HER Style Podcast | Buy Less, Shop Smarter, Build a Wardrobe You Love
Today's Q&A Thursday question is the most honest, vulnerable, and maybe relatable question I've received yet. Our friend Lyndsay opened up to me recently about her struggle to build a closet when her weight is in a constant flux. She wants to feel stylish but confessed that she nearly always feels unattractive. And it really affected me to hear that. I want you to feel beautiful no matter your current size, your body shape, your features, your flaws, your budget, your life. It is 100% possible to build a wardrobe you love and to feel your best every single day. I'm on a mission to EMPOWER you to look past your obstacles and discover the simple art and science of getting dressed. It's so much easier than you think! I know Lyndsay is not alone in this at all. So many women are struggling to feel comfortable in their own skin and to dress their bodies in a way that makes them see just how beautiful they truly are. If you're feeling this way, I wish I could give you the biggest hug. But since I can't do that, I've rounded up 10 practical tips to help you build a wardrobe through weight fluctuations. Even if you feel like it's a waste of money to buy clothes that might not fit you in another week or month or year. Even if you don't want to buy clothes at your current size. Even if you don't know how to dress to flatter your figure. This IS applicable to you. Please don't dismiss the content in this podcast as only relatable to women who are a specific size or style type or demographic. This information is for YOU. Yes, you, listening right now on the other side of the speaker. I'm talking to you, I'm here to support you, and together, we're going to make sure you stop feeling stuck and insecure and start getting dressed and showing up every day with confidence! In my past 16 years as an image consultant and personal stylist, I've heard all the reasons women feel like it's not possible for them to have an enviable style. To be completely transparent, I've had some of these limiting thoughts myself. Today, I'm revealing the top 3 things you DON'T need – that you probably think you do! – to look stylish. And I'll even confess the one I struggle with the most. If you've ever thought about giving up and surrendering to a life of sweatpants (or if you already have), then turn up your earbuds! Because I'm here to bust some serious myths about what it takes to look good and step into your best style. No more excuses, my friend! Let's do this. Something I haven't talked about much on the podcast yet are the numerous non life-threatening, yet frustrating health problems I've faced over the course of my life. In fact, I actually dove deep into this area about 10 years ago and got a nutrition coaching certification! And after working with private styling clients over the years, I witnessed firsthand that so many women are facing debilitating health battles, struggling to lose weight, and generally feeling unwell. So while my passion is personal style and helping you build a wardrobe you love, I also know what it means to feel good on the inside and see that confidence and vibrancy radiate on the outside. While this isn't my typical episode, I think it's important to share about my most recent health struggle, how I overcame it, and what I did to lose “the last 10 pounds” without even trying! My weight was NOT my primary concern, but losing the few excess pounds I was holding onto over the last few years has been icing on the cake (no pun intended). My clothes fit more comfortably and, more importantly, my physical symptoms are gone I did this without dieting, tracking my meals, and working out far less than I normally do. I invite you to listen to today's episode as I open up and share this very personal journey with you! Tierney Tough is a ubiquitous presence in her native scene of Orlando, FL. At any given time, you can find her fronting beloved indie rock outfit The Pauses, organizing shows and festivals, or out on the road as a musician in the indie and punk tour circuit. Today, Tierney shares her first solo contribution to the music world, A Farce To Reckon With. The three-song EP was written completely by (and for) herself, influenced by artists like Fiona Apple, Built To Spill, Cat Power, and Blonde Redhead. Fittingly, her first solo effort elbowed its way into existence during a pandemic that forced us all into isolation and serves as a space for her signature voice and songwriting style to fully manifest and conjure its own spell. The three diverse tracks that comprise A Farce To Reckon With are drenched in an array of pianos, synths, and organic tones that all provide a perfect framework for Tierney's powerful voice. Single “Apartment 54” is a piano-driven earworm that taps into Tierney's imagination of turning her living room into a homemade discotheque during quarantine, while “Tired Swing” reels you in with its alluring melodies and unique percussion. A vibrant reimagining of “Friends of Mine” by the Zombies, featuring Patrick Newbery (Cursive) and Shawn Alpay (Laura Stevenson, How To Dress Well), wraps up the EP on a high note. Tierney collaborated with the inimitable Jim Dreffen to co-produce and J. Robbins (Jawbox) to mix the release. Thank you for listening! It's 6 in the morning as I finalize