Mickey from and High Society Hemp Co. doesn't have to imagine. Mickey is from Texas where cannabis is still illegal. Her husband was going through chemotherapy, surgeries and even had some ribs removed. He was in pain. The opioid pain killers sedated him too much for him to participate in his life and the lives of their children.Mickey started cooking with hemp derived cannabinoids. Her creations helped her husband's pain. Then she turned her knowledge into a business, High Society Hemp Co. The business helped with the medical bills and other expenses. It seems unthinkable that a simple legal loophole for hemp would lead to the de facto legalization of marijuana edibles in the United States, but here we are. Intoxicating hemp products are everywhere, and everyone seems to be excited about them. But the story of hemp-derived THC's rise and the greatest threat to its future are inexorably linked to its legal status. In this episode, we speak to two legal experts, Marc Hauser and Rebecca Stamey-White, about how the intoxicating hemp business came to life, how long it could last, and how the sector's tenuous legal status is influencing every aspect of the industry, from who invests and founds a hemp business to where it can be sold. This week on the Lancaster Farming Industrial Hemp Podcast we're looking at hemp's environmental promise. We've all heard the claim the hemp can save the planet—but what does the science really say? I talk with environmental scientist Lorelei Alvarez and strategist Joseph Carringer, co-authors of the brand-new Hemp and Sustainability Report, published by HempToday and CannaMarkets Group. Together, we dig into the evidence, the hype, and the responsibility that comes with hemp's potential. The report breaks down hemp's impact on carbon, soil, water, and lifecycle assessments, pulling from peer-reviewed research to separate fact from fantasy. Lorelei and Joseph challenge legacy claims like “one acre of hemp equals four acres of trees,” while also highlighting real opportunities where hemp can reduce emissions, improve soil health, and support sustainable supply chains. The message is clear: hemp won't single-handedly solve our environmental problems, but when grown and processed responsibly, it can be part of the solution. One of the things I like about this report is that it raises the standard for how we talk about hemp. It asks us to back up our stories with evidence, to tell the accurate version of hemp's potential rather than the inflated one. That honesty gives the industry a stronger foundation to grow from, and it gives farmers, processors, and entrepreneurs the tools to make smarter choices. Check out the Hemp and Sustainability Report for yourself, and see what the data has to say. Hemp's future is still being written—and we all have a role to play in shaping it. Hemp harvest has begun. It is the ideal time to harvest hemp for fiber. Grain harvest is in its early stages. Overall, it has been a good growing season as the crop likes warm conditions with adequate moisture. Late season precipitation and higher humidity creates ideal conditions for insects. Producers will watch these pressures into the fall. Phillip Alberti is a Research Program Manager in the hemp program at UW-Madison.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Wisconsin has a history in hemp production that dates back to 1908 when farmers started growing the crop. The state played a key role during World War II when hemp was being used for rope. Today, hemp is used in a variety of products but the key is growing a crop that meets market quality requirements. Kiley Allan visits with UW-Madison Hemp Research Program Manager, Phillip Alberti. Alberti says harvest is underway. August is the peak time for fiber hemp and early stage of grain hemp. Weather hasn't been a problem for the crop this year according to Alberti, but the humidity creates some lucrative challenges with insects. A few showers this morning, otherwise a pretty pleasant Wednesday on the way. Stu Muck says it's a dry week after that with moderate temps. Ashley Huhn from the Steffes Group joins Pam Jahnke to discuss a manure handling equipment auction that's coming up. This is generally very unique and expensive equipment that buyers would have to locate in multiple locations. Ashley Huhn says this auction brings it all to one spot. Paid for by Steffes Group. Lactococcus Lactis - it's not a dirty word! It could, however, become the state microbe for Wisconsin if one state representative gets her way. Ben Jarboe finds out why this microbe fits "America's Dairyland" from Senator Rachel Cabral-Guevara from the 19th district. She says this microbe is used in nearly every dairy product made in the state, which makes it the perfect state microbe representative. This is the second straight session she has introduced the bill in. Today’s farms run on advanced technology, face high financial risk, and operate under ever-changing policy landscapes. Yet even with all that, farmers still find time to serve their communities—whether it’s mentoring youth or volunteering at the county fair. That’s exactly the kind of well-rounded excellence the Wisconsin Outstanding Young Farmer Program seeks to recognize. Cindy Matton leads the program. She tells Stephanie Hoff about the program and why it was started. She also explains the fairly simple application process for young farmers that want to apply. Hemp-derived THC products, including beverages, have exploded on the market in recent years as producers take advantage of a federal legal loophole that leaves the products legal—or at least not-illegal—in many states. Much of this nascent beverage market is focused on seltzer-style minimalism or sweet, fruit-forward drinks, but Connecticut's Float House (https://floathouse.co) is making the case for beer aroma and flavor as the category develops. In this episode, cofounders Gordon Whelpley and Jared Emerling—alumni of Connecticut and New York breweries that include Two Roads, Sixpoint, Twelve Percent Beer Project, and Stony Creek—discuss their approach to making hop-driven THC beverages that drink like nonalcoholic beers. Along the way, they touch on: launching a THC beverage brand in an uncertain environment the current regulatory framework for producing and selling hemp-derived beverages creatively designing beer-focused beverages in a space with infinite possibility building balanced flavor and mouthfeel in hopp-forward NA brews creating body using novel hop products the difference between nonconverted and converted hemp-derived THC how CBD modulates the body's uptake of THC the benefits of beverage-sipping as a slow ingestion mode for THC And more. It's wild to think how many everyday products are made from stuff that takes forever to break down—or worse, never does. Meanwhile, natural options like hemp have been pushed aside, not because they don't work, but because they threatened the wrong profits. There's this whole other version of progress that's cleaner, smarter, and already possible—we just haven't prioritized it. It makes you wonder how different things could look if we stopped betting on convenience and started backing what actually helps. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ws2KK6p56eA Pankaj Srivastava, CEO of Renaissance Park Corp, has built and scaled multiple companies, including a $1B cybersecurity firm. He's now focused on replacing toxic materials with natural alternatives like hemp. His work spans sectors from skincare to batteries, all with a focus on performance and environmental impact. Stay tuned! Quotes: “Time is your worst enemy, and time is also the best test. In this installment of Texas Talks Presents: Hemp in Texas, host Brad Swail speaks with Scott Gates—Law enforcement veteran, farmer, hemp industry advocate, and co-founder of Texas Hemp Growers—about the business, science, and politics shaping hemp's future in the Lone Star State. From soil health to small-town economies, Gates lays out how hemp isn't just an agricultural product—it's a path toward sustainable farming, rural revitalization, and consumer choice. He warns that the proposed SB5 hemp ban threatens not only businesses and jobs, but also the rights of Texans to choose safer alternatives to alcohol and pharmaceuticals. Gates brings a unique blend of farmer's pragmatism and legislative savvy, explaining what's at stake for growers, manufacturers, and everyday Texans if the state outlaws hemp-derived cannabinoids. In next installment of Texas Talks Presents: Hemp in Texas, host Brad Swail sits down with Sarah Stogner, the elected District Attorney for Texas' 143rd Judicial District. Known for her unfiltered honesty and fierce independence, Stogner makes the legal case against SB5—the controversial bill to ban hemp-derived THC. She argues that the real threat to Texans isn't hemp, but selective prosecution, government overreach, and bad lawmaking driven by special interests. From generational alcohol abuse to the collapse of prosecutorial credibility in THC cases, this episode is a wake-up call from inside the justice system. Stogner says what others won't: banning hemp won't protect children—it'll destroy businesses, waste resources, and push more Texans into the black market.

Dear listeners, This week on the Hemp Show, we're dropping the needle on a very special commemorative box set from the 2025 Global Industrial Hemp Fiber Summit in Raleigh, North Carolina. In this first installment — Sides 1 and 2 — of a three-episode miniseries, we hear from a wide range of voices building the fiber side of the hemp industry from the ground up: farmers, machine makers, wet processors, entrepreneurs and professors. They're working in the field and in the lab, bridging research and manufacturing, and helping steer the industrial hemp conversation back to its core: fiber, hurd and regenerative purpose. NIHC's Global Fiber Hemp Summit in Raleigh was special. No question about that. And I thought it deserved special treatment here on the podcast. I am hopeful that I was able to capture the energy in the room. I interviewed nearly 40 people during the summit, and they each have a story to tell about their part of the supply chain. Forty interviews is too long for one show. It's too long for two shows. but it's perfect for this three-disc set. I'm calling it a “box set” because that's how it feels — like a classic record album like "All Things Must Pass," "Joe's Garage," "Europe '72," or "The Last Waltz." Thank you for indulging me. — eric Side One — Voices Featured: • Guy Carpenter – President, Bear Fiber [00:02:25] • Maciej Kowalski – Founder, Kombinat Konopny, Poland [00:05:06] • Hardy Sullivan – Managing Director, THIES US [00:12:24] • Bryan Wilson – Project ELI, Environmental Living Industries, Texas [00:15:56] • Dan Matthews – Project Manager, Tatham Ltd., U.K. [00:17:52] • Shira Adler – Founder, EcoSynergy LLC [00:20:18] • Anjli Kumar – Founder, Inner Bark Heritage [00:23:07] • Alejandro Diaz – Hemp Fortex [00:25:45] • Rick Brown – Brown Family Farms & Produce N.C. Joshua Bauchner, chair of the Cannabis, Hemp and Psychedelics Practice Group of Mandelbaum Barrett, P.C., discusses the intricacies of medical cannabis use and its legal implications. While some states provide protections for medical cannabis users, federal law does not, limiting the scope of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The inconsistency between state and federal laws creates additional challenges for both employers and employees. The discussion further explored the potential impacts of DEA rescheduling or descheduling cannabis, including possible changes to ADA protections and tax implications for cannabis businesses. Ultimately, prioritizing the passage of the Safe Banking Act and amending Section 280E of the IRS code were identified as more effective solutions for addressing industry challenges.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Craig Katz joins the show to break down the policy tensions between Illinois' regulated marijuana market and its largely unregulated hemp industry. As a board member for multiple trade associations and the compliance manager at CBDratom, Katz gives listeners an insider view into the push for House Bill 1—a legislative effort that would add labeling, age-gating, and testing requirements for intoxicating hemp products, without placing them under the expensive and restrictive CRTA framework. We talk about why hemp has become a preferred path for small businesses and social equity entrepreneurs, how major cannabis companies are now entering the hemp space, and what reasonable regulation could look like. Plus, a frank discussion on taxation, the future of HB1, and the controversial compound known as “7OH.” Watch video version and read full show notes here: https://thecolememo.com/2025/07/28/e221/