this episode. Been pulling regular all nighters multiple times a week since I launched the podcast. Podcasting is no joke! But I do it, simply because I can, and because I love sharing my finds with you. You all seem to be enjoying the soundscapes, so it makes all the sleepless nights and countless hours of rummaging through shitty music worth it. Thank you. I hope my selections crack you open, trigger you, move you, and inspire you. There's so much rich life and story behind each song, and I hope you are able to see it and feel it as I do and carry those impressions with you throughout your everyday experiences. Welcome to the final Mixtape Sessions of 2014 and what a treat this set is! We got a lot to cover here so let's get right to it. Kicking things off is “Give Me Sunshine” by Santa Maradona F.C. featuring Lucy Spraggan. Think of the first-time you heard that “feel-good” song on the radio and your body's endorphins just suddenly flooded your brain with all sorts of good-will and happy feelings. Maybe you recently got that feeling when you heard Pharell's “Happy” or perhaps back in the day with Sheryl Crow's “All I Wanna Do.” “Give Me Sunshine” is simply one of those songs. A simple narrative that tells a story set to a bouncy beat goes a long way in my book. “Sunshine” bleeds into EelkeKleijn's “Mistakes I've Made,” which is set to a backdrop of an old western theme with a deep house beat. The song recounts all the past mistakes made in his life but does reconcile that he “gets stronger” and leaves the question if there is a future. Keeping up with the indie-house inspiration, I paired this song with “Netzwerk (Falls Like Rain)” by Klangkarussell (another soothing deep house tune with a surprising Afro-choir dropped in during the chorus). From here, we begin a transition from indie-deep-house (Soul For You) to more soulful deep house “Mood For You” by Knox and Moss. The big surprise here is the Justin Faust rework of Janet Jackson's early millennial hit “Someone To Call My Lover.” While I've been a bit skeptical of the gender-bending vocal remixes that are currently the trend, it works surprisingly well here. Sam Smith doesn't need any more praise, so I'll move on to Zhu who's anonymity and solid productions have quickly raised his or her's recognition since being introduced earlier this year. “Faded” is deep and moody deep house that is intriguing while at the same time comes across a bit disturbing. I love this song but can't help but can't help be picturing it in some dark seedy movie about a serial killer LOL. It gives me chills. BIG HEADS UP to How To Dress Well and the Cyril Hahn remix of his “Precious Love.” This is a sweet slice of R&B electronica-pop and shows a budding untapped talent that deserves to be plucked for greater things. At the very least we need to get him some Pro Tools to master his music, but don't let that distract from the true talent invoked in his music. Perhaps the one song that not only struck a chord with me but I've had on repeat for over a month is Birdy's “Skinny Love.” Sebastian Carter does the remix honor here by turning in an addictive and hypnotic beat that sucks you in with Birdy's alluring vocals. He also buries the lyrics in the beats with the exception of "And I told you to be patient And I told you to be fine And I told you to be balanced And I told you to be kind" allowing listeners not familiar with the original to turn the song into whatever they want it to mean to them. Crying and driving around the ATL late at night listening to this song has done just that, so let's move on shall we. I change course with the excellent Diplo remix of Zola Jesus' “Go Blank Sea.” When you get to the break with this kind of gangsta-electronic swag, you'll have your hands swaying in the air. This all leads to another go-to song of the moment, “Beggin for Thread” by BANKS. If you bank this against (no pun intended) Keiza's latest “Giant in My Heart” also included in this set, you'll get the sense I'm a sucker love-lost songs. Okay, I am but these songs are so cleverly written and crafted it's hard not to be sucked in. If anyone that Chainsmokers are just one-offs with hits like “Selfie” and “Kanye” better think again. These guys are proving their in tune pop sensibilities and are quickly rising to the level of Calvin Harris with Anna of the North's “Sway.” I fully expect to be hearing a lot more from these guys in 2015. Additional indie (Crystaleyes) and deep house tunes (Slip Away, Falling in Love,

This latest Ru-Mix, Benediction, is a celebration of all things summer. Whether you're a Brazilian friend winding down the warmer months down south, or a New Yorker wondering when the heat will finally arrive, this mixtape is sure to have you yearning for some fun in the sun. The mix is very heavy on vocals and house music, and there's a just a little bit of disco in there to make you smile on the dancefloor. Tracklist: 1. Chromatics – The Telephone Call Some late night atmospherics to start us off from ‘Night Drive/Original Motion Picture Soundtrack IV' accompanied by some London rain I recorded. 2. How To Dress Well – When I Was In Trouble HTDW bring melancholy & starkness to the genre. Sounds more like the soundtrack to the walk home after breaking up with your girlfriend (suitable to this podcast) than champagne & gold chains. 3. Inc. – Swear Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis on Ketamine. 4. fLako – Mating Dance For me music is at it's best when it sounds unconventional, surprises you & demands your attention. fLako's afro-electronics ticks all the boxes. 5. Chosen Gospel Singers – Prayer For The Doomed This track was recorded at some time in the late 1950s & though a million miles away in process, to me has a lot in common with the previous tracks by How To Dress Well & Inc. 6. Daniel Bernard Roumain & Ryuichi Sakamoto – The Need To Be ‘The Need To Be' is taken from a compilation with the lengthy title of ‘DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid* – Sound Unbound Audio Companion: Excerpts & Allegories From The Sub Rosa Archives', which is to accompany his book of the same name. 7. Edgar Froese – Icarus Edgar Froese was a founding member of seminal German act Tangerine Dream. in 1978 Froese released his solo album ‘Ages' after major differences with his bandmates. According to Froese, it was recorded at a very emotional time in his career. 8. Dom Thomas – Gin & Tonic From the Finders Keepers & B-Music Crew; Dom Thomas blurs the lines between mixtape & original composition 9. Robert Ashley – Bruno Part 1 Robert Ashley is a contemporary American composer whose work traverses opera, experimental electronic music & theatrical works. ‘Bruno Part 1' is a hypnotic spoken word piece that is similar in tone to Laurie Anderson's ‘O Superman'. 10. Lee Hazlewood – Hands Ah, our old pal Lee Hazlewood is back – possibly the most featured artist ever on the World Service. Wouldn't you know it, poor old Lee is down on his luck & of course it's a woman that's the source of his troubles. Chin up son. 11. Hackman – Forgotten Notes This track is released on Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Records, named after North London's Brownswood Road, which my old house backs on to. A fact interesting only to me. 12. Vangelis – Multi Track Suggestion Van the man in rare disco mode, disco with his unique take on it as you would expect. This is from the 1980 album ‘See You Later' which sees him experimenting with electronic sounds for the first time. 2 years later he would take his electronic sounds to new heights & greater acclaim with the Blade Runner soundtrack. 13. Oneohtrix Point Never – Betrayed In The Octagon The Brooklyn-based musician Daniel Lopatin describes the track as "a stoned space epic about one really bad day in the life of an astronaut.", & that is good enough for me. 14. Robert Frost – Reluctance Another piece of spoken wordery by American poet Robert Frost 15. Julia Holter – Goddess Eyes (Echo Manor Version) Holter's music builds up from layers of patient, breathy voices & strings that seem to slowly sneak up on, rather than impose themselves on you. 16. Bill Fay – The Never Ending Happening Revealing itself behind some Arsenal fans (thanks lads) is ‘The Never Ending Happening', simply one of the most heartfelt & beautiful pieces of music i've heard in a long time. 17. Seti The First – Sugar To Sea Lion I've been a big fan of Seti The First for a while, only very recently discovering they were two Irish musicians; Kevin Murphy & Thomas Haugh. 18. F.J. McMahon – Sister Brother Released in 1969, following a stint serving in the U.S. Air Force. The album's outsider, lo-fi folk vibe pulls from his experiences in Vietnam & has become a top item among collectors & folk/psych lovers alike.

This week the NPP team tackles the new trend of popular R&B taking root in indie music. With new artists like The Weeknd, Frank Ocean, and How To Dress Well, it's clear that 90's R&B is making a comeback. This episode explores how it got to this point. The first clue started a few years ago when contemporary bands began covering R&B hits from the 90's - in 2009 The xx covered Aaliyah's “Hot Like Fire.” Shortly after, the influence of this sound grew apparent in new indie bands like Gayngs and James Blake. Dirty Projector's smash “Stillness in the Move” was a watershed moment, in which a pure R&B vocal was paired with the bands traditionally challenging sound. Now the stage is set for not just artists dabbling in an R&B sound but actual pure R&B artist to be embraced by the independent community, a fascinating and rewarding new trend in music. The group also announce the winning name of their recommendation segment, “Ear About Town.” This episode's segment Jesse, Jaime and Dawson stay with the theme and share their respective favorite R&B song from the 1990's. 1. “House of Balloons/Glass Table Girls” – The Weeknd, House of Balloons 2. “Transparency” – d'Eon, Darkbloom 3. “Are You That Somebody?” (clip) – Aaliyah, Dr. Doolittle Soundtrack 4. “Hot Like Fire” Aaliyah Cover (clip) - The xx, B-Side to Crystalized Single 5. “Don't Take it Personal” Monica Cover - White Hinterland, single 6. “Gaudy Side of Town” – Gayngs, Relayted 7. “Stillness is the Move” (clip) – Dirty Projectors, Bitte Orca 8. “Stillness is the Move” (clip) – Solange, single 9. “Songs for Women” - Frank Ocean, Nostalgia/Ultra 10. “Wicked Games” - The Weeknd, House of Balloons 11. “Ready for the World” - How to Dress Well, Love Remains Ear About Town Jesse: “Cupid” (clip) – 112, 112 Jaime: “All My Life” (clip) – K-Ci and JoJo, Love Always Dawson – “Pony” (clip) – Ginuwine, Ginuwine the Bachelor
